You realize New York is also a megacity, being one of the largest cities in the world. At the moment Jo'burg might be at an elevated status in Africa, not the New York of Africa yet, but I'm placing my bet that in the next 20 years Joburg's importance will have rapidly declined with emerging, mega cities like Lagos and Cairo toppling Joburg. This of course means these two cities will improve rapidly in infrastructure and sustain growth over the years. These two cities currently are moving in those directions. Africa is about to get a whole more interesting
I didn't say Jo'burg is the New York of the world, I said it is the New York of Africa. What New York is to America is what Joburg is to Africa. Get your facts right. And no. Jo'burg can never be the New York of Africa - perhaps the Mumbai of Africa. Lagos is big but its economic impact isn't so outstanding and infrastructurewise it still lags behind.

be truthful to urself for once, stop d childish act.

U can't compare SA's development with d remaining sub Saharan countries, S.A was already developed before some African countries independence. SA has been the country with best economy and largest stock exchange in Africa for more than half a century, so it's baseless comparing SA with other sub Saharan countries, infact it's better they compare with some regions in Europe or Asia.

It's not a matter of whites or black, at least their colonial masters saw themselves as Saffers n built d country unlike many other African countries where colonist loot their resources.
So based on my post below and what you've just posted, where is the contradiction and what is false about my post? It is not S. Africans comparing themselves to you, it is you comparing yourselves to them and trying to belittle their progress so who is childish now?

I hope people like KiberaWalker aka NairobiWalker can see this.
Many middleclass Nigerians do not like living in Lagos. A lot of us prefer to live in other cities.

While growing up, my father vowed to us that the day his job takes him to Lagos, that same day he will resign that job.

In Kenya, the reverse is the case, everyone wants to live in Nairobi grin
Well let's see,

Nairobi's population (City, not Metro) - 4M people = 9% of Kenya's population
Lagos' population = 21M = 12% of Nigeria's population. Indeed many middle class Nigerians don't love living in Lagos.

Anyway, Cities and towns outside Nairobi in Kenya are far better than cities and towns outside Lagos in Nigeria. Anyone would choose to live in Nakuru below rather than Onitsha below anytime.

Don't show me Langata which only a section of Kiberans numerically spillover into and outnumber. That's dumb.

Show me decent Nairobi houses and their price tags to prove your city. Is that too much to ask for? grin
That is not Langata dude, that is Umoja, lol. Langata is better than all estates in Lagos.

Anyway since you're obsessed with shady online ads, let me give you one and see what your excuse will be this time.

Show me a house like this in Lagos that costs an equivalent of KES 5,500.

I am not trolling! Kenyan low income houses look like concentration camps yet so expensive.

Abuja main city is also very expensive like Nairobi. But as usual, Nigerian cities like I told you are designed for everyone irrespective of your pocket size.
You can enjoy a decent house in any Nigerian city no matter how small your pocket is.... You must not be forced into a congested multi-story building with thousands of people in terribly small rooms without ventilation and yet pay 10k shillings (35,000 naira) per month.

Before you argue with me, read this link below of your fellow Kenyan telling the true story of housing problem in Nairobi.

http://www.ghafla.com/crisis-how-housing-in-nairobi-has-become-a-nightmare-for-millions-of-city-dwellers/

Let us give Lagos a break and move to Abuja which is our capital city.
Look below at the different ranges of price of a single bedroom in Abuja in ascending order of cost. There are more expensive ones and cheaper ones.

Notice that all the houses look very decent no matter how cheap they are. Lower income people must not be dehumanized for the sake of making Nairobi impressive to foreigners. You people must stop living fake lives.

Apart from Noble price in peace, why can't black Africans get noble prices in other things, at least Nigeria would rather produce in literature rather than peace, and we are literary giants even till this day, though not like we were in the eighties.
For some weird reason, you think writing literature books is better than fighting for black people and demanding equality and justice.

l think his point is that it is meaningless comparing SA with decades of white rule to other African countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, etc where the whites did little except in exploiting their resources for Europe.
At a time, Johannesburg was an important city to the world because of her gold, also take a look at the stock market of Johannesburg which has been in existence since the 19th century, why would you compare this to that of Nigeria formed immediately after independence in 1960, and hampered by some policies from decades of military rule.
The foundation of Southern Africa and West Africa is different and so are the problems. We are not saying black South Africans are dull or useless but that they were mainly iliterates until 1994, same with Nigeria which had mainly iliterates in 1960.
You guys love excuses. Now you're crediting SA's development to white people and gold. Meanwhile you have oil which Kenya doesn't - why are you not ahead of Kenya? Johannesburg is still an important city to the world and still the richest city in Africa with by far the busiest Airport, best infrastructure, most skyscrapers, largest stocks exchange busiest roads etc. To make it simpler, Jo'burg is the New York of Africa.

Yeah, I am proud to be from Jos (central Nigeria).
I currently live in Warri city in South-south Nigeria.

Both cities have a large urban area of over 1.5 million people. By the next census next year, they would have both clocked 2 million people each. Their economies are growing too.
I visit Lagos occasionally and know the city quite well.

You see, I am happy that Nigeria is not like Kenya where everyone has to live in Nairobi.
The majority of Nigeria's middleclass population do not live in Lagos unlike your one-city country.
I can bet my balls here that all of you Kenyans on this thread live in Nairobi grin where you are heavily congested in those concentration camp houses that dominate Nairobi grin

How can people live in concentration camps? Are you just dumb or you're trolling?

The reason we say you've never been to Lagos is because what you say about Lagos and the real picture on ground are two very different things as a real Nigerian who lives in Lagos said.

I can see Obaboon is back with blog articles again. SMH. I can find a million blogs and articles online giving a deplorable picture of Lagos' housing.
For example this article here says rent in Lagos is more expensive than Johannesburg which is very sad since Johannesburg is a much richer city with much higher average earnings. Lagosians spend 57% of their salary on housing according to this article which is very sad considering the kind of housing we are talking about is of very poorly. I wouldn't mind paying such an amount and living in cities like Ifrane in Morocco, Port Louis in Mauritius or Windhoek in Namibia but living in that kind of crap and still spending 57% of your earnings on rent? Lagos is a sad case.

Look at different pictures (the balcony, living room, bedroom and kitchen) from one house in Surulere and see the price. What else do you want? You can contact the agency yourself and make inquiries for yourself.
Dude, showing tiny photos of house interiors don't prove shit especially in Nigeria - home to yahoo boys. People will advertise a shitty building and put wrong pictures online only for somebody to end up in a hellhole like this one in Surulere. A house like this going for 300k Naira per year is a rip off. In Kenya houses that look like this are mostly old government houses that go almost for free.

Hahaha. Can you please show us these cheaper houses and their price tags? Thanks.

Lagos is bigger than you can imagine. Lagos is too big to classify into neighborhoods like Nairobi.

Lagos state is classified into cities, towns and local government areas.
Only one of these local govt areas sometimes have over 1 million people with both rich, middleclass and low income neighborhoods. That's why Lagos state is 6 times the size of Nairobi.
Nairobi is just like one of the cities that make up Lagos state.

Listing different neighborhoods within different towns of Lagos state would just be too confusing to you folks hence I focused on Surulere.
The Umoja houses you quote above for instance are no where close to 15K. They're all less than 7k per month.

Lagos is 4 times, not 6 times larger than Nairobi. Size is basically a function of population and if Kenya had the population of Nigeria definitely Nairobi would be of similar size to Lagos. Anyway, size doesn't matter. Quality matters. You keep talking of population, please bring the neighborhoods and lets compare the quality. There is nothing to be proud of with a city of millions looking like this.

Not all houses in Umoja go for 15K. The majority that you quote go for less than 7k per month and are mostly 1 bedroom and bedsitters. The inside is okay though...........the particular street you quoted just seems to be in a bad shape. Probably a crook contractor didn't complete his job. All in all, they're still way better than those Surulere slums you pay 15k for. I look at Kenya and wonder why Kenya as a country is still competing with countries like Nigeria that fought a civil war for 3 years where millions of lives were lost and many cities burnt to the ground.

Kenya has been enjoying democracy since independence, unlike Nigeria that was ruled by the military for decades. The military rule stalled our progress and took us many years backwards.

Otherwise, Kenya as a country would never have been able to compete with Nigeria. The military rule destroyed everything.

What excuse does Kenya have for still being this backward?
Same way I wonder why Nigeria - A country that produces more oil than most oil rich gulf countries, is still competing with Kenya.

You see that's the problem. 15k shillings (53k naira) per month is too expensive for a 2 bedroom appartment in a place like Roysambu.
In Lagos, any 2 bedroom apartment that will cost that much will be mostly a very beautiful modern bungalow or single story building in a purely middleclass neighborhood.
You can get half the price or even 1/3 to 1/4 of the price if you go to purely lower income neighborhoods.

I hope you can see my point.

Kano
Why are you still lying on this? When I search rent in Sulurele, the cheapest I get for 2 bedrooms is 600k Naira per year. That translates to 14K Kenya shillings per month and considering you guys pay annual rent, that even makes it hard for many people to afford. In Kenya rent is monthly and where you have the option to pay for the whole year, you're given a massive discount.
