How Lucrative Is Vegetable Farming?
Abdulhakeem says, “It is a lucrative business in the sense that it takes shorter period to mature and also, there are demands for vegetables in the market. It is a lucrative agricultural business, compared with, for instance, cassava that stays a year or more in the ground – enough time and land for three planting seasons in case of vegetables”. A very popular farmer, Mr. Africanfarmer Mogaji, says cucumber, as an example, provides a unique combination of nutrients and that as a result of its demand in Nigeria, trucks of cucumber come in from Benin Republic daily to our markets to try to meet up with the demand. He adds that this is a product that anyone can grow here in Nigeria and start earning cool cash three months later. Mogaji says whatever amount you invest in cucumber, it can be turned around in 60 days with 100 percent profit. On Tomato farming, Mogaji says it is so lucrative that Ghanaians have been coming to Nigeria to tap into the tomato market. He says these Ghanaians and very few Nigerians bring tomatoes from Ghana into Nigeria and that they outsell the Hausa Tomato dealers. He says a box of these Ghana tomatoes is sold for between N20,000 and N30,000 [less than half of what it costs to grow them] and that it takes the traders three days to cross all the borders. “If you produce tomatoes in the south west of Nigeria [about six hours from Lagos] or the northern part of the country [12 hours maximum from Lagos] why can’t you outsell the Ghanaians right here in your own backyard?” Mogaji asks. For those who consider Ghanaian tomatoes as special and would readily come up with all the reasons why tomato cultivation cannot enrich anybody, Mogaji says, “Let me inform you that I plant the same type of tomatoes in Nigeria and package it as if it is coming from Ghana. Anyone can pull this off”. Concerning watemelon, Mogaji says very few products sell as much as watermelons in Nigeria. He adds that he makes over 100 percent turnover on his investment in watemelon alone every three months.

Recruit members of staff

Ensure you mechanise your farm’s processes as much as
possible. You need to employ labourers and a farm manager.
Most farm labourers in Nigeria are from the Republic of Benin and
the Republic of Benin. You can also employ people who live near
your farm.
Never make the mistake of employing those with big qualifications
without experience as your farm manager. I know farm
managers who studied non—agric courses and they are
performing far better than those with advanced degrees in
agronomy. Experience is very important in farming.

Weeding

Weeds can reduce your yield by as much as 98%. Weeds also
harbour pests and diseases. You should ensure that your farm is
weed free.
There are small mechanized weeders you can use to make
weeding very easy for you.

Fertilisation

If your okra farming is based on organic farming principles, you
can use bio-fertilisers, manure, microbial inoculants and humates.
For inorganic farmers, you can use fertilizers like NPK, urea, DAP,
calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate etc. Buy your fertilizers from accredited dealers.

Application of pesticides

This also depends on whether you are an organic okra farmer or
an inorganic okra farmer. There are good organic pesticides and
also good inorganic pesticides.
You just need to decide on the products you want. Most organic

How to do okro farming successfully

Get a fertile farmland

Ensure that your farmland is fertile. If you cannot get a fertile
farmland, you can add manure, microbial inoculants and fertilizers

Farmland preparation
To make good money from okro farming, you need to prepare
your farmland. Farmland preparation involves felling of trees, de-stumping, ploughing, harrowing and ridging etc.
Your soil should be loose with no hard pans. Having ridges can be
very beneficial to your okra crop.
Mechanised farmland preparation is faster and much more
efficient than the use of manual labour especially if your farmland
is big.

Install drip irrigation

I strongly advise you use drip irrigation for your okra farm. With
drip irrigation, you can farm all year round. This is called brain fed
farming. Rain fed farming allows you to farm only when it is
raining. During the rainy season, prices of okra are always very
low and you can experience glut. This can lead to loss if you are
not careful.
With drip irrigation, you can apply fertilizers and other nutrients to
your plants through the emitters of the drip tapes. This process is
called fertigation, it can increase the yield of your crops by
40-200% if done in the right way.
With drip irrigation, you can also significantly increase your okra
plant density without any adverse effect.

Get good okro seeds

A lot of okra seeds sold in Nigeria are expired and not fit for
farming. I advise you get your seeds from accredited seeds
dealers.
Hybrid seeds generally perform better than open pollinated seeds.
However, you should plant the variety of okra eaten by the people
around your farm. I know a number of farmers who planted
varieties of okra Nigerians do not eat. Of course, they recorded
losses.
You can soak your okro seeds in a solution of potassium humate
to increase the germination rate. You can also use biofertilisers and
microbial inoculants to improve the germinate rate.

Buy other farm inputs

Your okra farm will need inputs like fertilizers, pesticides and
herbicides etc. You can use 100% organic inputs or inorganic
inputs. You can also use both organic and inorganic farm inputs.
Ensure you buy your inputs from good farm inputs sellers

Making Powerful Fungicides and Pesticides from Garlic, Ginger and Neem oil.

We will be using fermentation methods to make this powerful organic insecticides.

Materials Needed

1. Ginger
2. Garlic
3. Neem oil
4. Palm wine
5. water (unchlorinated water)

Method

Ginger and Garlic are one of the most amazing organic ingredients to produce fungicides,
do blend equal amount of ginger and garlic separately, of course add water to make it blend well. After blending if you have one liter,
add one liter of palm wine each to the ginger and garlic separately in two containers. Allow this to stay for 24 hours, then add 1kg of brown sugar each to the broth...allow this to stay for 7 days. Strain the two liquids and add one liter of alcohol each to the broth. The alcohol will halt all microbial activities and extract nutrients from the broths. Allow to stay for four days and your broth is ready for use. You can now mix the two broths together...I love the sweet smelling aroma of this mixture.

Uses

Insecticides: When combined with neem oil and hot pepper you have the most potent organic insecticide to battle any pests. Use 1 table spoon for every liter of water for application. Use as folia spray.
Immune booster for Animals. This solution will help with improving the immune system of animals in organic farm significantly.

Fungicides:The curly leaves of tomatoes and downy mildew will be totally eradicated using this mixture by combining it with neem oil, and palm kernel oil. One table spoon each of the garlic ginger mixture, neem oil and palm kernel oil in one liter of soapy water of Native Black Soap will keep you farm secure from fungi, virus and bacteria attack. Trust me, you will be reviving your plants from the dead in no time and smile all the way to the bank with your health intact...which one do you want, destroy your health using chemicals and smile to bank or have your health intact and also smile to the bank...the choice is yours.
