There is a guy on here, by name Afam who can help you with this. His URL is: http://www.justalternativepower.com/

Perhaps you could contact him either via email or phone.

I hope this helps.
ComputersRe: Computer Science Or Engineering, Which Is Better by my2cents(m): 10:31am On Apr 17, 2007
In lay man's terms, computer science(CS) is like a pilot whereas computer engineering (CE) is like a plane. Even better, CS is like soup whereas CE is like eba. Without a pilot, you can't fly a plane. Without soup, your eba-eating experience will be horrific and sacrilegious to say the least. In the end though, a CE guy can always switch b/w disciplines and be a CS guy without much difficulty. This can't be said of the other way around.

In general though, you shouldn't do a course because one is better than the other or because one pays more than the other. You should do a course based on liking it. The money may be good, but of what point is the money if you go to work frustrated? I personally look forward to going to work everyday because I enjoy what I do. In fact, I would even do it for free if I had the money to pay the bills, maintain the family etc. This is how you should determine your career choice.

If on the other hand, you have the talent for either, then I would suggest you go into CS. It's one thing to be a programmer but it's another to not only program but know the why behind the how.

I hope this helps.
WebmastersRe: Designing A Website: For Beginners by my2cents(m): 10:21am On Apr 17, 2007
akinwunmi,

I don't agree with your assertion. Perhaps I am missing something and you can educate us all about how Notepad could be more or less "a compiler".

Notepad is a text editor. You open it, type in stuff and/or make editions, and close it. It doesn't convert what you type into byte/assembly code that could then be run as a program. If you call NotePad more or less "a compiler", then you might as well call dreamweaver, homesite, intelliJ and Eclipse compilers as well.

I hope this helps.
WebmastersRe: Is It True by my2cents(m): 2:09pm On Apr 15, 2007
NO, and guess what? You don't even need a computer science-related degree to be a programmer/designer either.

Let's discuss how it was for us at the polls on this election day. How were the lines? Did you feel your vote would be counted? Do you think the elections are "free and fair"? Was there any commotion?

Let's discuss.
WebmastersRe: Site Review Please: OffspringConsult.com by my2cents(m): 9:22pm On Apr 12, 2007
the continuous flash stuff, though personal, is something you should look at reducing/outright eliminating. It makes me, and perhaps others out there, nauseous. I hope you understand.

As far as s/w used to review, I don't have any. It is just a standard I use to review sites for pple/companies that request that I review their sites. For NL, I just so happen to use an abridged version, hence for the most part, my reviews sound the same. For paying clients, I have a more detailed process though wink

I hope this helps.
WebmastersRe: Site Review Please: OffspringConsult.com by my2cents(m): 9:51pm On Apr 11, 2007
On the home page, too many "flashes". Any particular reason y? Same applies to header on other pages. Also, I don't think there is a need for the dynamic date at the bottom of the page. If at all, just date and time stamp. It is battleing IMHO, with the "flashes". Those "flashes" are also 61K. I think you could of at least made them smaller.

On "Business Support & Strategy" page, bullets are "hidden" behind the white image. Also, page seems to be "jumping" (in the upper nav area) b/w this page and other pages. Same applies to "Human Resource Planning" page.

Header on "Management Services" page doesn't match header on other pages.

Your background images seem pretty large.

For consistency, I would say make all your square images on each page left-aligned. On "Research & Insights" page, this isn't the case.

I hope these help. In the end, there are many ways to skin a cat. However, one way may be more efficient and cost-effective than another. wink

mni: and ur point is?

IG: I don grow tire. I no fit grow anymore. Now, I am regressing back towards childhood tongue

I am actually not a "programmer", but there are things that are said, regardless of topic, which definitely rubbed me the wrong way. If you are waiting for an apology, you might want to pull up a chair, cos it will be a while. I have no ego. When I first saw a computer, I was 20. I **know** what it means to come from nowhere in the IT field, so when I deal with pple in the IT field, I do so knowing that I was once in their place.

If perhaps you had rephrased your post as "Is JAVA better than .NET?" or "10 reasons y I think JAVA is better than .NET", I wouldn't have reacted so harshly. When I see/hear things which suggest facts but are yet far from it, it gives me heartburn.

To close out, I am not "attacking" you personally, but I am attacking your post. If you still see me as not "grown up' after this post, so be it. I will stand my ground, for reasons stated above, on this one.

Thanks,

niyyie,

Funnier, at least to me, is the word "breakthrough" LOL. The good thing about me, and perhaps others is, whenever I come across such words, I immediately avoid with a passion. If you want to promote something, just come out and say it. Don't try to impress with words.

Given the state of the internet in naija, I doubt there is anything "breakthrough" anymore.

Naija and big grammar, na wa o!

sbucareer et al, no mind am jo tongue

I think I have a pretty accurate profile of IG: either just starting school or is about to graduate. Either way, I think he was given an assignment on the topic and is trying to impress us (as many have tried to impress me) with his vast "knowledge". Obviously, he is more than a bit wet behind the ears.

Using proof by contradiction, I will say this: JAVA is multi-platform and as has been stated above, thanks to J2ME et al, JAVA is widely being used in various applications and I wouldn't be surprised to find out IG owns a couple or so such devices.

Rather than ask the question and open it up for debate, he speaks as an authority. What a joke!

Oga Mayor,

In the end, the law of demand and supply will dictate my final decision. Someone has to pay for the bandwidth eventually. wink

Either way, the user will pay, either via:

1) Ads: what I charge the advertisers will end up being transferred to you, the consumer

2) Directly.

Hopefully more and more pple will sign up, for free, while it isn't too late. Once I advertise the site in various Nigeria and other African countries, and the rush to sign up begins, I will start charging.

So far, many registrants have told me they have either been contacted or done work for pple who found them on WOA. This is just the beginning.

Thanks once again
WebmastersRe: Musings Of A Mad Web Developer by my2cents(op): 7:06pm On Mar 30, 2007
i beg to differ RuuDie,

If you code your pages with web standards in mind, sure, there might be 1 thing that is off on 1 or 2 browsers and that's fine. What I don't like is to see sites that are completely different from one browser to the next.

Take a look at this site for pointers (I have done this in the past and been begged not to post this URL again because it's so horrible but I am afraid I will have to do it again Afam tongue):

http://www.akwaibomstategov.com - open the site in IE first then in FF. OS doesn't matter. It is very obvious that there was no testing in the minds of the developers. And please don't feed me the "how many people view sites in FF anyways?" line. There should be no excuse for bad code. It's like telling a secondary school soccer player to miss the deciding penalty at CAIIPO (brings back memories grin) because after all, it isn't the world cup and so, who's watching.

Back to the AKS site - For a govt trying to attract investments etc, I am sure you will agree with me that the site as it looks in FF is more than an eye sore. 100 lashes with koboko (that has been soaked in pepper soup for 3 days) doesn't even begin to describe my anger towards the developers of the site. I would rather it suck as bad as www.crossriverstate.com than it look the way it does now. At least the CRS site is cross-browser-compatible.

Get back to me if you wish to opine further.
ProgrammingRe: Share Your Programming Tips by my2cents(m): 5:16pm On Mar 29, 2007
did you know that if, in a loop, you assign the size of an array outside of the loop as opposed to including it as ".size" inside, say, the for loop, that you actually save on memory?

In other words, rather than have: (for i=0; i < array.size(); i++), you should have:
var j = array.size();
(for i=0; i < j; i++)

y? cos in the loop, the processor has to calculate the size of the array each time whereas in the 2nd method, it is calculated and stored in "j" just once.

Pretty subtle, but worthy of mention.

I hope this helps.

Living in LA, I wouldn't expect garri to be scarce, though I could be wrong. Perhaps you aren't living/visiting the right neighborhoods?

For me, it's the classical smoking of "oto (as we used to call it in sec sch grin): Garri, sugar, carnation and milo with a few crushed cabin biscuits to boot. Take that with some beans and you will be asking urself what the use of going back to naija is man - it's naija heaven in america tongue

In the past, I have posted my musings in the general section of Nairaland. Now, I have decided to focus on the forum I love best - the webmasters forum grin

[list]
[li]Why do the flash movies featured on sites on this forum go on forever?[/li]
[li]Why don't many people take advantage of the power of the cascade?[/li]
[li]Why don't most of us bother to ensure that our sites are cross-browser?[/li]
[li]Why don't many of us appreciate simplicity of the user interface?[/li]
[li]Why don't we optimize our images, thus ensuring low download times?[/li]

I would normally reserve this for my site commentary at http://www.webmastersofafrica.com/webmasters-of-africa-commentary/, so I guess you guys are lucky tongue

nduaj,

did u just review ur own site, based on ur 2nd post? tongue

Are you still working on the site? Anyways:

1) No need making one long nav bar image. Cd hv achieved same (for less) using CSS

2) Borders around "welcome" and other tabs below nav seem to b "broken". They should surround the tabs, not overlap it

3) I wd rather you put a stop() after the last frame of your flash, instead of it repeating world without end

4) dropdown isnt taking me anywhere

I hope these help.
WebmastersRe: Starting A Web Design Company In Nigeria by my2cents(m): 3:51pm On Mar 26, 2007
to add a little to what gbulio just said:

competition is especially tough in light of the fact that many of us sell ourselves short by charging N40,000 or less for work that should be much more, all in the name of making a quick buck. They forget though, that they will hv to work 2bl hard to get to where the person who charges N100K or more is.

ProgrammingRe: Article: Why A Career In Computer Programming Sucks by my2cents(m): 3:27pm On Mar 26, 2007
computer programming "sucking", to me, is all relative. Where do you live? What kind of "computer programming" are you doing? How many years of experience do you have? Are you working for a .com (where you work 100 hours a day) or an established company with set procedures? Are you into computer programming cos you actually love it or cos in a place where unemployment is high, you figure it is the fastest way to quick money?

I could ask many more, but I think the above should suffice. This is y i say, at least as a web developer, you shouldn't sell yourself short. If you are everything from design, to business logic to front end work to database design, promise to deliver it all in 1 week or less and charging N50,000, then of course computer programming would suck. On the other hand, if you planned your life such that, say, you did only 12 sites a year and charged at least N100,000 for it and did it over the course of 3 weeks, where you actually had time to plan out your strategy, to me, it would be enjoyable.

'hope this helps.

WebmastersRe: Google by my2cents(m): 1:36am On Mar 24, 2007
it all depends on the amount of traffic you can drive to your site.
WebmastersRe: Site Review : Http://www.k-interactive.com by my2cents(m): 2:51am On Mar 23, 2007
1) In moving from the home page to the other sections, the left-side of the right table cell (with your navigation etc) tends to shift slightly. Click back and forth a few times to see what I am saying

2) services page lacks the grey footer

3) Bottom of home page: Didn't seem to be a difference b/w faqs and free quote. Make it obvious I am hovering over 2 different things

4) On various pages, the bottom of the content area isn't touching the grey footer, the same way it is on the home page. If you lack content, set a height on that table cell.

5) Font treatment isn't consistent either throughout the site.

Other than that, the site, to me, looks good.

'hope this helps.
