OK Prof, thanks for the guidance, I am grateful for your work, Thank so much.
wip7:

Good day,

I can understand what you are going through. In a normal sense, the reputable open-access publishers should generally don't publish accepted manuscripts unless they receive the APC. For them to have published it without following that well-known or established step, means they are more of a predatory journal.

First, as I have earlier warned against publishing in this journal and my reasons are:

------I never for once pay to publish any research work (it makes no economic sense to me); rather I get paid by my university and government for publishing my hard labored results. ......You should avoid paying to publish even is 1$.

--------I don't publish in low-quality journals; I am a well-respected scientist so I don't allow low-quality and predatory journals tarnish my profile or dent my research work..........avoid such journal as wells; hence, consider doing quality work to get it published in high-quality journals.

---- I don't publish in journals without verifiable metrics; this particular journal has no impact factor and not in any well-known reputable database; so desist from such.

Because; they seem to share the APC with the editor that handled and other production teams; hence, they need your money rather than the quality of your work. In most cases: the papers published in these types of predatory journals often tend to provide false and/or invented data based on research that has never been conducted; however, readers are not always aware of this. You don't need them to market your published work; if your work is quality enough with citable data; other researchers will cite your work and you will get good citations.

Considering my interpretation: Bad debt list means a container of debtors for an expense that the business incurs and the payment is estimated to be uncollectible.

The implication is likely that you may be requested to pay for your upcoming APC before processing your manuscript in that journal and also tagged to repay the earlier debt before publishing with them. Meanwhile, this only affects this publisher. I will encourage you to never publish in this type of predatory (yahoo-yahoo) journals. Consider publishing you work in subscription top-quality journals from Elsevier, Taylors, and Springer, Willey than these low-quality predators.

No, it will never damage your academic career or reputation. You have not killed someone, engage in academic dishonesty, cheated someone, fabricated data, stolen research funds, or used false research outputs, etc. Those are what damages academic profiles not bad debts from yahoo-yahoo publishers.

Write to them, that you expected them to receive the APC before they publish your accepted manuscript, due to the current pandemic situation your university cannot avoid funding the APC. Refer to the fact that you have requested for a high discount, however, since no discount and they published your manuscript without waiting for the APC, you don't have money to pay or you will pay in the future if your situation improves. For the time being, let them know that if the APC will not let them market your published work, that you will market it yourself.

Nothing serious. If they threaten you ....you should also threaten them. They are not doing you a favor so why threat?

Good day Prof Wip 7, May God bless you for the wonderful job you are doing.

Sir, Please I need your advice and guidance regarding a recently published article of mine in a Journal of Environmental and Public Health (Hindawi Journal). The journal published the paper while we are in the process negotiations of the article publication fee, the fee final fee offered was $675, which we said we cannot afford at the moment due to non payment of salaries to Nigeria lecturers by the government. We made several request demanding for a reduction in the fee, but they refused.

As a matter of fact, Now they are threatening to put me in their bad debt list, if I didn't pay in the next 30 days. Which they said will prevent my paper for marketing promotion and further, will not allow me to submit paper to Hindawi Journals.

Please Sir,
1.what is bad debt list ?
2. What are the implications of entering a bad list in a journal, will that damage my academic career/reputation?
3. Please how do i recover from the bad debt list.

Please sir advice me on the way forward, what do I do now

Thank you

Thank you so much for the enlightment, it is clear now. Thank you
wip7:

First, I like to start by saying Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) are all databases.

ESCI: This is a newly established database currently managed by Clarivate Analytics and achirved in Web of Science. It was established in 2015 to cover newly commissioned journals. So, large percentage of journals covered by ESCI are new journals with no or low metrics. According to Clarivate, ESCI will cover "peer-reviewed publications, quality work and emerging scientific fields". Before ESCI was established, there are several less‐established journals that are not in WOS (web of science) and that often limits authors that publish in journals not indexed in WOS. So now Clarivate as ensured ESCI is part of WOS making less‐established journals or low-ranked journals to now be part of WOS.

Are the journals indexed under ESCI good?

Clarivate claims that the quality criteria and rigour of the ESCI are equivalent to those of its other products like SCI or SCIE or WOS. However, in view of the large number of titles that have been included in it in a short time in ESCI; it seems otherwise.

-----A research paper dedicated to this found that the visibility of the journals included in the ESCI is far lower than that of the classical indexes of WoS or of Scopus.

------ESCI has a higher percentage of open access journals
nearly one-third of the journals; meaning they charge you when you publish.

-----A total of nearly 20% of the journals covered by ESCI are not indexed by other international abstracting and indexing databases.

Internationally and in well-respected universities, industries, funding organizations and evaluators; paper published in Journals indexed under SCI, SCIE and achirved in WOS are taken to be valuable and thats how they rank or evaluate such person profile and worth for now. As an example, in 2013; there was a research associate job with 5000 euro monthly salary which was directed for a particular project supported by Marie-Curie Fellowships in Holland. After removing all unqualified applicants, there are 5 left which has similar number of papers, their research field fits well to the target, all have similar years of experience, the last criteria adopted was to rank them according to their outputs. The one that graduated from not-very known universities had highest papers under WOS and SCI/SCIE while the ones from well known universities had higher number of papers but not as much of these papers were selected as reputable; so those were dropped.

Nowl ESCI is under WOS but the journal’s index in this ESCI will not come with an impact factor(IF). However, each journal in this new index will be evaluated every year and those qualified will be transferred to SCIE.

In summary, the faith of the person that publishes in ESCI journal will be hanging on the speed and quality such journal will employ for its papers so it can be included in SCIE. Some journals are under ESCI and also have SCIE affliations so thats fine.

SCI was a smaller database that contained those valuable journals and to exapand it and allow more journals; Clarivate introduced SCI-E (expanded) which has larger coverage. Currently, all of those quality journals in SCI have been merged into SCIE.

SCI was the original or among very first notable database Created in 1964 and the quality or metrics of Journals in SCI is then measured by impact factor....so in many cases and in some corners, people that published in higher impact factors are praised or respected compared to lower impact factors journals (this has some baises anyway)”. ... While Scopus is also a database launched in 2004 and to rank or measure the quality of the journal, it introduces four types of quality measure which are: h-Index, CiteScore, SJR and SNIP.

All SCI/SCIE papers will be under SCOPUS but not all SCOPUS will be indexed in SCI/SCIE or even in WOS. All SCI/SCIE are in WOS but not all SCOPUS

In my university, You will be paid 1200$ if you publish in Journals indexed in Science Citation Index (SCI)/SCI Expanded (SCIE) while you will be paid 190$ if the journal is only indexed in Scopus.

So for me, I prefer that bigger money anyway......All SCI/SCIE and majority of Scopus journals have adhered to the strict manuscript evaluation process through the rigorous and blind-folded review by the well-experienced reviewers across the world. This increases the visibility of the research articles; unlike those fake and predatory journals.

I hope this helps to clear some stuffs!

Good day Prof. WIP

Please sir throw more light on ESCI: Emerging sources citation index, are those Journals good,
What is the faith of someone's article accepted by ESCI Journals. Also the SCIE, please differentiate it with the SCI.

Also what is different between Scopus indexed Journal and SCI journal...?

I can see some Journals being indexed by both the above two. More light Prof WIP

Securing admission in public universities in Turkey is highly competitive due to quota system, hence GRE or ALES are demanded to weight individual applicant apart from the high CGPA requirement (minimum 3/4.0, note, undergrad cgpa from 3.8/5.0 will be helpful)

If you don’t have GRE, kindly consider enrolling in private universities in Turkey.

Adsorption is based on surface property, the affinity of the adsorbent towards the adsorbate, then both physical and chemical characters of the potential adsorbent are necessary.

For agro-waste, the catch is that it can be subjected to valorization (value-added) and also serves as an emerging research area called bio-economy (becoming popular in Western Europe now) and cost implication.

Apart from the low-cost of the agro-based adsorbent, the potential adsorbent must have a high surface area, well-developed porosity (for trapping pollutant), environmentally friendly, easy to process, have useful functional groups that may be attractive for selective adsorption of pollutant. Can be regenerated and can stand high reuse cycles. You have to characterize such potential adsorbent before you can know its physicochemical characters.

Meanwhile, you can visit ScienceDirect for various agro-based used for adsorption. Attached is one sample review you can always find many.

Sir, what are the criterias to look at when choosing an adsorbent material for research, that is, How do we know that a particular material can be good adsorbent for water treatment (then to proposed it for a research), or might have the potential of adsorbing something.

Is there analysis or practical to carry out on the material to know.

Greetings Prof @Wip7 and everyone in this thread. Sir I must confessed that your contributions to this thread has been highly motivational and charging. I am a prospective MSc student (Forestry and Wood Science) as I have been admitted but resuming next year. Currently I am volunteering as an intern with my undergraduate supervisor because I am really interested in research. I will like to ask questions based on this but I will like to say it is not a PhD research work but BSc for one of my supervisor's student. He is working on a topic which looks similar to this. He is working on removal of heavy metal in contaminated water using 3 different species of sawdust. He is working on batch adsorption system and he is collecting real water waste. He is using AAS to detect the heavy metals and removing the predominant one. I am interested in the work and I will like to get your advise on the experimental procedures as I wish to contribute to the work and learn from it.

Thank you in advance sir
Good day Prof Wip7, the guidance and educative information you are offering on this platform is highly commendable. May God help you also. I am a prospective PhD student in Environmental Engineering, with research interest on Water supply and waste waste treatment. Hoping to study in Turkish universities. Please I will be happy if I can get some of your publushed articles on adsorption of water treatment using agro based materials to my mail: mohammedmusty88@gmail.com.

Thank you Professor

There are various heavy metals contamination that leads to poisoning and kidney problems including Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium and Mercury......Take note, the kidney is the first target organ of heavy metal toxicity. The extent of renal damage by heavy metals depends on the nature, the dose, route and duration of exposure.

So before you design any treatment technology, you must identify which heavy metal contained in the water, concentrations which will be compared with permitted limits/standard and possible routes/source of contamination.

To do that test, you will need to collect the water at different points and time ...if you have Water testing kits and skilled you can analyze the water or rather take the samples to lab using AAS to detect the dosage. Collecting the water at various spots or sources will likely help you to locate the route of the heavy metal. Ensure the water collection bottles are not contaminated before being used.

After analysis, then you can design either physical(adsorption) or biological (plant or organism) or hybrid treatment method in a small scale to evaluate the efficiency of the methods against the real and treated water samples.....then the effective method can be scaled up.....

That’s fantastic. I have worked on many agro wastes and I have enhanced their adsorptive capacity for various pollutants.

You can let me know which you are interested, which adsorption system (batch or column) you want to use, which pollutant you are considering, single or multiple pollutants, laboratory/simulated or real wastewater, how you intend to carry out the regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent, which kinetics, isotherm and thermo studies you are considering, will you be doing data optimization to enhance the parameters for industrial use? You are aware the adsorption is not a destructive tech so what happens to the spent adsorbents ?

You can reply here let people gain as well..
