The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has officially banned all social and entertainment activities on campus extending beyond 6:00 p.m., following the tragic death of Enugu-based auto dealer, Michael Nweze, popularly known as PowerAutos. The decision, announced in a statement by the university management on Monday, comes in response to the violent clash that erupted during a student-hosted bonfire event, which led to Nweze being fatally stabbed. According to earlier reports by Myschoolnews, the tragedy unfolded on Friday, September 12, near the Archaeology Department, opposite the UBA Hall of Fame, during a Faculty of Arts bonfire. Eyewitnesses said Nweze had attended the event with friends when his Mercedes-Benz GLK allegedly scratched another vehicle while he tried to drive out. Although campus security initially intervened and defused tensions, the situation escalated after Nweze left the venue. As he and his companions were heading out through the Odenigwe Gate, they were ambushed by a group of armed assailants in three vehicles. While his friends fled, Nweze confronted the attackers and was stabbed fatally in the neck. He died on the spot. Security officials quickly intercepted the suspects at the gate. Four individuals including one UNN student are currently in custody. Unconfirmed reports suggest the attack may be linked to a cult-related dispute, but police have yet to issue an official statement. The case has since been transferred to the Enugu State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) under the directive of the Commissioner of Police. In its Monday announcement made available to Myschoolnews, the university emphasized that the safety of its students and the need to maintain peace on campus remain its top priority. “Effective immediately, no social or entertainment event will be permitted to continue past 6:00 p.m., whether within or around the school premises,” the statement read. The restriction has drawn divided reactions among students and stakeholders. While some commend the administration’s quick response, others fear the decision may negatively impact campus life and cultural activities traditionally held in the evenings. For now, UNN remains under tight security watch as investigations continue and the community mourns the loss of a well-known entrepreneur whose life was cut short in the violence. In a case that has left the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) community in a state of anxiety and confusion, Ugwu Chukwuebuka Nelson, a 500-level Pharmacy student, has been missing since July 2024. Known to his friends as Buka T, Nelson's last known activity was informing his friends that he was heading out to pick up a waybill. He never returned, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Initial reports suggested that Nelson was detained in connection with the murder of Favour Okenyi, a first-year female student from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science whose body was discovered in a drainage on the UNN campus. This information, provided by an anonymous source, quickly spread, casting a shadow over Nelson's disappearance. However, further investigation by MYSCHOOLNEWS revealed that Nelson is neither in police custody nor held by UNN security, according to anonymous sources from these institutions. This revelation has only deepened the mystery and raised several critical questions. Could Nelson Have Been Killed? One of the most alarming possibilities is that Nelson may have met with foul play. The connection to the high-profile murder case of Favour Okenyi suggests that Nelson could have been targeted either as a suspect or as a victim of mistaken identity. The lack of any concrete evidence or leads from the police and university security raises serious concerns about his safety and the effectiveness of the investigation. Is Nelson Being Detained Secretly? Another angle to consider is the possibility that Nelson is being detained in connection with the murder case. The anonymous source's claim that he was arrested suggests that there might be more to the story than meets the eye. If he is indeed being held, why is there no official record or acknowledgment from the authorities? This secrecy could indicate a deeper, more complex investigation at play, or it could point to procedural lapses within the security apparatus. Is the Murder Connection a Diversion? The narrative linking Nelson to the murder of Favour Okenyi might be a red herring designed to divert attention from his disappearance. This tactic could be employed to cover up other motives or actions that led to his vanishing. The timing and circumstances of his disappearance warrant a thorough examination to uncover any hidden agendas or ulterior motives. The Role of Anonymous Sources The reliance on anonymous sources for information about Nelson's status adds another layer of complexity. While these sources provide crucial insights, their anonymity raises questions about the credibility and completeness of the information. Are there other witnesses or individuals with knowledge of Nelson's situation who have yet to come forward? The lack of transparency and accountability in the information provided by these sources complicates the search for the truth. Porous Security at UNN Nelson's disappearance has also highlighted significant security concerns at UNN. The fact that a student can go missing without a trace and without any substantial leads from the university's security apparatus points to serious lapses in campus safety. The murder of Favour Okenyi and the subsequent disappearance of Nelson underscore the need for a comprehensive review and overhaul of security measures at the university. Students, faculty, and staff must feel safe and protected within the campus environment. Impact on the University Community Nelson's disappearance has undoubtedly had a profound impact on the UNN community. Students, faculty, and staff are left grappling with Confusion and uncertainty. The university administration's response and collaboration with security agencies are critical in addressing these concerns and ensuring the safety of all students. The administration must take proactive steps to reassure the community and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. As the investigation continues, it is imperative to ask the necessary questions and seek answers from all possible angles. The truth behind Ugwu Chukwuebuka Nelson's disappearance remains elusive, but the relentless pursuit of justice and transparency is essential in unraveling this enigma. The university community and Nelson's family deserve closure and the assurance that every effort is being made to find him and bring clarity to this troubling situation. The University of Maiduguri recently administered an exam that included an unconventional question: “As a patriotic Nigerian, write the new national anthem in full.” The question, appearing as the second item on the exam sheet, has sparked discussions among students and social media users. The decision to ask students to compose a new national anthem has raised eyebrows. While some view it as an opportunity to foster patriotism and creativity, others question its practicality and relevance. The introduction of this exam question has sparked a broader debate. Critics argue that addressing urgent issues like inflation, insecurity, and economic challenges should take precedence over anthem changes. However, proponents emphasize the cultural significance of a new anthem in promoting patriotism and unity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ3mgNs0qEo Professor Ishaq Oloyede expressed his opinion on the long-standing debate regarding the first university to be established in Nigeria. During his speech at the Valedictory lecture of Professor Benjamin Ozumba, he brought up the issue and stated that there is no historical dispute that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) was the first university in Nigeria. Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, expressed his opinion on the long-standing debate regarding the first university to be established in Nigeria. During his speech at the Valedictory lecture of Professor Benjamin Ozumba, he brought up the issue and stated that there is no historical dispute that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) was the first university in Nigeria. The Registrar clarified that the University of Ibadan was not established before UNN, as it was only a University College at the time. "When someone say this is the first university in Nigeria, nobody in history can dispute it because it was the first university. University of Ibadan was not established before UNN, what we had was University college. You cannot write about the history of universities in West Africa without talking about UNN", he asserted. Expanding his discourse, Professor Oloyede extended scrutiny to the rivalry between the University of Ibadan and the University of Ghana, both vying for the title of West Africa's premier university. He debunked their assertions, labeling them as "mere colleges" upon establishment. Highlighting a pivotal distinction, he elucidated that graduates from these institutions were categorized as external candidates, signifying their affiliation with the University of London rather than with their purported alma maters. Further, Professor Oloyede's statement aimed to educate and provide clarity on the issue, rather than to patronize UNN. He emphasized that UNN was the first full-fledged university in Nigeria, and this fact cannot be disputed historically. In a candid interview with MySchoolNews TV, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, delivered a powerful message to students: “JAMB must be your enemy.” His remarks came during the valedictory lecture of the 14th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Benjamin Ozumba. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsW7jXTyFjY?si=0uBAFeGBuWWlWoRM Professor Oloyede’s statement challenges conventional wisdom. Rather than viewing JAMB as an ally, he emphasized that considering it an adversary could lead to better outcomes. “If JAMB is your friend,” he asserted, “then you are not doing what you are supposed to do.” According to him, treating JAMB as an opponent fosters a sense of urgency and commitment, ultimately driving students to perform at their best. In a recent development, JAMB has demonstrated its commitment to maintaining rigorous standards. During the Direct Entry registration exercise, the board uncovered 1665 fake A-level results. This revelation underscores JAMB’s vigilance in ensuring the integrity of the examination process. As students gear up for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled from April 19th to April 29th, the stakes are high, and all hands must be on deck. With the UTME just around the corner, students across the nation must intensify their preparations. JAMB’s insistence on being perceived as an adversary serves as a wake-up call. It encourages students to approach their studies with determination, discipline, and a healthy sense of competition. As the examination dates draw near, candidates should heed Professor Oloyede’s advice: make JAMB your enemy, and you’ll emerge stronger and better prepared. In the coming weeks, examination halls will witness the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. As students sharpen their pencils and review their notes, they carry with them the weight of their aspirations. JAMB, ever watchful, stands as both gatekeeper and guide—a challenge to overcome and a path to success. Let this be a reminder to all aspiring scholars: embrace the struggle, for it is through adversity that greatness is forged. As the clock ticks down to the UTME, may every student rise to the occasion, armed with knowledge, resilience, and the determination to conquer their academic Everest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmCBviBUM7U The Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU University of Nigeria, Nsukka Chapter, Dr Linus Moses Akata has asserted that SSANU is bracing itself for potential repercussions regarding its stance on the strike ultimatum. He made this known in an interview with MySchoolNews TV in the university environs. Akata disclosed that the strike came as a response to unmet agreements from 2022 by the government on the stoppage of the renegotiation of the 2019 agreement which was a Collective baining Agreement that took 8 years to reach, the release of end allowances they couldn't release as promised and the reconstitutioning of governing Council. However, one of the key concerns raised by the striking unions is the unequal treatment of non-teaching staff compared to academic staff. Despite assurances from the current administration, grievances regarding salary areas and essential services' payments remain unresolved as the federal government only paid 4 months areas to the academic staff. The strike, which commenced with a seven-day warning phase, has already disrupted essential services such as water supply, hostel maintenance, and academic activities. Gerardine, the Hall Governor of a hostel on campus, highlighted the challenges faced by students and staff since the strike began. "There is no water," she lamented, noting that even basic tasks like cleaning and hostel management have been affected. Furthermore, the strike has forced the postponement of Computer-Based Tests (CBT) exams, affecting students' academic schedules. Gerardine expressed concern over the lack of communication from the administration regarding measures to address the strike's effects on campus services. The strike's impact extends beyond water and hostel services, affecting electricity supply and security arrangements. While essential services like security have not joined the strike, concerns over fair compensation and working conditions persist among these personnel. In response to queries about the strike's duration and potential outcomes, the union representative emphasized their determination to press for their demands. They urged solidarity among NASU and SSANU members, emphasizing their resilience and readiness to endure further challenges if necessary. "He who is down fears no fall. We have being owed already so what is there? So it is just between the deep blue sea and the Devil Himself and the level of compliance will tell you that people are ready, even for the worst. You can cease as many salaries. If we could survive 8 months then they we can survive eternity", Akata affirmed. In a recent turn of events, Dr. Blessing Chinweobo, a lecturer in the department of Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), has threatened legal action against Myschoolnews, an online news platform. The dispute stems from a publication made by Myschoolnews based on a Facebook post by Dr. Chinweobo. https://myschoolnews.ng/omo-see-spacing-mass-communication-department-at-unn-promotes-academic-integrity-amidst-large-class-sizes Dr. Chinweobo’s original post on Facebook read as follows: “In Mass Comm UNN, most classes are almost 400 in number. Yes, the number is large, but we are very organized and have zero tolerance for all forms of academic malpractices. Today is Monday, and our Mondays are usually beautifully blue. Our students, nko? Be the judge.” A student, reacting to the lecturer’s post, highlighted students who appeared unprepared for an exam based on their expressions. The student’s comment read: “So I decided to zoom in. That girl’s face, though.” Dr. Chinweobo, in response to the student’s remark, asked: “Wetin do their faces? They are on hot seats, na.” The student replied: “It’s not just about the hot seats. I guess it’s about empty sheets.” On Thursday, 21 March 2024, Dr. Blessing Chinweobo, accompanied by armed security personnel, stormed the office of Myschoolnews UNN Branch. Subsequently, a staff member from Myschoolnews was taken into custody. However, the staff was later released on bail after a call from Prof. S.I. Ofoefule, Director, SERVICOM Unit. Dr. Chinweobo had previously called Myschoolnews, threatening legal action if they did not take down the publication. She emphasized that she disliked the headline attached to the picture and hinted that Myschoolnews has no right to use the pictures of students taking examination which was sourced from her social media page. However, Dr. Chinweobo failed to acknowledge that taking pictures of students inside an examination hall is against UNN guidelines. Furthermore, she maintained that Myschoolnews is supposed to contact her before using the contents she shared on the public domain. Myschoolnews, in response, stands by its publications, asserting that the company has the right to use pictures from the lecturer’s public social media page. As of this publication, the dispute remains unresolved, and both parties continue to hold their ground. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as legal proceedings unfold.
