NATIONAL Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State were yesterday locked in a fresh spat after the state government allegedly denied APC the use of Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri for the flag-off of its governorship election campaign.

Oshiomhole branded the governor’s action anti-party and derided his style of governance. Although Okorocha is an APC member, he is vehemently opposed to the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma, whose election he has threatened to work against. The governor, who is supporting his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, for the governorship race on the platform of Action Alliance (AA), fired back at Oshiomhole, dismissing the allegation that he denied Uzodinma the use of the stadium as untrue, adding that only Oshiohole could believe it. Okorocha and members of the state cabinet boycotted yesterday’s campaign of APC.

Oshiomhole said: “For the workers who no longer know what a pay day looks like, I bring a message of hope. “When a governor will look at the face of his people and say there is money to do other things but no money to pay those who are working for the government. “I bring a message of hope that appointments into your government will be made on merit and not on family connection. “I bring a message of hope that when we talk of happiness, we will not domesticate it in the hands of a sister; that the happiness of the great people of Imo State will be the primary purpose of government under Senator Hope Uzodinma. “I bring you a message of hope that in constructing buildings and building roads, they will be based on due process. “One contract will not be awarded to three people. If it must be awarded, it must not be awarded to in-laws; it will be awarded to genuine business men and women of Imo State.

“I bring you hope that never again will your governor look at your leaders and abuse them because democracy is about people. “I bring you a message of hope that never again shall we govern on the basis of family connection: whether you know somebody or you don’t know somebody; you married from me, I didn’t marry from you; that shall not be the basis of winning the next election. “I bring you a message of hope that your money will be used to develop Imo land. “And through you, I bring a message of hope to the traditional rulers; that they will be able to preside over their domains without being intimidated by the governor. “I bring you a message of hope that from now on, we will govern in a way that will leave no man in doubt that democracy is government of the people by the people and for the people.

“I want to assure those workers who have been lamenting, those families whose husbands have not been paid for six months to nine months, and I want to assure those pensioners that the bailout money which President Buhari gave to governors, including the governor of Imo State, that was not used for the purpose, that money will be retrieved and our pensioners will smile again. “Never again will a governor of this state look at you in the face and say that your salary depends on when he wants and not when it is due. “Never again will someone use your money to print posters with a President Obama when he is doing the opposite of Obama. “I bring you assurances of hope that you are going to have a governor who will lead you by the power of personal example. “Let me say it without fear of contradiction that those who are printing President Muhammadu Buhari’s posters, putting his face and their own faces because their faces are unknown, their party is unknown and they will put Buhari’s face and put the logo of an unknown party, those ones are fake.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has APC as his party. He is our presidential candidate. President Muhammadu Buhari believes in and has adopted Senator Hope Uzodinma as the APC governorship candidate. “We want real democrats that will accept the will of the people. How can you explain that an APC governor will deny an APC candidate the use of the stadium that is built with tax payers’ money from Imo State?” Switching to pidgin English, Oshiomhole continued: “I hear say yesterday he talk am say he no wan give stadium because when he dey contest against (former governor Ikedi) Ohakim, he talk say Ohakim no give am stadium. So, he too go copy Ohakim. I say e good oh! If you copy who fail exam, you too you never fail? If you copy who fail exam, what will you get? He who copy failure will find failure awaiting him.”

In a swift reaction to Oshiomhole’s allegation, Okorocha, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said: “For those who know Chief Hope Uzodinma very well, they won’t be surprised that he could come up with this false claim on the issue. Only men like Adams Oshiomhole would believe him. “Since Governor Rochas Okorocha became governor in 2011, the Dan Anyiam Stadium has always been made available for all the political parties and candidates to use, not minding the political affiliations.

“The Stadium is the property of Imo people and Chief Uzodinma would not have been denied the opportunity of using the facility for the flag-off of his campaign if he had asked or applied for it. “He never applied to use the stadium, especially when a press release had been issued days before the flag-off of his campaign that the governor had directed that the stadium should be released free to political parties and candidates who would like to use it for their rallies or for other political activities. “As usual, Chief Uzodinma wanted to use the stadium issue to blackmail the governor and to continue to deceive men like Oshiomhole.

“The truth is that Chief Hope Uzodinma cannot raise up to one thousand people, talk more (sic) raising a crowd that would fill the stadium. “He does not have the capacity. He knows his handicaps. Where would Chief Uzodinma get the crowd to fill the Stadium? “Last time, he published a crowd of an event that took place in the north as the crowd that graced his rally when he was named the candidate of the party. And Senator Araraume’s men also used the picture of the same crowd. We exposed them on that. “Men and women of goodwill should ignore Chief Uzodinma’s claim for who he is.”

At least five persons were yesterday killed in two separate accidents on Third Mainland Bridge and Ikeja, Lagos.

Two motorcyclists were said to have died on the spot at the wee hours of Saturday following a head on collusion on the bridge.

It was gathered that one of the motorcycles had two passengers aboard while the other was a dispatch rider.

One of the motorcyclists was said to be riding against traffic on top speed when he rammed into the other killing all four persons on the spot.

The victims were said to have been thrown off the bikes in different directions when they collided such that some of them were crushed by oncoming vehicles.

According to witnesses, one of the victims had his leg chopped off. It was gathered that relatives of the victims evacuated their bodies, while the affected motorcycles were removed by the police.

The other accident occurred yesterday evening at Ikeja after an unlatched container fell on two vehicles killing one person.

It was gathered that the containerised truck which was moving inward Sheraton Hotel road, had flat tyres and suddenly fell on two vehicles – a space bus and a Toyota Avalon car.

As soon as it fell, it was learnt that the container crushed the bus driver and also ignited fire on the vehicle.

According to sources, the bus driver was partially burnt and also crushed.

The driver who was trapped in his burning bus was said to have been evacuated by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) when they arrived the scene.

It was gathered that the driver of the Toyota Avalon sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Contacted, police spokesman Chike Oti said no official report was made on the Third Mainland Bridge accident.

He confirmed that the police saw two motorcycles on the bridge when the report filtered in, adding that detectives have been deployed to mortuaries around to find out if victims of Third Mainland Bridge accident were brought to their facilities.

He said: “No official report was made to that effect. But the report filtered in and so we have commenced investigation. Policemen have been deployed to mortuaries around to find out if accident victims on Third Mainland Bridge were brought there. This is because the relatives of the victims ought to have made official entries at the police station. It is a case of fatal road accident and the families cannot deal with it alone.”

LASEMA confirmed the Ikeja accident to The Nation, adding that investigation into the cause would be conducted by relevant agencies.

However, disaster was averted in Ota, Ogun State, yesterday when a tanker laden with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit lost control on Ilo-Awela, Toll-Gate.

Mr Adekunle Ajibade, the Sango-Ota Zonal Commander of TRACE, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident happened at 4.06p.m.

According to him, the Mack tanker, with registration number FKJ 913XD was heading for Lagos when it lost control due to brake failure and crossed the divider to hit a LT vehicle marked EKY 748 TN.

He said that only the two vehicles were involved in the accident, adding that the driver of the LT was injured.

“A serious disaster that could have claimed so many lives was averted through the intervention of the Almighty God,” he said.

He also said that the injured person had been taken to General Hospital, Sango-Ota, for an intensive treatment.

Ajibade said that TRACE personnel, Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were on ground to control the situation.

He told NAN that the fuel was transloaded into other vehicles.

GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi has said that the National Leader of the ruling All Progressive Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu did not impose the party governorship flagbearer in the 2019 election, Mr Adebayo Adelabu,on him or the state.

Reiterating that it was God’s guidance and leading that resulted in the emergence of the party’s choice, Governor Ajimobi said the opposition party’s flagbearer making the insinuation should be more worried about a non-Yoruba in the person of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who chooses and determined the party’s choice for the election.

This is coming even after the governor also debunked media reports alleging that he got a whopping sum of $10million from the APC governorship candidate as gratis before handing him the party ticket.
The governor spoke at flag-off of the governorship campaign rally at an event which held at the Oke Ado state party secretariat, Ibadan.

The event was largely attended by party leaders, elders, party faithful and candidates for all elective positions, including the governorship flagbearer and his running mate, the three senatorial candidates, 14 House of Representatives candidates and the 33 House of Assembly candidates. The governor also handed over the party’svflag to Adelabu and his running mate, Mr Samuel Egunjobi.

While explaining how the choice of Adelabu was made, the governor insisted that it was God who already predestined the former CBN deputy governor to succeed him but only used him (Ajimobi) and the party leaders to achieve it.
He called on the people to give him the needed support to ensure his emergence, noting that the party’s choice has the required knowledge and wherewithal to take the state to the next level of development.

He also appealed to all other aspirants, who jostled for the ticket with the flagbearer to forgive him and embrace him to achieve success at the polls. He assured them that the party’s flagbearer will deliver and take the state higher.

The governor also stressed that one of the signs that worked in favour of the choice is God’s directive for him to go for the youngest of
all the aspirants when he was in dilemma about who to support for the ticket.

He said: “Before I said Adelabu would be the governor, God spoke to me. And some people said it was Tinubu who told me. Please is Tinubu living in Ibadan with us? Even if Tinubu had even told me, is it not better than Secondus, who is an Igbo man, to tell them who should be their flagbearer?

“You all should know that with all these that we are doing, God is really with us because when we started, what we asked God was that if we will do well, God should help us to get there and if we won’t do well, he shouldn’t allow us to get there. How many politicians can say that? It is almost eight years and you all can see how well we have done.

“Before we came into power, when they tell you someone is an NURTW member, do you stay close to him? How well do you pass through Iwo road and other places around town? Is it not in fear and anxiety? But the story has changed. There is peace and even the NURTW members are now peaceful and gentle people.

“God sees my heart. It is God who made us choose Adelabu. All those who aspired for the ticket, there was nobody among them who was not qualified. We had people with first class and second class in various fields, but the scripture must be fulfilled.

“Among all those who contested for the ticket, God told me that I should pick the youngest person in age and when you look at the bible for the story of David, you will understand better.
“Please, the remaining of you that you contested for the post, I beg you to forgive me. Adelabu did not put himself there, God put him there. He only used us to get there and I assure you, he will not misuse it.”

While assuring on the party’s victory at the forthcoming polls, Governor Ajimobi said the signs had been there for all to see.

Earlier in his address, the state party chairman, Chief Akin Oke, said the party had begun another journey, like “we began in 2011 and at the end of the journey, it was a victory for all our candidates. Today, we are beginning another journey for all our candidates and this journey will also end in victory for all our candidates in 2019. We are sure we will win.”

The wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Chief Bisi Fayemi, says her husband’s administration will restore long held values of the Ekiti people, in addition to fighting poverty and moral decadence.

The governor’s wife gave the assurance in Ado-Ekiti on Friday while delivering a lecture entitled: ‘Reclaiming our Land, Restoring our Values: Beyond Slogan’.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lecture was organised as part of activities marking the 2018 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekitit State Council.

Fayemi expressed optimism that the present administration in the state would introduce policies and programmes that would combat poverty and all forms of social ills.

According to her, many of such challenges crept into Ekiti through the actions of compromising politicians.

In his remarks, NUJ Chairman in the state, Mr Rotimi Ojomoyela, lauded the governor’s wife for the lecture.

He said it would go a long way in repositioning the lives of youths in the state.

The chairman assured that the members of the pen profession in the state would work assiduously to ensure that the present administration realises its set objectives.

NAN reports that the forum afforded Journalists in the state the opportunity to interact on mind boggling issues, especially on coming up with ways to restore the core values of the state beyond slogan.

The exit of former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will not stop the party from winning next year’s governorship election, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin said yesterday.

Lanlehin, who is the party’s governorship candidate, addressed reporters for the first time after the exit of his leader, Ladoja, from ADC to Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) a fortnight ago.

Ladoja dumped ADC for ZLP on claims that members of the Unity Forum, which broke away from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ADC, were imposing candidates on the party.

The former governor had supported Lanlehin to become ADC’s governorship candidate but left him behind.

He said the ADC candidate refused to see reasons why they needed to leave the party for members of the Unity Forum.

Lanlehin defected from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as a serving senator to join Ladoja in Accord (A) party in 2014.

He moved with the former governor to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last year and to ADC in May.

The ADC governorship candidate assured the party faithful that he would defeat the APC candidate, Adebayo Adelabu, in the next year election.

He added: “The struggle to unseat this government is certain. That is the government that must be sent out. And by the grace of God, it will be achieved.”

Lanlehin, who represented Oyo South between 2011 and 2015, said it was certain that Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s tenure will end on May 29, next year, and anyone who wants to continue with his “legacy” would not be accepted by the people of the state.

A 34-year-old estate agent, Sheriff Abiodun, yesterday appeared at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly duping a Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) student, Usman Oloyede, of N75,00.

Abiodun, who lives in Yaba, Lagos, is charged with two counts of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

Prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen said the accused committed the offence on February 15 at 1, Fatai Ade Street, Yaba, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused collected N75, 000 from the complainant, as payment for a room near the main campus.

Nurudeen alleged that the accused gave the complainant the key to the room, but when he went to clean it, he discovered that it was already occupied.

He said the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Chief Magistrate K.B. Ayeye granted the accused N100,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

She ordered that the surety must be employed and must show evidence of one-year tax payment to Lagos State Government. Ayeye adjourned till February 20.

The Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has urged the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos to dismiss the fundamental right suit filed by human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN).

The popular lawyer is challenging the failure of the Federal Government to remove the gridlock on the Apapa-Oshodi expressway.

In his preliminary objection against the suit, Fashola challenged Falana’s locus standi to file the suit.

He argued that Falana had not shown that he suffered over and above other motorists or the people using the road.

The minister contended that the failure to repair the road had not restricted or breached Falana’s freedom of movement.

In a counter-affidavit deposed to by Ayodele Otedola, a litigation clerk in the ministry on behalf of the minister, Fashola contended that the gridlock on the road “is always caused by tanker drivers who normally follow the route to the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) for the purpose of loading and offloading their goods”.

The counter-affidavit stated that the minister’s “effort to clear the road and remove the trailers and tankers has not been easy but that effort has been redoubled to achieve this goal”.

But Falana, in his fundamental right suit, argued that the state of the road constitutes a threat to his life and is a violation of his fundamental right to move freely in Lagos, as guaranteed by sections 33 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and articles 5 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.

He is seeking the following reliefs:

“A declaration that the refusal or failure of the respondents to remove obstructions, repair and maintain the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway is illegal and unconstitutional as it constitutes a threat to the fundamental right to life of the applicant guaranteed by Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act (CAP A9) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

Falana prayed the court for a declaration that the failure or refusal of the respondents to make the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway safe for motorists is illegal and unconstitutional as it violates the applicant’s fundamental right to freedom of movement guaranteed by Section 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and Article 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act (CAP A9) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has notified airlines of the withdrawal of its services to Osubi Airport, Warri, Gombe Airport and Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 (MMA2) over alleged indebtedness.

Arik Air’s Communications Manager, Mr Adebanji Ola, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday to NAN.

The statement read: “In a Notice To Airmen (NOTAM) issued on December 8, FAAN stated that it will be withdrawing Aviation Security, fire fighting and rescue operations from Osubi, Gombe and MMA2 from midnight of Dec. 9.

“Consequently, Arik Air will be suspending its flights to Osubi Airport, Gombe Airport and move Port Harcourt flights out of MMA2 from Dec. 10, until further notice,” Ola said.

He advised Warri passengers to use Benin Airport as while Gombe passengers are to use Bauchi Airport.

“All Arik Air flights to Port Harcourt Airport, Omagwa, will as from the same date operate from Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal One otherwise known as General Aviation Terminal (GAT).

“Arik Air regrets any inconvenience the closure of the three airports may cause its esteemed customers.

“The airline hopes the issue between FAAN and the airport authorities will be resolved soonest,” he said.

26-year-old Mexican model, Vanessa Ponce de Leon, was crowned the 68th Miss World at a glitzy event on the tropical Chinese island of Hainan on Saturday.

Vanessa has a degree in international business, volunteers for "Migrantes en el Camino" and is on the board of directors of a rehab centre for girls.

First runner up was Thailand's Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan, a 20-year-old studying business administration. Miss Belarus, Maria Vasilevich, Miss Jamaica, Kadijah Robinson and Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo were also among the final five.
