Yar'Adua’s Aides Fingere.d in Big Rip-off of NNPC Newsdiaryonline Sun Feb 28,2010 Fresh fact emerging from Abuja indicate that the cabal that has been determined to keep President Umaru Musa YarAdua in office has been doing so for their personal gains. It is now know within the corridors of power that close aides of YarAdua have been ripping off government parastatals all ‘in the name of the president’ even when it is evident now that the president has not been strong enough to give such directives. The practice of dropping the president’s name to loot is said to have been going on for quite a long time. Newsdiaryonline has learnt that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ,NNPC is the hardest hit by aides of the president.Perhaps emboldened by the inability of the President to appear in public which has equally made them realize that they have been conned into approving these sweet -heart deals, top officials of NNPC are now ``crying out that aides of the president have finished NNPC.`` While this rip off is going on, those who have seen Yar'Adua describe him to be in ``vegetable `` state. This state of the sick president is now well known among government officials in Abuja.YarAdua returned from Saudi Arabia last Wednesday but he has failed to either address the nation or appear in public.A reliable source said the president may soon be flown abroad again for further attention.Media reports today suggest that he may head for Germany this time around .But it is not certain yet if he will be able to make the trip. The strategy of these aides has been to get NNPC to award contracts and related oil deals to people whom they claimed were candidates of President YarAdua when in actual fact these aides were merely perfecting the massive looting of the oil sector to line their pockets .It has also been revealed that some of these aides got their cuts after such contracts or special favours have been dished out in what may turn out to be the most deliberate and massive looting of NNPC.The exact scale of the looting has not been revealed but insiders aid these people have finished the oil corporation. Already two close aides are being named in the big rip off. They include security and military personnel known to be very close to the president. Details of their involvement remain sketchy but a serious investigation is likely to reveal very disturbing looting. http://newsdiaryonline.com/big_rip_off.htm |

Global crisis: Print naira now, Jimoh Ibrahim urges FG By Yemi Kolapo Published: Thursday, 19 Feb 2009 Skip to next paragraph Photo File Jimoh Ibrahim The Chief Executive Officer, Global Fleet Group, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, has advised the Federal Government to look into the possibility of printing more naira as an urgent solution to the current global financial crisis, and to improve liquidity in the economy. In a statement made available to our correspondent on Wednesday, Ibrahim said it was better and more cost-effective to print the naira than to deplete the country’s external reserves or support domestic spending through foreign reserves withdrawals. According to him, even though printing naira notes will lead to inflation, this can be controlled using Treasury Bills to mop up excess liquidity. But the Central Bank of Nigeria dismissed this as impracticable, saying that the country should be talking about fiscal stimulus at this point in time. The Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, CBN, Mr. Festus Odoko, said in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday that economists would not argue that the country should print naira in the current situation, adding that it was necessary to think through solutions properly. “If we print money now, how do we use it? The necessary thing at this period is to put money in critical sectors to jumpstart the economy, and it is the government that does these things,” Odoko said. But Ibrahim said printing naira notes would reduce interest rates and increase liquidity while banks would be well funded to be able to fund companies. “Properly funded companies will not cut jobs; they will reduce unemployment; they will fund capacity utilisation; and by extension, spending habits will be promoted, which will lead to increased activities at the Nigerian Stock Exchange,” he argued. The chief executive noted that it would be better for government to control the inflation that could be triggered as a result of this action than to keep spending government foreign reserves. He said, “Government is the largest spender in our economy and the moment they stop spending, the economy stops performing. Cutting domestic spending as per federation account by 34 per cent will lead to more pains and aggravate recession. “We cannot afford to stop projects and development programmes, particularly seven point agenda, good roads and infrastructure.” Ibrahim argued that printing of naira at this time was a confrontational approach to the on-going crisis, saying that “when every sector of the economy (private and public) is active and spending is persistent, recession will disappear”. “If you cannot manage recession you will go into depression,” he added. He advised government not to cut spending, saying that the crisis would only be tackled with enhanced spending. He said the Central Bank of Nigeria should be able to correct interest rates, adding that savings must be discouraged so as to encourage economic activities. Naira now 200 to dollar Odidison Omankhanlen, Lagos - 16.03.2009 The nation’s currency has continued to maintain a free fall against other world currencies at the weekend as the naira exchanged for N200 for US dollar. This confirms the fears expressed by analysts earlier last year that the naira would attain N200 for US dollar in the first quarter of the year. The present development has rendered ineffective, efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to check the falling naira. It will be recalled that the apex regulatory body of the banking sectors had embarked on several measures to check the sliding naira. These have, however, failed to achieve the desired results. The foreign exchange market has virtually moved to the parallel market, where black marketers are experiencing boom. A bureau-de-change operator in Ikeja told the Nigerian Tribune that the situation was getting out of hand, stressing that despite their efforts, the naira was still maintaining free fall. http://www.tribune.com.ng/16032009/news/news16.html |

The Legend has been sentenced to three years, for expressing himself Iraqi shoe-thrower jailed for three years An Iraqi reporter who threw his shoes at former US President George W Bush has been sentenced to three years in prison. Muntazer al-Zaidi worked for Al-Baghdadiya television and earned worldwide fame when he threw his shoes at Mr Bush at a news conference in December. Lawyers for Mr al-Zaidi, who pleaded not guilty, said he was simply reflecting the views of many Iraqis. 'This sentence is harsh and is not in harmony with the law, and eventually the defence team will contest this in the appeals court,' said his lawyer Dhiaa al-Saadi. Mr al-Zaidi was brought into the Iraq Central Criminal Court under a heavy police escort. He was charged with aggression against a foreign head of state during an official visit and could have been given a maximum sentence of 15 years. The trial first opened on 19 February but was adjourned to determine the nature of the former US president's farewell visit to Iraq on 14 December. On his final trip to Iraq, Mr Bush had been at a televised press conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki when Mr al-Zaidi threw his shoes at Mr Bush, who managed to duck just in time. The gesture is considered a grave and symbolic insult in the Arab and Muslim world. |

Ekiti imposes curfew 11/3/2009 From Odunayo Ogunmola, Ado-Ekiti Ekiti State Acting Governor Olatunji Odeyemi yesterday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Oye-Ekiti, where one person was killed on Monday and three others were injured in a politically-motivated clash. Sadiq Ahmed, 33, a member of the Action Congress (AC), was killed and three other AC supporters were injured when Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and AC members clashed over the use of the community hall for a free medical programme initiated by the AC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. Both parties have been trading blame over who is responsible for the mayhem. Odeyemi, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Rotimi Ajisola, said the curfew became imperative given the political crisis that rocked Oye, the headquarters of Oye Local Government Area. According to the statement, the curfew will last from 7.00 pm till 6.00 am until further notice. The government said it would deal with troublemakers, irrespective of their political parties. Odeyemi said the government would not allow any person or group to turn the state into a battleground. Odeyemi said he would soon convoke a stakeholders’ meeting to ensure peaceful co-existence among warring politicians in the run-up to the court-ordered re-run governorship election. The PDP, at a news conference, accused the AC of plotting to assassinate many of the party’s chieftains. It alleged that the assassination plot was hatched at a meeting at an Akure hotel. The Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Segun Campaign Organisation (SOCO), Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, told reporters that some public offices including those of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the state broadcasting service, some police stations and private buildings of the PDP chieftains had been marked for attacks. He said:" In spite of this deliberate provocation, we members of the PDP, a peace-loving political party, are not going to join the AC in the destruction of lives and property. "This is also bearing in mind the fact that the AC has a sinister agenda, which is to throw the state into chaos with a view to getting the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state." Adeyeye urged law enforcement agents to be vigilant and to check the planned violence. But the AC denied the assassination plot. It described the allegation as a "barn of falsehood and political decoy to accuse the AC of phantom assassination". A statement by Head, Media Committee, AC Governorship Campaign, Mr Yemi Adaramodu, said the party and Fayemi had no reason to destabilise the state ahead of the re-run. The AC absolves its members from blame over the Oye-Ekiti mayhem, which it blamed on Senator Ayo Arise. The party said: "All over Nigeria, the PDP is known for its notoriety of settling even internal scores with guns and machetes. For Ekiti PDP, which killed its member during an ordinary ward congress in Aramoko Ekiti to accuse the AC of evil act, smacks of extreme brinkmanship. "We had severally cried out that our lives are not safe in the hands of these political scavengers who would raise a false alarm to cover their tracks. They tried to eliminate four of our honourable members, while Acting Speaker Saliu Adeoti of the AC narrowly missed bullets of suspected PDP assailants recently. "The recent tragedy visited on Oye Ekiti was a mere dress rehearsal of the gory theatre of the hell that Ekiti PDP has scripted for our members.
