Just like yesterday its been long i updated this thread. will be giving updates on how the cukes are doing. probably tomorrow. Meanwhile, let me just share benefits of eating cucumber. 9 Reasons to Eat Cucumbers 1. Protect Your Brain Cucumbers contain an anti- inflammatory flavonol called fisetin that appears to play an important role in brain health. In addition to improving your memory and protecting your nerve cells from age-related decline, fisetin has been found to prevent progressive memory and learning impairments in mice with Alzheimer's disease. 2. Reduce Your Risk of Cancer Cucumbers contain polyphenols called lignans (pinoresinol, lariciresinol, and secoisolariciresinol), which may help to lower your risk of breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancers. They also contain phytonutrients called cucurbitacins, which also have anti- cancer properties. According to the George Mateljan Foundation: "Scientists have already determined that several different signaling pathways (for example, the JAK-STAT and MAPK pathways) required for cancer cell development and survival can be blocked by activity of cucurbitacins." 3. Fight Inflammation Cucumbers may help to "cool" the inflammatory response in your body, and animal studies suggest that cucumber extract helps reduce unwanted inflammation, in part by inhibiting the activity of pro- inflammatory enzymes (including cyclo-oxygenase 2, or COX-2). 4. Antioxidant Properties Cucumbers contain numerous antioxidants, including the well-known vitamin C and beta-carotene. They also contain antioxidant flavonoids, such as quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, and kaempferol, which provide additional benefits. For instance, quercetin is an antioxidant that many believe prevents histamine release—making quercetin- rich foods "natural antihistamines." Kaempferol, meanwhile, may help fight cancer and lower your risk of chronic diseases including heart disease. 5. Freshen Your Breath Placing a cucumber slice on the roof of your mouth may help to rid your mouth of odor-causing bacteria. According to the principles of Ayurveda, eating cucumbers may also help to release excess heat in your stomach, which is said to be a primary cause of bad breath. 6. Manage Stress Cucumbers contain multiple B vitamins, including vitamin B1, vitamin B5, and vitamin B7 (biotin). B vitamins are known to help ease feelings of anxiety and buffer some of the damaging effects of stress. 7. Support Your Digestive Health Cucumbers are rich in two of the most basic elements needed for healthy digestion: water and fiber. Adding cucumbers to your juice or salad can help you meet the ideal of amount of fiber your body needs — 50 grams per 1,000 calories consumed. If you struggle with acid reflux, you should know that drinking water can help suppress acute symptoms of acid reflux by temporarily raising stomach pH; it's possible that water-rich cucumbers may have a similar effect. Cucumber skins contain insoluble fiber, which helps add bulk to your stool. This helps food to move through your digestive tract more quickly for healthy elimination. 8. Maintain a Healthy Weight Cucumbers are very low in calories, yet they make a filling snack (one cup of sliced cucumber contains just 16 calories). The soluble fiber in cucumbers dissolves into a gel-like texture in your gut, helping to slow down your digestion. This helps you to feel full longer and is one reason why fiber-rich foods may help with weight control. 9. Support Heart Health Cucumbers contain potassium , which is associated with lower blood pressure levels. A proper balance of potassium both inside and outside your cells is crucial for your body to function properly. As an electrolyte, potassium is a positive charged ion that must maintain a certain concentration (about 30 times higher inside than outside your cells) in order to carry out its functions, which includes interacting with sodium to help control nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and heart function. |
markemmi:thanks bro. actually i do make organic fertilizer for my vegetable farms with resources from the farm. |
ishaqteejay:Wow thanks@ishaqteejay borrowed a leaf from your thread. yes i have applied the pesticides and fungicides. NPK was mixed with UREA fertilizer in the ratio 5:1. then one tea spoon per sack. |

Pavore9:I will say not that encouraging. Though shoprite is doing there best do bring unfamiliar veggies closer to the owerri people. |
Pavore9:yea. for sure. |
Pavore9:I did planted them in small sack, but out door. I think indoors should be the best. then after some weeks transplant out door. the nursery stage is 6-8weeks. they are 21days now. still monitoring and observing. Seedling centre that will be a welcomed idea. lts been challenging getting improved seedlings here in Owerri. |
Pavore9:wow that will be wonderful. i got few seeds and broadcasted.just four came up.and they are trying now just few weeks old.Though struggling, not even up to an inch in height. |
Pavore9:Honestly speaking .x2 or 3 of profit during the normal season. From experience almost all plants do well in dry season as far as water is available.because they produce their food with sunlight and water made available. |
Nawa o. An opportunity in Agric is opportunity to become fulfilled in life. well individual diff plays here. Am a chemist practicing Agriculture and am satified. |

Today 13/10/16 our (999)variety is 20days old. so far NPK was applied yesterday. one table spoon for each sack. Ishaqteejay et al.A close look will show you how i did my trellis construction for staking of the vines. after digging a hole to fix the bamboo which is serving as a pole, then use a thread make horizontal binding of one pole to another. then followed by a vertical binding of the strings to form a.net like frame. tie at each end and make it strong to avoid sagging when your plants starts producing fruits. As, for irrigation am not using water from my fish farm. now am using a liquid fertilizer made with resources from the farm.Beauty of Agricuture.

Turks:There are many diseases of poultry. But the problem with some farmers is how to identify the signs and symptoms for treatment. the mainthing. maintain a good hygiene for the birds.and do not miss dia vaccination programmes. |
giftiy:for headache, paracetamol, panadol, boska, sudrex etc.are all good to relief headache. my point is this amprocox is not the only drug for treatment of coccidiosis, rather one of the best so far. The issue is op was thinking of vitamins.I adviced him not to.especially vitamin B1. it provides more site for the spread of coccidiosis. |
op. u need buhari in ur life. the poster above me is reluctant to tell u dat. due to EFCC. |
ok. good evening my people. due to series of calls and chats concerning how i stake my cukes. i will be uploading pics from my last batch of cukes for now.(999)precisely. In the earlier post i used darina variety, and poultry dungs and water from my fish farm was the only source of nutrient in the darina. Now, in this (999) i am using NPK 15:15:15 mixed with urea fertilizer. I am trying to compare and contrast for up scale production. |
lanre2009:Thanks. |
Turks:Good. you know deep about poultry. The main anticoccidal drug is amprolium. never ever combine it with vitamin b1. @op when ever u want to administer any drug ora vaccine.please follow the instruction written on the sachet or bottle.before u cause damage ok. |
[quote author=Boost4agro post=50084131]i'm inspired by all these stories, but can someone help me my cucumber plants are about 7 days and i think they are doing well, but about 2 days ago, i noticed that some just die suddenly as if something is cutting them just above the top soil. They suddenly wither, pls i need urgent help. I planted the marketer. [/quote ok what we have here is not just story like most online farmers.I am a farmer bro. To your problem, i noticed such in my last batch planted last month when i refused to wet their soil for some days. I also noticed under 14days old, their roots are still at the top.so wet your young cukes twice a day. again lizard do destroy or break the stem of the young vines.Lizards are big problem to cucumber and water melon. soon i will put up a research on how to keep them off. thanks and please do not be discouraged. |
adescopy:sorry for late reply.too busy in my poultry plus other farm works. Any good hybrid seed can serve. I used darina.from seminis(company) . just 10g satchet is ok.for the 200sacks. here in owerri its #950. I dont know for your location. check around. |
adescopy:getting soil shouldnt be tha difficult check any wia in your vicinity and spot areas wia grasses grow often and healthy. mark out a portion uproot the grasses from the root. then clear and gather the soil dia.both the topsoil and the second layer. get 15 wheelbarrows of the soil and mix with 7bags of ur manure..then fill in the mixture into ur sacks. arrange and plant. make sure u wash the empty cement bags before use. u should have upto 200sacks from that. go to block industries, they do sale 10naira per sack(empty cement bags). |
mumamanda4:ok.@35 my darina is already having fruits.urs @35 and is weathering, it should be flowering and priducing fruit by now. at least flowering. pls make sure u irrigat everyday . and i hope ur soil is not getting soaked for long without the water getting drained down the soil. make sure the sack is perforated.and when u applied the NPK i hope u didnt allow it to touch stem of the vines. because if it touched and u didnt irrigate properly it may burn down the plants. thanks dont hope on rain water. irrigate everyday.dat one u are sure of. |
mumamanda4:ok.so which fertlizer did u made use of? and how do u irrigate? |
mumamanda4:sorry please dont loose hope agriculture is the risk and succeed profession. how did u planted. which agronomy did you use?.sack farming or on bare ground? do u irrigate and how do u do it? |
adescopy:no. just the poultry dungs only.use 7bags of poultry to mix your soil. then fill the soil with four shovels per sack of the mixture. |
am in owerri. how i can i get one. |
adescopy:thanks. marketing will never be an issue depending on your location.the market women are ready to buy. though my farm was for experiment. the fruits were awesome very green and fresh. though small number because i only harvested the giant ones .every 5days. so i 22@ 1000 to a nearby fruit seller. and she was all smiles because on delivery we noticed d ones she has are dry and non appealing. so i noticed the attraction is make sure ur cukes are very green. because cukes are vegetables also. |
