IbeOkehie:
Oga @MT, this isn't a reasonable view of our reality here. I'm sorry, it just isn't. First of all, 40% of all homes in the USA are not on mortgage.

You've insisted we talk about INDIVIDUALS, right? Look at this home:
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3709-Kingsley-Pl-Raleigh-NC-27609/6430065_zpid/

Scroll down to the price history. As of 2011, the house was sold for about $160K. Today it's valued at over $600K. This is North Carolina, one of the average states, not particularly rich. There was ZERO real estate boom in this state, not even in the 2006 real estate craze. This is an average neighborhood in an average state, it's only recently prices have started rising. So imagine the kinds of capital being built up in places like California, Boston or Denver.

I happen to know the old Oyinbo lady that lived there, she and her husband actually bought it in the 1970s for around $30K. It was completely paid off. Remember, 40% of all homes in the USA are completely mortgage free. She lived in that house till she was too old to manage herself, then she moved in with her daughter who lived in I think Virginia.

I tried to buy that house in 2016, I thought the price was too high because, well Raleigh is a smaller city. It was was eventually sold in 2017 for $400K and the daughter got the money. For sure she got at least $300K. Remember, this daughter is just a working person like me, likely married, probably has already bought her own home wherever she lives and accumulating more wealth based on real estate and other investments. These are ordinary Oyinbo people, middle class salt of the earth, hard working Americans. By American standards they NOT wealthy.

Oga, $300K is how much naira? That's ₦300 million. How many Nigerians are worth that amount? We're not talking of life insurance benefits from the dead husband, not stock investment, no retirement or pension payments.

The person that bought that home in 2017 has already made a $200K profit if they sell today. For sure they'll walk away with over $100K.

I've given you a REAL LIFE example that I happen to know personally. If you visit your own home village in Nigeria, look around. I know that most of the newer homes in the past 10 to 20 years have been built by people living abroad. You know how many of them get the money? I'll tell you what TWO of my own friends did to build their homes in Nigeria.

They took out LOANS on the increased value of their homes. I know a taxi driver married to a care worker that did exactly that.

Guy there's an Asian friend of mine, I've already told him I talk about him online and use his family as an example when I talk to other Nigerians in real life. Get a load of this.

He's a pharmacist like me.
His mother is a nurse, the father is a legal secretary.
His brother is an engineer and the brothers wife is a medical doctor.
His sister is a medical doctor.

All the people listed above lived in the same house for at least 7 years. How much money do you think they accumulated in that time? So this my friend, when he moved out in 2010, he first bought a house not far from Capitol Hill in Washington DC then later bought the home he lives in now in Columbia MD. How many Nigerians are as rich as he is?

Yes he's not White, yes Asians EARN higher incomes than Whites, but the data shows that White Americans are still WEALTHIER than Asian Americans, they're the wealthiest demographic in the USA!

The major thing I've used to illustrate is REAL ESTATE, not 401K pension accounts and stock investments and businesses owned. Real Estate is biggest form of wealth held by the middle class in the USA.

Average, ordinary Americans are very wealthy. Half of all households in the USA earn $65K/yr and above. Excluding all billionaires in America, I'm willing to bet the average family in the USA earning over $65K/yr holds more wealth AND potential wealth than the average Nigerian family earning over ₦500K/mo or ₦6 million/yr. If I make it just White families, there will be no basis for comparison, it will be like asking a toddler to enter ring with Mike Tyson.

This is why Americans have no savings. As my Igbo people say it, when you see a little bird dancing on the road, there's something playing a song for him in the bush. The don't save because they don't need to. They're rich, they can solve their problems with accumulated resources.

Have a good day and Good Luck to Nigeria.
Figures, they say, don't lie.

Most of the figures you threw here are just your own assumptions. Everything you wrote centre around mortgages. How many americans are home owners? Most of the mortgages are wrapped in bubble, and always remember a time is coming there will be a bust. It happened in 2008 and lot of individuals committed suicide, and the world housing market was seriously impacted.

Does it take only home ownership to be above average. You veered from the topic of discussion.

You CLAIMED that:

1. Average, ordinary Americans are very wealthy - WEALTHY you say? That was an exaggerated lie !. 10% of earners in the US own 69% of the total wealth in 2023 while 50 percent of earners only owned 2.5 percent of the total wealth. So tell me how are ordinary Americans considered wealthy, according to your claim? (https://www.statista.com/statistics/203961/wealth-distribution-for-the-us/)

2. Half of all households in the USA earn $65K/yr and above - You are also wrong. Average salary in the US in 2023, according to Forbes is 58, 428 USD (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/average-salary-state-us-152311356.html)

3. Real Estate is biggest form of wealth held by the middle class in the USA. - This also turns out to be FALSE as the middle class still owns nearly two-fifths of the nation’s real estate (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2023/12/06/top-1-american-earners-more-wealth-middle-class/71769832007/)

4. First of all, 40% of all homes in the USA are not on mortgage - This also turns out to be FALSE. Only 23% of houses in the US has zero mortgages (https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnwake/2023/03/31/us-has-3rd-lowest-percentage-of-households-that-own-their-homes-without-mortgages/?sh=651588d33124)

@IbeOkehie you are just throwing up your own ASSUMPTIONS as FACTS.

Why most arguments dovetail to comparing Nigeria to America will never cease to amaze me. The discourse is most whites are not as rich as it seems. You started to compare Nigeria to US. Most Americans live on debt. They use credit cards which they need to pay back with interest. It is the system that makes most of them to APPEAR rich.

Please, stick to the point in a concise manner and stop veering off topic.

Citizens living on debt to buy houses, mortgages are not rich.

They are normalizing illegality because people just pay the fine and roll with it because they do not want to go through the process of litigation.

Despite the Appeal Court reaffirming the earlier judgement of the High Court that FRSC should ONLY operate on a federal road, will FRSC be breaking law if seen on state roads?

I asked because I saw them in different places on the state roads still operating, extorting and harassing motorists.

Also, is FRSC right to fine motorists for having a faded plate number, knowing fully well that they were responsible for issuing sub standards plate number to motorists.

I have seen lot of people fined on this.

So who are these Nigerians getting visas everyday?
Who are these Nigerians filling up Ethiopia airlines like 8 a day to Nigeria with other airlines?
Most of these flights are virtually filled up either while traveling out or coming back.
People are traveling out en mass everyday and coming in and most use the Nigerians only immigration route.
So who are these Nigerians getting visas? Every God damn days.
Where are they all getting visas for different countries when the japa crew nairaland version claim Nigeria passport is useless and can't go anywhere?
By now, I expect planes to just be 15 or 20% partially filled since Nigerian passport holders have been shadow-banned as they usually say it

TravelRe: Why Do Nigerians Think The Whites Are Richer compared to them? by MT(op): 2:00pm On Dec 12, 2023
IbeOkehie:
Actually they're much richer than you think. I would advise you to check data on wealth in the USA. Not only that, Black Americans are richer than Nigerians. Nigerians EARN high pay but OWN much less WEALTH. Wealth is built over GENERATIONS in a political systems that PROTECTS PROPERTY RIGHTS.

For example the OP wrote something about mortgages and how they don't own their homes. This quite wrong. I'll just make an offhand guesstimate that over 65% of homes in the USA are mortgage free. Most White Americans and many Blacks don't pay rent or mortgage...and even if they do it's a solid, guaranteed future wealth. This is NOT too hard to understand.

I don't blame una sha, it took me a long time to realize a lot of this. Look, think of it like this...the average or middle class White American has the same kind of wealth you have as a Native tribal person in Nigeria.

They have ancestral homes in their villages owned by their great grandfather and passed down over generations. My own home that I live in today was sold to me when the owner died and two sons inherited it. The owner bought it in 1970 and lived in it, adding and improving. Everything is recorded. Go and check cost of houses in 1970 and today and do the math. And there was ZERO money owed on the home.

Is it just houses? A young lady I worked with told me how her parents paid for her university education. Walmart shares and dividends. Apparently her parents bought shares for her back in the 1980s or something.

Back when I was in university one Oyibo friend took me to witness a tree clearing. Her father owned land passed down from previous generations of the family. They plant fast growing timber on it every year and harvest a portion every 3 years and sell to wood mills.

Just like Igbo people in Lagos go home for Xmas to their village homes, Americans in Chicago, New York and Houston go on Summer Vacations to their beach houses and farms and mountain cabins.

A large proportion of Americans live in rural areas on land they inherited. Those rural areas have most amenities you need for a good life like roads, police protection, good schools and such. And employment opportunities in factories and such. Here in North Carolina most factories are located in small towns. In Nigeria rural areas are dead zones.

The American people are Natives just the same way you're a Native of your tribe and own wealth you didn't work for or pay for.
THE DIFFERENCE is precisely what you've attempted to discount - socio-political organization. Your land in your ancestral village BY LAW doesn't even belong to you. The American people have organized their country in such a way they they LEGALLY OWN property. That secure ownership is what gives value. That is why MORTGAGE is more widespread in the USA than in Nigeria.

Why do all these Nigerian elites own homes abroad? Did you read how the Federal Government forced Abubakar Atiku to give up his shares in Intels? That shows ALL property ownership in Nigeria is at risk.

I actually am tired of these sort of discussions but the way wrong info is touted here to justify the NIGERIA IS BETTER THAN US/UK narrative is crazy.

Good Luck to Nigerians.
Why you are upending the discourse amazes me. I appreciate the fact you were civil in your submission to.

I am not comparing country to country. That is the regular argument here.

I am talking of PERCEPTION of whites has been so rich than the black.

How many families in the US has generations passed to them. You need to look at ratio of the citizens living there. I will appreciate a data to back up your arguments.

Do you know US has one of the highest homelessness in the world? How many of them have savings?

What I am saying is their countries cant be compared to Nigeria , it is far better off but the citizens are not as rich as Africans perceive.

My guy, I am right on point.
The westerners have a better standard as compared to Africans.

Take a good look at our society today, it is entirely driven by Western innovations. Roads, cars, houses, clothes, water systems, electricity, technology etc... I mean everything!
Aside copying the same west and traditional ways, what can Africans really do for themselves let alone offer the world?
Even the system of government they introduced Africans to, the black man is simply failing hard in all ramifications. Basic management, they cannot. They loot everything to the west, buy properties and even citizenship of Western countries instead of developing their own country and improving the standard of living for their citizens.
Nigerian politicians are classic examples.

Just look at Burkina Faso, instead of tackling the huge poverty crises, the government is busy trying to eradicate french language asif french is the cause of poverty in that country.

What I am trying to say in essence is, a better standard elevates the status of the citizens of such society. That's why people whose standard is largely below pair might want to associate and show off with the ones who has better standard.
I don't think it is about skin type or being a Westerner as your post is trying to insinuate.

China, India and their citizens were not any better than Nigeria and Nigerians few years ago. But today, they seems to be rewriting history, and the perception about the Chinese and Indians is gradually changing, so will the mentality of being fake, poor and wicked change overtime which will ultimately increase their worth in the eyes of the world and this will build confidence in their citizens if their country continue on the path of positive progress.
Standard of a country is different from Indvidual's wealth.

You are talking about their environment and country, I am talking about the citizens. Two different things.

America is a wealthy nation but she has one of the highest homelessness in the world.

Perception does not mean correctness. Perception is different from empirical facts.

To imagine that I've just finished watching the movie some minutes ago! Great movie! Thumbs up to the conception and production teams.

The movie left me kinda confused after the first few scenes, but once it set off, I could only look forward to the next action with anticipation.

With a majority of the story shot on a ship, I was apprehensive of a boring storyline (which, exactly, had been the case with a couple of foreign movies in similar settings I've previously seen); but not Blood Vessel. The suspense was topnotch and for long stretches, I could only hope for a positive outcome.

In the typical home video, there's this apparent reluctance to kill off the actors, but not in BV. Whoever needed to die at any point was so easily shot off. Until the end, I somehow hoped the pretty Oyinbrakemi would somehow survive the carnage or resurrect mysteriously, but home video done dey change o!

So Tekena is gone forever? May his soul rest in peace...
One of the very best movies that came out of Nigeria!!

This film must gather awards.

Tekena is an act in the movie. Was there a Tekena in the real world?
