Apple iOS 5 vs Google Android – What Both OSes Have Taught Each Other

So here we go! The stable release of iOS 5 is coming on October 12, as per the announcement just made and so we begin with our usual Android pilgrimages.

Here we have a checklist to put latest Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 head-to-head with Apple’s latest iOS 5.

1. Notifications slider from the top bar ala Android. | Yes, ala Android. A very trademark Android style. No wonder why Android didn’t have this patented.

2. iMessage for messaging across all iOS devices – BBM much? | Okay, no version of Android has this feature integrated, though it has lots of apps such as WhatsApp, Trillion, LiveProfile etc. iOS 5 wins here.

3. Reminders (location-aware) that will bug you when you’re near a place that you need to do something here | Cool thing. Android lacks. Admitted.

4. Twitter integration. | Well, Android had this for no wonder what period of time. I remember I first tweeted a photo from my Photo gallery when I was on the early build of Android Froyo. Sorry iOS, late on this.

5. Newsstand. Distro much? | A new feature, nevertheless! So now iOS users will read news through an integrated news reader called Newsstand, from periodical sources such as The New York Times, GQ, Allure etc. Don’t know if that is something huge, but atleast it’s something new. Appreciated.

6. Lockscreen shortcut to Camera app | HTC Sense 3.0 already has this. Sorry, you’re late here, Apple.

7. Safari updates. The reading list bookmark feature and the browsing sync between iOS devices | Completely new. Big plus, Apple! The stock Android browser doesn’t have this.

8. PC free iOS updates – wirelessly, without a PC | New! Apple wins here. To some extent ’cause they ain’t the actual first, but only to implement it wholly.

9. iCloud. All your data on the cloud and across all your iOS devices, for free | Dropbox wasn’t enough? Well, alright. Android needs to catch up here. Downloading an app once and then whenever you switch a device, it carries to it along with its data (progress in the case of game app) and daily backup, all sounds great.

10. Find My Friends| Scary shit. Those who agree to share their location with their pals will now let them know where they are, on the map! Too late, Apple! Android has it with the name Google Latitude. Sorry.

11. Cards app integrated in iOS 5. User picks the pic, Apple prints it out for them. | Postagram was always there on Android to do that. Yes, Apple has Hallmark to deliver these cards. Good thing! But wait, you have to pay for it, as Apple says! $2.99 for a card in the US, $4.99 in the rest of the world.

12. Game Center will now be like a little social network with friend photos and achievement points | Social network… Ping… Shush!

13. iTunes Match
| Google Music. Enough said.

A very limited bunch of new features with a lot of copying from Android and one from BlackBerry too, the BBM-killer iMessage. Well that’s what a fanboy’s words would be, but to us, it’s equilibrium. Some good new features, some old ones. And yes, Android still has quite a few things that iOS 5 doesn’t, such as,

Going straight to four of your most used/important apps from the lock screen and not just the Camera app – HTC Sense feature
The highly customizable home screens
Widgets, man, widgets – the whole world for Android!
Quick one touch integration with Google Search
The easy tethering (WiFi hotspot)
The 3D interface of Sense 3.0
Pinch on homescreen, to see an overview of all the homescreens – TouchViz 4.0 feature
Pressing of home button on homescreen to see an overview of all the homescreens -HTC Sense 3.0 feature
Live Wallpapers!
Google Wallet!
Swype

Its this kind of thing that is making people like Ghadaffi and dat Syrian guy - Bashar al-Assad hold on tenaciously to power.
What they have just done is to shoot the middle east revolution in the foot and effectively hobble the thing!
And that's the reason the revolution is no longer working, ask Assad whether he'd like the Mubarak treatment?
He will continue to massacre the people until they all give up while the west will continue to hold their di.c.ks in their hands, cos they don't want to commit another faux pas since their useless adventure in Libya is failing.  angry

Politics / Re: Africa Will Not Execute Ghaddafi Arrest Warrant, has ICC Lost Its Legitimacy? by na2day(m): 1:58am On Jul 02, 2011
What ICC - u mean d puppet of d west?
When will Blair and Bush be arrested for war crime for declaring war on Iraq based on lies dat Iraq had WMD?
U guyz should learn how to read btw d lines:
NATO d civilian protector bombed and killed civilians on d other side and there was a public outcry.
Few days later, ICC issued an arrest warrant for Ghaddafi & co. to sway public opinion, days later in direct violation of UN resolution 1970, i.e. no arms for both sides, France went ahead to air drop weapons on bendouin tribesmen who will sell d weapons to anyone wit cash (like boko harams) which may also destabilise other African countries.
When this uprising started, i was rooting for the rebels but now i've changed sides seeing the hypocrisy of the west and the cowardice of the rebels. I hope Ghaddafi wins

All of u complaining of HTC battery problem:
Note dat d problem is basically caused by d HTC Sense overlay, d thing is very heavy, resource and data intensive.
My advice, install a gingerbread stock rom optimised for your device from XDA and u'll be amazed at d new backup time.
GET RID OF HTC SENSE ASAP!

^ ^ ^ ?grin What is difficult there?
if i steal ur phone and its an android, d first thing i will do is to buy a sim, i'll throw away later, wipe d phone and install a custom rom, ur passworded app is bye bye grin
D only foolproof anti-theft is if d app has a NAND MODIFICATION POWER! i.e. even if i wipe and reinstall d OS, d nand will also reinstall d spyware grin

Microsoft's lucrative new revenue stream? Android!

The irony's enough to make your head explode: Microsoft makes more money from Android than it does Windows Phone.
This according to Citi analyst Walter Pritchard, who says $5 from the purchase price of every HTC Android handset sold ends up in Microsoft's pockets.
Evidently, the terms of the patent licensing deal Microsoft negotiated with HTC over its Android offerings
last April included some very lucrative royalties.
Which isn't all that surprising. At the time Microsoft went after HTC, sources close to the company claimed the handset vendor's infringement of its IP was very broad, ranging from the user interface to the guts of the OS itself.
Over at Asymco, Horace Dediu figures HTC has shipped roughly 30 million Android handsets, which works out to about $150 million in Android revenues for Microsoft
Interestingly, HTC may have gotten off easy. Pritchard says Microsoft is looking for even higher royalties from the other Android handset manufacturers it's pursuing. "Our understanding is that Microsoft is looking for a $7.50 to $12.50 per unit license to settle alleged infringement of Microsoft patents," he writes
