One Killed, Several Wounded As PDP, AC Supporters Clash In Ekiti By Gbenga Sodeinde , Correspondent, Ado Ekiti Ahmed Sadiq, a member of the Action Congress (AC), died on Monday and several others were injured in Oye-Ekiti in Ekiti State when the convoy of AC Governorship candidate, Kayode Fayemi, was attacked. Oye-Ekiti is the home town of Senator Ayo Arise, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Appeal Court last month quashed the election of Segun Oni and ordered a rerun ballot in 10 of the 16 councils in the state within 90 days. Oni also belongs to the PDP. Trouble started when a hall which was reportedly booked a week earlier for Fayemi's free health campaign was taken over by PDP supporters. In the ensuing fracas, several people were wounded, including 70-year-old Alice Oladunjoye, who was shot at the back of the neck and taken to the hospital in critical condition, a witnessed said. Both sides have been trading blame for the incident. An AC member, Bimbo Daramola, said it confirmed that the PDP is jittery that Fayemi would win "because AC is more popular in Oye and Arise knows that the free health scheme would boost his chances. "But we will repel it. How can Arise, who comes from this local government, be obstructing another man from this local government over a programme that would benefit his people when his (PDP) failed to do it?" However, Arise denied the charge, explaining that he was to have a meeting with the council Chairman at the hall at 8 a.m. but that his men met AC people there who told them that they paid for the venue a week before him. He said AC members attacked his men and the policemen who escorted them to the hall. Arise alleged that both his Personal Assistant and his younger brother received machete cuts and his vehicle was vandalised. He confirmed that he reported the matter to Police Commissioner, Chris Ola, and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO). About six police vans arrived Arise's residence immediately after he called for police assistance. State PDP Director of Communications and Strategy, Jackson Adebayo said: "It is obvious that AC has a sinister agenda. The party is not ready for the re-run election and the only way out is to throw the state into chaos with a view to getting the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Ekiti." The latest clash is the fourth in two weeks. http://www.independentngonline.com/news/head/article01 |

why wouldnt the stupid greedy law breaker endorse him, when hes the one that got them into that corrupt chamber. |
Its rather unfortunate that a religious organization that is supposed to be preaching peace and putting ppl on the right track is speaking like this, with these kind of utterances, how can we ever hav peace. |

Gaskiya it would be very foolish to think that legalizing firearms will reduce fighting. Wat do u think will happen in hoodlums, touts, area boys have access to fire arms? The disadvantages are far more than the advantages,so lets leave the firearms to the police and soldiers. |

Free-for-all in Ekiti PDP as peace moves fail 28/2/2009 Yusuf ALLI, Managing Editor, Northern Operation An attempt by the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which moved to Ekiti State to reconcile the warring factions of the party ahead of the governorship re-run election collapsed Friday evening in Ado-Ekiti. The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) which had arrived the state on a fence-mending mission witnessed the bitter row that ensued among party members and chieftains at the Jibowu Hall of the Government House venue of the meeting. Two South West governors on the platform of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State and Otunba Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State who witnessed the show of shame were embarrassed by the free-for-all engaged in by irate party members who disagreed on modalities for the reconciliation of the party ahead of the re-run polls. Ogbulafor who led the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Dr Bello Haliru, the National Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, the National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo appealed for peace among party loyalists, urging them to go back to their constituencies and ensure that the party regains the governorship seat lost to the February 17 Appeal Court judgment. Former Governor Ayodele Fayose who led a host of aggrieved chieftains of the party chided the national leadership of the party for allegedly reneging on the agreement reached in Abuja before he and other party members could work for the return of the deposed Governor, Mr Olusegun Oni in the re-run election. Other party chieftains were furious that the national leadership of the party is giving Fayose priority in the reconciliation moves. The claim by Ogbulafor that the crisis rocking the party had been settled angered many party members who accused the national leaders of insincerity and papering over the apparent cracks on the wall of the party. Two governorship aspirants of the party, Mr Yinka Akerele and Prof Adesegun Ojo who came first and second respectively in the primaries of the party held in December 2006 openly protested their non-recognition by the Acting Governor, Mr Olatunji Odeyemi. Ojo who decided to walk out of the venue was begged by other chieftains to keep his cool. Many political office holders on the platform of the party rushed towards the direction of Akerele to pacify him as he did not hide his anger at the turn of events Party chiefs like former Senator, Dr Bode Olowoporoku, another governorship aspirant, Mr Deji Adesua and a board member of the State Electricity Board, Mr Sikiru Babalola openly condemned the party’s reconciliation process which they believed was not all-inclusive. Top notchers of the party at the meeting included Oni, Senators Ayo Arise, Adefemi Kila, Representatives Titilayo Akindahunsi, Wale Aribisala, Duro Faseyi and Kehinde Odebunmi, former Governors Paul Alabi, Abiodun Aluko, Abiodun Olujimi, former ministers Prof Tunde Adeniran, Prof Babalola Borishade, House of Assembly members, council chairmen and other political office holders at the state level. Mrs Olujimi and former Speaker, Mr Olufemi Bamisile did a yeoman’s job in calming frayed nerves among irate party members as their supporters who engaged in name-calling and shouting match outside the meeting hall later forced their way inside to watch the melee of their principals. Ogbulafor while delivering his address commended party members in the state for their loyalty and support for the PDP and expressed satisfaction of the national secretariat for bringing warring factions together. The party boss revealed that the national leaders had looked into the grievances of all aggrieved members appealing to members to ensure that they work for the return of Oni at the next re-run election saying "we are all children of God under the same umbrella". He explained that the party leaders have been having sleepless nights over the crisis rocking the Ekiti State chapter of the party urging party members to be united to overcome the challenge of the Action Congress (AC) in the re-run election. Ogbulafor who described the acting governor as a man of peace and a bridge builder also urged him to do everything possible to ensure that the PDP wins the re-run election adding that Ekiti will be better off remaining in the mainstream politics of the country. When Ogbulafor asked Fayose to hug Oni, the controversial ex-governor who relunctantly stood up from his chair refused to hug his successor but only touched Oni’s shoulder. A very rowdy session ensued for about thirty minutes with the meeting inconclusive as party chieftains and members leaving the venue with noise filling the hall with Ogbulafor losing control of the proceedings. Oni and other top party leaders at the high table watched helplessly with the supporters of the various factions of the party chanting the names of their principals. Series of meetings had earlier been held at the Presidential Lodge of the Government House before the party chieftains stormed the Jibowu Hall to meet with the stakeholders before they commenced another meeting at the lodge after the open reconciliation talks commenced at about 4.27 pm. Ogun governor Daniel did not attend the second round of talks after the row broke out at Jibowu Hall but left immediately through a helicopter which brought him to the Ekiti State capital. Fayose emerged from the second round of meeting with Oyinlola who tried in vain to convince Fayose to relax some of the terms he gave to the party before he could work for Oni at the re-run polls, maintaining that the national secretariat has failed in its bid to put the PDP house in order before the re-run election. The former governor told a crowd of reporters who swarmed around him for an interview after emerging from the meeting maintained that he rejected in totality the reconciliation process brokered by the PDP national leadership which he said negated the agreement he reached with the NWC in Abuja . Fayose explained that he stands on the Abuja agreement he reached with the national leadership which include the immediate dissolution of the PDP executive in Ekiti to make way for the inauguration of an all-inclusive caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party in the state and the sharing of party and government positions. His words: "I want to emphasize that I reject in totality the reconciliation process of the national leadership of the party to Ekiti today (yesterday) because it negates the agreement we reached in Abuja and because of this re-run election, they must revisit the Abuja agreement. "I want to say in clear terms that anything short of the Abuja agreement is unacceptable and I urge my supporters to remain calm and await further directives on the forthcoming re-run election because what is done today is unacceptable and is rejected in totality. "We will tell the PDP that the line between them and success at the polls is thin and I want them to remember that I suffered and laboured to build the party but we have to be very careful for the party not to lose Ekiti. "Let wait and see how things will go; I have not directed my supporters to go to other parties until the PDP tells me that they are ready to keep our agreement. The PDP should be cautious not to let this agreement break down. "We want the state executive of the party to be dissolved to be replaced with a caretaker committee but if they refuse to dissolve the party executive, they will go and I will sink them in this state". The former governor who addressed a mammoth crowd of his supporters waiting outside the Government House on the outcome of the meeting noted that Oni would soon be driven into political oblivion by the action of the PDP leaders maintaining that he remains a crucial factor in the politics of the state. http://www.thenationonlineng.com/dynamicpage.asp?id=78369 |
