Properties › Bayelsa Fire Kills 11-Year-Old Child by NaijaCover(op): 8:33am On Jan 02 |
A residential fire claimed the life of an 11-Year-Old child on New Year’s Day in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident was among several fire outbreaks recorded across parts of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos, Imo, Gombe, Kwara and Bayelsa states.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesman of the Federal Fire Service, Paul Abraham.
According to him, Bayelsa State recorded a tragic incident in Yenagoa where a residential fire resulted in the death of a child. He added that property valued at about N10m was salvaged, while losses were estimated at N20m.
“In Yenagoa, firefighters responded to a residential fire involving a wooden structure. Although property worth about N10m was saved, losses were estimated at N20m. Sadly, the incident claimed the life of an 11-year-old child, with preliminary findings indicating the fire was caused by a candle left unattended,” he said.
According to the statement, a fire also broke out at Cake Hot Restaurant in River Plate Park, Wuse, shortly after midnight.
He said firefighters, working with the FCT Fire Service, contained the blaze, preventing a major disaster in the busy recreational area.
According to him, property valued at approximately N1.5bn was saved, while losses were estimated at N500m.
The statement partly read, “Shortly after midnight, at 00:23 hrs on January 1, firefighters were mobilised to a fire outbreak at Cake Hot Restaurant, within River Plate Park, Wuse, Abuja. Crews arrived promptly and, in joint efforts with the FCT Fire Service, successfully contained the blaze, preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster in the busy recreational area.
“While a section of the garden was affected, no lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. Property valued at approximately N1.5bn was saved, with losses estimated at N500m.
“Preliminary findings linked the incident to objects thrown during New Year celebrations, reinforcing long-standing warnings against the use of fireworks.”
Abraham said in Lagos, Imo, Gombe, and Kwara, firefighters responded to several incidents, preventing further escalation and minimising property damage.
He said Controller General Adeyemi expressed sympathy to victims of the fires and reiterated the need for Nigerians to adhere to fire safety precautions, particularly during the harmattan season.
He urged citizens to switch off and unplug electrical appliances when not in use, avoid fireworks and open flames indoors, and report fires immediately.
“From Abuja to Yenagoa, fire can break out in seconds. But with vigilance and adherence to basic safety measures, many of these incidents are preventable. Lives and livelihoods must always come before celebrations,” Adeyemi added.
He said the rapid nationwide response of firefighters demonstrates a service committed to readiness and public safety, as the new year begins with a stark reminder of the hazards posed by fire.
PUNCH Metro reports that the directive from Controller General Olumode Adeyemi that no firefighter should proceed on holiday or leave throughout the festive period ensured that crews were immediately available to respond to multiple emergencies. Crime › Gunmen Abduct Another Kwara Monarch by NaijaCover(op): 6:22am On Jan 02 |
The Aniwo 1 of the Aafin community in the Ile-Ire District of the Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, Oba Simeon Olaonipekun, and one of his sons, Olaolu, who is currently observing the National Youth Service Corps, have reportedly been kidnapped following a violent attack on the palace.
The incident comes less than two months after the abduction of the Ojibara of Bayagan-Ile from his home in the same Ifelodun LGA.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the attack on Olaonipekun occurred late on New Year’s Eve when about eight gunmen allegedly stormed the palace around 8 p.m., firing sporadically and demanding to see the monarch and his wife.
An insider who was within the palace premises during the attack told PUNCH Metro via telephone on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter that panic ensued as the assailants opened fire.
“Around 8 p.m., I noticed some strange movements outside and immediately alerted those inside. We started locking all the doors and switching off the inner lights, but when they realised what we were doing, they began shooting sporadically,” the source said.
The source said the gunmen forced their way into the palace by breaking down the door with their guns and demanded to see the Oba.
“They were about eight in number; I saw them from where I was hiding. They used their guns to break down the door, gained entrance and asked for Kabiesi, and he came out.
“They were also asking for his wife, but she had already been hit in the arm by a bullet during their attempt to gain entrance.
“The assailants also seized one of the monarch’s sons who came out from hiding with the Olori (queen),” the source added.
“We were about 10 people in the palace at the time, having come to spend the holiday with Kabiesi. Everyone was hiding during the incident.
“One of the sons who was with the Olori came out to avoid casualties as they were shooting and breaking down doors,” the source explained.
The source added that the leader of the attackers spoke fluent English and appeared to be specifically targeting the monarch and his wife.
“The leader of the kidnappers spoke good English. The only people they asked for were Kabiesi and his wife. After they left, we quickly took the Olori to the hospital that same night,” he said.
He further disclosed that the town’s vigilante group could not repel the attackers because only two members were on duty at the time.
“The vigilantes could not do much because only two of them were on duty, and they could not match the firepower of the assailants. We have not heard anything from the kidnappers since they left with the Oba and his son. We are appealing to the government and security agencies to come to our aid,” he said.
The source also revealed that the incident was reported to police divisions in the area on the night of the attack.
“When we left Aafin that night, we reported at the Owu-Isin Divisional Police Station. On getting to Ijara-Isin, we also informed the police there. The joint local security network at Ikosin and the Kabiesi of Oke-Aba were equally informed,” he said.
When contacted on Thursday, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the command was aware of the incident but that details were still being collated.
“I will get in touch with you immediately once I have detailed information about the incident,” she said.
The reported abduction comes amid a disturbing rise in insecurity in Kwara State, particularly in Ifelodun and other rural communities.
In late November, bandits abducted the Ojibara of Bayagan-Ile, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, from his farm in the same local government area, sparking fear and condemnation across the state.
The monarch was held in captivity for weeks before being released following community-led negotiations and the payment of a substantial ransom.
Security analysts say the increasing frequency of kidnappings, attacks on worshippers and assaults on rural leaders points to a growing escalation of banditry and criminal activity in forest-border communities of Kwara State.
Recent data indicate scores of abductions and killings linked to armed groups operating along the state’s borders with Niger and Kogi states, as well as internal flashpoints in Ifelodun, Patigi, Edu, Ekiti, Isin and other local government areas. Business › New ₦50 Transfer Charge Quietly Set To Begin January 1 by NaijaCover(op): 11:12am On Dec 27, 2025 |
A new charge structure on electronic transfers is set to take effect on January 1, according to preliminary system adjustments observed across several banking platforms ahead of the new year.
The update introduces a ₦50 stamp duty on electronic money transfers above ₦10,000 — a government-imposed levy separate from the standard bank transaction fees customers already pay. The existing bank charges remain unchanged, meaning Nigerians will now pay both their regular bank fees and the additional ₦50 government stamp duty on qualifying transfers.
In a major shift, the ₦50 levy that was previously paid by receivers will now be paid by senders.
This means every sender transferring above ₦10,000 will bear the full cost of the stamp duty, in addition to the normal transfer fees charged by their bank.
The new levy applies only to transfers above ₦10,000 and will now be deducted per transaction.
Transfers below ₦10,000 remain exempt, as do transfers between accounts owned by the same individual within the same bank.
However, for millions of Nigerians who rely on frequent, small-value transfers for daily survival, this additional government charge — on top of existing banking costs — is poised to strain households already operating on thin margins.
The quiet implementation has raised growing concern among consumers who have noticed a steady rise in transaction-related charges in recent months. With January historically being one of the toughest financial periods for households, marked by school fees, rent renewals, food inflation, and post-holiday expense, many are questioning the timing and the apparent lack of public communication about a change that directly affects everyday financial activity.
Digital transfers remain one of the most essential tools in daily Nigerian life. From business settlements and informal trade transactions to family support and emergency needs, most citizens depend on repeated electronic transfers rather than large, one-off payments. With more than 70% of transfers falling below ₦20,000, the cumulative impact of the ₦50 levy, when added to existing bank fees, is expected to significantly increase monthly transaction costs for individuals and small businesses alike.
For many Nigerians, the concern extends beyond the levy itself. The broader pattern of rising financial pressure has eroded household resilience over time. Food prices continue to climb, transportation costs remain high, incomes stagnate, and various service fees pile up quietly in the background. Introducing a government stamp duty at the start of the year, and doing so with limited awareness, has strengthened fears that more cost-heavy policies may be introduced in 2026 without adequate public communication.
Questions continue to mount. Why is such a significant cost being quietly introduced at the start of the year? Why was there no widespread announcement or public sensitization? And what other policy shifts might be coming that Nigerians have not yet been informed about?
As January 1 approaches, many households are left uncertain and anxious, bracing for yet another financial burden in an economy where every naira already feels stretched beyond its limit.
