Bluelines69: Boring play, return James to RB or RWB It will not matter. There will always be an inverting full back, which means the rest of the bank line falls into a back 3. So there's will be no attacking full backs down the flank. We will not see James running down the wings under Maresca. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by nateevs(m): 4:05am On Jul 25, 2024 |
First half over.
Tactically, the defence line understands their role so far.
Lavia has been the most tactical player so far. He's made the most vertical passes to find his 8s. Best for me so far.
Marc Guiu second best player so far. Strong, pacy, technical. Definitely staying in the first team. And will challenge Nicholas.
Tyrique understand his role tactically. Most attacks have come from his side. And you can see him making those inside channel runs off the ball, when play is with the back line.
In the contrary, Madueke no understand anything.
Nkunku as 8 will not work. We need to see KDH come in.
Chuks as 8 is a perfect fit. |

BlewMahn: I hope this formation works out anyways, but I miss seeing James fly down that right hand side.
Anyways Nkunku opens the scoring. I was thinking the same about 5 mins ago. We are going to miss James bombing down that right hand side. |

Vischy: 🚨 BREAKING: Chelsea team!
Sanchez Tosin Badiashile Colwill James Lavia Carney Nkunku Madueke Guiu George
3223 Attacking formation Indeed it is the classic 3223 formation. Maresca did mention that Nkunku is the swiss-army knife player in the squad, able to play in all sorts of positions. @Blueangel maybe this answers or thoughts about who deputies in midfield. |

Amoto94: I'd rather have Lavia as 6 than Enzo, Enzo likes roaming and has a good shot on him putting him as a DLP will limit his effectivenes also he's weak aerially which will be targeted by opposition teams, no inverted fb will save him from being overrun in midfield with these decencies. In EPL you need your mid fielders to be technical as well as athletic else you'll be roasted. I think you are saying all this because you are yet to study the Maresca system. Once you do, you might begin to understand what we are talking about. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by nateevs(m): 1:41pm On Jul 24, 2024 |
BlueAngel444: well recent reports suggest Maresca is training Sterling and Madueke to keep the width on both ends and receive long balls.
I don't know if there will be a different tactical approach with Palmer on the right, but if Palmer gets to play midfield as he can't be benched, you seem to trust that Angelo would do a good job when fit especially incase of injury to Madueke which I pray doesn't happen.
I am fine with Angelo being the 3rd choice, but he may prove me wrong. And I also don't see Palmer starting in midfield seeing as we got KDH but I am starting to doubt our midfield depth for CMs with all this news of Santos, Gallagher, Casadei leaving.
Will Caicedo now play Left CM? When he is obviously better on the right side. If he's looking to play Palmer in midfield, then I am worried. It means we will have at least two top-tier midfielders not able to play. For instance, Palmer, KDH, Enzo means that Caicedo and Lavia on the bench. I don't know how he wants to approach squad management. I am guessing he sees Palmer as under-utilised hugging the wings. But I guess this means that Angelo has a better chance. After all, Maresca likes wingers inverted, and there's no other left-footed winger in the squad for now. It'll be a different case next season. Meanwhile, I think Caceido can play RCM box to box. |

Amoto94: Enzo is not a 6 he is a CM like Modric You are behind the curve sir. Enzo playing in 6 is specifically for a deep-lying playmaker. There's a huge advantage with being able to control offensive midfield play from deep. Your concern might that he's not astutely defensive, but this is the exact reason for Maresca's inverting full backs in a defensive posture. This squad is actually tailor-made for what Maresca wants to do. Now whether it will materialise is a different topic. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by nateevs(m): 8:28am On Jul 24, 2024 |
BlueAngel444: not surprised with the call up, just surprised Leo Castledine wasn't included.
What do you think the chances are for Angelo in a Maresca team Ordinarily I would say he does have a strong chance, if everyone is given a clean slate. But Angelo's potential inclusion is going to depend on what Maresca does with his midfield. If he goes with Enzo/Lavia as 6 and KDH/Caicedo/Chuks as his 8s, then this means Palmer on the right, Madueke, and then Angelo in that order of seniority. Which means less minutes for Angelo. But if Maresca employees a tactical variant of Palmer in midfield, then it's increased chances for Angelo. I personally think given a clean slate, Angelo can challenge Madueke seriously for a spot. |

Unlimited22: Andrey Santos is not an 8. He's a 6. Andrey Santos is not a 6. He's a box-to-box midfielder, which is what is required tactically for Maresca's second 8 set up. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by nateevs(m): 10:20pm On Jul 20, 2024 |
BlewMahn: Andrey Santos will return to Strasbourg after preseason.
Hmmm.
If he's destined to go back there, why not just let him have his preseason with them?
And I thought Maresca had big plans for him this season? I am surprised at this. I could have sworn that Maresca would fancy using him tactically as an option for one of his box-to-box 8s. |

His strongest and most-dynamic front 3 was Gordon, Watkins, Palmer. He would have won this game hands down. He decided to go with reputation and a blunt attack.
