A commercial motorcyclist has been reportedly crushed to death by a fuel tanker in a community in Ondo state.


A commercial motorcyclist simply identified as Kayode, has died in Ondo.

Kayode was crushed to death by a fuel tanker at Oma Junction, Alagbaka area of Akure, Ondo State capital on Friday.

Local reports show that the incident happened when the fuel tanker which was heading towards Yeoma Plaza was stopped by the traffic warden on duty. The tanker driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the motorcyclist who was approaching the junction, killing him on the spot.

"The tanker was stopped by the traffic warden but the driver claimed he lost control of the vehicle and rammed to the bike man and crushed him. The tanker first dragged the cyclist forward and eventually crushed him before stopping. We tried to rescue him but it was too late because the vehicle was on him.”

The younger brother of the deceased escaped unhurt from the accident but lamented that Kayode got married a couple of weeks ago, while his wife is pregnant.

Angry Okada riders, however, besieged the scene of the accident and descended on the driver of the vehicle. He was quickly rescued by some security operatives who took him away.

Coalition for the Protection of Nigerian Unity has lambasted a group which said former presidential spokesman, Femi Fani-Kayode, was churning out hate speeches and must be arrested.

Idris Abubakar, its Publicity Secretary, in a statement on Sunday advised Initiative to Save Democracy to focus on more pressing national issues than putting up petitions against the former Aviation Minister.

The group also said rather, Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and a presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, should be arrested for the comments against opposition figures.

He said: “We see this as a deliberate act to heat up the already tensed political situation in the country, especially as the campaign for general elections has commenced.

“It is very obvious that “James Akinloye” the acclaimed president of the Initiative to Save Democracy is working with instructions from his paymasters who do not have the interest of peace in Nigeria at heart.

“We are using this medium to warn that any attempt to arrest Chief Femi Fani-Kayode will be met with stiff resistance and could lead to civil unrest.

“We wonder where James Akinloye was when Ms Lauretta Onochie the Presidential aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on social media mentioned that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was as a sponsor of Boko Haram. Where he was in this same country when El Rufai the current Governor of Kaduna state called president Goodluck Jonathan repulsive names and heaped allegations that are not fit to be mentioned in print?

“At this point in our democracy, especially with the General election less than a 100 days from today, we expect the group to live up to it’s name by embarking on voter sensitization/education and admonishing youths to desist from electoral violence instead of writing witch-hunt petitions.

“We advise that their planned peaceful protest calling for the arrest of an innocent elder Statesman in the person of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, should instead be held in demand for free, fair, credible and violent free general elections.”

President Trump plans to attend the Washington funeral of former president George H.W. Bush and is designating next Wednesday a national day of mourning, the White House said Saturday.

Trump, who is traveling here in Argentina for the Group of 20 summit, was notified overnight of Bush’s passing. He is planning to speak by phone on Saturday morning with the late president’s son, former president George W. Bush, to offer his condolences on behalf of himself, first lady Melania Trump and the nation, according to a statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

President Trump and the first lady will attend George H.W. Bush’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral, Sanders said.

“A state funeral is being arranged with all of the accompanying support and honors,” Sanders said.

In addition, she said Trump will designate Wednesday a national day of mourning.

Trump did not attend the last major funeral in Washington, that of former senator John McCain of Arizona. The president had long feuded with McCain and was not welcome at the services, which were attended by former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Trump also did not attend the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush. Melania Trump did attend that service in Texas, as did the Obamas.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 40 by 40 feet containers laden with Tramadol and other dangerous pharmaceutical products worth over N7.3billion.

A large number of the dangerous drugs, NCS said, were imported into the country by some scrupulous importers from India to endanger the health of the nation.

Attempt by the importers to bribe Customs officers with over $400,000 (about N150million), to effect the release of just one container out of the 40 seized, it was gathered, was rebuffed by the officers.

Addressing reporters at the Apapa command of the Service while displaying the dollars yesterday, its Comptroller-General, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), said NCS has also impounded two helicopters that can be used for nefarious activities.

One of the helicopters with registration number SN-BLI, the Customs helmsman said, was intended for export, and was concealed in container number PONU7789246, while the second helicopter, a Cessna 182A, was imported into the country from the United States of America for unknown assignment.

Ali said the first helicopter was falsely declared as 388 bags of cashew nuts, while the second was concealed in container number MRKU 4457663 before they were intercepted by some vigilant and patriotic officers of the command.

Investigation, the CGC said, was ongoing to fish out the owners of the two helicopters. He said three suspects with some Customs officers that were involved in the clearance of some of the containers laden with Tramadol drugs from the port have been arrested.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted to reports in the media that he held a meeting with Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo at his Ota Farm, Ogun State, on Wednesday.

Reports circulated during the week of a meeting between Obasanjo, Osinbajo, and the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

But in a statement signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Friday, the former President said the report was false.

“It is a fact that severally, the former president has dissociated himself from owning any social media account.

“Therefore, it is highly disappointing that such sensitive Twitter post would be allowed to go on air without verification by the African Independent Television (AIT),” the statement stated.

Obasanjo further urged the media to always be professional in discharging their duties and to refrain from creating unnecessary confusion and heating up the polity.

He added, “There was no meeting with the Vice President anywhere. I was at the airport and was informed that he was around in the lounge and out of courtesy; ged pleasantries and I left. That was all.

“The station should have been very professional and not causing confusion and heating up the polity. That I am not operating any social media account should not be strange to a station like AIT, and for that embarrassment, the Vice President and I deserve an apology,” Mr Obasanjo said.

Governor of Lagos state, Akinwumi Ambode, has assured that the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state for the 2019 general elections, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will not abandon pending projects.


Ambode gave this assurance while inaugurating an ultra-modern lecture theatre donated to the Lagos State University (LASU) by businessman and philanthropist, Remi Makanjuola, on Thursday.

According to the Governor, while efforts were on by his administration to complete all the major projects initiated by his administration, Sanwo-Olu would nonetheless complete those ones he was unable to deliver before the expiration of his tenure next year.

“I am so excited about the fact that Mr Sanwo-Olu has actually come out here and he has issued a promissory note and what that means is that we are going to have a government of continuity.

“For whatever structures that we have in LASU right now, and I’m going to also convince our chief negotiator, Dr Wale Babalakin, we are already doing Senate building here, we are doing Students Arcade and we are also doing the library, I hope I will be able to complete and finish them but if I am unable to complete them, I speak on behalf of Mr Sanwo-Olu that he will finish and also do the Staff School.

“We are not campaigning yet but truly that is the spirit of the kind of governance that we bring to Lagos; that is the spirit that we really want to see and then we should be able to show leadership in all spheres of life that we find ourselves,” Ambode said.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday warned the President Muhammadu Buhari government, to “review its policy of releasing so-called ‘repentant’ terrorists”.

In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Atiku bemoaned the level of insecurity in the country.

According to the former vice-president, both Muslim and Christian clerics now officiate funerals more than marriages and child dedication.

Atiku called on the Federal Government to take bold steps to end unnecessary deaths, because he was tired of issuing condolences on such deaths.

He said, “I have been travelling all over Nigeria and I meet with both Muslim and Christian clerics who tell me that in the North East and Middle Belt, they now officiate over more funerals than they do marriages and child dedications. This is heartbreaking and we must do something immediately to change the situation.

“Apart from funding, I advise the Federal Government to review its policy of releasing so-called ‘repentant’ terrorists. To think that the government can de-radicalise these individuals in so short a time is wishful thinking.

“Many people, myself included, think that the upsurge in terror activities coming after the release of such detainees is not coincidental.

“Finally, I urge the National Assembly to suo moto, take action to appropriate funds for our military on a fast-track basis. These are desperate times for Nigeria and desperate times call for dedication to duty of all concerned.

“I am tired of issuing condolences for unnecessary deaths. I prefer to make a difference and prevent unnecessary deaths amongst the gallant men and women of our armed forces and the civilian population they took an oath to protect.”
