The kidnapped senior Anglican cleric, Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala has been freed.

Archbishop Okpala was set free alongside his driver.

He confirmed his freedom in a post on his Facebook page, Thursday morning.

The clergyman simply wrote: “Praise the Lord!”

Hundreds of reactions followed immediately, thanking God for his freedom.

DAILY POST reports that Okpala, a retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, was released one month after he was abducted.

It could be recalled that he went missing on his way to Umuchu, a community in Anambra State for a burial ceremony.

Details of his release are still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, but it is being celebrated on various social media platforms of the Anglican Communion.

One of such platforms is the official Facebook page of St Stephens Anglican Church, Nnewi.

A Reverend Father of the Catholic Church, Michael Abang Obi who returned from officiating at a wedding, has escaped death.

His car exploded as he stopped to render help to local women in his Diocese. The incident happened on New Year’s Eve.

According to eyewitnesses, the car has been completely burnt.

The Reverend Father is the administrator in charge of St Joseph de Worker Parish, Bansara; and Vicar for Priests, Catholic Diocese of Ogoja in Cross River State.

He is said to be the longest-serving vicar in the diocese having spent 25 years coordinating other priests.

Rev Obi said, “I witnessed a wedding at a nearby parish. I drove back to my parish. On entering the parish premises I saw a Rev. Sr. with her group fetching firewood in the school compound. I stopped the car and branched to show them the proper direction to get better firewood.

“As I got back into the car, and was about to drive off, there was an explosion. I was lucky to have the door opened. I am saved. Thanks be to God”.

“This happened yesterday. What else do we say than to return all glory to God the Father, Almighty!”

Another senior priest in the Ogoja diocese, Sir Nandi Bette confirmed the explosion.

Ogun State Police Command said it has arrested two security guards for allegedly setting ablaze a 44-year-old man identified as Basiru Aliu in Agura Sabo, Sagamu area of the State.

This was contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, and obtained by DAILY POST on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the suspects, Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan mistook the victim for a thief while he was helping his employer move his belongings from his former residence to a new site in Ijokun.

Odutola noted that the security guards violently attacked the victim and allegedly set him ablaze.

She disclosed that the incident was reported to the command by the victim’s boss identified as Fatai Ifekoya.

Odutola said “Aliu was reportedly helping his employer, Fatai Ifekoya, move belongings from his former residence to a new site in Ijokun at around 7 a.m. on Monday.

“While carrying out the task early on Monday, Aliu was said to have been violently attacked by Sodiya and Abatan, security guards employed by one of the residents, Kingsley Nwabueze.

“The duo allegedly poured a flammable substance on Aliu and set him on fire, believing he was trying to steal the items he was transporting for his employer,” she said.

Odutola while adding that the suspects had been arrested and would face charges of attempted murder, encouraged locals to report suspicious activity to the police rather than using violence.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 33-Year-Old Man, Obinna Nwigwe, for allegedly shooting his friend, Andrew Philemon, during a heated argument at the Najob Guest House in Bwari.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, describing it as a disturbing case of violent crime.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on Thursday, when police officers responded to a distress call about gunfire.

Adeh said upon arriving at the scene, they found Philemon critically injured from a gunshot wound.

She stated that Nwigwe, armed with a pump-action rifle, claimed the shooting was in self-defence after the argument escalated.

“Police officers swiftly responded to the distress call and arrested Obinna Nwigwe at the scene. A search of his residence later revealed a shocking cache of weapons,” Adeh stated.

The PPRO said other dangerous weapons were recovered from Nwigwe’s residence.

She said, “The search uncovered a cache of weapons, including five Dane guns, one English-made single-barrelled gun, an AK-47 magazine containing 29 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition, four live cartridges, 17 spent cartridges, a bow with arrows, various knives, a sword-stick, a toy gun, a taser, a bulletproof jacket, and multiple sets of police uniforms and boots.”

Adeh added that Philemon is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja, while Nwigwe remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigations.

The FCT police command reiterated its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring the safety of residents. “This case highlights the need for vigilance and the dangers of illegal firearm possession. The suspect will face the full weight of the law,” she stated.

She said the FCT Police Commissioner, Tunji Disu, urged the citizens to participate in maintaining security in the FCT.

“The safety and security of our community rely on the active participation of all citizens. We urge everyone to report any suspicious activities to the police,” the statement quoted Disu as saying.

This Fresh Year, Why Stabbing Over RICE Na?

An unidentified man has been stabbed to death by another in the Ogwanja area of Sapele in Delta State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day, reports said. It was learnt that he was killed following an altercation over rice which did not get.

The deceased had reportedly had an argument with another in the area, leading to a physical fight between them.

The suspect killer, whose name residents of the area have refused to disclose reportedly picked a bottle and stabbed the deceased multiple times.

The deceased bled profusely until the vigilante rushed him to the hospital and abandoned his body there.

The remains of the deceased had been taken to a mortuary.

At the time of this report, the Vigilante has refused to disclose the names of the suspects and that of the deceased.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe is yet to pick up phone calls as well as reply to text messages sent to him to confirm the report.
