European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / West Brom Players Present Osaze Odemwingie QPR Shirt In Dressing Room by Napolitano(m): 3:05pm On Feb 02, 2013

The most bizarre incident of the transfer window took another twist on Saturday February 2nd, when a picture emerged of a QPR shirt with Peter Odemwingie's name printed on the back.

The shirt was alleged to be presented in the dressing-room by Peter Odemwingie’s fellow West Bromwich’s teammates
The West Brom striker turned up at Loftus Road on Thursday ready to complete a move to Queens Park Rangers, only to be turned away by staff when it became clear no deal had been agreed between the two clubs.

Odemwingie who had appeared on the media outside the ground about his delight at the imminent move was then forced to return to West Brom.

West Bromwich’s boss Steve Clarke suggested yesterday that the striker would have some explaining to do to his own team-mates, but it appears they may have reacted in fairly good humour to the whole farce.

The picture above was posted on Twitter this morning - the West Brom players apparently having had Odemwingie's name printed on a QPR jersey and left it for him in the dressing room at the club.

Steve Clarke said yesterday: “I am sure he has annoyed his team-mates. There always has to be a way back.

Sports / 2014 FIFA World Cup Ambassadors Unveil Official Posters by Napolitano(m): 5:11am On Jan 31, 2013

In their first official mission, the newly appointed ambassadors of the 2014 FIFA World Cup unveiled today (30 January 2013) the tournament’s Official Poster at a media briefing in Rio de Janeiro. Four FIFA World Cup winners, Amarildo, Carlos Alberto Torres, Bebeto and Ronaldo, as well as women’s football star Marta, were invited by FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke to end the suspense and help unveil the design. The Official Poster was the last remaining visual icon to be launched for the 2014 edition of FIFA’s flagship event.

“The poster is a great example of Brazil’s creative excellence. The winning entry will no doubt serve as a splendid visiting card for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, that is due to kick off in 498 days. The poster highlights the significance and sparkle of the event as well as the fascination of football in a very emotive way”, explained Valcke, who was part of a high-profile judging panel also made up of Brazilian Minister of Culture Marta Suplicy, LOC President Jose Maria Marin, Brazilian artist Romero Britto as well as LOC Board of Administration members Ronaldo and Bebeto.

Source: Fifa.com
“It’s different, Brazilian, creative and daring. It has our boundless size and manages to capture our rhythm and colours. Let’s go for victory!” said Marta Suplicy, Brazilian Minister of Culture.

The Official poster was designed by Brazilian creative agency Crama, which was selected ahead of two other designs.
“The Official Poster is an important step for showcasing Brazil and the FIFA World Cup in the Host Country and abroad. It is important to convey the message of a country that is modern, innovative, sustainable, happy, united and, of course, passionate about football,” explained Ronaldo.

“I’m sure that when Brazilians see the official poster they’ll feel represented. We’re proud of this important symbol of the FIFA World Cup, which also shows the passion for football in our country,” added Bebeto.

The artwork depicts the beauty and diversity of Brazil through a colourful, emotional and vibrant design. The creative concept at the heart of the poster is “An entire country at football’s service – Brazil and football: one shared identity”, which inspired Crama to shape the winning design. This is evident throughout the poster, particularly where the players‘ legs challenging for the ball reveal the map of Brazil.

I think the fan is simply praying the glorious days come back. Back in the days Nigerian Super Eagles were a fearsome team who could dismantle any great team like Brazil but now, here are the Eagles finding it so hard to beat Burkina Faso.
Sports / What Super Eagles Can Do To Win My Heart Back : A Fan's Appeal by Napolitano(m): 7:02am On Jan 29, 2013
As I was growing up, my father and our neighbours would gather round a radio whenever Green Eagles were playing to listen to commentaries. Up till now my father refers to Super Eagles as Green Eagles. They would be acting as if they were the one playing the ball; all their bodies would be moving as the commentator was shouting the players' movements.

They would be jumping, dancing and hugging each other after the commentator had finished shouting Rashidi Yekini, Rashidi Yekini, Rashidi Yekini is a gooooaaaaal. But their moods would suddenly change as if something bad had happened when the commentator would end his shouting of Rashidi Yekini with ooooh nooo!

Rashidi Yekini was my idol. Those of us in my generation — who knew how to kick a pack of nylon folded together to make a ball — wanted to be Rashidi Yekini. I am still waiting for the time when Nigeria will produce another prolific goal scorer like him. I can't forget that scissors kick he made in France 98. I loved him. May his soul rest in peace.

When I was in primary 3, my father bought me a Wembly 5 football. I would take it to school to play with my friends. On this particular day, during the break time as we were playing, we kicked the ball into a class. The wicked mistress in that class seized it. We begged her to release it but she refused to hear our pleads. That was my first sad day in football world. I cried and couldn't eat when I got home. My father promised to buy another one for me. Whenever he was around he would take me to Ogbomoso Township Stadium to watch football. He loves football. According to him, his parents stopped him from playing football when he lost the front set of his teeth. I believe I inherited the passion for football from him.

I heard a lot about Tunisia 94, USA 94 and Atlanta 96. The stories made me fell in love with national teams and I said I will always support them. By doing this I was not only a patriot but also got myself involved in what I loved most.

Everything changed in year 2000 when Nigeria and Ghana co-hosted the Nations Cup. I followed the team from the first match to the final. I loved the passion, the spirit and the fight they gave Senegal to beat them 2 - 1 and also not to forget how we levelled Cameroon when we were trailing them 2 - 0. I was out of this world when Okocha scored that second goal. But at the end of the day, Cameroon stole it from us. I was devastated. I cried. I was in bad mood for almost a week. I got sick of everything. But thank God, committing suicide didn't cross my mind.

I still love football, I still love Super Eagles and other national teams. I am always happy when we win but I don't care when we loss. I really want to go back to that period when I would cry and starve myself, only if Super Eagles return home with gold medal from South Africa.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Anelka Signs 5-year Deal With Juventus by Napolitano(m): 3:08pm On Jan 27, 2013

Juventus have signed Nicolas Anelka on a five-month deal after the Frenchman arrived in Turin for a medical on Saturday. The 33-year-old Frenchman arrives from Shanghai Shenhua in China where he has been playing since he left Chelsea.

The Juventus chief executive Giuseppe Marotta said the club had agreed a deal with Anelka until the end of the season, with the option for a further year.

"It can be a good move for the short term, then at the end of the season we'll evaluate what must be done," Marotta said.

Anelka expressed his gladness at the Airport on arrival in Italy.

"I'm very happy to be here." Says Anelka

Juventus previously indicated interest in Didier Drogba. It seems Anelka is coming as a good replacement for the quest. Juventus will be Anelka's 10th club. So far, Anelka has played for Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Fenerbahce, Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea and Shanghai Shenhua.

Sports / Osaze Faces Fine In West Brom For Offensive Tweets by Napolitano(m): 4:58am On Jan 27, 2013

Osaze Odemwingie is facing a £70,000 fine after criticising West Brom for rejecting his transfer request.

Odemwingie accused Albion bosses of showing a lack of respect — and leaving him hurt as they rejected his transfer request to Queens Park Rangers in an unauthorized interview.

His statement said: “I’m deeply hurt and in some ways offended by the lack of reciprocal common respect from the club management.

“I’ve not taken this decision lightly and would like the club to accept what is more than a reasonable offer from QPR.”

And he risked another club issue when he later gave a Twitter rant.

“I am crazy, ha-ha. Adviser text saying don’t tweet. When I want to do something, I do it.”

Odemwingie, 31, now faces a fine of two weeks’ wages after the club confirmed he had breached rules by giving an unauthorised interview.

His incessant Twitter rants have also put him on the edge against Nigerian coaches in the past and it is attributed as one of the reasons he is not playing in the ongoing African Cup of Nations.

Politics / Re: Total Move Staff Out Of Abuja by Napolitano(m): 7:50pm On Jan 26, 2013
Northern Nigeria better get ready to deal with economic woes as a result of the insecurity there. Right now they are the least-yielding states financially in Nigeria and things can only get worse for them. The sooner the Northerners realise that this is their problem and deal with it, the better for them. The FG cannot handle the entire insecurity problem for them.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Abidal Set To Return In February 2013 by Napolitano(m): 4:12pm On Jan 23, 2013

French defender, Eric Abidal has resumed regular training with his club, Barcelona in December. This is a good news after spending long time at the sidelines following a liver transplant. The 33-year old is reported to make a comeback in the nearest future.

"Abidal will receive the medical all-clear in the first half of February and will be a Barcelona player again," Juan Carlos Garcia Valdecasas, the doctor treating Abidal, told Cadena SER.

"Eric is keen to play games again, and it now all depends on Barcelona's selection criteria rather than on his medical condition. His attitude has played a big role in his recovery. He really has an extraordinary and very positive attitude."

Abidal last featured for Barca in February 2011.

Sports / Zambia's Coach Underestimates Eagles Ahead Of Meet-up by Napolitano(m): 1:12pm On Jan 23, 2013

Zambia coach, Herve Renard has tipped the Chipolopolo to beat Nigeria’s Super Eagles when the two sides clash in their second group C game at the ongoing 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

After posting draws in their opening games, both sides will be hard pressed to register their first win to reignite their flagging hopes of progressing to the last eight of the competition.

Renard who had previously written off the current Super Eagles as the worst Nigerian team he had ever watched believes the West Africans will not stand between them and a quarter final berth.

"We are going to reach the quarter finals. The performance (against Ethiopia) is my responsibility as coach. I saw the team in the first half didn't play well and we didn't play like we were ready for the Africa Cup of Nations," Renard told Zambian newspaper, the Post.

Renard then took the time to praise the Ethiopia side that drew 1-1 with the champions on Monday.

"I am not surprised that they Ethiopia played the way they did," said Renard. "I said before the tournament that we need to be careful with other teams because everyone is out to get the Afcon trophy,"

Friday’s game between Nigeria and Zambia will kick off by 4pm.
