ROSENBORG LOSE ONE, HULL GAIN ONE Our first two opponents in non-Barclays Premier League games this season have announced news in the last 24 hours that will change their likely line-ups for the matches. Rosenborg, our first opponents in the Champions League on Tuesday 18 September have lost 20-year-old striker Michael Kleppe Jamtfall, ruled out for up to eight months with a knee injury. The Norwegian youth international played in two of his club's Champions League qualifiers. Hull City, who we play away in the Carling Cup on Wednesday 26 September, yesterday signed former Nigeria international Jay-Jay Okocha (pictured) on a one-year deal. The 34-year-old midfielder, who had been plying his trade in Qatar, played at Bolton between 2002-2006 and was in their team the day we won the League at the Reebok Stadium in April 2005. Tickets for the Rosenborg game are on sale this week. For full ticket information and online booking, visit Ticket News.

i laff at uPAT NEVIN: VILLA PARK IN PERSPECTIVE Barclays Premier League Pos Team Pts In this week's column, Pat casts an ex-professional's eye over the first defeat of the season and sees no reason for major concern. 3 Everton 10 4 Chelsea 10 5 Man City 9 Full League Table The last thing you want at a football club after a win is an international break to halt your momentum. Unfortunately it doesn't work the other way around when you have had a negative result. Next Match Chelsea Football Club Blackburn Rovers Football Club After a defeat, players want to rectify the situation as soon as possible and that is what Chelsea would have wanted after Sunday's match at Villa Park. Stamford Bridge 15/09/2007 17:15 Blackburn at home in 11 days is now a frustratingly long time to wait, but they will have to. It is worth looking at the positives; such as they were, in the defeat. Last Match Aston Villa Football Club Chelsea Football Club Two players managed to get their debuts out of the way and there is little doubt that both Alex and Juliano Belletti will be important squad members during the coming season after both completing a steady 90 minutes with their new team mates. 2 0 02/09/2007 16:00 After losing the soft goal at a corner, José Mourinho was once again quick to go into ultra attacking mode. Having five forwards in Drogba, Kalou, Pizarro, Joe Cole and Florent Malouda on the park for the last half hour, it led to that entire period being played almost exclusively in the home side's half of the pitch. Match Report TableNext MatchLast Match Maybe Chelsea were just too frenetic with their play, and slightly less measured than they should have been, knowing that Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal had all previously picked up full points over the weekend. There were however ten men in claret and blue behind the ball almost permanently in that last third of the game, a situation that is never easy to break down. QUICKLINKS Countless corners and huge periods of possession made little difference as it proved impossible to create many meaningful chances. With the cushion of a goal and then a cause to fight for, Villa played as if their lives depended upon it. Let's hope they will do the same when the other title contenders come calling. Tickets Fixtures The most common reaction to this situation is to eventually punt high balls forward into the general area of the penalty box, but that is one area where Aston Villa are particularly strong. Chelsea tried not to fall into that trap and the introduction of Joe Cole in particular was aimed at making use of any little gaps that might open up as the Brummies tired. Megastore Tv Online There was no lack of effort and certainly every tactical angle was attempted, but sometimes you have just got to accept that it isn't going to be your day. Every team knows that tortuous feeling and most teams usually have an opponent who becomes a 'bogey' for them. Chelsea Betting Tours It feels as though The Villa are that team for Chelsea in that they are developing an infuriatingly regular habit of frustrating us. RANDOM LINKS When Chelsea eventually left John Terry up front, the chance of losing another goal from a rare break was always going to be a danger. The important thing from now on is that Chelsea have to get out of the habit of losing goals first, then having to go and chase the game. The team that wins the Premier League this time will have to go at it 100 per cent right from the start of matches because the league has more teams who are stronger this year than it has had for a long time. The Premier League also has quite a few managers who have the tactical nous to identify the opposition's major threats and know how to close a game out. Martin O'Neill had been doing this for years with Glasgow Celtic, particularly in European competition, so he has to be applauded for managing to get away with a 2-0 win, even when there was a long period when his team only had around 18 per cent of the possession. One thing is for sure, with that amount of ball, Chelsea will not lose many of these types of games, and so it is certainly not time for panic yet. |
