Gunmen attack police patrol, kill officer in Anambra Another police officer with gunshot wound is being attended to in the hospital, a police spokesperson says. byCletus Ukpong March 18, 2021 A police officer has been confirmed dead after some gunmen on Thursday attacked a police patrol team in Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east. The police spokesperson in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES. Mr Tochukwu, a deputy superintendent of police, said the attack occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on a road junction called Okacha in Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state. “The hoodlums numbering over twenty with three Sienna buses and motorcycles engaged the police in a gun-duel which lasted for over 30 mins before reinforcements from the state headquarters, forcing the hoodlums to escape. “As a result, two police operatives sustained gunshot injuries and (were) rushed to the hospital for medical attention where one was confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” the statement said. The commissioner of police in the state visited the scene of the attack, the statement said, adding that the police have launched an investigation into the incident. The latest attack adds to the number of such attacks lately against the police in Nigeria, especially in the South-east and the South-south region. |
TIMELINE: 10 police officers killed, six stations razed in two weeks The attacks on the police occurred in the South-east and South-south regions between February 23 and March 9. byKabir Yusuf March 19, 2021 3 min read At least 10 police officers were killed and six police stations razed in two regions of Nigeria within a two-week period, a PREMIUM TIMES review of newspaper and police reports shows. The attacks occurred in the South-east and South-south regions between February 23 and March 9. The separate attacks, which are yet to be proven to be related, occurred in seven states with Cross River and Imo witnessing the largest number of incidents. The most recent incident occurred on March 9 when gunmen attacked a police station and burnt vehicles in Imo State. The motive behind the attacks is unclear, for now. Also, there is no evidence that the attacks are related although some suspects were arrested after a few of the attacks. Police spokesperson Frank Mba did not respond to several calls and messages seeking comment on the attacks. The police on its Twitter page, however, tagged the perpetrators of one of the “unprovoked” attacks as “hoodlums,” saying they were about 200 people armed with AK47 rifles and machetes. “Dire consequences await any person or group of persons who, under whatever guise, engages in an unwarranted attack on any public property and directs all Command CPs to employ all legally permissible measures to protect lives and property,” the police said while announcing the arrest of some suspects. Also, Irene Ugbo, police spokesperson in Cross River told PREMIUM TIMES that “the information we got was that during the operation (attack by the gunmen), the bad boys would shout one particular thing – IPOB and all that.” RelatedNews Airtel Africa sells part of stake in $2.65 billion mobile money business UEFA Champions League draws (LIVE UPDATES) ‘My son is on Godly mission in gay community’ – Doyin Okupe Dangote Cement announces N273 billion dividend for shareholders When asked if she thought these were coordinated attacks on the police in Cross River State, she said, “We wouldn’t know what these people want because some days ago some of our men were killed in Calabar, and now this one is happening. I think it’s a planned thing, they are up to something which we need to tackle quickly.” If the deadly attacks on the Nigerian police continue, security experts believe, it could complicate the already deteriorating security situation in the country. “There’s a lack of trust between the police and the general public before now,” said a security expert, Timothy Avele. “These new attacks will only widen the gap and lack of trust even more and that will not be good especially for the public in terms of police swift response to criminals activities and how cases are handled.” Dangote adbanner 728x90_2 (1) He also believes that if the police allow this to dampen their operational spirit, they will lose the ability to source intelligence from the public. “The solution rests with the police to restore and rebuild the trust between them and the public. After all, they’re working and being paid by the public in the real sense,” Mr Avele said. Meanwhile, Yakubu Uwaidem, a resident of Akwa Ibom, expressed worry over the attacks, saying security should be every person’s business. “Regardless of what some of them are doing that is relatively abnormal; (it) doesn’t warrant citizens to go far destroying police facilities,” Mr Uwaidem said. He added that the police risk their lives to protect Nigerians. “However you look at this act, (it) is condemnable and the consequences are enormous.” ADVERTISEMENT The attacks on police personnel and facilities occur despite Nigeria grappling with several security crises, including a decade-long Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east, banditry in many northern states, as well as kidnappings and perennial clashes between herders and farmers in several parts of the country. Below is the timeline of the recent attacks on police personnel and facilities. TIMELINE February 23 – Two police officers reportedly lost their lives when some unknown gunmen attacked a police station in Aba, Abia State. February 24 – Hoodlums killed a police officer and razed down a patrol vehicle in Ekwulobia in Anambra State. February 25 – Four police officers were killed at MCC in Calabar, Cross River state by gunmen. February 26 – Gunmen razed a police station in Imo State, Nigeria’s South-east, the station that was just renovated after being razed down by hoodlums during the #ENDSARS protests. March 1 – Some gunmen attacked a police station in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and by daylight another attack reportedly occurred at the Iboko Divisional Police Station in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria’s South-east. The Inspector General of Police Abubarka Adamu, has told Igbo leaders to caution the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB and its Eastern Security Network on their activities in the Southeast He warns that freedom will not be achieved through violent means, adding that the emerging trend of killing police men and burning stations will no longer be tolerated The IGP spoke Tuesday at the women’s Development Center in Awka, during the Anambra State security summit. He was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of finance and administration, Joseph Egbunike. But Anambra State traditional rulers, led by Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe told the IGP that they would not be talking about IPOB and ESN when the herders were allowed to carry AK -47 without checkmating them. All the monarchs including Igwe Godwin Ezeilo of Nanka in Orumba North local government area and Igwe Christopher Okpala Akwaeze Anaocha local government area, said herdsmen had taken over their land and were security risks to their subjects including the women. Also, the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, while addressing the security agencies, the monarchs, Town Union presidents, Ohanaeze leaderships and youth said itinerant herdsmen would no longer be allowed into any community in the State. Obiano, said anything about security was number one for his administration, adding that without security, “you are dead on arrival” However, he commended Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Security operatives, the youths and monarchs for the collective efforts in making sure Anambra remained the safest state in the country. He said, “Communal clashes are as dangerous as herdsmen. We are going to organize a census for the herdsmen who operate in our state to know how many they are and they will be meeting with the leadership of every community where they operate. “After the census, we are not going to allow itinerant herdsmen into our state. Any herdsman with gun is a criminal and we will not allow that. “They are the people that kill, rape our women in the society. We are going to position the military, police in Omor, Ayamelum, Orumba areas and other Communities where they cause havoc in the state to curtail their excesses,” Obiano said. But the IGP, who commended Obiano for his support to security agencies in Anambra, said certain things should not be allowed to happen in Anambra. He added that other states should emulate Anambra State on the issue of security, adding that the emerging trend now was killing and burning Police stations in the State, warning that the police would not fold their hands and allow such anarchy. “There are emerging trend in this area, like killing and burning police stations in the state. They go with different names and such things don’t happen in the West. “No freedom movement has ever succeeded through violent means. As stations are burnt, our sons and daughters are being killed and anarchy is brewing. “The security agencies must hunt you anywhere you run to and nobody is talking and that is failure of government, do we allow it to continue in Anambra. “We should take possession of our borders and flash points; we need such intelligence among us. “Those who call themselves IPOB or Eastern Security Network ESN, who are being deceived and misguided, should always consult the elders for directions. And we want to be president, is that how to achieve it? It is a big challenge to Ndigbo. “What are our leaders and intellectuals doing to checkmate the current trend? We are ready to maintain the peace in this state. We are not going to keep quite to allow things go awry,” IGP said https://thenationonlineng.net/igp-to-igbo-leaders-caution-ipob-eastern-security-network/?fbclid=IwAR24v7aXvKkvqDIK42js6bwCP10XhCuH05SWZuiEe78B5-5y0RrbyHrVa4o |
Unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday killed two police officers in Cross River State, Nigeria’s South-south, bringing to six the number of officers killed in the last six days in the state. Four police officers were killed recently, on February 25, in Calabar, by some gunmen. The police spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the latest killing to PREMIUM TIMES , said the attack occurred in Obubra , in the central part of Cross River State. “We lost two of our policemen, one is being hospitalised,” said Ms Ugbo, a deputy superintendent of police. “Early this morning, the CP has deployed men, so our tactical team is there, we are waiting for the outcome of the operation. “The information we got was that during the operation (attack by the gunmen), the bad boys would shout one particular thing – IPOB and all that. This is the latest in a series of attacks against police officers and police facilities lately in Nigeria’s South-east and South-south regions. It is unclear, for now, if the attacks are coordinated or isolated incidents. The police spokesperson in Akwa Ibom State, Odiko MacDon, who confirmed the attack to PREMIUM TIMES, Monday afternoon, said a part of the Essien Udim police station and some old vehicles, which were parked as exhibits at the station, were set on fire by the gunmen. Mr MacDon said the commissioner of police in the state visited the scene of the attack and has ordered an investigation into the incident. Essien Udim has been notorious for cult-related killings and violence. Two police officers were killed about six days ago in the local government area when suspected cultists attacked a police checkpoint in the area. In the neighbouring Cross River State, four police officers were killed on Thursday by gunmen in Calabar, the state capital. The police spokesperson in the state, Irene Ugbo, said the police in the state have been thrown into grief by the incident which she said was “very bitter and ugly.” “The killers would not have a place to hide as the force would fish them out and serve justice on them,” she said. “It is quite unfortunate. We feel really sad. The Command is in mourning over the death of the four officers who lost their lives. “We are investigating the matter and will surely root out the culprits, no matter how far they run or hide. We must get them and that I can assure you,” the police spokesperson said. In Abia State, Nigeria’s South-east, two police stations were attacked in separate incidents last month. The gunmen razed down the stations, killed some officers, and carted away arms and ammunition. Support PREMIUM TIMES' journalism of integrity and credibility Good journalism costs a lot of money. Four police officers were on Thursday killed by gunmen in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria’s South-south. The police spokesperson in the state, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the killing of the officers, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The officers were reportedly killed along MCC Road, Calabar. Their identity and details surrounding the killings are unknown for now. Ms Ugbo, a deputy superintendent of police, said the police in the state have been thrown into grief by the incident which she said was “very bitter and ugly.” “The killers would not have a place to hide as the force would fish them out and serve justice on them,” she said. “It is quite unfortunate. We feel really sad. The Command is in mourning over the death of the four officers who lost their lives. “We are investigating the matter and will surely root out the culprits, no matter how far they run or hide. We must get them and that I can assure you,” the police spokesperson she said. The latest killing brings to five the number of police officers killed in the state in the last three months. An assistant commissioner of police, Egbe Edum, was brutally killed with a machete by some yet-to-be-identified hoodlums in Calabar in December. The slain officer served in the northern part of Nigeria and was on his way to visit his family when he was attacked. The Thursday killing of the four officers underscores the insecurity in Cross River, once a peaceful state and a choice destination for both local and international tourists. In a move to rid the state of crimes, the Cross River State Government recently set up a security outfit called Operation Akpakwu which is made up of the Nigerian Army, the police, and other security agencies. The security outfit has been pulling down buildings, including hotels, linked to crimes in the state. Two police officers were similarly killed about five days ago in Akwa Ibom State, also in the South-south, when suspected cultists attacked a police checkpoint in Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state. Early this month, some gunmen killed a mobile police officer in Warri, Delta State and fled with his rifle. There have also been a series of attacks on police officers and police facilities in Nigeria’s South-east states of Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, and Anambra lately. The Nigerian Army recently recovered the corpse of four of its officers allegedly killed by the pro-Biafra group, IPOB, in Orlu, Imo State. Several Nigerian states are grappling with severe security challenges which has prompted some Nigerians to call for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/445845-four-police-officers-killed-in-calabar-official.html |
