Trouble brews in Jonathan’s camp •Plateau House, Wadata Plaza in silent war •The Anenih, Ahmadu Ali connection From Our reporter Friday, February 04, 2011 While still trying to pacify aggrieved aspirants and candidates who lost out in the power game in the party primaries, another crisis appears brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over leadership of the campaign team of President Goodluck Jonathan. The party is already pitched into camps over who should lead the campaign team, Daily Sun investigation revealed. The president had emerged as the party candidate at its national convention held at Eagle Square on January 13. The investigation revealed that either of two leading chieftains of the party – former chairman of the party, Dr. Ahmadu Ali and former chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Tony Anenih – have allegedly been earmarked to take over the leadership of the campaign exercise. But while President Goodluck Jonathan is favourably disposed to giving the leadership of the team to Chief Anenih because he was impressed with his contributions that ensured his emergence at Eagle Square, particularly the high wire politics that ensured that the PDP governors kept to their own side of the deal, some other chieftains of the party are persuading the president to exercise caution and give the job to Dr. Ahmadu Ali. “Jonathan wouldn’t mind if Anenih leads the team because his advice came handy when the governors were playing pranks with the president before the party’s national convention. But wise counsel might prevail in the choice of Ahmadu Ali, who is from the North Central state of Kogi. But a member of the Jonathan/Sambo presidential campaign team and confidant of the former chairman of PDP BoT, however, dismissed insinuations that a leadership tussle was on. “Chief Anenih isn’t interested. In fact, if anybody should lead, it should be Ahmadu Ali, that is, if he is in the picture, since he is from the North. Remember that when Jonathan was an aspirant, Ambassador Sarkin Tafida from the North led the campaign. Now that Jonathan is the party’s presidential candidate, the Acting National Chairman, Dr. Haliru Bello Mohammed, who is equally from the North, should lead the campaign. I don’t want to believe that should create any disaffection within the party.’’ But Daily Sun investigation also revealed that while the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) wanted to take over the President Jonathan’s campaign structure, as was the practice, having emerged as the party’s candidate, members of the President Jonathan/Sambo campaign office at Plateau House, are not willing to let go. A Daily Sun source disclosed that the leadership of the party is concerned that the presidential campaign activities that should have taken off at Legacy House, as was the practice, remain hazy, as no team has been constituted. While it is already public knowledge that President Jonathan would flag off his campaign next week in Nasarawa and Oyo states, next Monday and Tuesday, respectively, mum is the word at Wadata Plaza, the party’s national secretariat. Efforts to speak with the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Professor Ahmed Rufai Alkali was unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls made by Daily Sun reporter. But an inside source at Plateau House corroborated the scheduled campaign activities for Nasarawa and Oyo states. He, however, denied insinuations of distrust between Jonathan/Sambo campaign team and the party national secretariat. “There is no cause for alarm; there would be harmonisation, very soon,’’ the source further submitted. Also reacting to speculation of disaffection between the PDP NWC and the president’s campaign office, Director, Media and Publicity, of the Jonathan/ Sambo presidential campaign office, Sully Abu dismissed it as unfounded. “Where did you get that from? Who told you there is disaffection? Well, there is nothing like that,’’ Abu told Daily Sun. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/newsonthehour/2011/feb/04/newsbreak-04-02-2011-001.htm |
2 corps members, 8 others arrested over DDC machines | Print | E-mail Written by Adebayo Waheed Friday, 04 February 2011 NO fewer than 10 people, including two Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Registration Officers (youth corps members) have been arrested and detained by the police in Saki West Local Government Area of Oyo State for the strange discovery of Direct Data Capture machines (DDC) in a forest near a Fulani settlement in the area. A top official of the council, it was gathered was also being interrogated for allegedly aiding the crime, and transporting people from the town to the forest for registration. Nigerian Tribune leant that the corps members were said to have left the people at the registration centre and disappeared with the DDC machines before they were later found in the forest with some people allegedly working for the top official of the council. The strange discovery was said to have sparked off protest from the people who accused the INEC officials of encouraging fraud by conniving with some politicians. The agrarian town of Egbeda, it was learnt, was condoned off by policemen who prevented the protest from turning into a blood-bath on Thursday, as the suspects were whisked away to the police station for interrogation. A member of the Accord Party in the area, Honourable Jimoh West, who spoke with journalists on the incident, said the matter was reported to the Saki West Police Division, adding that the top official of the council, two INEC registration officers and eight others were currently being detained by the police in connection with the discovery. He said “when people alerted us to the DDC machines in the forest, we went to report at the police station and were later accompanied by policemen to the scene.” http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17122--2-corps-members-8-others-arrested-over-ddc-machines |
Crisis imminent as A’Court boss dares CJN •Over controversial promotion | Print | E-mail Written by Lanre Adewole, Abuja Friday, 04 February 2011 TROUBLE is brewing at the top echelon of the judicial arm of government over the controversial recommendation of the president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami, for upward movement to the Supreme Court, given the outright rejection of same by the jurist. The Federal Judicial Service Commission, headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, had, on Tuesday, recommended Salami for elevation to the apex court, with the attempt to move him from the Court of Appeal reportedly generating a lot of furore. Salami and Katsina-Alu, who were sworn into office the same day, January 3, 2010, and also classmates at the Law School, Nigerian Tribune learnt, did not enjoy a chummy relationship, with issues getting to a head on a petition arising from Sokoto State gubernatorial election, which the apex court leadership took over in an unprecedented manner, arrested the prepared judgment of the Court of Appeal panel on it and gave victory to Governor Aliyu Wammako. Nigerian Tribune was told on Thursday night that the ongoing move to dislodge Salami from the Court of Appeal was the second attempt by the leadership of the judiciary, which was said to have promoted him to the apex court a few months to the retirement of Salami’s predecessor, Justice Umaru Abdullahi, in order to allegedly stop him (Salami) from succeeding him. The source noted that “Justice Salami, of course, turned the promotion offer down outright, since he has the right of refusal.” However, in the current effort, it was learnt that the Federal Judicial Service Commission had been ordered by its leadership to send Salami’s name to the National Judicial Commission (NJC) for onward transmission to President Goodluck Jonathan for approval as required by law. A senior judicial officer told the Nigerian Tribune on Thursday night that the CJN was just courting crisis, alleging that he was hell-bent on destroying the system before leaving office in August. The officer wondered why Salami, whose salary is at par with the justices of the apex court, would be compelled to move to the apex court. “He (Salami) cannot be forced. He has a right of refusal. There would be so many crises. He had earlier rejected the controversial promotion when he was number two to Abdullahi. It is not done, It has never happened. The problem had started brewing when he was queried over the Sokoto issue. The issue would come up for discussion in March when the NJC would meet. “Salami is a member of the NJC and when he is seated in March, we would all see how he would be compelled right in his presence to accept what he said he did not want,” the source said. It was also gathered that there were moves already to have the retirement age of the justices of the Supreme Court extended to 75 years, which might see the current CJN staying beyond August. When contacted for reaction, the mobile telephone line of the spokesperson of the Supreme Court, Mr Festus Aweneri, was said to be switched off http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/17120-crisis-imminent-as-acourt-boss-dares-cjn-over-controversial-promotion |

Buhari has been a GOC,pioneer chairman of NNPC,Minister of petroleum, head of state,Chairman of PTF and so many other top positions. Buhari does not have a house in Lagos or Abuja,he has only two houses,a modest one in Kaduna and another in his village daura which he inherited from his father. Gen Buhari does not own a filling station not to talk of an oil well.the first lady by her asset declaration is far richer than Buhari not to talk of her husband, both of whom have not half the positions Buhari has held.some commissioners, house of assembly members, local govt chairmen are richer than buhari not to talk of Sinators,Representathieves,Govs,Ministers etc, this are the same people than want the status quo to be maintained,so the can continue to steal with impunity, how can GEJ do in 4yrs what his party could not do in 12,lets not be so gullible and fool ourselves or allow them to take your for a ride again. Wouldn't u be happy to see those theiving politicians behind bars, light, rule of law etc, vot Buhari-Bakare vote BB for the bloodless revolution, thank you. ![]() |
