HealthScientist Invents ‘robot’ That Kills Ebola Virus by msmon(op): 7:18am On Aug 26, 2014
By Sola Ogundipe
RECENTLY, in effort to eliminate Ebola
at the source, through use of innovative
disinfection technology, two “germ-
killing robots” were deployed from the
US to the JFK Hospital and ELWA
Hospital both in Monrovia, Republic of
Liberia, both hotspots of the Ebola
disease outbreak.
The robots, technically known as TRU-D
SmartUVC, were used to disinfect
health care environments where Ebola
patients are being treated. Good Health
Weekly gathered that TRU-D is the only
portable UV disinfection device on the
market with Sensor360 technology,
which calculates the time needed to
react to room variables such as size,
geometry, surface reflectivity and the
amount and location of equipment in the
room and effectively deliver a lethal
dose of UV-C light during a single cycle
from a single, central location in the
room.
Ultraviolet light
“It works by generating ultraviolet light
energy that modifies the DNA structure
of viral pathogens, like Ebola, so that
they cannot reproduce. Viruses that
cannot reproduce cannot colonise and
harm patients,” the inventor, a tropical
disease expert and medical
anthropologist Dr. Jeffery L. Deal noted
in an interview.
Deal and his colleague, Chuck Dunn,
President and CEO of TRU-D LLC,
respectively, spoke about the
importance of TRU-D to environmental
disinfection in
“TRU-D has been validated by more
than 10 studies to be 99.99 percent
effective in eliminating the most
common pathogens that can use health
care-associated infections.
After deploying germ-killing robots to
Liberia to aid in battle against the Ebola
Virus Disease, TRU-D SmartUVC
inventor traveled to the Ebola hotspots
with UV disinfection devices
TRU-D guarantees a pathogen-free
environment for patients and health
care staff. Deal, a Fellow in the Royal
Society of Tropical Medicine and
Hygiene, has been training hospital staff
to operate the devices in a number of
hospital environments and monitor
progress for successful disinfection.
“We developed TRU-
D SmartUVC
technology to combat
the devastating
effects ofhospital
acquired infections,”
Deal said.
“Unlike many
diseases, Ebola
strikes hospital
workers more than
any other group,
making it the
ultimate hospital
acquired infection.”
With TRU-D, health care leaders in the
U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Saudi Arabia
are eliminating pathogens like Ebola,
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome,
MERS, influenza, norovirus, Clostridium
difficile, Methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, etc., in
all types of health care settings,
including isolation wards, patient rooms,
operating rooms, surgical suites,
intensive care units, emergency rooms,
public areas and ambulances.
“We know through extensive CDC-
funded research specific to TRU-D
conducted by thought leaders in
epidemiology and infection prevention
that TRU-D is effective at eliminating
anypathogen by delivering a precisely
measured UVC dose.
“As soon as we knew we could aid
struggling hospitals in Liberia, our team
came together and formulated a plan to
get TRU-D on the ground. More than
200 TRU-Ds have been deployed to
disinfect hospitals across the U.S. and
internationally.
Significance
Between 10 and 15 percent of Ebola
cases have been among health care
workers. While most of this stems from
contact with the patient, concerns exist
that the physical environment can retain
active microbes and be a risk. This
device is used in the US to eliminate the
organisms that may still reside on the
walls, knobs, rails or any other exposed
surface in health care settings. The
robotic technology is capable of making
the Liberian hospitals safer for the staff
and for new patients.
Development
It was developed by a team of engineers,
physicians and industrial hygienists with
the purpose of decontaminating entire
rooms automatically
and eliminating concerns that a
contaminated surface was missed during
routine cleaning.
We use an ultra-efficient narrow
wavelength called UVC to flood the
room with germicidal energy. UVC
dosage is accurately measured and
automatically adapts to kill organisms,
even in shadowed areas.
UV disinfection technology and EVD
control
This technology is designed to prevent
the spread of the disease transmitted via
contaminated surfaces in health care
environments and is not a treatment or
a cure. We believe that prevention is the
best medicine.
The U.S. Army tested this particular
wavelength against Ebola and found that
the measured dose TRU-D delivers
results in incredibly rapid destruction of
the virus with its pathogen-specific
dosing options.. We know it is perfect
for use in this critical setting.
Merits/demerits
Multiple studies have already been
published from U.S. and UK academic
facilities of TRU-D’s ability to
decontaminate rooms, almost always
testing it against organisms that are
much more difficult to kill in the
environment than Ebola is.

Politics2015 Election: Politicians Exploiting Faults In Electoral Law —INEC by msmon(op): 4:33am On Aug 26, 2014
www.punchng.com/politics/politicians-exploiting-gaps-in-electoral-law-inec/

The Independent National Electoral
Commission has said politicians are
taking advantage of gaps in the
Electoral Act to campaign before the
stipulated time ahead of the 2015
general election.
Mr. Kayode Idowu, who is the Chief
Press Secretary to INEC Chairman,
Prof. Attahiru Jega, said the commission
was aware of the rallies, display of
campaign posters and other activities
politicians have been engaged in ahead
of the election.
Idowu told our correspondent that the
commission in collaboration with
political parties, was developing specific
guidelines that would complement the
Electoral Act in checking the excesses of
politicians.
Responding to allegations that INEC had
turn a blind eye to the rallies being held
by politicians in contravention of INEC’s
directive, Idowu, said, “INEC doesn’t
speak for any politician or political
party. INEC is a dispassionate umpire.
What is happening is that politicians are
exploiting and taking advantage of gaps
in the electoral law. The law is not
explicit about some things.
“For instance, the electoral law says
political parties should not campaign
before the stipulated time, but it is clear
about individual politicians, since they
are not political parties as mentioned by
the law, it is difficult to stop them by
law.
“Then what is campaign? How do you
define what and what constitutes
campaign? The people doing this are
clever. They would say something like
‘carry go,’ ‘the best man for the job,’
and so on. You don’t see them saying
“vote for this person for this position in
2015 general election.”
He added that INEC had held meetings
with the political parties with the aim of
drawing up a stricter guideline that
would ensure that no politician gets
away with engaging in activities that
would give them unfair advantage.
Idowu noted that the commission had in
the past penalised erring politicians, and
would not spare any ahead of the 2015
elections.
“INEC has not completely kept quiet
about this. In the past, INEC asked law
enforcement agents to intervene,
especially in cases where somebody
comes up to say ‘vote for me for this
position’ when primaries have not been
conducted. Law enforcement agents
have intervened in such cases in the
past,” he said.
Recent rallies by the groups seeking the
re-election of President Goodluck
Jonathan in different parts of the
country, have sparked several reactions.
Some politicians, particularly those in
the opposition, have criticised INEC for
not stopping the rallies.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State
House of Assembly and Chairman,
House Committee on Information,
Strategy, Security and Publicity, Mr.
Segun Olulade, called on INEC to justify
its neutrality by insisting on strict
adherence to the Electoral Act and
election timetable.
Olulade in a statement on Monday said
the endorsement rally which was held in
Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on
Saturday for Jonathan was in violation of
the 2015 election timetable.

BusinessEko Gas Scheme: Lagos Tasks Residents On Use Of Cooking Gas by msmon(op): 4:16am On Aug 26, 2014
In a bid to encourage the use of
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG),
popularly called cooking gas in Lagos,
the State Ministry of Energy and
Mineral Resources has taken the use of
cooking gas campaign to the grass root,
tasking residents to adopt this clean,
safer and cost-effective fuel because of
its inherent advantages.
Speaking during the distribution of free
EKO Gas cylinders and accessories to
residents of Alimosho Local Government
Area by the Ministry of Energy and
Mineral Resources, the Permanent
Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Regina
Iyabo Obasa disclosed that the Lagos
State Government is determined to
ensure that Lagos homes imbibe the use
of LPG because of its inherent
advantages.
She disclosed that Lagos State
Government introduced Eko Gas
Scheme as a domestic fuel of choice for
Lagosians in order to reduce carbon
emissions from the use of firewood and
kerosene and because of its inherent
advantages such as being cleaner,
healthier, safe, more efficient and
convenient to use for cooking.
‘’Lagos State Government is set to
introduce one million gas cylinders to
Lagos homes in the next five years to
make the use of LPG a success. This
exercise of sensitizing and distributing
free Eko Gas stove cylinders to
Lagosians has been undertaken in Isolo
LCDA, Eredo LCDA, and Badagry
Central LCDA,” she said.
She further stated that the State
government in conjunction with the
Lagos Chamber of Commerce and
Industry has mapped out plans to
sensitise and distribute Eko gas
cylinders with full accessories to other
local government areas on a weekly
basis till the end of 2014.
Also speaking at the event,
representative of the President of the
Lagos Chamber of Commerce and
Industry, Mr. Adewuyi Makinde
enjoined Lagosians and in particular
residents of Alimosho to embrace the
use of a cleaner fuel for cooking.
He disclosed that LPG popularly called
cooking gas is the cleanest and most
efficient fuel available today. Makinde
reiterated the determination of his
organisation to partner with Lagos State
Government in safeguarding the
environment against hazardous
substances emitted while cooking with
charcoal, firewood and kerosene.
Welcoming guests to the event, the
Chairman of the Local Development
Area, Hon. Israel Olusola Adekunle
represented by the Head, Human
Resources, Mr. Oluwo Ojo expressed his
delight at the initiative saying ‘’ words
cannot express how delighted and
inspired my humble self and members of
my cabinet are because this initiative
which is clearly an indication of
tremendous democratic development
and equitable distribution of the
dividends of democracy’’.
He re-echoed the importance of
switching to the use of LPG which he
said is possibly the cleanest and most
efficient fuel available today.
“Through the use of LPG in rural and
low income household, Lagosians can be
assured of better health, a cleaner
environment and more efficient and
faster cooking times,” he said.
Highlight of the event was the
presentation of free Eko Gas stove
cylinders to residents of the locality
including former National Deputy
President of the Nigerian Union of Local
Government Employees (NULGE),
Alhaji Arashi Omikunle and some food
vendors.
