Averting road accidents in Nigeria





Road accidents have become a regular phenomenon. Every day Nigerians die on the road and many are injured. In such circumstances, the role of medical institutions become important, as the first few minutes after the accident, termed the “Golden Hour,” are very precious and crucial. Many lives could be saved and disabilities prevented by providing immediate treatment to accident victims.

Among the accidents resulting from the development of air, land, sea and river transport, road accidents predominate both in respect of their frequency and seriousness and in terms of human and economic cost. There is no doubt about it; there are far too many accidents on the road today. Even if you are the most careful and contentious driver on the road there is still a chance that someone will slam into your car causing you, at the very least, some property damage and maybe something far worse.

Mr. Julius Adekoye lamented that: “Road accidents in Nigeria claim more lives daily than any other factor because of the multiple lapses in our system which contribute to such road mishap, some of which are fatal in some cases”. There is nothing you can do that will guarantee you a constantly safe and totally accident free driving experience, but there are several things that travellers could do to help minimize the amount of accidents that occur on the road every day. First, Obey the traffic laws the state makes prospective drivers pass a test before they get behind the wheel for a reason, automobiles can be very dangerous if they aren’t operated properly and according to the laws of the road. Speed limits, traffic signs and all other traffic signals should be closely adhered to every single time someone gets behind the wheel, traffic laws are put in place to protect all of the travelers who are sharing space on the road. Following traffic signals isn’t an option, those drivers that treat it as such are usually the ones you see pulled over to the side of the road being handed a violation paper by officers.

A student member of the International Society of the Red Cross, Miss Kemi Oluwapo said that: “Road accidents, though labelled accidental, are most times caused by dangerous driving which informs why we keep having them everyday, despite efforts by relevant agencies to have them minimised on our roads”. Pay Attention to the Road and Your Surroundings at all times There could be many things going on in traffic all around you, so it’s crucial that you pay attention to everything going on around you. Driving should be your only focus while behind the wheel. Some drivers, while on wheels eat their breakfasts, drink their coffees, apply their make up and change their outfits and these are often the drivers that are involved in accidents.

Mrs. Josephine Agwu cautioned that “If you don’t have time to eat, change or apply your make up before you get in the car, it’s probably a good idea to start getting up earlier. Those five extra minutes of sleep won’t help you replace your destroyed automobile or help with your rehabilitation following an accident”. Put down the cell phone. Our cell phones now are a huge survival tool, they let us make calls, receive and send text messages and e-mails, surf the internet and get directions, watch videos, take pictures and listen to music, among other things, but one place they don’t belong is in your hand while you’re behind the wheel.

You simply can’t concentrate on the road and the things going on around you while you’re typing a text message or reading an e-mail. There are laws against using your cell phone while driving in many states now, and those laws are just as important to follow as all of the other laws on the road, you can read your e-mails and send your texts when you get to your destination, but doing so while you’re driving may not let you get to your destination at all. Don’t drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol as it is a major cause of accidents and automobile related deaths. An easy way to prevent this is not to drive while you are under the influence of alcohol, if you have to drink, and then find another way to get home. Have a sober friend drive you, take a cab or spend the night where you are, but never get behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking.

Many of the accidents that occur are preventable, if people would just pay attention and abide by the laws of the road. By staying aware of your surroundings you can help to minimize the chances that you’ll be involved in an accident, but if you choose to drink and drive or play with your cell phone while you’re driving then you are destroying yourself.

Road accident is a sheer wastage of resources, I am surprised that even in slums, road accident is the primary cause of lost of lives. I suggest we should look at the fatal accidents and find out reasons why accidents are happening, who is responsible for the accident and provide a way of preventing road accidents in future by analyzing the data of road accidents. In this country, one can easily get a driving license even without knowing how to start a car. Road safety depends on pedestrians, drivers and the traffic department. The primary causes of road accidents are high speed and poor condition of roads; one has to take care of his own while on the road We should learn to create awareness about road precaution because lack of awareness is one of the main problems we are facing in Nigeria and it should be initiated by Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

A commuter, Mrs. Nwanne Iwu told this writer that “The medical practitioners can also help in reducing death by attending to the victim urgently, but in Nigeria medical handling of crash victims is far from satisfactory. “The time taken between the accident and the hospital is critical, but the procedural wrangles and public fear of getting involved in a police case delay crucial help. “Additionally, the police and the medical institutions often prioritize completion of medico-legal formalities over treatment that results in the death or permanent disability of many victims. Moreover, many medical institutions deny emergency cases by giving lame excuses, such as non-availability of beds, and other facilities”. The possible way of solving this matter is for the Supreme Court to pass an order that a road accident victim should be attended to immediately so that his life is saved.

And also, the police should stop harassing a citizen that sacrificed his time in taking the victims to the medical homes as that contributes greatly to the death of accident victims, many are afraid to help saying ‘I will be arrested and detained by the police, also the entertainment industry, which plays an important role in spreading messages and moldings public perceptions, continue to portray this undesirable state of affairs. Thus, there is an urgent need to sensitise common people, the police, the medical fraternity, as well as the entertainment industry on road safety issues.There is need for the Road Transport Workers, Individual to be empowered and enlightened on the issue of road safety and the need to obey all road rules and regulations

Four persons were feared dead while three others
were injured in a vehicle accident along the Agbor-
Abraka Road in Delta on Saturday, the News Agency
of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 6.30 a.m.,
involving a commercial bus with registration number
KRD 862 XC and two articulated vehicles with
registration numbers XC 306 AUC and XC 842 AUC.
Mr Olusola Olusegun, the Issele Uku Unit Assistant
Area Commander of the Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC), confirmed the incident.
The assistant area commander said the two
articulated vehicles collided while the bus rammed
into them.
Olusegun said that two of the dead bodies had been
recovered and deposited at the Obiaruku General
Hospital while the three injured persons had been
taken to the Agbor General Hospital.
He said that the two drivers of the articulated
vehicles were trapped in their vehicles, adding that
officials of the FRSC were trying to disentangle the
trapped bodies.
Olusegun said that officials of the FRSC had been at
the scene of the accident, trying to remove the
wreckage of the vehicles to make way for traffic to
flow on the road.

Am not a Jonathan supporter, or neither am I trying to express a benevolent attitude towards him. But It's a bit weird when Nigerians tend to blame this man for every damn issue that pops up in the country. I agree, the poor state of our roads in Nigeria is a bit worrying, but blaming GEJ for every road mishaps is just idiocy.


Just last week, I was reading a sick comment on the internet - A user went all cocky about the popular " My Oga at the top " banter, he called Obafaiye Shem an " Illiterate " who he believes doesn't know how to spell his name. Then he ended his ignorant comments by blaming Jonathan for failing to inaugurate a committie to monitor the illiterate figures who are currently occupying the top government positions in nigeria ( I Lie! I Lie ! ).


Enough of the jokes really. majority of Nigerians believes car accidents are inevitable. Through my few years in this cruel world, I have tried to console myself that Accidents could be reduced drastically and the word " Inevitable " is just overrated. But I have come to realize clearly that the world itself is not fair - Just take a look at the Dana Airways horrible plane crash, do those innocent people that died deserve the unfortunate mishap that happened to them? Certainly not. Think it through - Those politicians who are up there stealing and causing more havoc to this world are left to roam about enjoying their lives. Now you call this world fair? I can only laugh.


Now just few weeks back, i got one of the most shocking news story. Over 100 people died in a fatal accidents along the ever busy Benin- Ore expressway. More dreadful, the corpse of this victims were all burnt beyond recognition. Now that Unfortunate scene was set to have happened when a cement-laden trailer reportedly had a burst tyre and rammed into a petrol tanker carrying fuel,the fuel tanker was set to have hit a fully loaded luxury, bus which burst into flames. Ofcourse to those silly and ignorant nigerians, it was Jonathan that planned the Accident scene and infact should be prosecuted- Sources are reporting his late visit to the War zone state (maiduguri) was set to have affected the tyres of the trailer that lead to the gory accident .


I could go on and probably won't stop, they make up idiotic arguments and excuses, All targeted to the fragile Ebele Jonathan. But nobody is actually looking at the actual cause why that accident might have happened.

Said it countless times and I would always repeat this everyday, laconically - "The equation is simple, if you drive recklessly, a fatal road mishap is around the corner". Blaming the government anytime an unfortunate incident evolves is just pathetic.


There are 90 percent chances that the accident on the Benin-ore expressway or, infact, most Accidents on the Benin-ore exressway are either caused by " Overspeeding or Reckless driving ". The statistics won't lie, the witnesses won't lie. They saw and gave to the press what they witnessed. Overspeeding has eaten deep into our driving system in Nigeria, nobody is bothered to follow the speed limits and traffic rules on our dying roads.

The roads are bad, the goverment are trying as much as possible to fix them. That is their part, everybody has to play his/her role in the society.

Can remember when I was younger, my dad always remind me that it's his duty (role) to pay my fees and other basic requirments I might need, while I also had my own role(s) to play too - Serve him, get good grades, the list goes on.


Bring that analogy to our driving system in nigeria, the government must play their parts(role) in making sure the roads are suitable for driving, while the road users which are basically us the citizens, must in return follow the rules laid on this roads - Drive safely; avoid over-speeding.


Moreover, during my recent visit on the Benin-Ore expressway, the state of the road is pretty in a very good shape.


Innocent people die everyday, it's a bit unfair but there is nothing we can do about it. Life is unfair - You could probably win a lottery ticket and on your way to cash your money, a trailer loses its break, you probably bleeped (dead).


Acting right and playing our parts (roles) to save lives and reduce the rate of accidents is very well acceptable. Avoid over-speeding and Reckless driving.


Well if you probably won't heed to my rants, I envisage that you would blame him (Jonathan) in the future for your inability to satisfy your wife on bed. Cheers X

Weird as it might sound, the actual truth from this topic needs to be addressed and I decided to elaborate a little more on seat belts and driving.

For those who might not have an idea of the real use of seat belts – Seat belts are vehicle
safety device designed to secure the occupant of a
vehicle against harmful movement that may result
during a collision or a sudden stop.

Unfortunately, recent accident cases in nigeria has shown the little impact of Seat belts in saving lives on our delapidated roads in Nigeria. 40,000 people die each year from accidents, this figure could be reduced if nigerians tend to practice the wearing of seat belts. But wearing this seat belts alone doesn’t guarantee your survival in most accident cases that has developed recently.

Last friday, Over 100 people were burnt beyond recognition on the Benin-ore express way when a truck belonging to the Dangote group Rammed into a fuel- landen tanker, even more worse, The container fully loaded with fuel was said to have fallen on a Young shall grown luxury bus with about 60passangers on board.

I wonder how the use of seat belts would’ve had any influence on this unfortunate incident. now don’t quote me wrong – Am not saying the use of seat belts wearing should be stopped or neither am I saying seat belts don’t protect during accidents, Just trying to inform the public that excellent driving should be practiced first . Relying on Seat belts to perform the “life saver” job when you drive reckless is idiocy.

Nigerians are noted to be too over confident when driving and that has been the major catalyst that has led to many accident scenes, and worse, deaths. The issue of over-speeding has eaten deep into our driving system in nigeria, people are no longer bothered about the poor state of our roads in nigeria.

For example, let’s analyze this type of accident collision that renders the use of seat belts unreliable in most cases.

Head-on collision :

Head-one collision is one where the front ends of two vehicles each other. This has been one of the common Accident collision that has led to the death of millions of people, Mostly take place on highways without demarcation. Although, during an head-on collision ; the seat belts hold you close to the chair, making it impossible for you to sustain injuries to your fore-head from hitting the steering.

But we have heard cases of many people trapped in a car and then crushed to death because of their seat belt. Getting trapped has killed many – Ranging from. Possible explosions and lack of breath. Driving safely should be practiced first before expecting the required help from the Seat-belts

A major road crash involving a Truck, a Tanker and a Luxury bus occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on Friday, today at Ugboguii Village on the Benin-Ore express road, the Federal Road Safety Corps is reporting.

The Corp say the vehicles are still burning up till 4.00 p.m.

“Rescue activities ongoing. Number of casualties not yet ascertained,” the Corps said on its social media channels.

The Corps is expected to issue a formal statement soon.

The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has confirmed the death of eighteen persons in an accident, which occurred along the Kwali-Gwagwalada Road, Abuja, on Wednesday morning.

In a statement issued by the FRSC Public Education Officer, Mr Jonas Agwu, he said that while eighteen people died in the crash, nine others sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident.
The statement said that the accident occurred at about 1.35a.m on Wednesday when a J5 bus with registration number XA 726 NSR lost control and rammed into a luxury bus with registration number XG 413 FGC.

It added that the 17 occupants of the J5 bus died instantly, while one died later in the hospital, adding that the dead were all males.

The FRSC said 13 of the corpses have been deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital mortuary, while the other five were taken to the morgue at Kwali General Hospital.

“The FRSC wishes to urge those whose relations travelled through the Kano “Lagos and Lokoja Sokoto routes to check the Kwali General Hospital and University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada for identification and collection of the corpses.



“The injured victims have been taken to the Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital for medical attention”, the commission said.
It disclosed that 96 people, including 70 males, 16 females and 10 children were involved in the crash.

The commission said that N217,000 was recovered from the wrecked bus, and promised that the money would be handed over to relations of the victims.

Now I won't bore you off with obvious lines stating girls importance to the world,Boys are equally too or even more. Moreover, my target readers are 80 percent boys, just saying.



We have heard cases of relationships barely two months old crashing mainly because of irreconcilable difference ,Now am not trying to protect the girls on this one, but most of this; " I need a break " or " We should go on holidays " are mostly initiated from the boys.



Said it before and maybe countless times, no matter how annoying you might be or you hardly give her the desired time she asks,or worse ; you beat(hit) her, a girl would never ask you to give her some space. Well except you are some retard who probably couldn't differenciate between your girlfriends butt and your mums.



And that is why personally I call them precious, they are ready to overlook your abhorrent flirting attitude with the hope of you changing someday, when chances of you dumping your flirting ways is smaller than a baby horse penis; heck that is even bigger. You didn't even remember your anniversary day because you were thinking about the english premier league football, I have been guility of that few times but I wonder why should I store any of that in my brain. But they always remember, its like an emotional day ; the day they finally said YES to your pestering stalking ways.


But despite all this, you would still find some screwed guys out there naming their girlfriends " Annoying " because she cares to know how your day has been. You call it "pestering" but remember you once did the same.


Then to make her pissed, you end up Calling a girl very pretty and you wish your girlfriend was like she, then she became jealous. What did you expect? She is giving out 100% percent and trying as much as possible to impress and sort of clone you to realize she is the prettiest thing and all you need. And then you utter that digusting statement. Yet she smiles, and maybe cry,it hurts. but she would forgive you, then she reminds herself that you're a dickhead who still has a lot to learn and maybe oneday would realize her worth better. Now why won't I call them special? Tell me.


Coming to reality on girls being "annoying" , A friend told me his girlfriend talks about other guys a lot and he finds it annoying. If you're Naming your girlfriend "annoying" because of that, then have got bad news.


Although, I may find it really annoying if my girlfriend talks about other guys a lot especially when we are together and alone. Girls do that a lot, but you can't stop them from doing that, if you cant bear it then I advice you start dating "dudes " . You could try telling her it really annoys you in a nicer manner and wait if she improves. If she doesn't, then I advice you try taking a break then. Reality, I think you are just being jealous and dumb, why would she talk to you about guys if she is planning on dating any of them? Chances are they are just friends. She shares them with you because she trusts you.


Lastly, you find some really funny obscene behaviours, a dude told me ever since he became intimated (sex) with his girlfriend, she has soon grown from the pretty personality he used to know to some annoying monster. Its sad really that no matter how I try to insinuate this last part, am wasting my time. but let's face reality ; Sex spoils relationships, especially to the young and inexperienced.



I would elaborate more on the sex issue in the second part of this post.



Before you break up with her because she is annoying, think it through.

First of all, I want to express my displeasure at the increased rate of accidents in nigeria caused by mostly careless driving and other attributes I would highlight, its like buying the newspaper of today ; you sure to find over 5 motor accident scene cases, it is really pathetic and unless we act right and induce what is to be done, we should expect more fatal car crashes in 2013.


Car Accidents are generally classified as single
vehicle either colliding with fixed objects or
multiple vehicle accidents in which two or
more vehicle can collide head-on.


The increased rate of car accidents in nigeria has been notably caused by the following ; speeding,drunk driving, seat belt wearing, careless driving , bad roads, Overconfidence and loss of control.

In as much as this Seven (7) factors are all important and have been the factors of motor accident cases in nigeria, but from statistical reports ; Speeding,Drunk driving and overconfidence has been the major catalyst of most car accident cases in nigeria. And I would love to elaborate more on this factors.


Just last week, an accident story was circulating the internet about 4 students from a particular university in nigeria involved in a fatal car crash apparently caused by speeding (over) and drunk driving. They all died.



Not forgetting the scary car accident figures we got from the festive period of 2012 : 280 DEATHS From 480 Road accidents. Half of those figures were caused by speeding and drunk driving.



Now in a country like Nigeria ; the lucky survivors of fatal car crashes would still insisting on not being at fault for the particular crash, pay attention to this quote :

"the feeling of being confident in more and
more challenging situations is experienced
as evidence of driving ability, and that
'proven' ability reinforces the feelings of
confidence. Confidence feeds itself and
grows unchecked until something happens, An Accident!"


Being so over confident when driving has been noted to display some sort of " I don't care attitude " while driving and " I am experienced! I know how to face any situation ", This over confident display then bring about Speeding and careless driving. In addition, they end up disregarding safety road signs ; Afterall they are so experienced and over confident, why should they obey road traffic signs?


A case of being in a public mass transport vehicle and you notice the driver speeding and also ignoring the traffic laws, you tend to express your opinion and try to caution him on his careless driving but you are likely to get this reply " You can't teach me my job! I am experienced ! I know how to drive very well ! "


Stats don't lie, even the so called confident and experienced ones are also involved in various callibres of motor accident cases, The issue of over confidence has eaten deep into our driving system in nigeria. Its good you feel over confident about your job, or making good grades in school but don't bring that into driving in nigeria, especially in the deteriorating state of our roads.


Also using the opportunity to appeal to passangers not to sit back and allow the driver to take all the decision and act like he is some kind of God, every single decision he takes on the road especially dangerous decisions would have a negative impact on you,Voice out your displeasure on his careless driving, Do not entertain risks. if he fails to comply, on sighting any of FRSC team on the road report to them immediately.


To say the least, it is really sad, the multitude of people we have lost to avoidable car crashes,especially the young lads who had a bright future ahead of them.


Keep this quote in mind : The equation is simple ; if you practice speeding and reckless driving, you likely to get an output of a fatal car crash, if not now, very soon.

So we have all heard those weird fuckery sayings suggesting "Mondays" the worse (Monster) days of the entire week? Infact, pronouncing " Monday " sends chills down spine,mood swings, but basically have we actually addressed why we don't pray for mondays? Or why we have successfully deduced that "Monday" is the worst day of the week?


Well,Lost count of how many times I have seen troll pics,updates and articles,Ignorantly criticizing "monday" and if possible should be banned.


Over the years,I have come to realize that people don't actually hate mondays,they only follow a deluded illusion that Mondays are tough,stressful and always busy. Nothing else,Nothing alarming,Just that.

Back then In College, I was also guilty of the " I hate Mondays " Syndrome,but I had to Analyze reasons why I was suffering from the lunaedieso phobia, which were My inability to complete my assignments,I had to address them and ever since then my mondays got sweeter.

I can understand when people complain about hectic traffic situations especially in populated cities like Lagos,New-york etc. But is that really a decent enough reason to justify and conclude your hatred towards Mondays? Ask yourself! It is not rhetorical.

Back then In College, I was also guilty of the " I hate Mondays " Syndrome,but I had to Analyze reasons why I was suffering from the lunaedieso phobia, which were My inability to complete my assignments,I had to address them and ever since then my mondays got sweeter.
