5. MY NIGHT PATROL NIGHTMARE I had travelled round the N/east in the night before, but often with many people, special preparations and reasonable security. But one day, I decided on my own, to join a "real" nighttime fighting patrol, no big names, just frontline soldiers. I was excited- It had been an interesting day. I'd been through Gubio-Damasak down to the Walada border between Nigeria-Niger. The return leg would be a night patrol. I'd seen villages, spoken to IDPs, visited military formations, seen an artillery operation, taken pictures, and generally had a great time... It was when we set off that reality dawned on me. We were surrounded by thick woods. There were several ambush points, and the soldiers would shoot when we approached there. My truck had a heavy mounted gun. When the shots rang out, it was like they were shooting from inside my head. I crouched in my seat, mouth dry, heart thumping. I counted every single second. What the hell am I doing here? What if we actually make contact, and this is enemy fire? I'm gone o!! Then I thought of the soldiers riding at the back, barely protected with helmets/vests that could be destroyed with sharp ammo. Why were they using so many lightskin vehicles? How can they even sit there? This is suicide. We need more Armoured fighting vehicles. My heart is shaking. We are driving blind, no lights. I cant' put on my phone. My driver is busy playing music. The melody contrasts with the bullet sounds. How long before we get back? One hour. I swallow saliva. My colleague is silent. He's a married man, I think of his wife, what will I tell her if anything happens to him? He was reluctant when I told him this would be a "just us" trip. What if he was right? I think of the soldiers again. You guys are trying, is all I imagine. Finally, the lights of home appear. But wait, we can't even get entrance immediately. They have to confirm that no enemy followed us. It's the longest five-minute manoeuvre and then the gates open for us. I am relieved. I promise myself I will be taking a long break after this. I've known before but more than ever, I understand that confidence is not enough. Bravery is not enough, skill is not enough. Troops need better equipment, better support. ~ @bendauji

4. SILENT GRAVES The rows of graves at the cemetery in Maiduguri tell a tale of the blood of men shed in the fight against insurgency. At the entrance is a small vault, on its walls are the names of those who have died since the COIN began. The list is long. Inside, each grave has -an info tombstone. I keep seeing COD: GSW. What does it mean, I ask the cemetery keeper. It’s Cause of Death:Gunshot Wounds. That’s what killed many of them here. Others are IED explosion, very few of natural causes. The cemetery keeper knows something about almost everyone here. When soldiers enter here to bury their dead, it’s a sober moment. They stare at names of friends, fellow fighters. Many wonder if one day soon, a tombstone here will carry their name, and what will be the cause of death.

I have always maintain that the best way to counter these killer herdsmen is to attack them from the air. The use of Mi-35M attack helicopter in this operation is welcome but then the FG should look into procuring Light Weight Utility Multi-Role attack helicopters like the Aerospatiale SA342 Gazelle for Killer Herdsmen, while the Mi-35M which is Heavyweight Utility Gunship should be exclusively reserved for Boko Haram.

Different planes for different purposes. F-35: For Strike B2: For Strategic Bomber Su35: for Air Superiority The Super Tucano is not a WW2 antique, but a very modern Fourth Generation combat aircraft ideal for Counter Insurgency operations. Even the American are presently running trials for a new light Combat Air Support CAS aircraft in place of the A-10 Warthog. Of the 3 aircrafts being considered, the Super Tucano is one. |

unknownsolja:CHIEF OF THE AIR STAFF FETES FRONTLINE TROOPS IN NORTHEAST Frontline personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) currently serving in the Northeast and visiting members of their families have been treated to a special lunch by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on 1 April 2018, in celebration of the Easter festivities. The CAS, who was represented at the occasion by the Commander Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Idi Lubo, commended the contributions of personnel towards prosecuting the fight against insurgency in the country and urged them not to rest on their oars. He said that although a lot of success had been recorded in the fight against Boko Haram Terrorists, the personnel needed to put more effort towards completely eradicating the menace. The representative of the CAS later had lunch with the other NAF frontline personnel serving in Yola. At Yola, AVM Lubo thanked Air Marshal Abubakar for the kind gesture of facilitating the lunch. Addressing the troops after the lunch, the representative of the CAS commended the troops for their relentless efforts and sacrifices, which had greatly degraded the capability of the insurgents. He equally tasked the troops to redouble their efforts to ensure that the entire country, and the Northeast Region in particular, become a safer place for Nigerians. AVM Lubo later presented the award of the Best Officer of the Quarter to Group Captain Samuel Eyoma, who is the Head of the Data Collection and Analysis Team in the Tactical Operation Centre. He then encouraged the Senior Officer to remain focused and diligent in the discharge of his duties. Likewise, he charged other personnel to emulate those qualities that won Group Captain Eyoma the award. The representative of the CAS also seized the opportunity to commission some projects at 103 Strike Group, aimed at enhancing the protection of NAF critical assets in NAF Base Yola. The idea behind the special lunch with NAF frontline personnel, which has become a tradition since Air Marshal Abubakar became the CAS, is to sustain their morale towards enhancing operational effectiveness.
