The new Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barrister Chris. Green has told KICK OFF that nothing untoward will happen when Sharks and Dolphins come against each other in the second semifinal of the FA Cup on Sunday. Sharks and Dolphins are sponsored by the Rivers State government and issues have been raised in the media on the possibility of the match being decided in the board room and not on the pitch but Green insist there will be no such thing. "This is a football competition and not a friendly game and every team must put in everything to make sure they win and both sides will want to come out and win," Green told KICK OFF. "It will all be to the credit of football and to the credit of the Rivers State governor that Rivers State is the haven of football in the country when the record books show that one state has two clubs in the FA Cup semifinals. "We expect an atmosphere where the players of both side exhibit their skill and give fans the best of football that no one will regret going to Owerri to watch the match." In 2005 Sharks and Dolphins met in the FA Cup final with the final result leading observers to believe there was an accord in place. In the two legged affair, Dolphins, then playing in the CAF Confederation Cup lost home and away to Sharks; 1-0 at their Liberation Stadium home ground and 2-0 at the Sharks Stadium. No side admitted there was a sell out in place but rumours abound then that there was an executive order from the Rivers State government to Dolphins to lose to Sharks in that quarterfinal match. Sharks went on to lose their semi final tie against Enyimba and then the third place match against Iwuanyanwu Nationale. |
