Workers in the Oyo State Public Service on Wednesday began a three-day warning strike over unpaid salaries and withdrawal of promotion by the state government.

The state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Waheed Olojede, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the workers were also protesting some other conditions.

Olojede said that the state Public Service Joint Negotiating Council, comprising the NLC and Trade Union Congress, had been negotiating with the state government over the issues for the past three weeks, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

He said that one of the issues was `technical’ withdrawal of workers’ promotion earlier approved by the state Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, which the beneficiaries enjoyed for few months.

“The promotion was approved by the governor in February 2018, which implementation commenced in March 2018, and a good number of workers started enjoying it.

“To our surprise, by September 2018, the promotion was technically withdrawn by the Oyo State Government, and this led to setting up of a committee to meet the government to explain the reason.

“Other issues are outstanding salaries of workers in local governments and primary schools. They are yet to collect their December 2018 salaries which others have collected.

“In some local governments, workers are owed salaries of three to five months; this is why we said government must do the necessary things to ensure that workers are paid as and when due,’’ Olojede said.

The unionist told NAN that it was necessary for the government to address all the issues.

According to him, a meeting between the committee and the government on Tuesday was inconclusive.

“This led to the declaration of the three-day warning strike. We had earlier notified the government of warning strike.’’

The NLC chairman added that there were crisis in state-owned tertiary institutions.

He said that the institutions were facing one problem or the other and owed salaries and allowances, regretting that the situation had been leading to industrial unrest in the institutions.

The Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) has expressed its readiness to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari in the February general election.

Mr Israel Adeshola, the BCAN National President, disclosed this in an interview with our reporters on Monday in Lagos.

Adeshola said that the association was convinced beyond doubt that the only way to guarantee better future for the country was through good governance and sincere leadership.

“The only way to achieve this is for us to collectively ensure that President Buhari return in 2019.

“It takes patience, sacrifice and honest commitment to rebuild what had been destroyed and that’s what the administration has been doing since it took over the helm of affairs.

“We all know that to destroy is very easy but to build is always not easy.

“The last 16 years of past administration witnessed the destruction of our economy as never before in the history of the country.

“The impunity that pervaded the previous administration greatly undermined the economic growth of the nation.

“There is no doubt that President Buhari is genuinely committed to ensuring that Nigeria regains her place as the giant of Africa both economically and politically,” he said.

The BCAN leader said that the association has advised its members to guide their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) jealously as they crave for the return of the president.

“The decision we make today will determine how good or bad our tomorrow will be,” he added.

Adeshola said that now was the time Nigerian citizens must take that crucial decision of tomorrow to ensure better future for ourselves and coming generations.

According to him, Buhari was committed to bettering the lot of Nigerian citizens through sustainable economic programmes aimed at improving social economic conditions of people.

“One of such programme is the empowerment of small scale businesses for sustainable growth and development where many people have benefited.

“President Buhari does not believe in given you fish but to teach you how to fish by yourself so that you can be self-reliant, those who give you fish today may not give you tomorrow,” he said.

Adeshola said that Buhari return in 2019 would allow him complete the good work he has started by ensuring the quality of life of an average Nigerian and ensure future of unborn generations were secured and protected.

The BCAN president however called for unity and oneness among its members and the electorate to work as a team, collaborate with one another to ensure comprehensive victory for Buhari.

BCAN has mobilized its members and inaugurated its campaign offices in Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Delta, Kogi, Ondo, Kwara, Jigawa and Kaduna States to mobilise support and ensure the re-election Buhari.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate release of Daily Trust staff arrested in Maiduguri by armed soldiers and urged the Nigerian military to end its siege on the newspaper’s offices in Borno, Lagos, and Abuja.

In a statement signed by the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, on Sunday night, the labour union condemned the military siege, saying “no explanation is good enough for this extreme action. It is bizarre and represents repression and violation of press freedom.”

The statement reads in part: “We are in a democracy and the media constitute one of the strong institutions in our democracy.

“The Daily Trust Group represents some of the best traditions in journalism practice. They are neither associated with sensationalism nor some of the darker side of journalism.

“The arrest of its personnel and shutdown of its offices portend evil and represent a throwback to the dark days of the military.

“If the military authorities have issues with the newspaper; even if those issues pertain to national security, there are established channels for dealing with them.

“Accordingly, we urge the military to order the immediate release of the detained staff and reopening of the newspaper office.

“In these frighteningly difficult times, the military need more friends than self-made enemies.”

Labour & Employment Minister Chris Ngige has pleaded with striking varsity teachers to show mercy on students by calling off their strike.

The teachers, under auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), began a nationwide strike since November, last year, over some disagreement between the union and the Federal Government.

Ngige also declared that Federal Government would pay a minimum wage, adding that things were being worked out by the Committee saddled with that responsibility.

Ngige spoke yesterday in Awka, Anambra State capital, in a chat with reporters at the premises of a local radio station, belonging to the state.

The Federal Government and Labour representatives adjourned their meeting till today after a five-hour deliberation last Friday. At the end of the meeting, the minister said substantial progress was made and that all that is left is a final resolution. Ngige said the problems of ASUU were not caused by President Muhammadu Buhari, but were bequeathed to the present administration by the previous governments based on agreements reached in 2009.

He said: “FG will comfortably pay minimum wage, we want to pay it, but there must be balancing because figures were bandied and we are asking Labour to exercise patience.

“I appeal to ASUU and Labour to have mercy on students and be patient. As far as I’m concerned, we have treated Labour well. And they should also know I’m a comrade and that is why I always intervened on matters that concern them.”

Ngige, who narrated how he became Anambra governor in 2003, said some of the things being faced in governance today were same problems that he confronted, yet, he paid salaries and piled pensions without borrowing.

The minister said he was made governor under compulsion, and such made him to stand his ground when the hurricane invaded Anambra State then, adding that the rest was now history.

Ngige said: “What Buhari is doing now is what I did in office as governor in Anambra, which was mainly my offence that brought the problems. So, Buhari is not the architect of salary issue in Nigeria.”
