Business / One Month On, Traders Ponder The Naira Free Float That Wasn't- Bloomberg by NavierStokes(m): 12:30pm On Jul 20, 2016

By Paul Wallace

The naira may breach 300 per dollar by next week, RMB says Bond yields too low to lure foreign investors, FBNQuest says It’s been one month since Nigeria ended its currency peg, pledging to let the naira float freely in the interbank market. It did, for a day.

Since the naira fell 30 percent against the dollar on June 20, the central bank has kept a grip on the exchange rate. Foreign-exchange inflows have barely picked up, according to FirstRand Ltd.’s investment banking unit, as policy makers maintain measures to curb dollar demand. The naira weakened 3.4 percent to 293.25 per dollar on Tuesday, having mostly traded between 280 and 284 since the devaluation from 197-199.

Forward contracts, which are bought and sold offshore and seen as a gauge of foreign investors’ views on the currency, are at record highs, suggesting traders expect the naira to weaken further. The question is when. Non-deliverable forwards maturing in three months rose 2 percent to 335 per dollar on Tuesday, while the black market rate of 368 is about 22 percent weaker than the official rate.

“We’re still plagued by the same problem we had prior to June,” said Nema Ramkhelawan-Bhana, an analyst at FirstRand’s Rand Merchant Bank in Johannesburg. “There’s growing import and investment demand that isn’t necessarily being settled. Market participants have been quite skeptical of this new framework. They’re not yet allowed to determine the rate themselves.”

Central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele and one of his deputies, Sarah Alade, met investors in the U.S. and U.K. last week to encourage them to buy naira stocks and bonds. Emefiele dismissed suggestions that there was too little foreign-exchange liquidity and said the black market was too small for investors to use as a gauge of the naira’s true value, according to two people who attended the private talks and asked not to be identified.

Forwards jumped and volatility surged following those meetings and after the central bank removed a rule capping the difference, or spread, between bids and offers in the foreign-exchange interbank market at 50 kobo on July 15. One-week historical volatility in the naira’s spot price increased to 21 percent this week, compared to an average of 6.7 percent over the past five years.

Curbing Demand

Still, little trading is taking place. Turnover in the interbank market averages around $40 million a day, according to analysts at Johannesburg-based Standard Bank Group Ltd. Three years ago, weekly volumes were as high as $1 billion.

The CBN is curbing demand for foreign currency by preventing importers of “non-essential” items ranging from glass to textiles from using the interbank market, forcing them on to the black market. Plus, to prevent speculation, all orders for dollars in the interbank market have to be backed by customer orders, meaning primary dealers and banks can’t trade for a profit on their own behalf.

After the central bank cut the spread limit, “market players appear to be more willing to bid for dollars at higher rates as demand remains strong,” Samantha Singh and Ayomide Mejabi, analysts at Standard Bank, said in a July 19 note. “It remains to be seen if this willingness of the central bank to see a truly free floating regime will be regarded as credible.”

‘Speculative Projections’

The Central Bank of Nigeria said nothing had changed since Emefiele’s meeting with investors last week.

“Investors should allow the market some time to work itself out,” said CBN spokesman Isaac Okorafor. “No one is fixing any prices. The market is not
bound to pander to unrealistic and speculative projections.”

Naira yields will have to rise by around 200 basis points before bond investors are keen to re-enter the country, according to RMB’s Ramkhelawan-Bhana. While average yields on local-currency government bonds of 15.1 percent are the highest after Egypt among 31 emerging markets tracked by Bloomberg, they’re negative in real terms, with Nigeria’s inflation accelerating to 16.5 percent in June.

Yet, the government seems reluctant to let yields rise much above 15 percent, according to FBNQuest, the investment banking unit of First Bank of Nigeria Ltd. Rates were kept below that level at a 120 billion naira ($420 million) bond auction on July 14 and “offshore buyers were again notable for their absence,” Gregory Kronsten, an analyst at FBNQuest in London, said in a note.

Tricky Sell

Nigeria faces a tricky sell even if it frees the naira, with inflation rising, the economy weakening and production of oil, which provides the bulk of export earnings, down since February as militants attack pipelines. Economic output will probably shrink 1.8 percent this year, the first contraction in more than two decades, the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday.

That will heap more pressure on the naira, says Ramkhelawan-Bhana.

“A breach of 300 is very likely, if not this week then next week,” she said. “The rhetoric is quite strong. The market is pushing for more flexibility.”

Excuses everywhere, sane people already warned about this highfalutin and unrealistic budget not built on any fundamentals the government wanted to give some sort of fantasy to her gullible supporters. You can't put this I on any NDA's or agitators because although they may impact your revenues but then it wouldn't have been to such an extent where you can not meet up with the budget.
Your albatross was from the poor policies that stifles economic activities creating an adverse ripple effect through all spheres of our economy.

A quick math is as below:
Projected direct oil revenue: 2.2 * 38
Actualized revenue: average of 1.8 million bbls a month January to date, averaged at 38 dollars per bbl yields a percentage delta of 0.4/2.2 *100~=18%.

Recall the boast that the oil revenues forms a small chunk of their projected revenue, so why is the FG trying to act like an 18%drop in a minute quantity would be so sensitive to significantly impact the total income as to threaten the budget's implementation.

(this argument is in Following the logic of zombie followers who do not understand the interconnectedness of all aspects of the economy and see each as disparate components thus their illogical arguments a few months ago on whule the budget of change was the best thing after fried rice)

My take from another thread, hasn't changed since yesterday.

The case of the witch cried at night and the baby died in the morning.

Since the beginning of the restiveness, these NDA boys have proven to be more "honourable, responsible with demonstrated integrity" than the other parties involved. They say what they mean and have meant what they said.

Exxon denies an attack on Monday and has declared a force majeure a few days later.

It's high time government throws a pragmatic and workable permanent solution to the myriad of problems in the Niger Delta.
I believe if the government addresses this challenge with sincerity of purpose, it can go away soonest. But on the contrary a tactless approach can threaten our very existence.

I personally feel pained by this clearly calculated attempt to shield clearly corrupt members of the PMB govt.
With this latest cover up,added to the fraudulent recruitments in the CBN,immigration,FIRS,etc,I have come to the belief that what the PMB govt is doing is:
'probing corrupt members that still remain in PDP' and not a true fight against corruption.
If u decamp to the apc from PDP or is an appointee under this govt, u are corrupt free.
It's a big let down, but I sincerely hope I am wrong and wud be so proved wrong soonest, but for now I am totally disappointed with this latest coverup, amongts others.

Reality!!!
Thing is anybody who feels this president is not being petty by going after his own perceived enemies and critics is living in fantasy land.
This man came at a time it seemed like the roofs over the houses of oil producing countries were on fire, rather than solve the problem he goes after the man who insulted him in the morning and was only walking past his burning house at the time.
Where we found ourselves, all hands were supposed to be on deck to lift our country out of the doldrums, but PMB chose to be cutting off the very remaining pieces of the foundation of the building.

Some talk about security, security and the economy are intertwined and can never be assessed individually because what ever affects the economy negatively is a matter of national security too, since it affects the existence of our very core, and capable of breeding anarchy.

To the topic at hand, Buhari and his FG have declared Buratai an example of "excellent savings and prudence" with our own Yaradua's Dambazau as a saint of no comparison.

Dasuki hasn't even coughed to the public yet, of the much that is walled up inside him. If Dasuki's mouth leaks to the public we all will not have the patience to wait for 2019 but will route these people out immediately.

WITH APC, INTEGRITY HAS FOUND A NEW DEFINITION.

Brother i feel you, it is your post so you would want to justify it. In all honesty, if you were asked to choose between stacks of N1,000 and stacks of Zimbabwe dollar, which would you pick? We all know the answer bro. Let us be realistic.

Alright lemme put it in clearer terms for you if you do not understand. Nigerians have gone poorer the most compared to the same time in the reference period under review.
As a quick illustration:
A nigerian man who owned 1000000 in loose terms may have had his investment whittled down by day 50% within the period.
And a Zimbabwean within the same period under review may have had his investment whittled down by say 20%.

Numbers don't lie, the reason I said an unbiased quantitative assessment.
You can chose to qualitatively hold on to sentiments but anyone who works with numbers would understand the simple explanation I am giving.

You need to realise that such computations are done in relative terms by comparing the values between two periods, that's the best way to make an unbiased or normalised quantitative assessment.
Fyi a currency that moved from say 500 to 600 has performed woefully compared to one that moved from 10000 to 10010. Compute the percentage changes and you will in clear terms be able to quantitatively assess which is faring better or worse.

Business / Naira Now Africa’s Worst Performing Currency Of 2016 by NavierStokes(m): 9:17am On Jul 15, 2016

The Nigerian naira took a dive on Thursday at both parallel and official markets, becoming the worst performing currency in Africa in 2016.

The naira, which began trading at around 283 to the dollar at the interbank market on Thursday, depreciated to 284/$1 to become the third worst performing currency in the world for 2016.

Nigerian naira, according to Bloomberg data, came ahead of only two currencies in the world – Venezulan bolivar and Suriname dollar.

At the Nigerian parallel market, the naira fell to its lowest level since the start of the new foreign exchange regime, trading at 363/$1 and 485 to the pound in Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The Euro traded above N390 in Lagos and under 380 in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

In 2016, the naira has lost 29.61 percent of its value on the official market, following the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow for a floating foreign exchange regime.

Currency performance

The top three performing currencies of 2016 are all universal currencies; Silver, Gold and Platinum, which have gained 45.93 percent, 25.11 percent and 22.79 percent respectively.

These currencies are followed by the Brazilian real, the Russian rubble and the Japanese Yen.

The best performers in Africa are South African rand, Zambian kwacha, Somali shilling and Botswana Pula, which have gained 8.88 percent, 8.69 percent, 5.54 percent and 4.95 percent respectively.

At the base of the African currencies are the naira, Mozambique new metical, Sierra Leone leone, and the Angolan kwanza.

The CBN remains “reasonably optimistic” that the naira would eventually settle at 250 to the dollar at the interbank market.

The local currency has been on the downward swing following a plunge in crude oil prices and a consequent decline in Nigeria’s foreign reserves.

That is only experienced in a sane clime, but generally speaking in Africa and Nigeria in particular there must be provisions in the budget for baggage handling, with special assistants and senior special assistants having their own P.As all to milk off the scarce resources we have.

We all are clamouring for positive change but The Holy Book has given a condition, that "if My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves...", you know the rest.

All over Nigeria all you find is pride in our hearts,or the subtle pseudo humility done to gain publicity.

This change must begin in our attitudes, for we are nothing but pencils in the eyes of the creator, why will a man feel good only when he sees his fellow men cleaning his shoes or slaving for him. Its a psychiatric disorder, its not a display of wealth, its a display of some mental disorder stemming from our complexes.

GOD AND NATURE RESISTS THE PROUD BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. Imagine the amount of resistance 180 +million people will face due to their collective pride.

I see a work history of "Assistance" rendered mostly in NGO's (very different from a serious business environment in scope and complexity), this woman would have been better fit to work as an assistant in that organization. Anyways congrats to her, its "chop I chop", while Nigeria suffers.

The food aids and good banks are gradually proliferating especially in the northern States.
When we warned on here that people will be queuing up for food they didn't listen now it's subtly finding its way into the daily lives of Nigerians no matter under what guise they want to paint it.
Just over a year ago, our basic need on average was internet of luxury and not good clothing nor shelter.
Fast forward to today, good is a basic need most families are struggling to meet, salaries and thus rents aren't being paid so shelter is becoming a challenge. Internet is a luxury, so basically only clothing is the need most Nigerians are meeting, andas per clothing I mean they are meeting just a basic need to cover, and not like they are covering as much as they would love to.
