Nihilist: Being the best player at a club in 20th position on the log is not justification for an England call up.
Not that he's even the best player for the Eagles sef. It was only when Zaha came back that Palace even managed to score a goal... But that's a different story.
If he went away and sat on the bench at the club in 20th position so far, does he get a call up?
Eruditor: Imagine listing out 15 things Messi is more skilled at, then 3 things that Crouch is better than him at.
Then concluding that Crouch is "more" talented because I am a Stoke fan.
The point has "fallen" on you it seems.
Meanwhile, to your point, I am going to assume you are only expressing figuratively here and not particularly claiming that there are 15 things KDB is more skilled at than Hazard. Cos I am really struggling to see why you have chosen this sentence, of all things you could possibly post.
Eruditor: ...that said KDB defends better than Hazard. Then some Shesea fans interpreted it to mean KDB is a defender.
Shesea fans are not saying much. They are mainly laughing tbh.
I think you could have made a better point by saying KDB has mastered better, the application of his talent than Hazard. I am not saying you still wouldn't have met resistance but you still would have given your point a chance.
You torpedoed the whole thing when you started saying KDB is more talented than Hazard; further killing the point by expressing that his (KDB's) height advantage must be seen as pure talent.
Drogba could possibly defend better than Messi. And?
Nihilist: I'm seeing Jake Livermore, Jack Cork and Lewis Cook in that squad...the latter two are debutants as well.
How many of those U21 boys are playing in EPL?
We all saw how Southgate quickly moved to call up Chalobah following his move to Watford. What had Chalobah done in his life to justify a call up?
Southgate is short of options. He's also calling up the u21 boys he thinks could do well based on his experience with them. Otherwise what the hell is Lewis Cook doing at Wembley?
I don't have any problems with Gareth choosing players based on his own criteria. Where I disagree is any attempt to say that the likes of RLC objectively deserved to be called up based on club performance.
I don't understand. If RLC went to Palace and went straight to the bench, how does he make this moment? Unless you are saying GS would have called him regardless; which will just be funny.
21-year old players get called up for different reasons. Some based on exceptional qualifications, others based of shortage in options. Regardless, they previously put themselves in a position to receive a call in the first place.
RLC went to Palace and became a fixture. He's not Hazard flashy so he is probably not catching the eye immediately. But Palace fans are nearly calling him their best player so far because he is doing the simple things well How's that not deserving?
If you were busting your back side at work to reach a long-term goal/position and it comes early to you because of a dearth of available qualified personnel, would you call yourself undeserving?
Nihilist: Nope. There are 2 reasons RLC got called up:
1. Southgate managed him at U21 level and has a lot of faith in his abilities from his performances at that level. Not a bad thing, but not current performance based either
2. The spate of withdrawals from the England squad for this round of friendlies - Henderson out, Winks out, Alli out, Delph out, Drinkwater out, lallana out.
just look at the England midfield in the latest squad - Jake Livermore, Jack Cork and Lewis Cook are in it. If Lewis Cook with only 8 EPL appearances over the last 2 seasons got called up, it just shows how desperate they are for bodies going into the Brazil game.
I certainly don't think RLC has done anything this season to warrant an England call up, but desperation is a factor. Then again, this is England we're talking about sef...
I believe I remember you saying something similar about Harry Kane. Look at him now?
1. Southgate managed 10s of kids at U21. He has not extended invitation to all of them, despite believing in many of them. 2. Rashford? Kane?
cstr1000: This is why England is poor. RLC had a decent game, nothing spectacular in comparison to his mates in other parts of Europe, and Gareth southgate is already ripping into Chelsea and insulting more experienced players. Bring RLC back and play him against decent opposition now, and everybody will start wondering where the Hype came from. Is it not the same thing Christiansen already did and is now in the first team? Shior.
There is no hype mate. Did the call-up come from nowhere? No! His performances leading up to this moment is the reasons this has happened.
Does he have much to improve on? Absolutely! For someone who has played far less football at his age.
Against decent opposition? See compilation videos below, playing alongside a bunch of halfwits who are mostly either just enjoying getting in the way of intelligent football, or just completely incapable of elevating their level to reason. Judge for yourself and see how he holds up against the big guns of the PL - without any hype.
Videos in this order: RLC vs Liverpool, Spurs and ManCity
Two young players leave the club and within 5 months, they get a National Team call-up. Yet some of us still hold the notion that the youth are not good enough.
VargasVee: Time has shown that everyone is replaceable, of course he'll be missed.
Him being a Director, he's supposed to be the backbone of the manager. He's the middle man between the manager and the board.
We lost him when Chelsea decided to appoint Jose again. Since then he has as much as turned his back on the managers.
The coach ought to have space to keep his mind solely on the affairs of the pitch. I'll always hold him in high regards, it's a pity we held on too long against his wish. I wish him more than well.
I think what others are contesting is if he ever got to operate as a TD with absolute powers conferred. This has been a discussion on here for years - one which has never resulted in unequivocal conclusion.
