The General Officer Commanding the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Jamil Sarham, has alleged that Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike offered him billions of naira as bribe to compromise the 2019 general elections in the state. Wike had accused the GOC of running an illegal oil bunkering squad and planning to use the proceeds from the alleged illegal oil bunkering to finance his quest to be appointed Chief of Army Staff.

But the spokesman of the division Col. Aminu Iliyazu, in a statement Monday night, said: Wike’s allegation against Major General Sarham’s selfish involvement in illegal oil bunkering is another reckless, spurious and mischievous accusation. Hence, Headquarters 6 Division wishes to request the Governor to take the most civilised way of putting up a petition to the relevant authorities to make a point. “Mr Wike’s resentment against the GOC is based on the latter’s choice of professionalism and integrity over the billions of naira offered to him by the governor to compromise the 2019 general elections. His refusal to be bought over and the rejection of such hefty offer is the genesis of Wike’s hatred and vociferous criticisms against Maj.-Gen. Sarham.”

He said Wike’s allegations were false and a figment of his imagination to tarnish the image of the Chief of Army Staff and the GOC. “As weighty as the allegation was, we are yet to know any action taken by Mr Wike that guarantees his safety. Mr Wike has since failed to use civilised legitimate options to prove his allegations against Maj Gen Sarham,” he stated

Unidentified gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have attacked Girls Secondary School in Zamfara state and allegedly abducted unspecified number of people, BBC Hausa Service reports. According to the BBC report, the bandits stormed Government Secondary School, Moriki in Zurmi Local government area of the state on Wednesday night during a champions league match.
A local source told BBC that during the attack, the bandits brandished weapons, shot sporadically on the air and killed one person in the town of Moriki before the attack on the school. A vigilante in Moriki also said that the bandits blocked roads leading to Moriki during La’asar prayer (3:30pm) before attacking the school in the evening.
The vigilante disclosed that the bandits were able to abduct two teachers, four cooks but were not able to reach students hostels. BBC reports that kidnapping in Zamfara was on the rise in recent times despite the concerted efforts by the security agencies to curtail the menace bedevilling North West.

Justice Yetunde Idowu of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, on Wednesday, ordered the proprietress of Cendom International Nursery and Primary School, Olodi-Apapa, Uche Owen, to pay N25m as damages to a five-year-old pupil of the school, Destiny Kalu after he was flogged for owing the school fee.

Destiny, through his father, Inyima Kalu, had in 2013 sued Owen and his class teacher, Uduak Sam, for inflicting severe injuries on his right eye through flogging over the non-payment of his school fee.
According to his statement of claim, on June 20, 2011, Owen came to his classroom and flogged all the pupils who had yet to pay their school fees.

Destiny added that while being flogged, his right eye was covered in blood and he was left in tears for several hours unattended to.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Destiny was subsequently rushed to the Ajeromi General Hospital, Lagos, where he was treated and later referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.

Ethiopian woman disfigured, blinded by acid attack by her abusive husband after she asked for a divorce .

Doctors, teachers, and complete strangers from across the Bay Area, California,U.S, are rallying behind Atsade Nigese from Ethiopia, who survived a brutal act of domestic violence when her husband poured acid all over her face and body. .

Speaking through her friend who served as an interpreter, Nigese says her husband, who was a federal police officer in Ethiopia, regularly beat her and broke her teeth.
But one night, a year ago, after she told him she wanted a divorce, she said he threw acid on her. .

Nigese is now blind with scarred skin. Her body is disfigured and even her own son initially rejected her, saying he knew her by her voice but could not identify anything else about her.Menbere Aklilu of Richmond said she wanted to help. Two years ago, she helped another Ethiopian woman, who had also been burned by acid, something she said her ex-fiance had thrown on her. .

Because of that experience Akilu, who also survived an abusive relationship, knew how to get Nigese a visa. And she flew to Ethiopia to retrieve Nigese and invited her to live with her and get some medical help. Akilu said she’d love it if Nigese could one day see again. “I want her to get her vision, that’s my dream,” Aklilu said.

For nearly seven months, Nigese has been living with Aklilu. The two women, both from Ethiopia, share another special bond, one they don’t wish on anyone else. Both have survived domestic abuse.
“I see myself through her,” Akilu said. “I’m lucky I run from him. So today I have the ability to help others.” .


In her short time living in the Bay Area, Nigese is slowly learning to become independent once again. She’s learned to get around using a cane. Three hours a day, five days a week, Nigese learns Braille and English, with volunteers at her side.
On top of that, doctors from the University of California at San Francisco are donating their time and talents to reconstruct her ears, eyelids nose and mouth.
