PoliticsRe: Nigerians React To Obasanjo’s Attack On Buhari, Tinubu, Atiku by nabegibeg: 8:06am On Jul 26, 2018

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again sparked controversy online after he listed politicians who failed Nigerians.

DAILY POST reported that Obasanjo speaking in Ibadan listed Atiku Abubakar, former Governors Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Deprieye Alamieseigha, Lucky Igbinedion of Lagos, Bayelsa and Edo states respectively, as well as former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Salisu Buhari as young generation of leaders who failed.

He, however, commended his administration and that of Abacha saying “Abacha, my predecessor, got $750 million. Through our lawyer in Switzerland we recovered $1.25 billion and the lawyer still said there is probably still another $1 billion to be recovered.

“In 1979 we had 20 new ships specially built for Nigeria. When I came back 20 years after, the national shipping line had liquidated.”

Reacting, some Nigerians urged the former president to stop pointing fingers as he was also guilty of failing Nigerians.

Here are some comments reactions below...

@Damasic “You forgot to mention that Obasanjo started digging this soakaway we are all in. He should not point fingers because he is also a culprit.

@Iyassimita “And are you (Obasanjo) the saint and Messiah that took Nigeria to Eldorado?

@Enny_Respect ” Obasanjo is also one of the problems we have in Nigeria, you killed the country from the one.”

@Gbengagold “In all the silliness of the last 48 hours, this has to be the funniest story of all; OBJ just can’t help himself!!

@fajosky “You did worse than this during your time, so please quit the pep talk.”

@jbmomoh “Obasanjo you are a complete disappointment.”

@abefeolowo “Big lie, You are all the same. Nigeria can never be a good country in our generation is not a curse but the truth.”

@Belloinuwa “Obasanjo is actually a lot worse than the adjectives used to describe him. That’s my opinion of him and it’s independent of his criticism of Buhari which means absolutely nothing to me because it’s OBJ doing the criticism. ”

@Osi_Suave “Every time I go to 1004 I remember how Obasanjo illegally sold off peoples homes to his cronies. Despite court orders.

So when he comes and want to play messiah I laugh at the people that fall for his scam.”

@chiefedewor “Obasanjo was a disgrace to the office he occupied. Probably our worst ever PDP President.

@saladinthegreat “Obasanjo for all his ill is the only president that reform the system; banking reform, pension reform, insurance reform, power reform, NHIS, combating corruption and crime through creation of ICPC, EFCC, due process, civil defence etc at least with OBJ u have a sense of a new start.”

@baseus “Dear Nigerians. Here is your real enemy.

PoliticsRe: Security Agencies Lay Siege on NASS as Saraki, Ekweremadu defy Buhari by nabegibeg: 4:41pm On Jul 24, 2018
Babygiwa:
Security Agencies Lay Siege on Nigeria’s Democracy as Saraki, Ekweremadu defy Buhari

In a desperate attempt to ridicule Nigeria’s democracy, officers of The Nigeria Police and EFCC following orders from above disbursed emergency invitation letters to leaders of the Nigerian Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki and Senator Ike Ekweremadu to appear at their offices by 8am and 10am respectively violating the customary 24 hours prior notice standards.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris wrote the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to appear at the office of Nigeria Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja, over the death of 23 people killed in the robbery incident that took place in Offa, Kwara state, in April this year.

The letter was dated Monday the 23rd of July and sent by 8pm at night instructing Dr Saraki to present himself at the IRT offices by 8am the next morning. This was not just an abuse of office by the IGP but a direct violation and disrespect of the office of the Senate President, the 3rd highest office in the land.

Reacting to the disgraceful events, Dr Saraki stated that the invitation to him by the Police over the Offa robbery investigation is a mere afterthought, which is designed to achieve a sinister political purpose. He made an official statement saying that he had it on good authority that the Police had already decided on the suspects to arraign in court in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mohammed U.E. and that the turn around to invite him was a ploy aimed at scoring cheap political points.

Saraki decried the timing of the invitation as it was right before an alleged plan by some Senators and House of Representatives members from leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC). The President of the Senate’s fears were confirmed when Police men allegedly acting on the orders of the IG laid seige on his house at about 6am in the morning despite inviting him to appear by 8am.

In an unexpected but unsurprising turn of events, the home of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ikweremadu was also barricaded by officials of the Department of State Police(DSS) and the EFCC.

The EFCC has sent a letter of invitation to him earlier in the morning asking him to appear in their office by 10am. It would be extremely naive to consider the The timing of the two invitation letters as a mere coincidence. It was obvious to Nigerians who were following that the entire drama was a very weak but desperate plot to stop the planned defections by stopping the sitting of federal representatives of the Nigerian people.

It is not the first time that the exective tried to undermine another arm of Government by using instruments of the state and otherwise independent institutions. You would recall that The DSS attacked several Supreme Court and High court Judges in 2016 in an obvious affront against the Nigerian Judicary.

The disregard for the rule of law  and misuse of state institutions under the Buhari administration is a growing concern for Nigerians as we approach the elections next year.

The anti-corrption fight is turning out to be an attack against political opponents, with the new executive order that seems to target the President’s adversaries, it is quite obvious that Nigeria may slide into a gestapo state before the next elections due to the current administration’s desperation to hold on to power

Nigerians have seen first hand the desperation of President Buhari to hold on to power as the road to 2019 becomes broader, however there is a serious sense of unease around Nigerians as they know that today was just the beginning of acts of desperation that will be thrown into play on the road to 2019.

PoliticsRe: I Remain In APC, Another Senator Included In The Defection List Cries Out by nabegibeg: 4:38pm On Jul 24, 2018
NgeneUkwenu:
The senator representing Oyo South senatorial district, Soji Akanbi, has debunked claims that he defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr Akanbi, while addressing journalists shortly after plenary on Tuesday said he remains ”a bona fide member of the APC”.

Earlier at plenary, Mr Akanbi was mentioned among 14 senators, who indicated their intention of switching allegiance from the APC to the PDP.

Mr Akanbi said his name was wrongly included in the list.

“Initially today, my name was wrongly mentioned in the list of the people that defected to PDP. A point of order was raised. I was able to clear my name that I’ve never been part of defection from APC to PDP. I remain bona fide member of APC.”

He showed journalists the votes and proceedings of the day to confirm his name is not on the list.

“This is the votes and proceedings of Tuesday 24 July 2018 and my name is not listed on the list of defectors. I remain a bona fide, committed, unrepentant member of APC. I’m here to put the record to order.”

He added that his name might have been added to the list of defectors because of the crisis in Oyo APC.

“There is this rumour or speculation when you have ambition, declared or undeclared ambition that you are having crisis in your state with your governor. So, they assumed that having crisis with your governor, automatically (means) you’ll leave the party.

“I am using this medium to say once again that in Oyo State, I don’t have crisis with my governor,” he added.

@POLITICSNGR

A mild drama occurred this morning at the entrance of the House of Representatives as members of the green chamber were seen chanting the names of Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, alongside that of the Deputy Minority Leader, Chukwuka Onyema (PDP, Anambra).

In contrast, however, the lawmakers were making jest of Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) in what appears to be a harbinger of what to expect later in today's primary.

Members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were also seen jubilating in anticipation of a rumored defection of some APC lawmakers who are set to dump the ruling party for the opposition PDP.

PoliticsRe: Kashamu: My Purported Expulsion Cannot Stand by nabegibeg: 9:53pm On Jul 23, 2018
Kavuki:
KASHAMU: MY PURPORTED EXPULSION CANNOT STAND

·         I strongly remain with my people in PDP

My attention has been drawn to the purported decision taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) allegedly expelling me and the other chieftains of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the party.

It is clear from the ill-advised decision that the Prince Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee is lawless and undemocratic. No due process was followed as enshrined in the constitution of the party. Since the initial 30-day suspension lapsed on the 9th of January, 2018, they do not have any right to take any disciplinary action against me. This decision cannot stand because Article 57 (6) of the PDP Constitution says “Any decision taken against a member who has not been informed of the charges against him or has not been given any opportunity of defending himself shall be null and void”.

Besides, there are no less than to two suits challenging my initial suspension. The first is Suit No. FHC/L/ABJ/CS/1254/2017 between Senator Buruji Kashamu Vs. PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, the National Secretary and INEC before the Honourable Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja. PDP should not forget that it also instituted a case against me and other leaders of the party in the South West at the High Court of the Federal Territory in Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/0303/2017 as per the Honourable Justice Valentine Ashi in which the court made an order nullifying and setting aside my purported suspension on the 9th of January, 2018. The court also ordered parties, including PDP “to maintain status quo”. There are also counter-claims in the said suit at the FCT High Court praying the court for “an order restraining the plaintiffs (PDP) by themselves, their agents, servants and privies from taking any disciplinary action against the 1st – 4thdefendants (with me and the authentic Ogun State PDP Chairman, Engr. Adebayo Dayo as the 1st and 4th defendants) on account of any actions and/or conduct or steps taken by them individually and jointly to make the plaintiff abide by its constitution and observe democratic principles in all its dealings with the 1st – 4th defendants.”

Despite all these, if such an irrational decision was allegedly taken, the expulsion cannot stand. It does not have anything to do with me or any of my associates. It is instructive that the Federal High Court as per the Honourable Justice I.N. Buba on the 24th June, 2016, granted an order which the PDP from impeding the functions of the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led Ogun State PDP Exco “until the four years tenure to which they have been elected is spent” (i.e. the State Exco is to remain in office until 2020). Therefore, the purported expulsion cannot stand in the face of the Rule of Law. It is null and void. I and my associates are fully in the PDP whether anybody likes it or not. We will continue to operate with the law as PDP members, senator and exco.

Finally, I urge all Nigerians to watch out for the full story and history of Secondus and what transpired between him and the Adebutus on how they sold an empty shell of the Ogun State PDP structure to the Adebutus.

Signed

Senator Buruji Kashamu

Ogun East Senatorial District

A man has been given the beating of his life after he was caught sleeping with a cow in Kenya. The story was shared by Chalz who wrote...

'Nakuru man offers piece of land after being caught mounting neighbor's cow

- Mwaura said he was lonely and really wanted to quench his urge

- He confessed the cow he was caught with was the fifth he had mounted

- To prevent the neighbors from killing him, he asked for forgiveness and also offered his land as compensation

- Police intervened and rescued him from the wrath of his accusers

A man in Bahati, Nakuru County on Wednesday, July 18, left the tongues of a mob baying for his blood wagging after he openly confessed to have engaged in unnatural acts with at least five cows.

John Mwaura was literally caught pants down with his neighbor's cow after he stealthy gained his way inside a farm to quench his urge'.

TravelRe: Lady Set To Wed In August, Dies In A Fatal Accident In Warri by nabegibeg: 5:45pm On Jul 23, 2018
Lizzysamuel:
A Nigerian lady, Eyitemi Madamedon, who was scheduled to have her wedding in August, has died in a fatal accident in Warri, Delta state.

According to a family member, Eyimofe Pemu, who took to facebook to mourn her, the deceased, Eyitemi who was until her death a staff of DESOPADEC, had just left Shoprite in Warri and was driving home in company of two friends when she lost control and rammed into a parked tanker along NPA express by Nigercat area off Ekpan/Warri road. She died on the spot while her friends lost conciousness and were rushed to the General hospital.

Eyitemi was schdeuled to travel to the US today or tomorrow to shop for her wedding.

Read what her family friend wrote about her death below:

A beautiful leaf from the tree of the future has fallen and it is a great loss to the entire Warri kingdom beyond just the Itsekiri speaking tribe of the Niger Delta: Death is a gift when it comes at old age and a pain when it comes too early, for it is better to lose a parent at a tender age than a parent to lose a child at whatever age. What else could be most disheartening and heartbroken than a parent burying their children who should bury them after a fulfiled life here on earth?

Yesterday Sunday at the hour of about 2am in the morning ushered a sad moment not only to the families of the Madamedon, but for the entire Kingdom of Warri and and beyond when the sad news broke that Miss Eyitemi Madamedon has been involved in a fatal car accident along the NPA express by Nigercat area of Ekpan/Warri on her way from Shoprite.

According to information available, has it that she was in a company of two of her friends all female on her way driving from Shoprite when she lost control of her car and ran into rank tanker truck parked along the road and she died on the spot while the other two friends were on unconscious, for it took the intervention of a mobile police unit that was on patrol who rescued them to general hospital for emergency attention while the remains of Miss Eyitemi was deposited in the mutuary, until her death she was a staff of DESOPADEC Agency.

The saddest thing is that according to information available to me has it that she set to get married in the month of August in which she has already concluded plans to travel to the US today or tomorrow but it unfortunate she has been snatched by death.

May her peaceful and loving soul rest and it is my prayers that God give to her families and friends the strength to bear their great loss ?, but what they should understand is that she is an angel who dwells amongst humans with a purpose to put a smile on the faces of others which is the primary essence of life but it's unfortunate she cannot live amongst human in this sinful world forever. My advice is that we should be prayerful and very careful even though we cannot live forever but to live to a fulfiled and expected end according to wishes of our Creator and not that of man, for the hearts of man is very wicked.

Lastly, we should remember that this world is not our own as we are only passing through to another which is either to heaven or hell, therefore, we should make our days on earth remarkably count for good by bringing meaning to lives of everyone around us. Death is sad but we must remember we are not created to live forever but for a purpose which is beyond living for ourselves and immediate families but for others as well.

I may not have met her in person neither did I know her name before now but from the information gathered she lived a beautiful life by making the lives of others beautifully interesting.

Conclusively, I hope the government of Delta state under the administration of Sen Ifeanyi Okowa through his commissioner for transport (Vincent Uduaghan) and commissioner for works will now see the need to act fast on how to contain bad roads and the irresponsible parking of trucks along the roads which his predecessor (Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan) failed to do as governor of the state for 8yrs? The local government should constitute a sanitation committee with a responsibility to keep our environment clean, safe and secure.

Rest in peace Eyitemi Madamedon.
Charles Eyimofe (Baruch) Pemu.

So what?

Scrabble was expunged from the list of Federation sports approved for participation at the next Sports Festival.

So what?

This is Nigeria where nothing is set, no standards are hallowed, nothing is straight and narrow. Everything is crooked, twisted and twisting.
Truth is, in this land, it will never straighten until it is twisted, bent, contorted, disjointed and scattered. It is our unique way.

So, so what if we deny Scrabble the chance to continue to nurture the mental health and strength of our kids? So what if the only thing Nigeria excels at globally is rubbished? So what if educational tools for the youth is trampled underfoot? So what if another shining light of the nation is blighted?

So what?

Hold your peace people. It is all well for Scrabble to hit the wastebin. Perfectly in order.

TravelRe: Ambode Is Building Pedestrian Bridge At Magodo-Alausa Secretariat Bus-stop by nabegibeg: 5:05pm On Jul 23, 2018
autojosh:
Posterity will remember Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode as one state governor that invested massively in the development and resuscitation of road and mass transit infrastructure in Lago state.

He has built roads, flyovers, pedestrians’ bridges, slip roads, laybys, bus stops, bus terminals, etc.

He is also aggressively working to commence the operation of the very long overdue Lagos metroline.

Indeed, the man – Ambode – has revamped almost every area of road transport and has made mass transit less cumbersome.

Almost every resident of the state have benefitted – one way or the other – from the road reform project of the Ambode administration.

However, a group of Lagos residents are set to further benefit from the Ambode road reform project. They are residents of the Magodo 2-CBD-Alausa-Secretariat axis of the state.

For years, residents of that axis had yearned for a pedestrian bridge to enable pedestrians navigate both sides of the ever busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway section of the area.

In the past, many people have lost their lives there in an attempt to cross the road.

In response to their yearnings, the indefatigable Governor Ambode graciously approved the construction of a pedestrian Bridge at that location.

The pedestrian bridge is designed to link the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, with Magodo Phase 2 gate on CMD Road along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Work on the bridge is currently at the concluding stage.

The Pedestrian Bridge is being constructed by the the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC).

CelebritiesRe: Dewy Oputa: My Parents Accepting I Am Lesbian Was Hard – Charly Boy’s Daughter by nabegibeg: 4:18pm On Jul 22, 2018
made4naijamusic:
It came as a rude shock to Nigerians when Charly Boy’s daughter, Dewy Oputa, revealed on social media that she is a lesbian.

She made this known on Instagram during the week by sharing photos and a video of herself and her girlfriend. While speaking with Sunday Scoop, Dewy said she shared the post because she got tired of hiding and decided it was time to live in her truth.

She said,

“My mission for creating a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer platform is to provide a safe place for youths in the African community. I strive to create an accepting and welcoming community where everyone is free to express themselves and be loved for who they are. I want a place where individuals such as myself can create authentic friendships and thrive as the person they were born to be.”

Dewy, however, admitted that it was not easy for her parents when she revealed her sexuality to them.

“I can’t pinpoint the exact age I found out about my sexuality, but I was much younger. When I came out to my parents, it took them a while to adjust but my happiness comes first. I don’t feel bad about the negative comments my sexuality post has generated. I knew Nigerians would always have negative things to say and I was mentally prepared for it. I’m not here to sway anybody’s point of view; I’m here to bring awareness,” she said.

On whether she nurses any fear about coming to Nigeria considering that there is an anti-gay law in place in the country, the stylist and property management practitioner said,

“To be honest, I do not have any fears. I think there are far more critical issues that are yet to be resolved. So, why should my sexual orientation affect the next man? Nigerians that have a problem with the LGBTQ community need to mind their business and focus on the critical life and death situation at hand. Love has never killed the next man.”

Meanwhile, Charly Boy has come out to support his daughter, Dewy Oputa, after she shared a cozy photo of herself and her lesbian partner on social media.

He told Sunday Scoop that he would always support his daughter irrespective of her choice of a sexual partner. He said,

“She is my daughter, why won’t I support her even if she is whatever she is? My father supported me too. We can argue on moral grounds but we all have our rights to life. I fought for the gay community; so, if my daughter turns out to be this way, I should walk my talk.”

Admitting that he might not like her sexuality personally, he said there was nothing he could do about it since she is an adult. The Area Father stated,

“I have daughters who are married and have children, but she is the only one who has decided to be different. As long as she finds happiness or moves on with her life, I don’t have any problem with it. My father wanted me to be a lawyer and I told him I didn’t want to be a lawyer; I did what made me happy.

“People can be talking based on moral grounds, but we are not in the position to judge. Nigeria is like this because of evil people and we should concentrate on those people; not my daughter’s sexuality.”

Similarly, Charly Boy rubbished the anti-gay law in Nigeria, which imposed a 14-year jail term on any individual found guilty.

“How many people have the law caught? Don’t we have a lot of homosexuals in the Senate or government? We know all these things. They should start with themselves. They shouldn’t be bothered about my child who is enjoying her life. I don’t have problems with anyone’s sexuality as long as they are good human beings. I am not in the same level with most Nigerians; so, my thinking is different,” he said.

PoliticsRe: Governor Bello Condemns Burning Of Dino Melaye's Constituency Projects by nabegibeg: 8:01am On Jul 19, 2018
weIMPORT:
The Kogi State government has condemned the burning of four of Senator Dino Melaye's constituency projects in Lokoja, the state capital by some hoodlums.

Recall that yesterday, two of the secondary schools renovated by Dino Melaye to celebrate his 3rd year in the National Assembly, were vandalized and burnt on Tuesday night. Dino was meant to commission the projects yesterday Wednesday July 18th.

Reacting to the incident, the Director General, Media and Publicity to the state governor, Kingsley Fanwo who spoke on behalf of government during an assessment tour of the burnt facility, said the state government has directed security operatives to fish out the arsonists.

"Irrespective of who is doing the project, the fund is from the government. So whether it is the executive or legislative, such projects should rather be applauded and not destroyed", he said.

The state commissioner for Education, Mrs. Rosemary Osikoya who was amongst the government officials who visited the sites said government will not fold it's arms until the perpetrators were fished out.

"Exams are ongoing and these building is being used since January 2018. We expect that people will respect the sanctity of education. This act is masterminded and not accidental. The building were burnt including the chairs.

If not for some serving Corps members around who tried to put out the flame, it would have been worse than this. We appeal to everybody to collaborate with us in education and not use it as a melting point for political sabotage. This is a dastard act; the state's interest should be paramount rather than the individual political ego", she said.

Dino Melaye is yet to release an official statement reacting to the development. Dino has been on a running battle with the state governor, Yahaya Bello.

EducationRe: UNILAG Seeks Police Intervention In Tackling Sexual Harassment Saga by nabegibeg: 7:55am On Jul 19, 2018
CodeTemplar:
The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has threatened to involve the police to compel Miss Joy Nwanna, the victim in the alleged case of sexual harassment involving one of its lecturers to appear before the investigation committee and substantiate her allegations.Nwanna had accused a Professor of Linguistics at the institution’s Department of English, Prof. Segun Awonusi of sexually harassing her.
The vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe who disclosed this at a briefing gave the identity of the accuser as Miss Joy Nwanna, a former student of the English Department who was enrolled to 200 level through direct entry during 2012/2013 academic session and graduated in 2016.
Prof Ogundipe also appealed to the publisher of ‘Linda Ikeji Blog’, the website that published the semi-nude pictures of the accused to help the university in its investigative efforts by supplying relevant information in her disposal about the source of the news. Already, the vice chancellor said all efforts by the committee to reach Miss Nwanna has failed as all her contact phone numbers obtained from her records were not going through.
Ogundipe said the embattled lecturer had appeared twice before the five-man panel headed by a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Chioma Agonmo and had replied his query in writing. He said; “The panel conducted its investigations and recently submitted its report. Preliminary findings showed that the allegation of sexual harassment was not substantiated by the alleged victim or any other person.
“The preliminary investigations have raised certain questions and issues that need to be investigated further. Investigations are ongoing. The university is making efforts to confirm the authenticity or otherwise of the pictures that were released. We also require Miss Joy Nwanna to come forward to substantiate the allegations.
“To this end, the press and general public are urged to assist the university by impressing it upon the alleged victim to come forward and substantiate her claim. An appeal is also made to Linda Ikeji to convince the victim to appear before the panel and state her side of the story. Ikeji as an alumnus of the university has the right to help in the investigation because the image of the institution is affected.”

The social network has been accused of helping to spur violence in Myanmar, Sri Lanka and India. In recent days and Facebook executives, including founder Mark Zuckerberg, have been adamantly defending its policy of letting fake news live on the platform. On Wednesday (July 18), however, the company announced that it will start to take down some fake news—specifically, content that spark violence and result to physical harm and that includes both written posts and manipulated images and videos. The company (Facebook) has been accused seriously for its role in spreading misinformation that has led to violence in Myanmar and Sri Lanka and lynching of several people.

A reporter Olivia Solon tweeted “At a @facebook Q&A about misinformation. They have announced they’ll delete misinformation that causes real-world harm, but no clarity on what constitutes real-world harm or whether they’ll do this in the US”.

https://techcapon.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/facebook-fake-news-768x492.png

A Facebook spokesperson said,“Reducing the distribution of misinformation—rather than removing it outright—strikes the right balance between free expression and a safe and authentic community, there are certain forms of misinformation that have contributed to physical harm, and we are making a policy change which will enable us to take that type of content down.”

Currently, Facebook bans content that directly calls for violence. But the new policy will now cover fake news that has the potential to stir up physical harm.

BusinessRe: Illegal Deductions: CBN Returns N65bn To Bank Customers by nabegibeg: 7:48am On Jul 19, 2018
Truth234:
The Central Bank of Nigeria says it has recovered over N65bn from commercial banks in the country for wrongful deductions and charges from customers’ deposits and other transactions in the last six years.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr Isaac Okorafor, stated this on Wednesday on the sidelines of a two-day fair with the theme: ‘Promoting Financial Stability and Economic Development’ for stakeholders in Asaba, Delta State.

Okorafor explained that the recovery was made between 2012 and now, stressing that the funds had since been returned to customers, who hitherto complained of wrongful charges and deductions by commercial banks.

“We have recovered and returned to customers over N65bn out of complaints by people over acts of treatment on customers, wrong charges, wrong deductions and others since 2012/2013 when we started,” he said.

He stated that the purpose of the fair was to have a face to face interaction with customers and critical stakeholders in order to understand their challenges and proffer solutions.

Okorafor added that hawking of various denominations of the naira was an offence punishable under the CBN Act of 2005, and warned that the apex bank would not tolerate the breach of its Act, and called on those involved, particularly its staff members, to desist from the practice as they would be dismissed if caught.

He, however, blamed the police for the lack of prosecution of offenders who were caught hawking naira during various raids in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Ibadan and other cities.

He stated, “The CBN is very committed to making sure that people do not hawk the naira, because it is an offence punishable under the CBN Act of 2005. We have made it clear to any of our staff involved in the practice that they will be dismissed.

“We have also made it clear to banks that any of them caught doing it will be severely punished. We are a regulator and not a law enforcement agency. It is the duty of the Nigerian Police to enforce the law. We have collaborated with them at different times.

“We have had raids in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Ibadan and so on, and we will continue to do that, and people have been caught and money confiscated. We are waiting on the police to begin to prosecute those people.”

TravelRe: Mile 2/Apapa Expressway: The Agony Of Lagos Commuters by nabegibeg: 4:52am On Jul 19, 2018
AutoReportNG2:
When you thought you have seen the worst in the city of Lagos then new surprises spring up.

Mile 2 can best be termed a gateway hub to the state, it has lots of access roads that link to various parts of the state, for example, Mile 2 links to Orile Iganmu, Orile links to the Island and Mainland respectively. It also links to the nation's seaport which generates billions to the state. Mile 2 is an important hub as its still same area you will see various automobile companies like GAC, Peugeot and lots more. As interesting as this city is, its a pity that it has one of the worst if not the worst road networks in the state, not only that, its the dirtiest so far expect proven otherwise.

Describing what we saw will be liking writing a Nollywood script for a movie, this road can best be described as where lawlessness reign in its totality. Due to the fact that the king of the road (the trailers) have blocked the axis leading to the road, the danfos and okadas too decide to form a double lane along the second side of the road.

AutoReportNG was in Coconut area, close to Olam factory for a meeting and what we saw was mind-blogging. The roads are nothing to write about, we observed that the roads are pretty new but everywhere was flooded, workers and residents in that area rely on bikes as tankers and trailers have blocked the only available section of the road, everywhere was blocked right from LaCasera factory to the seaport, you can imagine the pains and agony of commuters on that road.

We did a little assessment and also we got to ask from the Okada riders how long the road has been in this shape, one of the riders told us that the road has been abandoned for years as the government will only come a truck to fill some spots and after that, nothing will be heard from them again.

We noticed that since the road is closed to the seaport, a large volume of trailers take this route daily which makes the road to wear out quickly.

As we are touring the road, we noticed that the Federal Government has awarded a palliative contract to Segulat Nigeria Limited to put the place in order at least pending when the real work will start, but we are amazed to see the company come to site with only a few workers about 5 of them and they came with just one tractor.

It will be recalled that this road was reconstructed in 2012/2013 during the era of Mr. Babatunde Fashola administration but it seems our maintenance culture is knocking back at us again.

As we embark on this sad tour, we can't but ask the resident and those working around how they were to cope with the trailers, the bad roads and especially the hike in transportation.

We appeal to the minister of works and housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to please look into this road as it has caused lots of hardship for the people, cars dared not pass this route expect you are willing to use it as a scrap.

These are some pictures we are able to gather in this area.
