Politics › FG Receives Report On Corruption Torture In Nigerian Correctional Centre by NaijaCover(op): 8:17am On Jun 04 |
FG receives report on alleged corruption, torture in Nigerian correctional centres The Federal Government has received the report of an independent investigative panel set up to examine allegations of corruption, abuse of power, torture and other forms of misconduct within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The development was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement posted on his official page.
According to the minister, the panel, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, concluded its assignment after 18 months of investigation following its inauguration in November 2024.
Tunji-Ojo said the findings of the panel would serve as a guide for reforms aimed at improving correctional facilities across the country.
“The findings will serve as a strong foundation for transforming our correctional facilities from mere places of incarceration into true centres of rehabilitation, reformation, restoration and reintegration,” he stated.
The minister also highlighted ongoing rehabilitation programmes within correctional centres, noting that the number of inmates who returned to custody after release had reduced significantly in recent years.
According to him, the number of recorded cases of recidivism dropped from 11,616 inmates in 2023 to 1,382 inmates in 2025.
He further disclosed that 62 inmates are currently pursuing postgraduate studies, while 261 are enrolled in undergraduate programmes. He added that 1,125 inmates are engaged in ongoing educational studies, while 9,582 others are participating in vocational and skills acquisition programmes.
“As a government, we are committed to ensuring that no Nigerian, whether free or in custody, is left behind,” the minister said.
Tunji-Ojo stated that the government would move towards implementing the panel’s recommendations through monitoring and evaluation frameworks designed to strengthen correctional administration.
“Our goal is clear. Never again should our correctional centres be associated with dehumanisation, corruption, or discrimination,” he added. Source: https://dailypost.ng/2026/06/04/fg-receives-report-on-alleged-corruption-torture-in-nigerian-correctional-centres/

Politics › Electricity: NERC Approves Special Compensation For Band A Customers by NaijaCover(op): 8:11am On Jun 04 |
BREAKING: Electricity: NERC approves special compensation for Band A customers The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has approved a special compensation package for eligible Band A electricity customers affected by power supply shortfalls caused by grid generation constraints between February and March 2026.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the commission said the directive became necessary following significant generation shortages across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, which hindered Distribution Companies, DisCos, from delivering the committed service levels to some Band A customers.
According to NERC, the shortfalls were largely caused by inadequate gas supply and the vandalism of critical gas and transmission infrastructure, factors beyond the direct control of the DisCos.
The commission said the compensation scheme covers the period from February to March 2026.
Under the directive, Band A feeders that recorded an average daily supply of between 18 and 20 hours will continue to be compensated under the existing framework contained in Addendum No. NERC/2024/003 for both Maximum Demand (MD) and Non-Maximum Demand (Non-MD) customers.
For Band A feeders that received less than 18 hours of electricity supply, NERC said the affected feeders would not be downgraded during the covered period. Instead, eligible Non-MD customers will receive compensation equivalent to 20 per cent of the approved February 2026 energy cap applicable to their feeders, while MD customers will receive compensation equivalent to 20 per cent of the average energy billed per MD customer in February 2026.
The commission stated that prepaid customers will receive the compensation through token credits, while postpaid customers will benefit through bill adjustments.
NERC directed that compensation for February 2026 must be completed by May 31, 2026, while compensation for March 2026 must be implemented no later than June 30, 2026.
It also barred DisCos from offsetting compensation credits against any existing customer debts and directed them to clearly inform customers of the value and period of compensation received.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting electricity consumers while ensuring the stability and sustainability of the electricity market.
It added that it would continue to monitor implementation and verify compliance by DisCos to ensure all eligible customers receive the compensation due to them. Source: https://dailypost.ng/2026/06/04/electricity-nerc-approves-special-compensation-for-band-a-customers/

Crime › Sarah Ojodomo Idoko, Kogi University Student Found Dead by NaijaCover(op): 7:40am On Jun 04 |
The lifeless body of a final-year female student of the Federal University Lokoja has been discovered along the Felele–Lokoja Road in Kogi State.
The deceased, identified as Sarah Ojodomo Idoko, was a final-year student of the Federal University Lokoja. Her body was reportedly found on Saturday night near the Crusher area along the busy Felele axis after she was allegedly dumped there by unknown assailants.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that a vehicle was seen stopping briefly near the location at about 8 p.m. before speeding away. Shortly afterwards, passers-by reportedly discovered the victim’s body by the roadside and alerted authorities.
Initial reports suggested that Sarah was a student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, after an identity card bearing her name and academic details was recovered at the scene.
The card indicated that she was enrolled in the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in the Department of Office Technology Management for the 2024/2025 academic session.
However, the Kogi State Police Command later clarified that the deceased was actually a student of the Federal University Lokoja.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, said investigations had commenced.
He noted that the police were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and track down those responsible.
According to the police commissioner, details of the investigation would be made public at the appropriate time, while assuring residents that the command remains committed to ensuring justice for the deceased.
The tragic death of Sarah Ojodomo Idoko has once again raised concerns about the safety and security of students and residents along the Felele corridor, a major gateway to Lokoja that has witnessed several security-related incidents in recent years.
Meanwhile, the Association of Nigeria Female Students (ANFS), Kogi State Chapter, described the killing as cruel, unfortunate, and unacceptable.
In a statement issued by its State Coordinator, Comrade Celina Ojoniko James, the association expressed deep sorrow over the loss and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
The group also urged government authorities and security agencies to strengthen safety measures around campuses and student communities to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Source: https://tribuneonlineng.com/final-year-female-varsity-student-found-dead-in-kogi/amp/
