#copied Though not related to the topic but the lessons are profound. The taliban in Afghanistan have now confirmed to BBC world news:
- Women to wear hijab, - Stonings and amputations to continue, - Afghan President has now absconded, - All the girls in uni told to sit home, - All land borders now under Taliban control.
May God be with the people there.
There are huge lessons here for Nigeria.
For people who think that ideological and religious extremism is not such a big deal. Well, Afghanistan is a proof that so much can go wrong in a short time if people hold on to an ideology that is potentially destructive and retrograde.
This whole Afghanistan takeover by the Talibans happened after 20 years of American presence in Afghanistan.
The moment America started to withdraw, the Taliban takeover started and is now fully in force.
Why was it so easy? Because you do NOT win an ideological war with bombs.
The West needs to know- and know now- you can NOT kill an ideology with guns and tanks or by military occupation.
You have to engage ideological war with ideological methods/strategies. Not with an imposition of your own views on the locals.
It has never worked. It never will.
And this is why it is very ridiculous that anybody thinks the Nigerian war against Boko Haram will be won strictly by bombs and guns.
Boko Haram, ISWAP or whatever you call them are ideological warriors. That means you can never win by conventional warfare.
We are in deep shit.
We as Nigerians must deal with our own warfare early on now with ideological strategies - otherwise we will wake up one day in our own version of Afghanistan. Or at least core Northern Nigeria may fall to these poisonous ideologies and ISWAP may easily become the Govt of the day.
There’s a reason the Nigerian Army is compromised. Some soldiers see these terrorists as their “brothers”. Why? Same religion. Same tribe.
How do you think it will be easy for someone to fight/kill someone who he deeply sees as his spiritual “brother” from the same tribe?
We have terrorists and terrorists sympathisers in Govt.
We have senators and cabinet ministers who strongly believe in these extremist ideologies.
How do you fight a “war” against criminals that your own government officials are sympathetic to and considers them as “brothers”?
I pray for Nigeria and I wish us the best. I pray for Afghanistan and I wish them well.
However as Nigerians observing global events, please do NOT think the events of the Taliban Takeover in Afghanistan is impossible” in Nigeria.
It’s only a matter of time. If nothing is done.
So what can we do? Ideological engagement.
The only way forward.
The people who breed this terrorists are usually the emirs, imaams, scholars and religious leaders.
Those are the people teaching these poisonous ideologies. Those are the people you need to engage and appeal to.
You can’t bomb all the emirs and religious scholars. You can’t kill all the imams and alfas
You have to reach out to these people - through the moderate sensible ones among them- and then intellectually engage them.
Remember: you can only kill people. You can NOT kill ideology.
In conclusion: We have a very long way to go.
We either sort out this nasty problem now in Nigeria- or wake up one day in Nigerianistan. A new country where Nigerian Talibans are in charge of government, speech and our daily lives.
The choice is ours to make. God bless Nigeria. - Dr. Olufunmilayo The best lessons learned are those anticipated and thus avoided. I come in peace! |

sonnie10: Youtube is not even a credible source. There is virtually no credible knowledge one cannot find on scholarly-peer reviewed data bases if you know where to look. Even metalwork , metallurgy, fabrication and material technology. Now, some would talk to you but they would talk to you in a subtle, uncivil manner and even make additional attempt to put you and your work down, without any prior provocations. Those are behaviors and culture that continues to persist here. For example, of what need was it to bring back the issue of the contentious doors or post link to a similar metalwork thread? If that is not a subtle aggression, then what is?
The first thing when treating a sore that is in the eyes is to keep pepper faraway. Attitude, disrespect, bulling and insinuations are all unhealthy behaviors. No matter how subtle, they are uncivil and the outcome on the affected individual is emotional distress.
This is a thread where we all come to learn, share experiences and gain one or two things. You may not know it but this thread has inspired many to invest in the future. People have avoided costly construction mistakes because of strategies they found here. These are all possible because of collective inputs from numerous contributors to the thread. The only way to guide this treasured thread is call out any incivility.
Subtly aggressive behavior is worst than an open confrontation and needs to be addressed. If a culture of respect is desired, then openness and healthy discuss must be encouraged. It would be pretentious to act like we don't know when people engage in incivility. Proactive measures must be implemented to intervene. The ways to prevent such occurrence are to create awareness, call them for what they are, and speak out.
The offenders enjoy the game and would continue if not reprimanded, especially if the target is seen as a soft target. They would perpetuate their demeaning act and end it with some silly subtle phrase like "I come in peace" when the reverse is quite obvious. I’m just laughing here though. It doesn’t have to be this way sha. We can handle this by retraining our mind to approach social situations and conflicts in a more positive way. Blur the lines and look for similarities instead of differences. Issokay o! ________ Which group I come dey now? |

Your response was in order.
A month or so ago, on this same thread I had asked to know how people use their money to finance clients project without being hurt. The answer I got was “I don’t not have to explain anything to you “ with an attitude. That is the precedent most have set here ( minus Oga Next) . It has come back to hunt them.
Regarding the door you made which they are still using to spite you, let me know if it’s rejected. I will pay full amount to have them without questions. Do we really want to build a healthy and profitable culture on this forum? We need to address the following as a mature mind: 1. Address the gaps we notice; 2. Encourage all stakeholders to address gaps with each other; 3. Create a culture of openness and accountability. I as a person will respect people more when they talk to me rather than talk about me. Creating a culture of “We” against “Them” is both dated and destructive. If we continue this way, it won’t be long before we create fear in those who have genuine interest in knowing why we do what we do. Then the fear leads to risk aversion which eventually kill innovation. The end result - we keep doing routine because we fear if we ask “We” might be intimidated by the “Them”_______ Is there anything that hasn’t been solved on YouTube? #WeMoveee |

somehow: Security wise, if something is going on at the front of the gate, people on both blind sides can't see (Be it good or bad). A child running across suddenly can be hit by a silly/drunk driver speeding A car coming out of the blind spot without checking can be hit or hit a speeding bike etc.
I know these aren't things that happen all the time, but they can happen. You’re very right on security but all these concerns can be addressed with good planning. __________ I go for a design like this because that spot creates a hidden boundary that triggers a warning tone when local wolves wanders near my house. I have annoying alarms. Also, I want to keep vehicle off the main road as much as possible in my builds. Though this is not a concern for now but I’ve seen people waiting 60 - 120 seconds on the main road for their security guy to open their gate. I’ve also seen people having their gate open directly to a major road years after they’ve complete their build because there’s road expansion/upgrade. Lastly, you’d never know how important it is to have a ample space between your gate and the main road until you need to bring a big truck into a property built in an area with a very small access road. _______ PS: My driveway design is kinda different from the one shared though as it’s on a cornered plot and I have a window on one side of the fence. |

For Learning Purpose.
I grew up in Oke Bola, Ibadan and live in the same street with a professional welder who has been handling the construction of all doors (steel works) in ALL the banks in the Ibadan Central Business District (Dugbe) for over 4 decades now. So I have a first-hand information on how these doors are built and properly insulated.
As a matter of fact, the welder is the only welder working on vault doors for CBN and some other banks in Ibadan as far as I can remember.
________
The cheapest way to insulate a door to eliminate creaky noise is to use Polyurethane Spray Foam to fill the cavities and hollow space in the core of the door. PU is one of the best material for acoustical and thermal insulation.
It’s readily available in the market between N2,500 - N4,000
You can also talk to a refrigerator technician on how to get these foam. It’s the same thing they use for fridge and deep freezers.
_______
There are other options. BRB |

michlins: you mean I should teach you step by step process by which I do my work. It's a trade I spent years learning. If you want a sample, I can make one and send across to you.
I can tell you how I make it and you will tell your welder same and have it done for you. It's not like I patented the process.
Here are what you need to know, the door will be soundproof to a very high extent, the front and back will look exactly the same as two pans will be used instead of one. And it will be a twice heavier than normal door.
Stay safe and enjoy the new week Smiles. Can I share my own way of doing it?m though? There’s no harm in sharing knowledge with others. As a matter of fact, I tell people you become more valuable by adding value to more people everyday. ________ I can tell you there are several people here who wants these type of doors minus the creaking sound. |

KolaShangOne: Oga Brabus..
On one hand, you’re saying economic policies deliberately favor the rich. While this may be true, as we are in a capitalist society, another angle is that the Rich always adjust themselves and find avenues to makes money whatever the policies.
On another hand, you’re pinning it on Dangote - the inflation in the building market.. he’s not responsible for it. That’s my point.
He, as with all other big players, are simply adjusting for inflation.
When cement was 2500, dollar was 350 to 1 naira. That means 6.67$ for a bag.
Now, dollar is 520. Same 6.7$ is now about 3500 in naira.
I used to critic Dangote for bullying smaller companies but now I even pity Him. How can your business grow when inflation eats up all your growth. And if he increases prices, he sells lesser because of the reduced purchasing power of the people. I’m not pinning egbon Dangote o or all the other unknown Dangotes in our economy. Just help me tell him that I know why the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer in modern economies. Both of them are actually living in two different economies, which operate by different rules. One exists in a world where a dollar is a dollar like you’re telling me the dollar value of one bag of cement and iron rods in 2020 and 2021. He will have to work more to afford what he could easily buy 2 years ago. The other lives in a world where a dollar is valued by its future value. He borrows interest free loans from the future to participate in a volatile market. If you know, you know. By the way, they’re in business to make profits. Well done sir! |

Greenarrow01: Like someone said earlier The amount you are billing people for duplex in 2018 and now is different I am talking about the money you Bill not material things
Why have you not yourself stayed stagnat and not increase the bill This is not completely true though. I can share my BOQ for a duplex in 2014 and BOQ for the same in 2020. I’ve done a job here that I had around N4.5m on carcass of a storey building in 2013. That’s almost half the cost of building a duplex in some area now. Even if you’re building 7 flats, I doubt any contractor can hit that figure in today’s economy. As a matter of fact, our costs have gone so low compared to what we used to charge 7 years ago. I can share my documents though to compare our rates 10 years ago and now. More importantly, now that we have too many entrants in the construction industry, you just have to lower your pricing in order to stay competitive. Do you think I’m investing in tools and machinery just to show off? No, na! That’s the only way I can stay competitive and remain relevant in the volatile market. It’s not even now that every customer is looking for ways to save every penny on their projects that one will be talking of hefty price tags. |
