EducationStray Bullet Kills Osun Graduate, Taoreed, After NYSC Call-Up by NaijaCover(op): 8:13am On Oct 03, 2025
A fresh graduate of the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, Osun State, identified only as Taoreed, has been confirmed dead.

Taoreed was hit by a stray bullet during a clash between rival cult groups in the community.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, September 23, shortly after Taoreed had collected his National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, call-up letter from the institution.

According to eyewitnesses, the violence began a day earlier, on Monday, September 22, when suspected cultists clashed near the school premises during the signing-out celebration of final-year students.

A student of the institution, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that gunshots were heard during the event, forcing students to flee for safety.

He said, “We were signing out after our exams in the afternoon when we suddenly started hearing gunshots outside the school premises.

“Everyone ran for cover. It was later that we discovered that a final-year student had been killed by cultists. It was a terrible situation.”

The student recalled that a similar incident had occurred the previous year during another sign-out celebration, noting that insecurity had become a recurring problem during such gatherings.

A video showed students running helter-skelter around the school gate as gunfire erupted.

A police source revealed that Taoreed’s death occurred the following day during a reprisal attack along the Ilesa–Esa-Oke Road.

The source explained that the deceased had gone to the school to collect his NYSC call-up letter and was waiting to board a bus home when gunmen suddenly opened fire.

What happened was a reprisal after the final-year student was killed on Monday. The cultists had targeted their rivals in the area where Taoreed was trying to board a bus.

“They started shooting, and one of the stray bullets hit him. When he heard the gunshots, he ran for safety without realising he had been hit. He was later found in a nearby bush, where he crawled to but was unresponsive
,” the source said.

It was gathered that Taoreed’s NYSC call-up letter was found inside a black cross bag he was carrying at the time of the incident.

When contacted, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the development.

Ojelabi described it as a cult-related clash that claimed two lives.

It was a cult clash. Two students were killed. One died on the spot, and the other died in the hospital.

“Efforts are ongoing to arrest the perpetrators,” Ojelabi stated.

PropertiesFire Guts Office Building In Awka, Anambra by NaijaCover(op): 10:54pm On Sep 28, 2025
A fire outbreak has occurred at a building located at a one-storey building popularly known as the MTN Office, Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

PUNCH Online gathered that the fire, which started in the early hours on Sunday, burned for several minutes before the intervention of the men of the state fire service, who battled to put it out.

Although no casualty was recorded and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the fire was said to have razed the roof of the building as well as a few offices and properties therein and was prevented from further escalating by the firefighters.

An eyewitness near the scene and a resident in the area said, Thick smoke suddenly started from one of the rooms on the first floor of the building and within some minutes turned into fire, it escalated to the roof of the building and other offices.

“It burned for some time before the intervention of the firefighters. The firefighters arrived at the scene at about 3 am and battled the fire for some hours before they eventually put it out.

“The incident created panic around the vicinity, especially for residents nearby, because of the closeness of the houses, as everybody was on red alert and also assisting the firefighters to ensure the situation was under control.”

The Anambra State Fire Service Media and Publicity Unit, led by the state fire chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, who confirmed the development in a statement when contacted on Sunday, said a crew of firefighters, with firefighting equipment, were immediately deployed to the scene after the fire service received a distress call.

Chiketa said, “In the early hours of Sunday, September 28, 2025, at about 3:18 am, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call reporting a fire outbreak at a one-storey building popularly known as the ‘MTN Office’, located at No. 95 Ziks Avenue, by Ogbugbankwa Junction, Awka, in Awka South LGA.

“A crew of firefighters, with firefighting equipment, was immediately deployed to the scene. The fire was swiftly contained, preventing it from spreading further.

“Before it was extinguished, the outbreak affected the roof of the building as well as a few offices and properties therein. The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, as investigations are currently ongoing.

“The firefighting crew successfully completed the operation and withdrew from the scene at about 4:50 am the same day.”

He urged the general public to always switch off all electrical appliances when not in use, avoid overloading electrical sockets and extension boxes, and ensure routine checks on electrical installations in homes, offices, and shops.

“Keep fire extinguishers handy and accessible at all times; report any fire outbreak promptly by calling the fire service emergency lines. Prevention remains the most effective way to avert fire disasters,” Chiketa concluded.

Recall an office building in Lagos, Afriland Towers, was gutted by fire that started from the inverter room in its basement.

Thick smoke spread quickly, trapping workers and forcing some to jump through windows to escape.

At least 10 people lost their lives, including six United Capital Plc staff and four officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.
