genieluv: Holly I beg to disagree with you. English is a germanic language. It was simply a dialect of german that went through 'latin-ization' and 'celtic-ization' as the Anglo-saxons left the germanic speakers and mixed more with latin- derived languages speakers and celtic languages speakers. ***** I don't see how that was akin to 'pidginization' of the language.
>>>Pidgin evolves when non-natives of a language in an attempt to master the language adulterate it with influences from their original mother's tongues. The case with we Nigerians. Seems like you are Kenyan or Ghanaian? i stated very clearly that English is a Germanic language! Pidginization involves introduced words and alteration of grammar, let me illustrate. English and German : I am eating beef. Ich esse rindfleisch. The introduced word there is beef which is French in origin(boeuf in French ). The word Rindfleisch in German is literally "Cow flesh " .The French taught the English to assign new words for the flesh of different animals. Hence, pig meat (schweinfleisch) became pork, chicken meat became poultry and calf meat became venison. The German grammar also doesn't include the verb 'to be'(which appears as am in the English sentence ) in expression of the simple act of eating the said meat. It would have been literally 'Ich bin esse rindfleisch', but somewhere along the way they must have dropped it. Languages change their rules and add vocabulary all the time. No language has a monopoly on vocabulary, so borrowing is rife. Many a time languages have words that defy translation into another. Google the Portuguese word 'Saudade' and see what I mean. Yes, kenyan. |

TayserMahiri: Did they go back after the initial migration, or just stuck their guts there .? I think their proper name is Tivi. Is there a Tivi nigerian to teach us some Tivi here, including how they call themselves? Besides, they must have lost much of their Bantu vocab by now and acquired others from their neighbors. I think it's one of those academic terms like Niger - Congo, Congo - Benue, Nilo Saharan and the like. They must share some bantu elements though, since the cradle land of bantu peoples is in the region around the Cameroon /Nigeria border. |

bantudra: am just saying your swablabla is a corrupted form of bantu language......dont you ask why you have traces of arabic and indian in it.....??.. English is at least 60% Latin derived , and at least 1/3 of vocabulary is derived from French, and French itself is mostly Latin derived. Yet its grammatical structure and syntax clearly makes it a Germanic language. So you see depending on how you see it English is pidgin French, Latin or German!! Now tell me, why do Nigerians want to pidgin an already pidgined language? Isn't that language and cultural appropriation ? |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by MtuMsuper: 2:47pm On May 29, 2017 |
TayserMahiri: That should settle the debate on Swahili origins. Unless the likes of Bantudra want us to believe all Bantu languages are Arabic. Notice how all Bantu languages start with an 'i' sound before the name to imply language as opposed to people/ culture.. i.e KiSwahili, ChiShona, IsiZulu etc. Some have -Lu as in Luganda or Lusoga, others have -eke as in ekeGusii, some have -se as in SeTswana or SeSotho so its kinda a mixed bag. The guy has a problem whereby he wants to deny us agency, by claiming (ridiculously of course ) that our people's have no capacity for creation, hence the oyinbos or other lighter skinned person have done anything for us, including giving us language . If anything, we use an indigenous African tongue as a lingua franca, and not some corrupted version of an extra continental one. My bro, you have not studied Nigerian attitudes and opinions about other Africans at close range, like i have. If you get to meet and interract with them, you will be forewarned that you may plumb depths of ignorance about other Africans so deep and profound, you might drown. You already seen how he's lying about 'lion hunting' in Kenya by some 'German' tourist. He makes a claim, repeats it ad infinitum and tries to persuade us that it is true. We are told to accept his version of events by faith and nothing else. Just because he said so. No other details. We know of course sport hunting is illegal. If he has the cojones, he might give us the photo and provide incontrovertible proof that its in Kenya that this mythical lion hunter came to shoot lions. The only shooting of lions am aware of in Kenya is with a camera! |

TayserMahiri: This is true. I think Swahili is just too beautiful that some people are jealous Swahili is a Bantu language with many borrowed words from Arabic. It existed long before the arrival of the first visitors on the East African coast who were Arabs.
The Swahili morphology is similar to that of other Bantu languages. For example, when constructing a syllable just like in all other Bantu languages there are six structures i.e. (1) Consonant and vowel e.g. dada(sister) (2) Syllables formed from vowels only e.g. oa(marry) (3) Syllables formed from consonants only e.g. mtu(person) (4) Syllables formed from more than one consonants and vowel e.g.ngoja (wait) (5) Syllables formed from a consonant semi vowel and a vowel e.g. mwalimu (teacher) (6) Syllables formed from two consonants a semi vowel and a vowel eg mbwa (dog)
Bantu languages have nouns that are grouped into different categories known as noun classes. These divisions are based on grammatical agreement in a sentence brought about by subject noun agreement; Swahili has noun classes which also rely on subject noun agreement. Lastly, Swahili language has five vowels (a,e,i,o,u) just like other Bantu languages.
In fact, English is more Germanic than Swahili is Arabic. Ahem! Thanks for that eloquent response. In fact, the West and their literary and media emissaries are the ones most responsible for spreading this nonsense about kiswahili being of Arabic or other non African origin. It is a language of a people who in the past traded alot with other regions of the world. Hence the inevitable borrowing of words. Malay language has a huge % of Arabic words in its vocabulary, you don't see Arabs forming superior? 1/3 of English is of French origin thanks to William the Conqueror ! Portuguese, French, Romanian and Spanish borrows so heavily from Latin, you don't hear Italians forming superior! Gullible ones like bantudra swallow anything from google, Wikipedia or CNN, hook, line and sinker. In all its syntax, morphology, kiswahili is a Bantu language. It's the most prominent one, and is undoubtedly black Africa's most well known language. Check out this comparison of kiswahili and chiShona (Zimbabwe's major language ): Kiswahili. Shona. English Ng'ombe. Mombe. Cow Mbuzi. Mbudzi. Goat Msichana. Msikana. Girl Kuja. uya. to come Mbwa. Imbwa. dog tatu. tatu. three lala. rara. to sleep hapana. hapana. no usiku. usiku. night bantudra come to NL to learn about Africa!!! |

I always wondered what business Museveni had in DR Congo. Now I see. They would be here too. They've been claiming most of Western Kenya. Where do the Baganda fall? M7 and Kagame have murdered more than 5 million Africans in cold blood with their sick quest for domination and ethnic superiority ideology. It doesn't get mainstream press because they have the protection of the big western news misagencies who look the other way. I think if M7 tried his invasion nonsense on the western side of Kenya, he would meet an apocalypse of mega biblical proportions. He and his cohorts have been to Africa what Genghis Khan was to Asia and Eastern Europe: purveyors of Death and merchants of Destruction. |

Nowenuse: No, it's not like that.
Most states receive equal allocations from the FG, the cost it will take to build a road connecting 2 towns in Anambra state (South) for instance, is not the same cost it will take to do likewise in a state like Niger state (north) that is more than 10 times the size of Anambra state.
A school may be built in a rural community in a Southern state for instance and people from up to 3 neighbouring communities who have no schools yet can easily trekk a shorter distance to attend such a school, but in the north it is a different case, the nearest community to another might take a whole day or half a day journey on foot. This completely discourages every dream of those from a community who has no school yet from going to school, hence increasing illiteracy in the north.
Hope you get the point? Who runs the Federal roads in Nigeria? I read sometimes on NL that a state does a federal road and gets reimbursement from Abuja. Paint me a picture of how they organise roads in nigeria, coz that's a funny scenario if you ask me. |

Hbuyosh: And the govt did little to nothing to develop that area, right? That is marginalization.
The same was the case here in Kenya; the northern region is vast, volatile, dry, thinly populated; thus largely neglected by the previous govts. But all that is changing now. Yes, very true. In the past many African govts have had a sick approach to development which in many instances involved marginalization of entire regions, and hence ethnic groups. We should all thank the new constitution,, it guarantees development for all regions regardless. |

Muafrika2: Uganda too?
I've heard of the legendary Bairu from a Nairalander, but in relation to Rwanda's Hutu. How do they live together? Is it an Indian kind of caste system?
Sounds like a bunch of calculating opportunists. I doubt that is going to change. Bairu actually means peasant. Yes, i have a munyankole friend who was telling me fantastic tales. Even the one where a king sat on the back of a peasant as a stool and stabbed someone's foot as a rest for his spear. The farming caste were prohibited from owning cattle and had to trade produce for milk and meat. They were also forbidden from slaughtering cows. The dynamic was just the same. The Congolese Tutsi also have a tradition of looking down on and speaking down to peasant tribes. That's why anti tutsi sentiments are always strong in the lacustrine region of EA. In fact you're right, there is a rigid caste system among those tribes from the regions around SW Uganda, Rwanda/Burundi and the adjoining areas of Congo DR. It involves cattle ownership, dietary bans, and social discrimination. Amongst the banyankole its so serious that M7 has decided to stall or stymie calls for the reinstatement of the monarchy amongst his tribe because some enlightened, egalitarian and social revolutionary NRM types scream human dignity and repeat the scary and fantasy like horror stories about what it was in the past to the rest of the people to embolden their point. |

Muafrika2: Legend has it that they came from the North, after the Hutu (Bantus) had settled on the land. They got into a pact which included mixing and sharing of power. They even adopted a bantu language. Until the Tutsi became power hungry and subdued the hosts.
It is said that the Tutsi were very ruthless toward the Hutu. A common saying is that when the Tutsi king wanted to rise from his seat, he called a Hutu and dug his spear into his foot as his support.
The last straw was the European colonialists using the Tutsi, who readily collaborated with them, to dominate the Hutu. Then, guess what, upon independence, they switched the roles and left power in the hands of the Hutu. Recipe for disaster. The genocide was bound to happen. very much true. The same cushites also settled amongst other tribes in the interlacustrine region and adopted the tongue of the native bantu group, and the same 'Hutu - Tutsi' social class developed amongst the banyankole and batooro of Uganda. The superior - inferior social relationships between the two groups is enveloped in a sad and brutal /demeaning treatment of the hutu group in Uganda. The Hutu group is called Bairu in lunyankole, i saw first hand social relations in that part of Uganda and i felt so sad for them. M7 belongs to the Tutsi group of his tribe and he displays alot of the same disdain they are famous for, and extends that spirit to how other tribes are treated and allocation of resources. Whoever told you an African leader will be unbiased and non tribal in allocating development or resources needs a hot slap. |

Infact, if i call the name of my ethnic group, most Nigerians here will not know it. However, i am still not ashamed of my ethnic group.
Why are u ashamed? Being from a "small" ethnic group is not important. Being from the larger human family is. Your primary identity should always be human. All other identities are social constructs that are as fragile as a discussion on who has more skyscrapers. And just as easily demolished. That being said, most Africans have not learnt how to manage ethnicity or even understand its role (it cannot be wished away in the name of political PR! ). |

freshest4live: You have misunderstood my argument, l'm not saying Nigeria isn't living under her weight or saying the British caused all problems, but rather you can't compare Nigeria's foundation to that of western countries and not even to south Korea. Japan colonizing south Korea is child's play, they are still alike and understand themselves better than the Nigerian- British relationship. You are also making excuses for Ghana, there are smaller countries in Europe doing much better than Ghana and with lesser resources, by your logic, this shouldn't be so. Resources do not make nations but education and ideas. Congo has far more resources than we have, l also used to think Ghana was called the gold coast because of gold correct me if l'm wrong though. So my point is you give Ghana far too many excuses if we are to go by your standard against Nigeria and you underrate the continual effect of colonialism especially from the French on the continent. There was a time ECOWAS was about introducing Eco as the only currency for west African states, the francophone nations kicked against it, because they valued the French currency, Nigeria had no power to face the French and so the idea was abandoned. This is why l say Africa is still colonized indirectly and the comparison with South Korea is out of place. Wow! I am still not believing this is you. You are spot on all the way here. Oga, we all need sense like a camel in the desert needs water! I especially agree with you on the negative French influence in West Africa. It pains me. |

Hati13: There are also Semites and Omotic, but few in numbers. The Nilo-Sharan family language speakers in Ethiopia now are only found on Ethio-Sudan boarder.
What was the cause for Bantus expansion to Eastern and Southern Africa? Bantu expansion was one of the most epic movement of African people. It happened due to the human desire to expand and explore, but the major factor that pushed it on was the discovery of iron, and the weapons and tools that came with it. The Bantu expansion started in the middle to late iron age and went on till the arrival of the colonialists. Thus the Xhosa were still expanding by the time the whites arrived. With iron, they were able to grow more food with iron hoes (as opposed to wooden hoes) and make swords and spears to conquer or subdue new lands. If you study the mythology of many Bantu tribes you discover the existence of a mysterious small people who were invariably pygmy. Many of those pygmy tribes were either conquered, assimilated or annihilated. The were many waves and dispersals along the way, such that there are major difference in body types for example. The was a group that arrived in East Africa and encountered cushitic peoples from whom they learnt cattle keeping. Alot of the practises and vocabulary around cattle have cushitic origins. This group then spread south all the way to South Africa. This is why Bantus from Central Africa don't know much about or keep cattle. |

There are 110 languages spoken in Sudan, but Arabic and English are the official with Arabic being widely spoken. Ironically Sudanese Arabs in Middle Eastern countries like Israel fa.ce racism for being dark-skinned while non-Arabs in Sudan also face discrimination by Sudanese Arabs. I think more open minded Sudanese Arabs tend to acknowledge their diverse ancestry or history more. Africa was never the Arab homeland, Arabs were from the Arabian peninsular, so any Arab from Africa is either a product of Arabization and or mixed. Arabization will be their downfall. Egypt just steals the cake when it comes to Africa, when there are tons of equally interesting cultures, kingdoms/empires and civilizations through out Africa. That's why you see ignorant people say that Africans other than Egypt didn't develop a system of writing. This is of course not true, but people who only learn about Egypt tend to think the rest of Africa is empty due to lack of information.
*Facts* There are more Nubian pyramids than Egyptian pyramids. I wish the present north Sudan govt and people can adopt attitudes and practices that allows them to study/acknowledge their pre Islamic heritage with the same or equal respect majority Muslim Egypt does to its own. At least Egyptians understand that they are the descendants of multiple people's and heritages and they eschew extremism in their religious practices I like the Egyptian attitude towards life and modernity, and especially the tolerance of religious expression (well that's under threat nowadays ). Instead, north Sudan have adopted a Wahhabist view of the world, what a shame esp considering their own history as being once Christian. |
