See how a fellow so called Nigerian/Kenyan has contributed to the economy of Kenya just by posting pictures of good places in that country, yet same people will complain about our economy. You can hype another person's country but speak badly about your own, in the end it is you that will lose

If this man had picked a place in Nigeria to hype, he would have generated jobs for the folks that live there and also helped the tourism industry in that region

Many paid foreigners are on nairaland to promote their countries to gullible Nigerians

Bros, are you aware how much money Nigerians can make from cultural tourism? Just by taking foreigners to different cultural festivals in organised groups with a seriously well planned itinerary, around the country without being a nuisance to the local community concerned? I see the Ghanaians doing it alot when they bring over lots of Aframs and carribeans to attend the various festivals and stuff. You can look up the tourist brochures of some european cities and see how they come up with a cultural tourism calendar for the year and use it as a model. Believe me bros when i tell you tourism pays and pays well.

Ok i have heard you.

Just that what you are saying is not limited to Kenya alone.
My grandfather is almost 80 and he uses the internet too on his android phone, not to talk of my parents in their 50's who are now even more active than me on facebook and whatsapp and always ask me why i am not active there (that's because i spend more time on Nairaland and Quora, as i like to engage in political discussions more)

Okay why is it that Kenya gives other African countries (even like SA, Tunisia, Cape verde e.t.c who are very developed) a very wide margin in your source? This is not about Nigeria again now.

I juxtaposed your source and mine and i discovered that there was no wide discrepancy in the figures of other African countries except for Kenya?? Why should it have been only Kenya?
If you are using the time frame as a criteria to judge my source as being outdated, so are you now trying to tell me that within the space of 2 years, internet access in Kenya grew by 25%? For real? What about countries like SA, Tunisia and others? They did not grow too? Why only Kenya with the huge discrepancy?

Bros, abeg u check am na, e get as e be na.
The same dynamics of consumption do not exist across african countries merely because they are in africa. Go back in this thread and see a presentation i made on mobile money usage and the dynamics therein in Kenya. I lifted it from a pdf , and it was done by a nigerian marketing company nonetheless. Kenyans consume differently than what you would expect.
Lemme give you an example. How many SA companies have tried and not succeeded on the kenyan scene? Quite a number, the most famous of which is SAB Miller, the makers of castle beer. They wandered into the market and met a formidable opponent in the name of EABL who played patriotic card to keep its decades long customer base. Admittedly a cheap stunt, but it worked.
When it comes to internet access, 4 factors stand out clearly:
1. the arrival of undersea cables such as SEACOM(and 2 others) and a massive roll out of a nationwide network of fibre optic cables that criss cross the country. This infrastructure is given the same priority as roads and other physical infrastructure.
2. The availability of a wide range of cheap smartphones, mostly of chinese manufacture. Somebody in the phone section of NL asked a question as to why smartphones are much cheaper on jumia kenya than jumia nigeria, and i gave an answer.
3. A deliberate and massive drive by govt to incorporate ICT education from day 1 in primary school. It might have had hiccups at inception , but its surely steaming ahead now.Come to Kenya and see loads upon loads of rural and urban kids swiping away at tablets and turning on their school issue laptops like any western kids. I kid you not.
4. The massive upswing in electrification across the country. Its been happening at a frightening pace esp in the last 3 years. The access to electricity goes hand in hand with the desire to own appliances. You should come to Kenya and go to a newly connected small town today and see how the demand for refrigerators has sky rocketed. Along with such demand comes a need to own the knowledge to operate them and most of this can be found on the internet. People in rural areas have farming, church, family whatsapp groups and many people also want email addresses in order to "look modern".

Are all these factors present in the countries you mentioned in the exact same intensity as kenya?

You should see it within a country specific context. African contexts differ. For example, what is the favorite hot beverage in Nigeria?
Ps: I am a keen Quora participant/reader too. Love it.

You're just stubborn. Who between wikipedia and the website i gave you are more accurate and up to date. You think the UN has never been fed and dished out bogus data? How many times will you be told wikipedia is a mere guide and so so many of it's entries out of date. Its content is user generated and verified by peers. Many many times they are way off the mark.

I hope the data didn't shock you, its just bloody true, sad to admit. My own mother is 65 and i taught her how to use whatsapp, which i communicate with her everyday. Everyday! Mid next year i intend to install wifi in her house to stop her using expensive bundles. Her rural farm is near a major town so its no biggie. My 62 year old mother in law communicates to me via whatsapp as well and i have been on the end of a losing battle with her other children and grandchildren for her not to open a facebook account which she duly did just last month. So far she has 164 friends and counting. Bros, internet is real in kenya so stop using the false premise that being a rural dweller excludes one from the internet.

Ps: It has been shown in this thread that there are more bank branches per 1,000 pop in Kenya than in Nigeria. Search for that mini convo. Nigeria has large banks and that's it. They don't seem to be able to bank the less affluent, something kenyan banks have excelled in. Mpesa is a payment platform more than a money sending service nowadays, some people i know never carry cash, just their boring mobiles.

If the Hausa-fulanis and Yoruba form an alliance in Nigeria, that is already about half or more of the country's population.
Igbo and Hausa-fulanis have had alliances in the past.
Igbos, Yorubas and most minority groups had to team up against Hausa-fulanis in 2015 to elect Goodluck as president.
There will always be change of alliances. No alliance would be stable.

Now, in a united west Africa per say, up to 4 or 5 large groups would have to unite in order to have half of the country's population or at least a strong force to reckon with. Now, how easy do you think it would be? People will begin to loose ethnic interests because the new nation would be far bigger than ethnic groupings..

Also, if there is decentralization of power, people would mostly only be interested in their states and not the central governments.
This is similar to what you have in India!
This is the bane of african politics. Ethnic groups ganging up to lock out others in order to loot the little public resources they have, and only the respective elites enjoy. Kenya, Nigeria, Ivory Coast are very guilty of this.
We should all emulate the Tanzanians whose founding father had the foresight and wisdom to see what a futile endeavour this was. They organise their politics around the party manifesto ethnicity has no role.

Only South Africa was ahead of Nigeria in the ranking based on percentage!
It seems like you do not know how to use wikipedia, did you not check the reference source of the wiki page? It was directly from ITU (also a world statistical agency).

So you possibly believe your Kenyan ranking of 77% and being the African country with the highest internet usage percentage? Even ahead of South Africa with such a gap?
I think they were probably counting Mpesa banking as access to the internet. If not, there is no way Kenya can beat Nigeria, SA and Tunisia with such a large margin.
Look at this one. Youre even trying to dispute facts from that towering website about internet stuff. Did you also know we have the fastest and cheapest internet in africa too? Stop trying to be obtuse by inserting your well known anti kenyaness into the argument.

Ok sir, am not really the arguing type so i won't be going back and forth with you on this matter. Again if you are as good as you claim at math and basic logic we won't be having this conversation in the first place.

Yes sir,

its a fact the Gdp of lagos doubles every 2.5 years infact it was already on the verge of doubling $131 bn shortly before the recession so it fell back to just $91 billion.

Its also a fact New York is not growing(Its has not significantly grown since 1998. Roughly 20 years) and the little growth it experienced can easily be argued away with inflation and the economic meltdown of 2008 even with the American economy on negative interest rates. But am not sure you know how these things factor into calculating a GDP or maybe the hatred you have for Nigeria is blocking your frontal cortex from processing the obvious stats and data before you.

For the last time sir, visit the link below study the chart, also im really in doubt you know how to calculate inflation so i went the extra mile of finding you an elementary inflation calculator(You can find the link below also). You should calculate the Gdp of New York along with the stated inflation you get from the calculator (Provided you know how to use it grin grin). Then go do the math and see if am a liar like you have been claiming or maybe you are just been naive.

Finally, am alarmed that you said "YOU in proving how inflation can distort economic growth". Seriously if you don't know inflation is the major factor that affects economic growth and performance am not sure we should be having this conversation. But in my infinite graciousness. i helped you with a link that explains in great detail how inflation affects the GDp and vice versa

Cheers

Thanks for the little inflation calculator, its now bookmarked.
Of course i know how inflation can completely wipe our growth, i have read alot about the Great Depression of 1930s and how the end of slavery in the US caused massive inflation, wiping out economic gains made under that system. Nigeria's recession likewise led to a similar situation, this being caused by a slump in oil prices and hence federal govt revenues, since nigeria depends on oil revenue for majority of its revenue.
Which makes me wonder, why would you say Lagos is growing at 31.9%(that's what doubling every 2.5 years means). Is there another boom industry powering Lagos and escaping the rest of Nigeria? Abeg, which kain growth ? Be honest

According to International Telecomunication union (ITU)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_Internet_users

Nigeria has the 2nd highest percentage population of Africans connected to the Internet with 47% (86 million) of the population followed by Kenya with 46% while that useless Ghana of a country comes at 23% (even with their stable 24 hrs electricity).

You see, when people ask, how is the huge Nigerian GDP affecting the ordinary Nigerian. I just see them as plain being stupid.

Nigeria currently has the highest or among the highest middle class percentage population in SubSaharan Africa, unlike countries like Ghana where you just have the rich and the poor alone.

ITU's statistics is likely outdated or debateable because as of last year, 97 million (50% or above) Nigerians were estimated to have access to the internet and were active internet subscribers.

http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/192485-nigeria-internet-users-increase-to-97-million-ncc.html

We all know that it takes at least a middle class citizen in Africa to be an active internet subscriber. This tells us the huge population, power and percentage of Nigeria's middle class citizens.
Nigeria internet users is larger than the population of the UK. What of percentages? Isnt that what counts?
Check this link to clear any doubts. From the worlds best trusted site on internet usage across countries, and its as recent as march 2017, so it carries faaaaar faaaar more weight than wikipedia.: http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats1.htm

Ok,
Lets analyse all you've said one by one:

firstly you said:
1. "I think if i was to believe your figures, a growth from 700 bn$ to 1 trn $ is still growth":

Yes sir there is something called inflation so a growth from $700 billion to $1 trillion over the period of 20 years cannot be technically classified as growth. Why? because if you calculate the inflation $700 billion dollars 20 years ago is roughly about $1 trillion now.

The Dollar is "supposedly" backed by "Gold"(America claims to have the largest gold reserves in the World) but America is also operating on Negative interest rates.

I would have loved to tackle your other points, but am sure that if you are as good in maths as you claim once you can calculate the inflation by yourself. you would have successfully answered most of your other questions.

Also,
No need to be abusive, using abusive word when arguing or countering an argument usually stems from low a intellectual point of view on the subject matter.

If you need help with the math let me know grin grin
You still won't accept will you? You cant provide any proof that Lagos GSP grows by 31.9%!!! That kinda growth would make the world take notice wouldn't it? And the world hasn't. Why? It isnt happening, period. and because you are peddling a falsehood. IDK, maybe i should always have a thesaurus nearby because the word liar sounds so strong, ill look for an alternative word for somebody is economical with the truth. Maybe ill label you a Truth Economist.
The burden of proof lies with YOU in proving how inflation can distort economic growth. (i.e Americas growth) You say 70cts in 1970s america is 1 $ now, ill fact check that.
It stiil doesn't detract from your outlandish claim about the "growth" of Lagos. While on this prove to me whether Olamide on the streets of Lagos eats GDP or garri.

1.lagos has an extensive water transportation system, even where the bridge will be located is currently one of those system.we only want to (a)decongest the three bridges plying that route (b) the two connecting places are new settlements of lagos,it serves as another form of easy access for them not for now but for future purpose.
2.u cant travel from lagos to calabar or Onitsha by water cos they aren't connected with eachother.SIMPLE.
Question not answered.
I have actually viewed a technical report from Nigeria on the matter from the 1980s, so i know what's going down. If youve ever seen the ferries plying Britain and Netherlands/Belgium or the internal network in Germany/Netherlands, youll know what i mean by water transport as a segment of the transportation network. I expect something along the lines of evidence of ORGANISED Transportation systems. Oga , sorry, but not satisfactory answer.

Ps: 1. Consult map and you shall quickly realise your mistake on last sentence.
2. The bridges you speak of are Roads projects, not water transport projects.different.

2 Questions?
1.With Lagos being a coastal city and having a Lagoon, why dont the authorities plan for expanded water transport? Surely people can move or even commute daily over water .
2. Related to no 1. Why doesnt the federal govt plan for nationwide water transport? I was recently studying the dynamics of water transport systems in Nigeria and its is very easy to traverse Lagos to almost Lokoja in central Nigeria via water. For instance, why should i travel overland from Lagos to Calabar or even Onitsha? (The report poses this question).

Lagos is the Pride of Africa!!.

Comparing lagos to New York,Yes!! am doing that!!

GDP

The Gdp of Lagos is $100 billion
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/11/lagos-emerged-fifth-largest-economy-africa/

The Gdp of New York is $1 trillion
http://www.deptofnumbers.com/gdp/new-york/

Meaning New York is only 10 times better than Lagos at least Economically

Age

Newyork:
Newyork was founded in 1624!!,
Manhattan was bought by the Dutch from the native Indians in 1662.That leaves the age of Newyork to around 400 years.

Lagos:
Lagos is just 50 years old!!

Economic Projections!!:

NewYork:
The current Gdp of New York in 2016 is roughly $1 trillion.

The Gdp of NewYork in 2006 was $1 trillion (11 years ago).

The GDp of New York in 1998 was $700 billion.(If you calculate inflation and convert it to today's money its still $1 trillion).

My point is that New York is not growing!!.

Lagos:
The current Gdp of Lagos is $1 trillion

The Gdp of lagos doubles every 2.5 years (very Conservative estimate).

Again,
If you do the Math in less than a decade!, Lagos might catch up with NewYork Economically!!

Why won't any sane person be proud of such a wonderful State!!.

Lagos is the pride of the black race
OMG!!!!!!¡
Why is no one challenging this guy?!!!
You did a very poor google search and lifted figures from the site of a new york city public authority. You would have buttressed your point if you would have shown there was no year on year growth. I think if i was to believe your figures, a growth from 700 bn$ to 1 trn $ is still growth. Again use the term Gross State Product(GSP).
You make a stupido claim that Lagos GSP DOUBLES every 2.5 years! Every 2.5 years!!!! Liar!

Let me teach YOU Math. If we were to take growth as compounded growth year on year to calculate the length of time it takes an economy to grow(and indeed this is what economists use), then that would mean that Lagos GSP growth is 31.9 % . We all know this is false!!! It would have been all over global financial news . You just plucked figures from the sky, and now you're going around chest thumping them. Someone earlier in this same thread showed how reported growth by Abuja is trashed by sound economic analysis based on the actual(read black market rate). In other words , a country with a weak currency that wildly fluctuates cannot possibly claim to be.able to calculate any economic matric with accuracy. I pray for the naira though, am not happy at the way african currencies are always at the mercy of stronger ones. Oga, speaking loudly doesn't make you right, it just makes you loud.
Likewise your claim that NY GSP increased from 700 bn to 1 trn , using the same formula gives us a annual GDP growth rate of 28% for NY city. Again a lie!! This would certainly been all over CNN, coz as we all know NY city is the financial capital of the world. In fact year on year growth rarely exceeds 2%, even 5 year growth rates are still in single digit percentages. ( http://www.deptofnumbers.com/gdp/new-york/)
https://www.statista.com/statistics/183815/gdp-of-the-new-york-metro-area/
