The police in Niger State have arrested a 37-year-old Islamic teacher (name withheld) in Katcha Local Government Area of the state for allegedly stealing eight motorcycles. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Niger State Command, Mr. Richard Oguche, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in an interview with our correspondent in Minna, Niger State capital, on Sunday. He said that the suspect was one of the over 75 suspects arrested at various locations in the state in recent raids of criminal spots embarked upon by the police. According to the PPRO, during the raids, 18 motorcycles were recovered, out of which eight were stolen by the Islamic teacher. He disclosed that the suspect had, during interrogation, confessed to the police that he commited the crime, adding that he would soon be charged to court. He said further that among the 75 suspects was a house breaking and theft specialist, who stole items worth several thousands of naira from the house of a pastor in Bida while the pastor was in church. He urged criminals to desist from their nefarious activities while assuring the people of the state of the determination of the police in ensuring safety of lives and properties at all times. Oguche attributed the feat achieved by the police in crime combat and control to the high level of patronage of community policing in the state. He urged the people to always give reasonable and reliable information promptly to the police as this would assist the police in the onerous task of crime fighting. |
A Lagos-based lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, has urged a non-governmental organisation, the Africa for Obama 08, to desist from raising fund for the United States Democratic Party presidential candidate, Mr. Barrack Obama. The call came just as the organisers said that the fund realised from the event slated for Monday (today), would not be paid into the Obama campaign account, but used to mobilise Africans in the Diaspora to vote for the Democratic candidate. In a statement made available to our correspondents in Lagos on Sunday, Falana insisted that the fund-raising was illegal and contrary to the US law that forbids any external funding. He said, “ An organisation called “Africa for Obama ‘08” led by Prof. Okereke-Onyiuke was established in Nigeria to mobilise support for Obama. In the Thursday, August 7, 2008 edition of THISDAY Newspaper, the organisation invited Nigerians to a fund raising Dinner/Concert at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos on Monday August 11, 2008. “According to the said advertisement, tickets for the dinner/concert will be sold from amounts ranging from N275, 000 per individual to N2.5m per corporate body. The funds raised at the dinner/concert will be contributed to the Barrack Obama Campaign Fund contrary to the Electoral Law of the United States of America, which forbids any form of external financing of political campaigns. “In view of the clear provisions of the US’ law on external funding of political campaigns, the “ Africa for Obama ’08” should be restrained from raising funds for Obama’s campaign. Otherwise, Obama is surely going to be scandalised by a powerful section of the US media controlled by the Republican Party.” The law - Foreign Agents Registration Act - was first enacted in 1966 and incorporated into the Federal Election Commission in 1974 as, The Federal Election Campaign Act. The FECA prohibits any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly. It is also unlawful to help foreign nationals violate that ban or to solicit, receive or accept contributions or donations from them. Persons who, knowingly and willfully, engage in these activities may be subject to fines and/or imprisonment. But the Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs, Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mr. Sola Oni, who spoke on behalf of Onyiuke, faulted Falana’s stance, saying that the group was aware of the US law on funding of political campaigns. He added that money realised from the dinner would also be used to sponsor Nigerians (who share the Obama dream) to the US to witness the Democratic Party’s convention. Obama is expected to pick the ticket during the convention which comes up this month. According to him, they are raising the fund from those who share the dream of Obama and are not forcing anybody to be part of the project. “The fund is not going into Obama’s campaign account, as American law is against it”. He also said that the organisers were interested in Obama’s victory at the polls and intend to lobby him to make his foreign policy to favour Nigeria if he wins. |

Lagosians chide pastors over self-advertisement Some Nigerians have kicked against the use of posters by religious leaders to advertise themselves. A cross-section of Lagos residents interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria expressed disgust at the trend, saying it was only meant to boost the personal ego of the clerics indulging in the practice. The Archbishop of Lagos Mainland, Anglican Communion, Bishop Adebayo Akinde, described the trend as selfish. Akinde urged clerics to live exemplary lives. “Christian leaders should remember that God requires of us holiness, righteousness, integrity and honesty. “The Bible warns against materialism. The life of a man does not consist in the abundance of his possession,” he said. In his reaction, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, also frowned at the trend. According to Osu, most pastors of new generation churches live in opulence and preach that God is not the God of the poor. “Most of the new generation churches now harp on miracles and prosperity without backing it up with sincere Word of God,” he told NAN. In her contribution, Madam Caroline Onwuta, a teacher, claimed that the new generation churches were confusing their flocks with their teaching. “The Pentecostal churches are not versatile with the word of God, as they are fond of turning the word of God upside down to suit their purposes. “They compete among themselves rather than emulate the orthodox churches which avoid materialism and help to instill sanity in the society,” Onwuta said. She condemned the use of posters by Pentecostal church leaders to project themselves. Mr. Biola Adeboye, a trader, is not happy that pastors of new generation churches advertise themselves and their wives, as well as show off their suits. “They look well fed in their costly attires while their flocks look hungry. Their posters deface the streets, the walls and bridges in the city,” he said. Adeboye called on the government to ban religious leaders from defacing the streets with their posters. “People should not be sentimental about this. There must be some sanity,” he said. However, Pastor Joseph Ojo, General Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, said that there was nothing bad in the use of posters by religious leaders. He saw nothing wrong in a poster having the photographs of the pastor and his wife. He said if either of them was called by God, they must work together. (NAN) |
