I had no idea we run things differently from S.A. I thought we are doing well since Moi left? What exactly do we need to change? Japan is always a good example, I love their open mindedness. Those guys even sent hundreds of Japanese to the west when they learned how far behind they had fallen. How is sport run in S.A? I thought we punch above our weight in sports with athletics, rugby, volleyball and now even Javellin. Not many countries with our GDP achieve half of that

No bro,sport is a mess in Kenya. Sorry guys. I have been to SA before and saw the first years of life after apartheid ended and still keep in touch with trends there. For starters:
Sporting federations are strong.
Participation is high.
Best Practices are used.
Proliferation​ of clubs, big and small.
The full range of sporting disciplines practised by her citizens.
Functioning and frequently used sports facilities.
Regular haul of medals.
A REAL ministry of sports.
Sports related commercial activity and actual contribution to the economy is calculates each year.

Our Athletes and other successful sportspersons are largely the product of their own sweat and not a well oiled system. We got alot of catching up to do.

Am an advocate of changing the whole structure of our country to mirror successful western nations. Japan ended a period of 500 years seclusion in the 1870s and began wholesale modernisation that involved copy catting european countries. By 1900, they were a maritime power and by the end of 1918, an industrial power. Crucify me people, but the ad hoc way we run african nations is just a complete disaster. Decision making and systems from hell. I mean, somebori somewhere in Lagos for example thinks its not important to have a fire brigade, hence the Honey sucker boys think they can be a substitute. Where does such thinking come from?
Lets emulate the way SA sport is run for instance.

There is a very big difference between other African countries and S.A. Everyone sees successful black south africans as relying on the whites for their achievements. There is a perceptible level of freedom for other African countries. Sports is a great example.

I think SA is successful because of the systems in place. Most african countries rely on the whims and the whimsical existence of a big man in power to drive the economic, social and political agenda. I would rather we emulate them so that the country prospers irrespective of the office holders, despots not being counted(no country ever truly prospers under one).

At this point its impossible. But back all they needed was to create a VERY hostile environment and the whites would have left one by one. The worst part is it took them too long to gain independence and whites had multiplied too much. Yeah. But remember the dutch first settled South Africa in 1652! 1652!!! They created a new ethnic group together with some other europeans and called themselves Afrikaners. And called their language afrikaans. The british whites came much later in the 19 th century and they brought loads of indians with them, pretty much like they did in east africa. The europeans were fond of dragging people from one continent to another, and slaughtering natives in the ones they coveted. We just have to live with the consequences of those actions.

I think Zuma is trying to build a family business dynasty like what akina Moi, kenyatta,Mugabe, M7, Chiluba have done. Some of his counterparts in the ANC eschewed the revolutionary path after 1994 and chose the corporate path and the best example is Cyril Ramaphosa. Winnie Mandela was and is the true revolutionary.

I don't feel black South Africans have got their independence yet. It's so sad. When i think of SA, i feel like the economy and GDP of a country is the last thing that matters. Acceptance and influence in your own country, FREEDOM, PEACE AND PRIDE is what these ppl need

There is something they call Black Economic Empowerment and Land Redistribution in SA, it seems its not working as well as they want it to. Somebody called Julius Malema has stolen the show from the ANC ,but i dont think hes the real deal.

The entire political leadership of south sudan and somalia live in nairobi housing estates, take their children to kenya schools, deplete our resources and patience, use our social,banking and other infrastructure; and we have to put up with their obtuse nature for better measure. The alternatives for them (Uganda,Ethiopia,,Sudan,Tanzania) are too dire and wanting in every respect. I know one South Sudanese who told me that whenever he steps in kenya, the first thing he searches for is fried chicken! These guys have a stone age country. Another told me whenever he goes back after a spell in kenya, he stocks up on carton upon cartons of long life milk. Yet another wanted to collect as many plastic supermarket bags as he could to be used as school bags by south sudanese kids. In the african nation of Rwanda, kenyan teachers are revered for their thoroughness and sheer talent. Virtually all top schools in Rwanda have a staff compliment of majority kenyans. Their young professional classes and the next generation to ascend to power have been educated by kenyan teachers. Many top ugandan officials lived in and educated themselves and their kids in kenya, including Museveni himself. I grew up with many top ranking ugandans, you would think we were relatives if you saw us nterract. The odd boy out is Tanzania who have had a historical abrasive attitude towards kenyans owing to their previous socialist path, and kenyas capitalist orientation. We shall hopefully build some social capital with these rather belligerent south sudan guys, but there is hope as some of kids i see are very kenyanised and hold social views akin to their kenyan peers.

Being a kenyan is a state of mind, more than a nationality.

if you have a desktop or laptop and a broadband connexion, i suggest you use youtube. Pronounciations and accents are no biggie, we all have them. With time fluency improves.

Yes of course. Hausa is like an opressors language and with time it will decline in Nigeria. It may never decline in Core-northern Nigeria, but it will decline in Central Nigeria, probably Northern Ghana and Northern Cameroon too.
Like my home city Jos, Hausa used to be the sole lingua franca, but now Pidgin has infiltrated and is gradually displacing Hausa.

Swahili has the potentials, but until a powerful united EAC emerges, which will dominate African media, business, wealth and entertainment, i don't see Swahili exceeding it's current boundaries.

Words like Afande(meaning sergeant, and duniya are also found in Bahasa Indonesia courtesy of the Ottoman Empire and Turkish influence. Brits adopted curry into their cuisine from India and east africans adopted foods such as chapati,dengu(green grams), samosa and kachumbari from india via the British Empire. Kachumbari itself entered India via Iran(persia).
Swahili is bigger than you think. Kenya does most of the promoting while our southern neighbours are rather lackluster​ in the publicity arena. I recently opened a youtube video where oyinbos in wisconsin university were speaking kiswahili far much better than a local. There used to be a famous american oyibo actor in a slapstick comedy on national TV in the 80s and 90s, ill track his name down.

Okay, thats great. I hope one day, Black Africans would adopt a unifying language. Swahili and Naija Pidgin are the most influential right now, but swahili has a better edge.
Hausa language have what it takes to challenge Swahili and even unite West Africa, just that most Hausa natives and speakers practice the kind of islam that is anti-progressive and they are still very very backwards.

I speak Hausa though and i have observed that Hausa has some similar words with Swahili like DUNIYA, HATARI, and some others which i might have forgotten. I guess this influence is from Arabic, because 25% or more of Hausa words and grammar come from Arabic.

Actually DUNIA is Turkish. Hatari means danger/ dangerous. Swahili is a living language that constantly adopts new words. There are 2 regulatory bodies for the language and unlike Hausa it doesnt bear the baggage of an oppressors language. I stand to be corrected on the latter, but that is what i can fathom from alot of posts in nairaland centering on the hausa language use.
People in central africa are very conscious of language use, they dont like foreign impositions. But you are right, kiswahili is best placed to succeed in africa. In kenya many congolese refugees try s much as they can to kenyanise their swahili, which is very different in vocabulary meanings. I salute those efforts

Imagine if Athi River mining, Mombasa cement, Bamburi cement and Blue Triangle cement were all given tp one license holder by govt of Kenya, and all his competitors strangled. The same individual would generously fund all political players to give a semblance of fairness, to fool the casual observer. Don't you think this individual would be a billionaire in no time?

Many Nigerians just have the hussling spirit and 'i must succeed mentality' especially Southern Nigerians from low income houses.
Hardly will you ever find low income Central or Northern Nigerians leaving Nigeria to another African country for hussling. We rather remain in our villages and farm.
I am from a middle class home however, so i may never really understand what those from low income homes go through as such.

However, so, are you saying that you learnt this pidgin just by interracting with those few naija peeps? Or also tru Naija music and movies?

Almost entirely from nairaland. Pidgin has no definite rule so you can break it and mash it at will. You can use your own style. Am told pidgin from the oil delta is very complicated and many use it as mother tongue?

French escaped me. Its not too difficult to learn. You become a tolerant person if you live in a household where more than 1 language is spoken/heard. Even more if you grew up in such a place.

Funnily enough, some years ago, a group of nigerians caught overstaying in tanzania were deported to kenya border and they claimed to be kenyans , even though their accent , dressing and phenotype was straight from a nollywood movie. Tanzanians love abandoning deportees at kenya border.

You see, if you speak to a man in a language he understands,it goes to his head, if you speak to him in his language ,it goes to his heart.
Last year, we were on a construction site somewhere in the countryside of kenya, and i was tasked with taking a group from Germany who were on a familiarisation tour of the project at hand since the German agency KfW, partly funded the project at 10%. The three of them had passable spoken english but many were the times when explanations were lost completely in language since they spoke heavily accented 'German English' and we spoke heavily accented 'Kenyan English'. I quickly realised what was afoot: the message wasn't getting through to them Without any warning, whatsoever i asked my MD if i could proceed in German. And without waiting for an answer from him, i did the rest of tbe presentation in my rarely practised but passable German. The look on their faces was precious.The older one amongst them was in fact spellbound and speechless throughout. Afterwards, alot of social capital was created, which I have yet to exploit. This episode made me realise that practising communication skills is and can be a game changer. I think also, there is a difference in communication styles and meanings between different peoples across Africa, and we have yet to study each other patiently and with reason, in order to get around misconceptions in intonation,body language and other forms of non verbal communication.

You should try a few phrases in kiswahili too. Do you know how i love surprising people in their language. Nigerians watch out, i dey come oo. Next i dey try yoruba ,maybe hausa....i cant make my mind up!
