@Poster, Let me just say it this way. A nightmare of mine as a kid growing up in Nigeria had been. . . falling into a hole/finding myself trapped in a hole/underground, and having to depend on the Nigerian Government/people for rescue . . . aaaarrrggghhhhh!!!
I just thought about what you said and I am saying a little prayer for all the Nigerians that have died in holes that we did not know about. In the north, east, west everywhere in Nigeria.

PoliticsI Applaud Chilean Government Efforts On Miners - Can This Happen In Nigeria? by mubaraqqq(op): 1:54am On Oct 13, 2010
SAN JOSE MINE, Chile (AP) — A drilling rig punched through to the underground purgatory where 33 miners have been trapped for 66 agonizing days under the Chilean desert, raising cheers, tears and hopes on Saturday.

Champagne sprayed and hard hats tumbled off heads as rescue workers pressed close to the drill, hugging each other and shouting for joy. Down in "Camp Hope," where the miners' relatives waited, people waved flags and cried as one man energetically rang a brass bell even before the siren sounded confirming the escape shaft had reached the miners.

The men are still several days away from efforts to bring them to the surface: the rescue team wants to eliminate even a remote chance of something going wrong on their way up, and plans to carefully inspect the shaft with a video camera before deciding whether to reinforce it.

Relatives waiting at "Camp Hope" on the surface waved Chilean flags and shouted with joy as word spread of the breakthrough, and one man frantically rang a bell even before a siren sounded to officially confirm that the escape shaft had reached the miners. They are still several days away from rescue: Engineers must first check the shaft and decide whether to reinforce it before pulling them to the surface.

"We feel an enormous happiness, now that i'm going to have my brother," said Darwin Contreras, whose brother Pedro, a 26-year-old heavy machine operator, is stuck down below. "When the siren rang out, it was overwhelming. Now we just have to wait for them to get out, just a little bit longer now."

The "Plan B" drill won a three-way race against two other drills to carve a hole wide enough for an escape capsule to pull the miners out one by one.

While "Plan A" and "Plan C" stalled after repeatedly veering off course, the "Plan B" drill reached the miners at a point 2,041 feet (622 meters) below the surface at 8:05 a.m., after 33 days of drilling.

Jeff Hart of Denver, Colorado, operated the drill, and said the entire rescue crew erupted with cheers when the T130 broke through.

"There is nothing more important than saving, possibly saving 33 lives. There's no more important job than that," Hart said. "We've done our part, now it's up to them to get the rest of the way out."

The milestone thrilled Chileans, who have come to see the rescue drama as a test of the nation's character and pride, and eased some anxiety among the miners' families.

But now comes a difficult judgment call: The rescue team must decide whether it's more risky to pull the miners through unreinforced rock, or to insert tons of heavy steel pipe into the curved shaft to protect the miners on their way up.

"This is an important achievement," Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said, "but we still haven't rescued anybody. This rescue won't be over until the last person below leaves this mine."

President Sebastian Pinera promised "to do everything humanly possible" to keep the miners safe, and as the drill was nearing the breakthrough, he said he had kept his promise.

Those in charge of the rescue say the decision on how to proceed next will be a purely technical one.

While engineers have said there is only a remote chance of something going wrong, everyone involved knows how terrible it would be — politically as well as for the families — if a miner gets stuck partway up for reasons that might have been avoided.

Steel pipe would prevent stones from falling and potentially jamming the capsule, but it wouldn't save a miner if the unstable mine suffers another major collapse, and might itself provoke a disastrous setback, Golborne said.

"You would have to put though a 600-meter hole a lot of pipes that weigh more than 150 tons," he warned. "And this structure can be set in a position that also could block the movement of the Phoenix (escape capsule). It's not an decision easy to make."

If Saturday's close video examination persuades engineers that the shaft is smooth, strong and uniform enough to let the capsule pass without significant obstacles, then rescuers plan to start pulling the men out one by one as early as Tuesday, in a made-for-TV spectacle that has captivated the world.

The miners will be initially examined at a field hospital where they can briefly reunited with up to three close relatives. Then, they'll be flown by helicopter in small groups to the regional hospital in Copiapo, where 33 fresh beds await and they will be observed for at least 48 hours. Only after their physical and mental health is thoroughly examined will they be allowed to go home.

"I'm very excited, very happy," said Guadalupe Alfaro, waving a flag outside her tent. Her son Carlos Bugueno, 26, is stuck down below. "I'm very excited, very content. I've wanted so long for this moment, I woke up to live this moment. My son will return soon."

"Our nervousness is gone now," said Juan Sanchez, whose son Jimmy is stuck in the mine. "Only now can we begin to smile."

I don't understand why people always make it  a religion issue. This is what they want you to believe. The last time that this happened, people in Jos said a fake army was deployed and used to kill more people.  In order for a fake army to be deployed that takes money, training and power. Which tells you that someone powerful is behind this. This is purely political and  nothing more.

And like someone else has said before, what happened to the previous perpetrators? Nothing, they were not punished, arrested, so of course when someone pays them little money to  do this again they will gladly go, because nothing will happen to them. There is no law,  I promise you that if the  government catches  the perpetrators and puts them in front of a firing squad, this will not be happening the next time.

For all those that keeps screaming divide Nigeria. First of all , someone explain to me how it will make the east better?  Will it suddenly make the corrupt governors fix their roads, provide jobs? Is that the magic bullet to solve the East's problem. Please tell me what will be different?

Secondly, have you looked at the map of Nigeria, we are all surrounded by Hausa states ( which was done on purpose). So how exactly will you divide Nigeria?

beejaei:
Interesting question. I don't believe there is one answer. These are some likely answers:

1. Nigerians do not love the country enough to die for it: Since I have come here, I have seen the fierce patriotism and Nationalism of Americans and noted the differences from Nigeria. It is the love for the USA that makes majority of Americans suspicious of government and willing to die for the ideals the country espouses. It is a kind of romantic relationship with the country. Their history, their war against Britain, their ups and downs from the past, all of these come together to make the country look like a lover to an American. This kind of love for one's country is not present in most Nigerians. Nigerians do not usually ask what they can do for their country, instead what their country can do for them. If their country cannot do it for them, they find a way to get it done, instead of fighting to make their country able to do it for them.

2. Nigerians are not united against "the government" as a foe: Where one man is complaining about lack of job, another is using his connections to corruptly get contract from the government. Another is feeding off his local government chairman by being a political thug. Another is thinking, "I just have to get out of this goddamn country." Another is like, "whatever." In essence, Nigerians have not been pushed to the point where nothing matters but to drive out the politicians from the country.

3. The Nigerian Factor: If a revolution is to start today, there will be many who will doubt it because they can never be sure. In Nigeria, seeing is not believing. Back in the days in OAU, whenever it was time to protest one school policy or the other, you will find those who will run to Lagos, hide in their rooms, or just show general indifference. Some are scared of getting expelled. Some believe that-and it once happened-some of the student leaders make deals with the school authority that the students do not know about. So this leaves them thinking, "Why should I risk my life for something that may just be empty?" Take a look at Femi Fani-Kayode. Did he not use to be an anti-Abacha guy before he came to join OBJ? Those kind of characters and Nigeria's history of these kind of political betrayals make it hard to want to join any sort of revolution. To put it simply, many Nigerians are not sure that the guy next in line to them during a revolution is not the one that will pull the trigger for their death.

Is amazing how the president and half his handlers that studied abroad think that the presidency is their birth right. Not one person in this group is thinking about the Nigerian people they are suppose to be serving. All they are thinking about is keeping power.

I am just trying to understand the thinking/mindset of African leaders. Are they too far gone to realize that a president cannot be absent for 45 days without giving an explanation to the country. Is just baffling, that they think this is OK.

I swear the African mentality is just stupid. They never attack the people that is suppressing or suffering them. Just cowards attacking the easiest , most vulnerable target that has nothing to do with their suffering.

What has these Togolese players got to do with the Angola govt that is suffering you . This is just like MEND kidnapping white people and blowing up refineries, while their governors are busy stealing money. Or like the Africans in Italy protesting and rioting for their rights in Italy, but they won't do the same thing in their African countries.

I just hope South Africa steps up their game, because if something like this happens in SA, Africa can forget world cup ever coming back to Africa .
PoliticsNigerian Senate Withdraws The United States Ultimatum by mubaraqqq(op): 5:28am On Jan 08, 2010
THE Federal Government indicated, on Thursday, that it was no longer pursuing its ultimatum against the United States of America over the inclusion of Nigeria on the terror list, saying it had opted for “friendly resolution.”

The Senate, in the wake of America’s inclusion of Nigeria on the controversial list, issued a seven-day ultimatum on Tuesday for a reversal or diplomatic row will ensue.

Nigeria got into the infamous list as a result of the failed attempt by a Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, to blow up a US airliner in a suicide mission.

Addressing a world press conference on Thursday in his office in Abuja, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, disclosed that Nigeria opted for diplomacy to resolve the issue amicably rather than confronting America over the issue.

The US released the names of 14 countries on its terror watch list on Monday, which included Nigeria.

The minister also disclosed that government was still ignorant of the consequences of the watch list on Nigerians travelling abroad, saying that the Minister of Foreign Affairs had been directed to find out what the action meant.

While explaining that the list did not translate into Nigeria being labelled a terrorist country, he said it was merely meant to keep a watch on the country due to the Abdulmutallab issue.

Aondoakaa added that some countries on the list were allies of America, giving Saudi Arabia as an example.

According to him: “We are not against the Senate’s decision, but we cannot be talking about ultimatum at this stage. We want to see how we can resolve the issue amicably. We will invite our colleagues in the US to look into Abdulmutallab’s matter. We have visuals of how the boy left the country. He was thoroughly checked at the airport before he left the country. He first moved to the right of the checking room, then suddenly changed his mind for reasons known to him and moved left, where he was thoroughly checked. He removed his belt and shoes before he was checked in.

“We will invite security agencies in the country to watch the visuals. Nigeria has had a very good relationship with the US. I am sure by the time we place all these facts before them, they will rescind their decision.

“Since this incident happened, we have assured the US of our cooperation. We don’t know the implications of their action yet, but the Foreign Affairs Minister has been directed to find out the actual action the US will take by placing Nigeria on terror watch list. It is in our own interest to resolve the matter.

“Our consulate in the US made contact with the boy with the permission of the US government. He is a suspect in the US and he will be dealt with according to the laws of the US.”

Aondoakaa stated that apart from constant communication with his counterpart in the United States, government was also ready to invite American security agencies to watch the visuals of Abdulmutallab’s movement when he was leaving Nigeria.

The minister also let the gathering into the bills being sponsored by the government to combat terrorism, disclosing that religious crises were listed in the proposed laws as terrorism.

He further said that all issues that posed danger to Nigerians’ lives like hostage-taking would be covered by the proposed laws.

He said it was pertinent to note that there were about 16 United Nations and African Union instruments on counter-terrorism, “all dealing with related issues ranging from money laundering, drug trafficking, crime to nuclear terrorism.”

He added that, “it is noteworthy that Nigeria has been able to sign and ratify nine of these. Nigeria is also considered to be in good compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373 of 2001, 1455 (2003), 1526 (2004) and 1822 (2008) on issues related to counter terrorism.”

He said in compliance with the provisions of the international instruments of counter-terrorism, Nigeria had fulfilled the requirement to establish a focal point.

“The national focal point for Nigeria is co-ordinated by the Department of State Service (DSS) with membership comprising well over 30 national agencies. As a demonstration of our determination to combat terrorism, the Nigerian government, in October 2008, completed the drafting of the Prevention of Terrorism Bill with the help of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee. The bill which is now before the National Assembly seeks to criminalise and punish all acts of terrorism, terrorists and their associates.

“The bill clearly defines and prohibits all acts of terrorism and its support. It makes violation of the provision of the bill an offence and prescribes penalties for such violations. The bill further makes provisions for listing and delisting, freezing of funds and financial assets of terrorists and terrorist groups and prevention of their entry into or transit in Nigeria.”

The terror act by the bomber is a continuation of the terror act by a section of nigeria on human life. This pictures below tell you the story, how many Yorubas that have been killed so far by this network of terrorist who live in Nigeria.

The impact of the USA listing on Nigeria have little or no effect on this people because less than 10% of them ever travel abroad. The bulk of visitor to the USA are yorubas, who trader and have other interest in the USA. The economy effect is into the couple of billion of dollar to the lifes of our people. This is what they our terrors want. They want to kill the Yoruba economy. They have shut down several banks in Nigeria. And have destroy people business.

This is who they are. And instead of the USA looking toward Yeman, they should look into our history and see , there are terrorist in Nigeria. And they have cause terror to the lifes of the Yoruba people.

The honest truth is it is just a continuation of the terror on the lifes of the Yorubas, and economy impact to thier lifes if the USA and other nation do not grant us special status. We may all live in the same country with this terrorist. But we are not the same.

Our believes and ideas are different. They are terrorist we are not, and we should not have to suffer for their act of terror to the USA. They should suffer for it. And not us. We want a special status to identify us as been different from this people. Why should we carry the same passport with terrorist.?

It's because of the act of this terrorist that many Yorubas now live in the USA and many countries. And honestly, they have destroy our people ways of life. We want do not want to be classified the same way as them.

I would say the USA and other nation have just seen a tip of the ice of what they are capable of doing and what they have done to the millions of lifes of the Yorubas.

We want a special status to identify us as been different from this people. Why should we carry the same passport with terrorist.?
They do not value human life.
