OrlandoOwoh: Ever since the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648, what has been the relationship like between the state and religion in Europe? I'm sure will agree with me that the state now has power more than religion. Get me right, the fact that the bond between state and religion is not as strong as before doesn't remove the fact that the two are inseparable. |
Politics › Re: Buhari Cancels Govt Delegation To Hajj, To Save $1m by Napoleone(m): 4:31pm On Aug 11, 2015 |
OrlandoOwoh: Religion should be separated from the state. Before the Treaty of Westphalia, the pope and priests were thorns on flesh of monarch. My point is that, it cannot be totally separated. |
Politics › Re: Buhari Cancels Govt Delegation To Hajj, To Save $1m by Napoleone(m): 4:28pm On Aug 11, 2015 |
kenny987: Not to the detriment of the people. The people have to be alive and fairly content to be properly religious. You cannot have people dropping dead or lying sick due to lack of infrastructure and non-payment of salaries and then have same 'scarce' resources expended on ventures that are still circulated among the privileged few. These pilgrimages do not in any way improve the life of the common man who has many hungry mouths to feed!
Again, I have not asked for religion and faith to be banned. The right thing is for the government not to be actively involved in such issues and rather concentrate on its primary duty of good and sound governance which translates to a sane and conducive environment suitable for all things good including peaceful practice of any any religion. I think your last paragraph conveys my message. I'm not in support of white elephant plans for pilgrimage; my assertion is that, in as much as we detest frivolous expenses on religion, it cannot be totally disregarded. |
Politics › Re: Buhari Cancels Govt Delegation To Hajj, To Save $1m by Napoleone(m): 12:14am On Aug 11, 2015 |
kenny987: Good! I hope this leads on to the entire government excluding itself from religious pilgrimages whether Christian or Muslim. Religion is a private thing and should remain so. State governments ought to respect and enforce this too especially those owing salaries! I wonder what they discuss in their Governors' Forum that it has not yet occurred to them to stop these wasteful activities and quit throwing our money at foreign governments from airlines to the pilgrimage destinations. Countries that still have no regard for Nigeria because she refuses to fix her issues despite so many resources! Yet, Napoleon Bornaparte said "A state without religion is like a vessel without a compass" |

chigoizie7: If it was initially made with thatched roofs and now with zinc, then, it is certainly not the oldest. The title gets the award, hun? It's called juristic person. Don't forget that if you're the first to swallow a lion alive, the fact that you're now grown up doesn't take that record away from you |

Does that structure look like a structure built in 1800s? The point is this, it was initially made with thatched roof and you can't expect the church to still be using thatched roof in this period of modernization. It's ever recorded that there was a time the church was burnt because of political upheaval and turbulence. |
Christianity Etc › Re: The First And Oldest Church In Nigeria Gets Record Certificate[pics] by Napoleone(m): 10:03pm On Aug 06, 2015 |
Berrypie: I think the name should have that title. As for the structure, I doubt it is as old. I have seen the building severally, I don't think it is what was there in the beginning. Yes, that's true. According to Historians, it was initially made with thatched roof. |

When did they tour round Nigeria to know Which church was built first? And what makes a church? Gathering of people or mighty structure?

LOC1: But, CMS Badagry should be the oldest. It was built in 1841 Abeg, na lie ooo...Thomas Birch Freeman was the first Missionary to be sent(by the Methodist/Wesleyan) and he arrived Badagry in 1842. Henry Townsend was later sent by the CMS and both of them had joint Christmas Eucharist on the 25th of December, 1842. The people of Badagry do contest with Ake because of this service. |

Ikaosunwon: The one wey dey Badagry nko? The Missionaries, Thomas Birch Freeman and Henry Townsend, just had Eucharist at Badagry on the 25th of December, 1842 and they moved to Abeokuta because the people of Badagry were not so receptive. |

bokohalal: And the one that were built in Warri and Benin City in the sixteenth century were in Angola. don't be ignorant! Christianity got to those places through the Niger Mission and Samuel Ajayi Crowther who played a prominent role there was first at Ake where he reunited and baptized his mother after 25years of separation by slavery. |

mrrhymes223: I dont believe this. The first church in Nigeria is the methodist church at Badagry by Rev Thomas Berth Freeman. Pls Go and verify. I cant remember the exact yr Nice question. On December 25, 1842, Thomas B. Freeman and Henry Townsend just had joint Eucharist in Badadry. Due to the fact that the people of Badagry were not receptive, the moved to Abeokuta. Besides, it was the returnees from Sierra Leone, called the Creoles, that requested for missionaries from Sierra Leone because they felt spiritually empty and dry. See B. A. Adeyanju, "The Creoles and the Gospel in Nigeria" (2014). |

achinaboy: you are calling this the oldest church in Nigeria, because nobody told them about the one in my village Abegi! Go and read history. Don't argue out of ignorance! You're saying this because the church looks somehow modern. Well...for your information, apart from the fact that I attend the church, I offered a course on it. The church was first made with thatched roof and you can expect it to still be built with thatched roof. |
