No fewer than 11 policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Cross River State have been dismissed from service after an orderly room trial found them guilty of extra-judicial killing. The 11 dismissed policemen and three other senior officers were indicted for the extra-judicial killing of a 300-level student of the Department of Accounting, University of Calabar, Derek Maurice-Enang, and five others. It was learnt that the three senior officers would wait for their own disciplinary actions from the Police Headquarters in Abuja. Derek and the five others were killed on April 17, 2014 in an alleged gun duel with the police in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state. Their bodies were sold to the Anatomy Department of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for N11, 000 each. But a senior police source at the Zone Six Police Command, who broke the news of their dismissal, said there was no evidence linking those killed to allegations of robbery during the trial. He said, “The judgement has been handed down on them. Throughout the trial, there was no evidence linking the slain people to robbery. It was clear that the policemen are not innocent of the accusations. They are all still in detention awaiting their arraignment in court.” A committee set up by the immediate past Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone Six, Calabar, Mr. Musa Daura, indicted the policemen over their involvement in the death of Derek and others. It was gathered that Daura signed their dismissal from the Force before leaving the command for his new posting. When contacted, the Zone Six Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Tasiu, said he had yet to get the details of the dismissal because he had not been in the office in the last two weeks due to ill health. The Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State Command, Mr. Hogan Bassey, declined comment on the matter, saying the issue had gone beyond the command. www.punchng.com/news/police-dismiss-11-over-slain-unical-student/ |
on september 04, 2014 at 8:15 pm in news By Johnbosco Agbakwuru & Joseph Erunke ABUJA - AS the Boko Haram insurgents continue to have upper hand in the North East, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh has revealed that for the country to win the war against terrorism, there was the need for diplomatic lobbying for foreign assistance in areas of equipment. But the Senator representing Kaduna Central, Senator Mohammed Saleh said it was impossible for the military to win the terrorism war with the present obsolete equipment and the alleged fraud in Ministry of Defence and the Military Service. Meanwhile, Senator Saleh has said that after the Gideon Okar coup of 1990 during the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, the military was systematically and comprehensively disarmed which now makes it impossible for the army to effectively confront any external aggression. Speaking at the National Assembly Joint Committee on Defence Thursday, the Chief of Defence Staff said that since the declaration of state of emergency in the three North East states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, the Armed Forces had been engaged in a sustained operations against the terrorists. According to Air Marshal Badeh, “In the last one month, troops have sustained on-going offensive operations both in and outside seven division areas of operation to shape the theatre, establish fighting positions and limiting Boko Haram freedom of movement within the area of operation. “Significantly, troupes are currently carrying out unlimited offensive operations aimed at denying Boko haram freedom of action and from achieving its aim to isolate and control areas around Maiduguri. “Additionally, the involvement of the international community which led to the establishment of the joint planning committee on the 12 of May, 2014, the initial mandate of the joint coordination and planning committee which is championed by America and Britain was the fusion of intelligence for the rescue of abducted Chibok girls. “But this gradually is being extended to other aspects of the operations. I want to state here that the military is highly engaged in operations in view of achieving favourable outcomes. “Moreover, the continued attacks by the terrorists justify the imposition and extension of state of emergency because there is no alternative. Let me just say that Nigerians need not lose hope in the military but continue to support her in a bid to defeat the terrorists. “Secondly, all other elements of national power should contribute more in support of military operations. Right now, the element of national power we are using is the military. Other elements of national power are not being engaged sufficiently. “There is also the need for diplomatic lobbying for our foreign partners to provide more assistance in areas of equipment and whatever they can give us.” Security situation is deteriorating—Sen. Saleh But a member of the Senate Joint National Assembly Committee on Defence and an All Progressives Congress Senator from Kaduna Central, Senator Ahmed Saleh appeared to have dashed the hope of the military winning the war against terrorism even as he said that the situation was getting worse on daily basis. Senators Saleh, a retired army general said, “What I am going to say is based on my experience as an insider. Our duty here as senators of the federal republic transcends the extension of state of emergency. Our duty of oversight should ensure that high standards must be maintained in addition to acquiring all necessary equipment required to maintain a strong force. “When the Chief of Defense Staff was appointed in January this year, the service chiefs made a categorical statement that within three months they will crush Boko haram. But unfortunately, what we are seeing is a complete deterioration of the situation, so it is incumbent on us to find out why that deterioration. We have heard about our soldiers’ mutiny, it is also our responsibility to find out why that is happening. “For us to understand why that is happening, we need to go back to the Babangida (Gen. Ibrahim Babangida) era. After the 1990 Okar coup, the Federal Government of Nigeria systematically and comprehensively disarmed the military. “All the tanks, all the artillery guns were disarmed and locked up. All the aircraft were parked in Ilorin and other places, flying stopped, training stopped to ensure regime security not national security. “All the good officers of the Nigerian army were hounded out of the military. And there was over concentration of power at the centre which was the army headquarters. Prior to that, General Officers Commanding used to have training and maneuver grants. “They had the power and responsibility to train their troops and battalions and to ensure an efficient logistics and service support system. All that stopped. Everything was from Army headquarters, everything was from Air Force headquarters, everything was from Naval headquarters. “The attendant result was decay. Training was no longer going on at the battalion level, soldiers lost their skills and since then, no additional military equipment was purchased for the Nigerian Army. Even things as little as machine guns were in short supply, ammunition was in short supply. “An individual soldier’s professional skill was to be a matchman, to shoot and hit his target but can he do that if he has no ammunition? We have a duty to rebuild this army, to rebuild this armed forces, and unless we understand these basic facts, we are not going anywhere. “Also, after some time the fighting doctrine of the Nigerian Army was changed. We were essentially British brought up. That means we knew how much materials we had, the tasks before us and so on. But along the line during the Obasanjo (Chief Olusegun Obasanjo) regime, General Obasanjo brought Americans here and our doctrine approach was change to warfare. “I make bold to tell you that up till today nobody understands that. I know it is a strategic concept of warfare but in Nigeria we are applying it to the operational and tactical level. It has created a lot of confusion within our army. “Apart from that, our involvement in foreign operations and the kind of training we give to our soldiers for operations was a kind of defensive posture. You don’t kill until you are killed, you don’t attack until you are attacked. “That also helped to change the orientation of some of our soldiers. Then again, I must mention here fraud within the ministry of defense, fraud within the military service systems themselves has contributed a lot to diminishing our fighting capability. “Further to that again, we have the issue of our combat service support. Because of fraudulent activities, we monetized everything. Out supply services, our medical services are completely inefficient and are unable to support the fighting in the North East now. Right now I stand to question how our soldiers are being fed.” Speaking earlier, Chairman Senate Committee on Defence, Senator George Thompson Sekibo said that the essence of the meeting was to know why the issue of insurgence persists in the country and the conflicting reports on the fight against Boko Haram in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. Senator Sekibo said, “Nigerians are worried over the security station. Rather than abate its worsening. The spokesperson of the military and the press are contradicting each other. We want to find out the true situation of the attacks. “You will observe that the joint committee of the National Assembly on Defence met here with the Chief of Defence staff and other security chiefs from 10am to 3pm to get situation reports on insurgency problem in the three affected north eastern states as part of follow up to the approval of state of emergency in the affected state in May this year. “We have heard several stories from the media on alleged upper hand of the insurgents against the military and the military telling us here that such stories were speculative, making it difficult for us to know which of the stories to believe. “The military In fact debunked stories of major cities being taken over by the insurgents in the three states , though admitted that the insurgents had one of the towns as stronghold which according to them would be taken over from them in a matter of time from now. “We have also been informed by them that presidency is doing more for them in terms of procurement of new war ammunition and improve in welfare packages and other things being done to boost the morale of those at the war front. “But the committee has resolved to reach out to Mr President for direct interaction on the national problem with a view to knowing what and what are being done to fight the war to its logical conclusion which will definitely afford us the opportunity to put in our own pieces of advice. “We also resolved to submit all our findings at this meeting today to the respective chambers on resumption about 12 days to come”. Senator Sekibo said the Joint Committee wanted to know, “Who has captured where. We are worried about the contradictions. We want to know, is the military still equipped or not, what is the state of our equipment, are you having difficulties accessing funds, if there are funds to buy the equipment the moral of the soldiers will raise. “State of emergency is in the third stage and things are worse. Do we evacuate people there and go for full scale war, were the funds released to you? We should know the problem. We at National Assembly will not rest on our oars. Some of our people at the National Assembly can’t go back to our states,” he stated. |
streetzdreamz: Why wud i go tru d trouble of getting a wife material dat still wouldnt promise a safe haven after marriage, wife material or no wife material, dis are just precautionary measures t still wudnt promise a lasting, smooth sailing relationship,i see d institution more like a gambling table, where u stack up d odds than two individuals living togeda for d rest of dia lives,i find nfn more repulsive than dat in marriages...d institution is simply overhyped hence most pple rush into making vows dey neva intended to make nor keep, just cause d society wants em to get married. No deep thoughts about dia personal wants and needs, cuz if dia is, they'd always get hooked with someone they'd see his or her imperfection as nfn but perfections....You man be surprise some pple are still of the opinion that they will go back to village to marry a lady. Lmao |
aisha2: Thank you for your complement however as a wife and mother I don't appreciate being referred to as " baby" thank youHmm, she's married oooooo? |
Floodgater: Every girl is groomed to be a wife material and expected to be one by society. Thats why she's taught to cook, clean, give care etc from home. So the type of material she turns out depend majorly on her groomer and what she is groomed with. Only few boys are groomed to be husband material like provide, love and honour his wife, protect, be there always for family etc but all boys are 'groomed' to be head(that is he can get away with anything, seriously how many boys start their first duty of providing, etc from home). Thus all boys will either end up as the head or headache of the family but few, husband materials. You r on point but I don't agree totally. |
litetias: Na wetin save you be dat. I for correct your english tire todayDon't mind me! Thanks |
Suarezilla: Absolutely none of my bizness...why shud I care when I didn't benefit from such money? MmmtTeeewwwYou should be concerned because money will be tapped from you indirectly to service the loan. |
olushowunm: Most people here are getting the news wrong. First, for Lagos, its an healthy loan, because Lagos currently have over N450billion ($2.8125billion) which is healthy. Do most people compare Lagos to Plateau, they are not the same pedestal as Lagos is thirsty for growth and also with huge revenue potential. Do you expect a place like plateau waiting for federal allocation and some meagre IGR from Nabisco and Grand Cereals to take $1b debt? Who will give them? Not in this world!Oh! See Economist, you call this healthy loan when the cost of servicing the loan is almost as much as the loan itself when it's cumulative. Abeg Park well! |
pelvicky: Wats wrong with this APC STATES, same here in osun state under rauf aregbesola administration....Borrowing money and money as if their is no tomorrow....debtors party.I need to make it clear I'm a no-party man but we have to face the fact because it's obvious; debts is peculair to all APC states as u rightly said but the most upsetting things is that they castigate PDP govt especially on debt before they assume office, @least I know of that of Ogun state. |
Haywhymido: pls where do u spring out 4rmWho tells you she isn't married yet? |

by Jamaal al-Din Zarabozo, Mission Islam "O believers, when the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, come to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business, that is better for you if you but did know." [Al-Jumuah, 62:9] Purifying and cleaning oneself The person intending to perform Salat al-Jumuah is highly encouraged to have ghusl (full bath or shower). The majority of the scholars are of the opinion that the ghusl for Salat a- Jumuah is recommended (sunnah) but not obligatory. The ghusl is performed starting from the time of Fajr Prayer. Also, if a person performs ghusl and then later invalidates his ablution, he need not repeat the ghusl. Making ablution (wudhu) suffices. Furthermore, one ghusl may be used for removing sexual defilement (janabah) and for Salat al-Jumuah. Going early to the masjid There is a great reward in going early to Salat al-Jumuah, beginning after sunrise. By leaving for Salat al-Jumuah, one gets the reward of waiting for the Prayer, making dhikr (remembering Allah) and voluntary prayers during that time. Abu Umamah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam) said, "The angels sit at the doors to the Masjids and with them are scrolls in which they record the people [who come]. When the Imam appears, the scrolls are rolled up." Abu Umamah was asked, "Does the one who comes after the Imam still have a Friday Prayer?" he said, "Certainly, but he is not one of those who is recorded [as coming early]." [Ahmad and al- Tabarani] Dressing well for Salat al-Jumuah This is a special time that requires Muslims to appear in the best manner possible. One should therefore put on his best attire for Salat al-Jumuah. The Prophet (sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam) said, "If one has the means, he should buy two pieces of clothing, other than his work clothes or [everyday clothing], to wear on Friday." [Abu Dawud] Performing tahiyyat al-Masjid If a person comes late to the Friday Prayer while the Imam is delivering the khutbah, should he pray the two rak`ahs of tahiyyat al-Masjid (prayer of greeting the mosque) and the sit or should he simply skip them? The strongest opinion is to perform the tahiyyat al-Masjid based on the Hadith of the Prophet (sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam): "If one of you comes to the Masjid, he should pray two rak`ahs before he sits" [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. However, tahiyyat al-Masjid is not required of the person giving the khutbah. Also, this requirement is limited only to prayers offered in a Masjid. Other Etiquette of Salat al-Jumuah: 2. Walking to the Masjid whenever feasible as there is a reward for every step taken to the Masjid. 3. Avoiding stepping over people to get to a particular spot in the Masjid. 4. Avoiding dividing two people who are sitting together. 5. Not making someone stand and taking his place. 6. Not clasping one’s hands and intertwining one’s fingers while waiting for the prayer. 7. Sitting in the front rows and close to the Imam whenever possible. 8. Remaining quiet while the Imam is delivering the khutbah. This actually includes listening to the Imam and not playing with anything while the Imam is speaking. 9. Going to the Masjid in a state of calmness and not being hurried. 10. Reciting surah al-Kahf (surah 18) as an authentic Hadith states: "For whoever recites surah al-Kahf on Friday, it will be a light for him from that Friday to the next." [Al-Bayahaqi and Al-Hakim] The surah could be read any time of the day. Indeed, Salat al-Jumuah is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam. The Prophet (sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam) has described the wonderful blessings and benefits that Allah has vouchsafed upon Muslims through this magnificent act. Knowing how important this prayer is in Allah’s sight, Muslims must do their best to perform it in the best way possible. They should strive and sacrifice for the sake of this Prayer. 1. Jan van Riebeeck (1619-1667) - OK, So this guy is Dutch, not South African, but he makes the list as he was the founder of Cape Town, which makes him pretty famous. Van Riebeeck was an explorer and originally 'discovered' South Africa in 1652. It was the foundation of Cape Town that started an influx of Dutch settlers to South Africa. I guess you could say he founded the Dutch South Africa. 2. Sid James (1913-1976) - Sid James was one of those old school comedians/ actors/jack of all trades. He made his name as Tony Hancock's co-star in 'Hancock’s Half Hour' but will always be remembered for his work on Carry On films. He was known for his 'dirty laugh'. He was also known for being a dirty man too. 3. Nelson Mandela (1918-) - You don't get more famous than Mandiba (that's what they call him in South Africa). Nelson Mandela is the Father of the Nation, revered as a God. Mandela was the first black president and the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994. Words can't praise him enough. Absolute hero... 4. Desmond Tutu (1931-) - Desmond Tutu rose to fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. He became the first black South African Archbishop of Cape Town and is one of the most recognised figures in religion worldwide. Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005. He has done loads to promote world peace, hence the mention. 5. Francois Pienaar (1967-) - Pienaar was a distinctly average rugby player who did amazing things for his country. He became the first South African captain to lift the Rugby World Cup in 1995. It was hosted in South Africa, so people were pretty pleased that they won. 6. Dave Matthews (1967-) - He is in a good band . A very good band. They call themselves 'The Dave Matthews Band', which isn't a very original name. They are their own particular brand of 'travel rock' and definitely worth a listen. 7. Ernie Els (1969-) - Ernie Els is a professional golfer who has been at the top of his game since the 1990s. He used to be number one in the world long before Tiger Woods could even hold a club (probably). He is a pretty chilled character, and big too, hence his nickname 'The Big Easy'. He is in the 'World Golf Hall of Fame'. 8. Johnty Rhodes (1969-) - A cricket who literally sprang up everywhere. Wasn't particularly good at batting or bowling (which is predominately what you should be good at in cricket), but he was amazing at fielding. Regarded as the greatest fielder in the history of the sport. Watch his run-out of Inzamam ul Huq - absolute classic. 9. Charlize Theron (1975-) - A Hollywood starlet. She's famous for 'The Devil's Advocate' and 'The Cider House Rules', and won critical acclaim and countless awards for her wacky portrayal of a serial killer in 'Monster', becoming the first South African to win an Academy Award. Good looking too... 10. The Big-Bang Club (1990-1994) - A group of four photographers who tried to change people’s perceptions of South Africa and to raise awareness of the horrors of the apartheid through photography. The four photographers were Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and Joao Silva, two of whom won the Pulitzer Prize. A film is now being made about them - keep an eye-out. Activist drags Deziani, Adoke to EFCC Over Alleged Illegal Oil Deals A Federal High court sitting in Abuja has been asked to order the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC) to investigate the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deziani Allison-Madueke and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke over alleged illegal deals in the Nigerian oil sector. An activist, Comrade Timi Frank, told the court that by section 7 of the EFCC Act, the commission is empowered to cause an investigation to be conducted as to whether any person, corporate body or organisation has committed an offence under its act or other laws relating to economic and financial crimes In the affidavit in support of the motion exparte deposed to, by Frank, the plaintiff alleged that the revenues accruing to the federal government were never remitted in accordance with the sacrosanct and mandatory provisions of the constitution. According to the plaintiff in the affidavit, the possible areas of loss of revenues to the federation account are terms of sales, unjustified use of intermediaries, verification of “equivalent values” and importation and transportation of product. He accused the officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Petroleum Minister of illegal and unauthorised payment of subsidy on kerosene which is not a subsidised product and which is in outright violation of the then President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s directives. He further said that the oil theft in the Niger Delta has been going on for a while and got to the peak in the period of 2010 to 2014. dailyindependentnig.com/2014/09/activist-drags-deziani-adoke-efcc-alleged-illegal-oil-deals/ |
