Our beloved sinnators, what a lovely bunch!
Quickly passed Death for terrorism! and just as quickly relegated Anti money laundering bill to a backburner, I just love this folks!
Politics › Senate Okays Death For Terrorism! by na2day(op): 7:53am On Feb 18, 2011
The Senate yesterday approved death sentence for terrorists whose acts resulted in the death of Nigerians as it passed the Anti-terrorism Bill 2010. But the anti-money laundering bill failed to scale through as the third reading was shelved till the next legislative day.
President Goodluck Jonathan sent three reminders to the National Assembly, urging members to pass the bill, which was introduced by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
The version passed was a combination of the executive bill and the one sponsored by Senator Anthony Manzo on National Security Enhancement Bill.
In all, the bill recommends a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or death penalty if there is a loss of life in any terrorist act. It also outlaws actions of individuals or groups that can be likened to terrorism, including kidnapping, oil bunkering and piracy and airplane hijacks.
The bill covers possession or use of explosives as well as research into the development of explosives – including biological and chemical – without lawful authority.
Offenders risk a maximum of 10 years imprisonment if they are found guilty of involvement in training potential terrorists, passing or withholding terrorist information, aiding or harbouring terrorist and funding terrorist activities.
The National Security Adviser (NSA) and Inspector-General of Police were mandated to enforce the provisions of the bill when signed into law by the President. The bill also provided that with the approval of the NSA and the Director-General of State Security Services (SSS) could seize and enforce forfeiture of terrorist properties or cash upon conviction of a terrorist or proscription of a terrorist group.

, Queries additional N8.4bn in INEC’s budget
The Senate has queried the difference of N8.4billion in the budget estimate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for 2011 and that of the Federal Government currently before the National Assembly. A thorough vetting of the figures presented to the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega revealed the differences in what was allotted the commission by the Budget Offcie.
The estimate presented by INEC was N51.7 billion, against N45.3 contained in the details presented by President Goodluck Jonathan to the National Assembly. But Jega explained that he had held several meetings with the Budget Office and the Ministry of Finance on the proposal it submitted and was given approval for N51.7 billion. The federal legislature was shocked that Jega said he could not defend the items which made up the N45.3 billion estimates from the Budget Office.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, said the committee could not wish away the difference of about N8.4 billion budget. He also said that the committee could not also unilaterally close the gap between the budgets since the Federal Government’s estimates were based on the availability of funds. Jega was asked to return to the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office to resolve the differences and return to the committee next week Tuesday.
For the April general elections, Jega said that INEC would require 360,000 ad hoc staff as against the 250,000 staff used for the voter registration. Each of the ad hoc staff, he stated, would be paid N10,000 as daily allowance for the three elections as against N5,000 in previous elections, bringing the total cost to N10.8 billion.Jega also told the committee that N1 billion, which was provided in last year’s budget in anticipation of new staff recruitment, was returned to the treasury because the recruitment was put on hold.
INEC, he said, would be paying N324 million to consultants for the recruitment of 4,000 workers this year, noting that the commission current had 12,000 workers.

Samsung Galaxy S II and 10-inch Galaxy Tab II Details Leak

https://betacache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/4/2011/02/xlarge_samsunggalaxys2.jpg

Looks like Samsung is announcing the the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab II at Mobile World Congress this week. The Galaxy S II is expected to rock a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus display, and 1GHz dual-core processor with NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, and 24Mbps HSPA+. The Galaxy Tab II is going to be 10-inches (nice!) and spec'd similarly to the Motorola Xoom. What's most interesting about this Tab II is that it'll be a Google Experience Device, meaning this could be a good one

Why Didn’t Nokia Use Android? Because That Would Be Giving Up

https://betacache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/4/2011/02/xlarge_stephenelopnokiaceo.jpg

By now, you know that Nokia decided to side with Microsoft and Windows Phone 7 instead of Google and Android. Why didn't they want Android? Because Nokia felt that that would be going down without a fight.

Nokia considered three OSes to move to: MeeGo, Android or Windows Phone 7. In talking about Android, Elop admits to its strength but also points out some weaknesses:
"There's something happening there. There's no denying that. Butour sense was differentiation could be a pretty big challenge. The risk for commoditization would increase dramatically."

Nokia knew that it was too late to join the Android party—Android had become a crowded space. Creating a standout Android phone would not only be difficult given the experience of other companies but because it could get lost in the maul of Android phones available. Even Android phone makers would admit that it's hard to stay at the top of the Android power rankings—hell, doesn't it seem like the "best Android phone" only has a lifespan of a month before it gets dethroned? Nokia saw Google eventually getting all the profits as hardware gets commoditized.

And maybe Windows Phone 7 will have those same hardware "issues" as Android but Nokia felt it could differentiate its handsets by dropping in Nokia specific features like their Navteq location-based services. That, they felt, would give them a leg up.

But none of those arguments seem to matter as much as this one: Nokia didn't want to lose the smartphone wars without giving Google and Apple an honest fight. Choosing Android would mean that they'd become a bit player in a two-horse race (Apple vs Google). Choosing Windows Phone means they're hoping and fighting to add another horse. It might be too late and maybe Nokia had to sell their soul, who knows, but I respect any one who goes down swinging.

Same thing i thought when i saw the news. Nokia makes the best hardware but where so adamant on keeping their crappy software (Symbian). Now that they have decided to send symbian to the grave, why settle for less?? Why not go with a trusted solution? (Andriod). I mean no disrespect to Windows phone 7 but i do see what challenge they stand to give either IOS or Andriod.
No mind them jare, its their inability to see the inevitable that will soon do them in!

"NEWS: NOKIA AND MICROSOFT FORM PARTNERSHIP"

Nokia has announced plans to form a "broad strategic partnership" with Microsoft.

The deal would see Nokia use the Windows phone operating system for its smartphones, the company said.

Microsoft's Bing will power Nokia's search services, while Nokia Maps would be a core part of Microsoft's mapping services.

The best solution for Nokia would have been to make Android as well as WP7 products. Their strategy is massively risky, windows brand identity is not very desirable and they have a tiny percentage of the phone market. By being platform agnostic they could benefit from whichever 'ecosystem' happens to be doing well at any given time. I fear this will end quite badly for our Finish friends!

Hmmmmm. Two "out-of-touch has-beens" are getting together to give birth to an exciting range of smartphones in a couple of years time?
That's a long time in Smartphone Land! Apple and Google will have disappeared from sight by then. I think Google summed it up very well: "Two Turkeys do not make an Eagle"

If I was Nokia I'd have spread my wings and like HTC release phones on Android and Microsoft!

Politics › Re: Brain Box Of Nigeria Releases 'Nigerian Tablet PC, Ovim (after Ovim, Abia state) by na2day(m): 10:20am On Feb 11, 2011
The guy 's resume might read like the life time achievements of Leonardo da Vinci,  but the tablet in question does not illustrate any of the purported innovations of d man, dats just a low end android tablet that can be bought on the net for as low as $100.
Ignorance is a bad thing, last year India minister of communication came out to tell d world that they are making the cheapest tablet PC of $35, not long after it was discovered that it was just a Chinese pad, though China is d world's industry but for d fact that d minister touted d pad as an Indian production, people were calling for his head.
We need to leave behind our propensity for glorifying the mundane!

Use ur search button and type "titanium backup " if u're still not getting it, maybe d region u are in is not allowing the download,so I'll have to hack ur marketplace!
To hack, u'll need "market enabler" search XDA and download, its harmless and it will give u power to access more apps from regions round the world!
All u have to do is just open d market enabler, pick any network in US, Germany, or any country u want, longpress, and it'll ask u whether to enable for d particular network, after enabling u can now open the marketplace on ur phone!
U can be in 9ja and enjoy d market place of USA!
Have more fun wit more apps at ur fingertips!

Gbawe:
It really is very sad. Right before our very eyes , and even as we should have known better, Yar Adua suddenly became a better "performer" than everyone else thanks to propaganda . Thi is a man ravaged by chronic illness yet he could not even deliver any progress to the health sector in Katsina!!! Today we are seeing history repeat itself with GEJ and the contribution of many on this thread showing that Nigerians have learnt nothing from the past. They say one cannot keep doing things the same way yet expecting a different outcome. Sadly , some Nigerians don't under the meaning of that saying otherwise we would all be robustly resisting being sold another clueless dummy in the form of Jonathan.
In Greek mythology, there was a king called Sisyphus, he was punished by being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this throughout eternity.
One never cease to wonder whether there is a sisyphean curse on the country!

It never cease to break my heart to see how hopeless the country's situation is looking right now!
Reading some of the posts above and also the reality on ground, its no rocket science to conclude that the country will have to get ready for another sojourn in d wilderness!
Petty squabbles and personal agenda aside, the best bet is for CPC and ACN to come together, and time is no longer on their side, GEJ has flagged off his campaign and we are yet to see anything from the opposition!
May God help us!
