Business / WALE ABODERIN: Why I Cry For My Chairman - Chukwuemeka Okereafor by NaijaMagazineO: 3:10pm On Jun 01, 2018
WHO wouldn’t cry at the demise of Wale Aboderin. Well, unless your paths didn’t cross. We called him CHAIRMAN, and he was indeed. It is unbelievable that I am referring to Chairman in the past.

Sometime in 1992/3, as an undergraduate of the University of Ibadan, I used to visit Lagos often, especially weekends. My Lagos mission was simple – work and earn money for surviving in school. I used to come to Lagos to work by serving as a waiter at Lagos parties. You know how parties are thrown all over Lagos during the weekend. I registered with some caterers and event planners as a waiter or usher, and was available for work weekends. I was paid twenty naira (N20) for each party I served. Lucky weekends, one may serve at 4 parties and make about eighty naira (N80).

At one of such parties, a young ‘ajebo-looking’ man walked in. He was unassuming and greeted everyone around. He even greeted the waiters. Mbanu! Not in this clime. ‘Waiters (and their likes) are rejects of the earth, and should be kept at arms length’, but not with my Chairman. Every life matters. I could not help but notice his calm demeanour, his smile and how he made everyone around him important.

I walked up to him to take his order, he interacted with me, he made feel important, not just like an ‘ordinary’ waiter. Not that I felt ordinary, I was a high-scoring undergrad then, but who cares. People judge what they see here and now. Chairman didn’t. If my memory serves me right, Chairman did not eat anything at that party. Yes, we spoke, but he did not order for any food or drink.

At some point during the party, I walked up to him to say that if he didn’t mind, I would like to have a private chat with him. Recalling this incident many years later, Chairman told me that when I approached him, in his heart he simply laughed. He had just returned to Nigeria from England. He had been warned severally to beware of Nigerian scammers who have all sorts of stories to tell in order to defraud you. At that time the notorious 419 was gaining notoriety. Was I a scammer, who wanted to have an aside with him having learnt that he just returned from abroad, he wondered? But, I didn’t know him, his background or where he was coming from. I saw him, and a ‘spirit’ ministered to me to walk up to him and tell him who I am and ask for assistance, simple and short. And I did. And, thank God I did.

Life as an undergraduate at the University of Ibadan was tough. Eating was a miracle. To survive, one had to devise ingenious ways of survival including working at weekends and having a string of girl friends (with no sexual intentions really). Since many girls cooked in school, having these girls almost guaranteed your survival, eating in the evening, as you could pay them a visit, and eat. I designed a roster, so that I didn’t visit any girl too often and became a nuisance. And I was never interested in any sexual relationship with them, because that could jeopardise the friendship, and my dinner. I was a Lagos boy, don’t forget.

Politics / It's More Than The Naira Crashing - Chukwuemeka Okereafor by NaijaMagazineO: 3:37pm On Dec 12, 2017
RECENTLY, I was in a primary school class in England to see how things work. The teacher spoke to the class about the school values and the ‘British Values’. She emphasised that the school values, which should actually be ‘human values’, should be the guiding principles of the pupils. The values of Love, Resilience, Kindness, Collaboration, Integrity, Forgiveness, Friendship, Responsibility, Respect, Excellence and Effort, she told the class, were essential bedrocks in the foundation of any nation. As I listened to her lecture, I could not help but think about my dear country, Nigeria.

The 2015 general elections brought out the worst in not a few Nigerians, to put it mildly. How else can one explain the insults, bad wishes, derogatory words and ill feelings that pervaded the atmosphere? Long-grown friendships were sacrificed on the altar of conflicting views about political parties and candidates. I remember a Facebook post where someone threatened never to speak with certain groups of people if his candidate lost. In that said post he said many unprintable things about the “other camp”. Till date, one is yet to understand what motivated all the ‘volcanic eruptions’, as my semi-schooled carpenter would say.

Career / Important Tips For Conducting Great Field Interviews – Don’ts, Dos And More Dos by NaijaMagazineO: 1:22pm On Nov 03, 2017
CONDUCTING field interviews can be tricky. There is the constant need to balance different variables and factors, some of them completely out of your control. While you may have some measure of control over your reactions to outcomes on the field, you may be completely helpless when the weather decides to ‘play a fast one’, or an interviewee suddenly becomes uncooperative. But you need not panic. Follow these ‘field-tested’ tips on conducting field interviews and enjoy the great returns.

• Thoroughly research your subjects and locations. Do not compromise the need to research your subjects and locations. Get as much briefing as possible on your subjects and locations. What are the cultural and religious sensibilities of your subjects? Are your subjects averse to some colours, slangs, postures, smell and other intangibles? You need to be aware of these. Does the location require special clothing? Do you need to use a veil, or not use a cap? In the event that you need power, does the location provide that opportunity? If not, what is the contingency plan?
• Study and understand the questions you would ask during the interview. You may need to explain the questions to your respondent. It is not considered professional to read out every question you ask the interviewee. And be on top your game to ask follow-up questions that may not be in your original questionnaire, but do not deviate from the core of your questions.
• Ensure that your equipment is ‘ready to go’. Do not forget to get a backup equipment plan should your equipment fail. Technical equipment are notorious for failing in the field. To compound the situation, you may not have a readily available backup outlet once you hit the field. You may be in some distant location that contributes to this dilemma. So, be prepared, like the Boys Scout would say.

Health / Get Up And Live: Sitting A Lot Reduces Life Span, 9 Secrets To Living Longer by NaijaMagazineO: 7:57am On Oct 26, 2017
FROM the booming anti-aging supplement industry to scientists in the lab, everyone wants to know the secrets of a long and healthy — even Google. Just last week, scientists made discoveries related to life-expectancy by studying the blood of a 115-year-old woman, and new research out this week in the prestigious medical journal BMJ reports that light-intensity physical activity every day leads to less disability in old age and a longer, healthier life.

The science behind longevity is continuously emerging. But until researchers figure out how to coax our cells to reverse their steady march toward death, here's a snapshot of what we know now.

Your personality affects how long you'll live. In The Longevity Project, one of the largest studies of its kind that spanned eight decades, Stanford researchers Howard S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin found that conscientiousness beat out all other personality types when it comes to life expectancy. "The qualities of a prudent, persistent, well-organized person, like a scientist-professor — somewhat obsessive and not at all carefree" are the qualities that help lead to a long life.

Politics / Maina Denies Charges Against Him, Exposes Multi-billion Fraud In Service Pension by NaijaMagazineO: 2:22pm On Oct 25, 2017
EMBATTLED former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Mr Abdulrasheed Maina has denied all the accusations of corruption and theft against him.

Speaking with Ordinary Ahmed Isah, the popular radio presenter, and human rights advocate, on the telephone in Abuja, Mr Maina claimed that rather than misappropriate funds, he has helped the federal government save billions of Naira by exposing leakages and monumental fraud in the pension scheme.

According to him, the genesis of his troubles started when he refused to compromise with “others” to defraud the system.

He claimed that investigations by his former team discovered monumental fraud in the Police pension scheme, including about N300million illegal daily deductions and N1billion stolen monthly.

Mr. Maina wondered why the people he reported for the fraud discovered by his team have not been questioned or arrested.

He claimed that the former office he occupied never had a budget appropriated to it to operate.

According to Mr Maina, he had helped the government reclaim and save over N282 billion.

The said money domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was reclaimed under the last PDP administration when current Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was the Governor of CBN and Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was the Minister of Finance.

To silence him, he claimed that there were assassination attempts on his life, including

Politics / One Country, Different Realities: It’s Time To Wake Up – Chukwuemeka Okereafor by NaijaMagazineO: 9:06am On Oct 09, 2017
YESTERDAY, I was “scolded” by my workout accountability partner. Usually, we set out by 6am, walk for about 30 minutes before reaching our outdoor gym where we undergo some tedious workout sessions by a trainer so unforgiving. He never ceases to amuse me with his “chop it like a breakfast” line, which he would always scream when you get tired and want to drop out.

On this yesterday, I was late and kept the group of 3 of us waiting. After I caught up with them along our routine walk route to the gym, I profusely apologised.

For over 3 days (and I hear that I am lucky), we hadn’t electricity. On this fateful yesterday early morning, I woke up to a room filled with energy that only an “Up NEPA” scream can give. I quickly shaved ( I haven’t in 3 days), boiled my drinking water, and charged my power banks drained of all the power mustered in weeks past. I had to attend to other things I needed electricity for.

Politics / Dear God, We Have Started Again - Stanley Chukwuemeka Okereafor by NaijaMagazineO: 9:45am On Sep 18, 2017
DEAR God, we, Nigerians have started again, the people you gave the mandate to make the black race proud.

We have all forgotten, so quickly.

Every man now speaks of tribe and tongue, of kith and kin forgetting that true brotherhood knows no tribe, tongue, kith or kin.

Men, like hungry vermins, are calling for blood, fangs out, we cannot have enough of violence and destruction.

The level of hate and distrust is unbelievable.

Friends, former classmates and colleagues have become strange bedfellows.

Many are calling for 'war' seated in lands of 'peace' thousands of kilometres away.

Instructively, the colour of poverty, want and lack is the same in the North, South, East and West, but we refuse to use the brain so freely given.

Let affliction not arise a second time in this country given as a gift to the black race.

Help us understand that life is short, too short to seek that which divides than binds.

Help my countrymen understand that power belongs to you, and you give it to whom you wish.

Help my countrymen understand that those that oppress us speak the same language irrespective of their perceived differences.

How do we know that our oppressors have dual citizenships and permanent residences of far-away lands?

Give us understanding.

Break the barriers of ethnicity, tribe and religion.

Do not allow us to self-destruct.

If we must not live as one, we must not shed a drop of blood for it.

Have mercy on Nigeria.

Deliver Nigeria from herself, o Lord.

It was gathered that Akuna, who is also known as Orutebe, an indigene of Ogulagha Kingdom in Burutu Local Council of Delta State, had admitted being responsible for his daughter’s pregnancy, after being interrogated by leaders of Ugboroke community, where he resides.

The secret was blown open when neighbours noticed that Elizabeth was showing signs of pregnancy. It was gathered that the girl told those who inquired from her that he had been impregnated by her father, who had had sexual intercourse with her a couple of times.

Food / SURPRISING: List Of Foods Never To Put In The Refrigerator by NaijaMagazineO: 3:44pm On Aug 04, 2017
Bananas
Bananas in the fridge? Because they retain nutrients better outside the fridge, they should never be placed inside the refrigerator. According to Canadian Produce Marketing Association, bananas are better kept on the counter until they ripen. The cold temperatures actually slow down the ripening process of the bananas, while the moisture and darkness of the fridge will only facilitate rotting.

Potatoes
Potato Growers of Alberta all agree; spuds should be placed in a cool, dry and dark space. By reason of the cold temperatures of the fridge, it can turn starch into sugar more rapidly. Because of that, keeping tots out of there is best. It is also recommended that potatoes be removed from plastic or paper bags they may have been placed in. Also, keep them unwashed, as well in a well-ventilated cardboard box.

Onions
Placing your onions inside your refrigerator will eventually end up turning them mouldy and soft. According to the National Onion Association in the U.S, unpeeled onions should be kept out of plastic bags and fridge. One of the reasons for this is because unpeeled onions require and need air exposure for maximum life. If you have peeled an onion though, then you should keep it in the fridge, in a covered container.

Avocados
If you purchased an avocado that’s not ripe, you should not place it in your refrigerator. Since they will need time to ripen, keeping in the cold cooler will deter and impede that process.
