Nigeria dumps image laundering project

Lagos, Nigeria - Nigeria has dumped its ''Heart of Africa'' image laundering project, embarked upon during the second-term of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as a failure.

In its place, the government has launched a Re-branding Campaign to polish off the country's image, believed to have been dented, perhaps more than any other thing, by the activities of a few crooks who swindled many foreigners of their money through the Advance Fee Fraud, known locally as '419', named after the relevant section of the nation's penal code.

''Heart of Africa could not fly for many reasons. The name is contentious. Malawi was the first country to use the Heart of Africa slogan and many other countries have laid claims to being the heart of Africa,'' Information Minister Dora Akunyili told participants at the campaign in Abuja on Monday.

Explaining further why the Heart of Africa project failed, she said: ''Heart of Africa was first launched overseas and that automatically disconnected the ordinary Nigerian from this project, making it look elitist.''

Prof. Akunyili said that the government had therefore decided to embark on a new branding project that will be home grown.

On the need to re-brand Nigeria, the Minister said it was so critical because it would address the fundamental issue of how the country and its citizenry were perceived and treated.

''This is fundamental to our national development. Ministers will come and go. Presidents will come and go, but Nigeria will remain. This re-branding is about our collective interest, our image as a country and as a people in the present and the future,'' she said.

The Heart of Africa project was launched with fanfare in world capitals and showcased on the global cable television CNN by then Information Minister Frank Nweke.

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State said at the weekend that he had not in anyway mended his fractured political relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar but noted that the former number two citizen was making overtures through his friends, associates and traditional rulers to see him.
Reacting to a news report at the weekend that he had reconciled with Atiku, the governor, who was a former naval chief said nothing could be further from the truth.
The story had claimed that Atiku and Nyako met at an undisclosed location in Abuja after some governors prevailed on a reluctant Atiku to meet with the governor.
But a statement from his Principal Special Assistant( Media), Aminu Iyawa, said "Governor Nyako wishes to unequivocally deny the said meeting ever took place. To the contrary, it is the former Vice President who has been sending emissaries to prevail on the Admiral to see him".
According to the statement "even before Atiku's publicised meeting with Chief Obasanjo, the former President called the governor on three separate occasions to inform the Adamawa State chief executive that his subject (Atiku), has been pestering him (Obasanjo) for reconciliation and offer apologies for his mistakes while serving as his deputy".
When contacted the Atiku camp refused to be drawn into the controversy but agreed that the former VP did not meet the Adamawa governor.
A statement from Atiku's spokesman Garba Shehu through SMS said "the story is a fabrication by third parties to provoke this type of thoughtless and intemperate reaction of the Governor's Adviser. We agree with them that the VP and the governor have not met.” Garba said that Atiku believes that the mutual respect between him and Admiral Nyako will continue to be for the good of Adamawa state.

Gunmen invade Fasubaa’s aide’s home 9/2/2009

From Odunayo Ogunmola, Ado-Ekiti

Some unknown gunmen at the weekend were at the home of the Personal Assistant (PA) to the former Chairman of Ado Local Government, Mr. Taye Fasubaa, Odunayo Ogunleye.
Ogunleye had left his Ado-Ekiti home for a nearby pub when the gunmen held his wife and sister-in-law hostage.

Narrating his ordeal to reporters yesterday, Ogunleye said he received a call from his wife at about 8.17 pm, telling him that "some strange men wanted to see me."

He said his wife told him that three members of the gang scaled the fence and the last member was inside a car, which was parked in front of his house.

His words: "They held my household at gunpoint but our landlady invited the vigilante people in the neighbourhood who engaged the criminals and in the course of the scuffle, one of the guns they brought dropped as they made to escape."

He said about N94, 000 and jewellery worth N50, 000 were stolen from his wife.

Ogunleye said he had reported the matter to the Oke-Ila Police Station.

Violence rocks Ekiti community over obaship tussle 9/2/2009

From Odunayo Ogunmola, Ado-Ekiti

The peace of Ijan-Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State was shattered at the weekend as the festering obaship crisis in the community snowballed into a violent clash.
At least five houses were burnt and some prominent individuals injured.

It was gathered that the crisis was caused by an alleged attempt by the traditional ruler of the town, the Onijan, Oba Samuel Oyewole Fadahunsi, to renovate the palace for occupation despite an alleged warning by the opposing Ogbon-Omo Ruling House.

His opponents cited the pending the court case as a reason why he should not move into the palace.

Oba Fadahunsi of the Otutubiosun Ruling House who had been residing in his personal house decided to move into the palace following his recent victory at an Ado-Ekiti High Court

The monarch was said to have stormed the palace with members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), but his opponents insisted that the matter is not yet over as they are ready to pursue the case to the Supreme Court.

Some individuals opposed to the ascension of Oba Fadahunsi were said to have mobilised others to prevent the monarch from occupying the palace.

This led to a bloody clash between his supporters and opponents.

Among those hit by bullets during the mayhem was the Oniyare of Ijan, Chief Sesan Fabamise and the son of the immediate past Onijan, Prince Adegbite Obarinde.

All the injured are receiving treatment at various hospitals.

Weapons and charms were used in the free-for-all.

A detachment of riot policemen was deployed in the town to restore order.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ola, declined to speak on the mayhem.

Former Governor Ayodele Fayose condemned the state government for accusing him of masterminding the Ijan mayhem.

Fayose, who was reacting to a report aired on the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State, said he was in Ode-Ekiti, the Gbonyin Local Government Area headquarters, during the incident, wondering why he was being linked to the mayhem.

"I was at Ode-Ekiti distributing crash helmets and other poverty alleviation materials to my supporters and I never passed through Ijan while going to Ode as I went through Ikere.

"I see this latest government-sponsored propaganda as an attempt to malign my person and rubbish the good works that I have been doing of recent in all the local government areas of the state. "

An Ado-Ekiti High Court on Friday deposed the Onikoyi of Ikoyi in Ikole Local Government Area, Oba Julius Olalere Falaki.

Justice D.O. Jegede dethroned Oba Falaki in a three-and-half hour judgment on grounds that his ascension violated the state Chieftaincy Laws.

The sacked monarch hails from Ilasa in Emuyin dynasty and was enthroned in 2003 following the demise of Oba Abraham Ajibade from the Iledin ruling house

Justice Jegede held that the State Chieftaincy Laws which was hitherto in force did not recognise the Ilasa clan saying the ascension to the throne of Oba Falaki was illegal.

300 Cadbury jobs gone as PAN sends home 565 9/2/2009

From Tony Akowe (Kaduna), Sanni Ologun (Abuja)and Kelvin Osa-Okunbor

The Federal Government is preparing a soft-landing for Nigerians abroad who may be forced to return home by the global financial meltdown, Labour and Productivity Minister Adetokunbo Kayode has said.
He told reporters in Abuja at the weekend that the government would prepare a "buffer" to receive those who might lose their jobs.

But the global crisis seems to have made its way to Nigeria. Vehicle maker Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) has sent home 565 of its 753 workers and placed the rest on half salary due to the recession.

Confectionery giant Cadbury Nigeria Plc has fired 300 workers in what it called "comprehensive review of our business strategy".

PZ is said to be getting set to leave Nigeria.

Kayode said many Nigerians would have no choice but to return home after becoming jobless.

He said the government foresaw the influx. It is ready to receive them.

Kayode said the envisaged crisis made the government to take job creation more seriously.

Part of the measures being planned, according to the minister, is a National Summit on employment.

He said: "We want to take the issue of job creation as a matter of priority and development in Nigeria. There will be a National Summit coming soon, with a work plan. It is not just going to be a talk-show and just one of the programmes, especially now that the economic crunch is here.

"We know that a lot of Nigerians are going to be coming home from abroad because the foreign jobs they used to do are no longer there. With the new policy abroad, foreigners shall be forced to leave for the citizens to take over and when there is no job there, you are finished when you cannot pay your bills, your mortgages.

"Because of the loss of jobs abroad, that has added to the unemployment here."

Kayode said the summit would be held at the end of next month.

Kayode said the government would put in place a serious budget implementation plan.

He blamed the institutional weaknesses on corruption, which allows the "diversion of public funds into private pockets".

Kayode said: "The Public Procurement Policy should allow for efficiency. It is all about expending money on government programmes which are people-oriented. Mr. President wants to know that all approved projects for which money has been appropriated are done at every quarter. He wants to see this done well. So, may be this should lead to the amendment of the Public Procurement Act. We are looking at that.

"The social security policy is coming too. The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) will be strengthened. The efficiency and productivity policy is coming. This requires that efficiency at workplace shall be necessary to enhance productivity. If you spend N10 on a programme, you must be able to reap more, in terms of results.

"A national policy on Labour matters is coming. It will afford the labour sector avenue to complain to the appropriate committee constituted to thrash complaints and resolve crisis early to reduce manhour loss. We can’t afford to have a history of palaver in Nigeria."

PAN, however, denied sacking the workers, saying they were merely sent home because of lack of raw materials for its operations. The workers will be recalled immediately the raw materials arrive in Nigeria within the next two months, the company said.

Sources close to the company told The Nation that it sacked the workers because its operation had been affected by the global economic crunch.

Said the source: "We were told the global financial crisis will not affect Nigeria. But look at PAN; they cannot function at the moment and they have been forced to send their staff home. In fact, about three quarters of the staff have been sent home. The remaining ones are on half salary.

"Do you know what that means? It means that the global financial crisis is here with us. Imagine PAN cannot produce right now and has to sack its workers."

The company’s Assistant Manager (Corporate Affairs), Mallam Rabiu Ibrahim, denied that the company sacked its workers, who he said were merely sent home pending the arrival of raw materials.

He said: "What you heard is not true. What happened is that at the moment, we are experiencing what we call industrial shutdown. It is a global practice and not restricted to PAN .

"We are awaiting the arrival of our raw materials and immediately these goods arrive, the company will recall its staff who are at home. They have not been sacked, but they have been placed on standby.

"During the period they are at home, they will be paid half salary. We are waiting for the raw materials which we hope will arrive any moment from now. Hopefully, the materials will come in within the next two months and we will commence operations again."

"When that happens, all the workers presently at home will be recalled to their duty posts. I can confirm to you that nobody has been sacked by this company," Ibrahim said.

In Lagos, Senate President David Mark yesterday advised federal and state governments to diversify their economies as the falling prices of crude oil in the international market could spell doom for them.

Mark, who was on his way to Abuja, spoke to reporters at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja.

He explained that the signals given by the falling crude oil prices were enough indicators that a mono-product economy could have ripple effects on the country.

He challenged states to consider areas where they have comparative advantage in the growing of a particular cash crop to earn sufficient revenue.

Mark said: "Is that not the more reason we have always said we should diversify the economy, so that crude oil is not the only source of generating foreign exchange? If it is the only source of foreign exchange, we will run into crisis.

"But, we could have jolly well gone for agriculture, which really is our main economic activity."

On the effect of the global financial crisis on Nigeria, the Senate President said: "We do not need a bill in the Senate to propel the executive arm of government to take urgent steps to cushion the effect of the meltdown. It is purely an executive policy decision. At least states are told to embark on certain agricultural crops or produce so that Lagos, for instance, can take one economic crop and it becomes its mainstay and if you want tons and tons of that economic produce, you can go to Lagos State and they can produce enough to feed the nation, feed the rest of Africa."

Answering another question on the effect of the meltdown on Nigeria, Mark said: "You see, we have called the governor of the Central Bank several times, we also called the economic team several times and the assurance we have been receiving is that things will be okay. That is the assurance. If the people who are there and are supposed to know are giving us assurance, then, we should not have any difficulty.

"I’m sure that the government has a back-up plan but if you don’t have a problem now, you don’t begin to bail out, unless the problem comes. There is no problem and so, there is no bailout yet but I’m sure that the government is fully prepared for it, just in case it happens. Just in case."
