Embattled reggae star, Majek Fashek who is currently at a rehab treatment center in Abuja for drug & alcohol addiction is scheduled to be released and return to Lagos in three weeks time.

And it looks like upon his release he is heading straight to the studio to work on some new music! Yay!

In an interview with Naij.com, the “Send down the rain” hitmaker said,


I want the whole world to see that this is the greatest comeback of all time. I’m coming back for real. Just wait and see. I will call you. I’m very okay now. Ise ti yato…(things have changed) Lagos and the whole world will feel me soon. There are many things I want to say, but let me come back first.”

A source also confirmed to the publication that Ayiri Emami, the Wari billionaire responsible for the singer’s Abuja rehab treatment has spent over N10 million on getting Fashek back on the right track.

Al Jazeera caught up with Basketmouth who they describe as the biggest comedy brand in nigeria. The news channel follows the comedian as he performs several events starting with at party in the most expensive community in Nigeria – Banana Island, Ikoyi.

During the 20 minute documentary we learn that one of the comedian’s major goals is to work hard enough to buy a house in Banana Island, a place inhabited by Nigeria’s super wealthy where the cheapest plot of land is $4 million and the cheapest house is $8 million.

None of the late Ooni of Ife – Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Olubuse II will be able to re-marry.

A palace chief divulged this interesting piece of information to the Nation, saying by Ife tradition the wives cannot re-marry after the demise of their husband, since the Ooni is not considered dead but to have transitioned to a higher realm. The late Ooni’s wives are Oloris Morisola, Ladun, Odunayo, Adedolapo and Linda and their ages are between 40’s and 60’s.

The chief who preferred to be anonymous maintains that the late Ooni still lives. He also said,


The rules is general and applies to all Oonis that have passed on and not peculiar to the wives of Oba Sijuwade, the immediate past Ooni. There may not be a clearly defined repercussion against the tradition but it is advisable that the order is obeyed at all times and for all generations. The best that can happen to the oloris left behind by any late Ooni is for them to remain single or be inherited by the reigning Ooni.

He added that it does not matter whether the wives are young or old, “what matters is that the tradition must be sustained in the overall interest of the society.”

It would appear that a couple of people on social media have been accusing the chairman of Five Star Music – Emeka Okonkwo aka E Money, of wanting to use Skiibii for money rituals and it backfired.

I never even heard the rumour, but yesterday Limpopo star KCee who is currently on a media tour to clean up the mess caused by the Skiibii death hoax, appeared on Wazobia FM where he shut down the money rituals rumour.

I’m disappointed with people on social media who said that my brother, E Money, used Skiibii for money rituals. What gets me even angrier is that now that he did not die, they are saying his head was too strong for the juju and that is why immediately I came into the country I decided to use this medium to clarify issues. I was on tour with my producer, Soso Soberekon in Norway when the purported rumour of Skiibii’s death broke.

Somebody called Soso to confirm the news and Soso called his boy who confirmed that Skiibii collapsed and was rushed to the hospital but he did not know what exactly was happening but it’s like Skiibii was dead and so he told the caller that skiibii was actually dead.

Since reggae star Majek Fashek started seeking treatment for his addiction issues, Charly Boy has been there to support him.

He recently appeared with the embattled reggae star at a press conference in Abuja addressing his drug & alcohol rehabilitation and the controversial music star is speaking about that event, asking the media & people in general to show mercy on not just Majek Fashek but public figures.

The other day I was at the Rain Makers (Majek’s) press conference, a little anxious but mostly excited about the personal progress made so far in regards to his physical well being. Anxious if the press in firing questions at Majek were going to be kind this time around or insensitive to his situation.

The questions where mostly directed to Majek and my colleagues in the media were gentle, till one of them had to voice out what was probably on the minds of most of them. I’m seeing a different picture in front of me, and I am pleasantly shocked at the way you have answered all questions thrown at you. I came here expecting to meet someone incoherent, confused and off track but I’m faced with someone who is not only articulate, but who understands what is happening to him and is desirous of a positive change. I’m glad I came here today or I wouldn’t have believed this.

It was Majek’s answer that inspired this piece.

MAJEK: ‘When I first started my music career, the media played a massive role in making me the rain maker. Sadly, they have also been an instrument to my predicament. I have played with a lot of reputable international stars and done a lot of positive stuffs, but this was never reported by the media in Nigeria. As I struggled with my addiction, the media hyped my struggle and made me feel more worthless than I already felt, because of my botched contract with Island Records.

I am hopeful that as I make this recovery journey, that you all will be kinder to me and report stories that would reflect my victory from my addiction.’

Over the years I (CharlyBoy) have been called all sorts of names, but I no send and I didn’t back down. Some of us don’t have that tough skin. Intolerance is alive and well these days, and many of us are accustomed to thoughtlessly passing judgment or speaking negatively about someone we do not understand or things too deep for our minds to grasp. It is time we take care not to pass judgment on people who are challenged in one way or the other, and people who are simply different.

Nollywood movies are made to educate/entertain the masses, like the movie DRY. Fictional characters like Charly Boy are created for the purpose of entertainment. Our entertainers, actors and actresses did not sign up to have their real lives splashed all over the place. Watching a friend or yourself deal with a dysfunctional marriage or going through serious challenges is heartbreaking, now, just imagine all of one’s fuckups plastered all over the papers for some Raz reporter’s screaming headline, because paper must sell. How would that make you feel? It is hard enough dealing with real life drama and these celebrities do not need to deal with it in front of a camera, or on the pages of the newspaper.

As for the need to write news about a ‘Public Figure’, how about using the media in making ‘Public Figures’ accountable for our stolen wealth by slizzy yahoo yahoo politicians, priority. Report about someone that has the power to effect change on real issues in our environment, I’m still waiting for The Change. Abegi, free me joor. The controversy trailing Five Star Music act – Skiibii’s death stunt isn’t going anywhere any time soon!

The Five Star music crew is currently on a mission to clean up the damage the death stunt of the 22 year old has caused! KCee, Harry Songz & the man at the center of the entire controversy Skiibii appeared on Nigerian radio station Cool FM, where they cleared the air on the death stunt.

Skiibii narrated what happened that day saying,

This thing that happened has happened to me in the past, like 3 times. It happens like a sudden blackout. I remember it happened to me once while I was flying on a plane with our producer, Del B. They had to shut down the plane. At that time, doctors (carried out a) heart scan on me and said I was ok, that the blackout happens when I’m too stressed or too excited. This past Friday, I was in my brother’s house in Surulere when it happened. I was actually about to open a door when it happened. I don’t know about the pictures that circulated because the photos were taken like 2 weeks ago in South Africa. I got discharged from the hospital on Monday, August 17, 2015 and they took me straight home. When I hear all the ‘Rest In Peace’ stories flying around

Regarding the death photo, KCee & Skiibii say they do not know who sent the picture out.

When asked what manager – Soso Sobrekon did when the story went viral. KCee says they were both travelling at the time but he got word from his boys in Nigeria who were close to the Skiibii that he may have passed, which is what prompted him to put up a candle light picture.

An emotional KCee also said during the interview, “I blame my manager. As we speak now I’ve fired him, because he can’t put people through this mess, because of one silly mistake, it’s not proper, it’s not professional”

Harrysong also said he blames Soso Sobrekon.

KCee also used the opportunity to apologize to the public.

Nigerian Broadcast Commission, the watchdog of all things broadcast on Nigerian airwaves is back again banning songs from the airwaves!

This time the usual offenders Wizkid, D’Banj are joined by Nicki Minaj, Tiwa Savage, Jhene Aiko and many more. On Air Personality Yaw of Wazobia FM posted the list of offending artistes and the reasons why they have been banned.

Davido’s Fans Mi was banned for promoting an ostentatious lifestyle, violence, drug trafficking and indecent exposure. Wizkid, Reminisce, Omarion’s Post To Be, Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” & others were banned for Vulgar Lyrics.

Don Jazzy seems to have the formula to making hit songs, from “No Long Thing” with D’Banj to Doro Bucci, Mo’ Hits days to present day – Mavin Records, the man seems to have the midas touch!

The 30 year old rarely ever gives interviews, but he recently took some time to chat with City People magazine about the secret behind all those hits, how he runs his organization to not going outside the box with his music.

Does he have the midas touch or does he just understand the Nigerian music market? Here’s what the Don said about making those back to back hits.


I don’t know about the Midas touch, but I think what it is, is that, I understand the market first, I also understand people to a large extent, the common problem with people in the industry is not really understanding the individuals they deal with, either the artiste of their staffs, I run a very beautiful organization where everyone is friends. We are family, I don’t come and start using veto power, because I am the boss, the greatest idea might come from the little guy there.

Sticking to the formula

So I listen to everybody and it works. As for music I try to experiment sometimes, but I don’t go out of the box to say I want to over experiment in a way that it is not what people want. If it is akara that you want to sell, it’s the akara that you will sell. You don’t have to start putting jam inside akara. Then it’s not akara anymore, it is something else, the least you can do is to put small pepper to taste, you cannot now go over outside the box and say you want to put your name on top of the akara and stuffs like that. Over the years there has been the kind of music Nigerians like. This is the kind of music my mother and my father dances to and their friends too, then we just stick to the formula and it works for us

Don Jazzy is a business man and he is giving his market what they want! Now that’s the formula!

Former president Goodluck Jonathan is currently on vacation with his wife Patience and two kids at the Mara Games Reserve in Kenya, but before he headed out on his retirement holiday he met with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, his first time back since vacating office on May 29th.

During the private meeting it was gathered that GEJ was immensely shocked when facts and figures about the corruption that went down during his administration were presented to him. According to the report gathered from the private meeting, he was quoted to have said that he’s just realizing this corruption for the first time, he apparently had no idea!


According to Mike Angelo News,

The meeting was at the instance of the 2015 Elections Peace Committee, after former President, Jonathan complained that President Buhari was not sticking to the peace accord they signed. Jonathan was reported to have also sought for understanding on alleged corrupt practices and mismanagement of funds under his administration, with a source saying the former President claimed he was hearing about some of the graft allegations for the first time.The report however claimed that President Buhari reportedly insisted that all looted funds must be returned to the nation’s coffers, adding that the President also restated his pledge that Jonathan had nothing to fear at all.

According to a source quoted by the report, the outcome of the meeting between Buhari and Jonathan formed the motive behind Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration at the weekend that the target of the administration’s anti-corruption war was not Jonathan.

The reporter was hosted by the 62 year old and his young wife at his Alagbado, Lagos residence and this what he had to say about the interesting encounter:


Throughout the interview session, he was of good cheer and took on questions with candour, even though, he took exceptions to answering some sensitive ones which he perceived as sheer effrontery to his private life. Nonetheless, he was a consummate host.

It was while the lively interview was going on when his wife, simply called Hajia showed up clad in the conventional veil Muslims call Hijab. On sighting her, the reporter invited her to join in the conversation but her reply nearly knocked her off the chair she was sitting, “Please leave me alone for now, Alhaji has just reduced me to near nothing in bed”, she said, obviously revealing they just had s*x.”

The reporter went in for the kill asking Hajiam if the Fuji Maestro is still very active in bed at his age. She replied, “Please leave me alone, this man can kill in bed. I don’t want to talk about it” she replied and retired into the inner rooms, looking truly worn out.”

Lolllllz Was the nacks that good that Hajia just had to spill all her private s*xual details with the reporter?

According to the report in his younger days news of his s*xual escapades were always front page news, instead of it bothering him, he reveled in it. So news that at 62 he’s still knocking his young wife’s socks off should bring a smile to his face…

Remember Classic Man Jidenna‘s comments last month about how being light skinned made him more likely to get kidnapped in Nigeria? After being dragged by Nigerians worldwide for his comments and trending on social media, the Nigerian/American artiste quickly cleared up his statement and being that we are a forgiving bunch we quickly embraced him again, after all it’s not every day a Nigerian has a song on Billboard’s Top 100.

The dapper rapper appeared on yesterday’s edition of Power 101.5’s Breakfast club with his Wondaland collective which includes Janelle Monae and Deep Cotton, where they were grilled by the show’s hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha god & Angela Yee.

During the course of the interview he was asked about the comments he made about light skin being more likely to get kidnapped and he explained himself better saying it was a miscalculation on his part. He also spoke on Nigeria being a very proud place, a place where excellence is fostered. He told a story about his late dad and his schools tests, saying

I remember coming to America, in the US you get a highest score on the test and your teacher says “bring it home to your parents. show your parents.” So I brought it home to my father like “dad I got a 98 on my math exam”, and he said “ah ah 98? Where are the other two points? Go there and bring them back, then I will celebrate with you” “And that’s how I grew up with everything I did, basketball, soccer, football. Everything that I played. In Nigeria its standard to try to check somebody if you see them making misstep. With the words that I said I didn’t make a miscalculation in my experience, but I can see how certain people perceive that

What I said was…I was referring to my mixed heritage, and being a man who may be perceived as more valuable because you are light skinned, because you look really closer to a white man which all around the world, a white man, the white man is perceived as more valuable. Unfortunately light skinned is often perceived as more valuable. So my comments were referring to that. When I went home to bury my father it was the highest kidnapping time in our area, the area that I am from, the South East Nigeria. So my family in the village was concerned about me burying my father so they said “look you have to take extra precautions this time because one-you are a foreigner, you are coming from America, and then two- your appearance is going to make you a target” “So my comments were revolving around that but some people took it as me believing that I am more valuable or believing that light skinned people are kidnapped more than others, and it wasn’t really about that. It was about a perception of wealth

On having fears about going to Nigeria following the success of Classic Man. Jidenna said,

No I am not afraid at all. I am not really afraid of standing anywhere. I have always stood out, and I will always stand anywhere. In fact already the Nigerian community embrace me. They have from the beginning, and they do today. That little miscommunication on Vlad TV is pretty much dead and gone right now. I just did a show with some great Nigerian, Nigerian-American artistes a couple of weeks ago in Jamaica, Queens so that show went well

There are a lot of myths about the in the Nigerian music industry, and most of them border on the acceptability, ‘sellability’, and possible success of Hiphop to the Nigerian audience. We’ve heard some of the big names make negative statements about the viability of rap music in this part of the world, yet surprisingly, their sudden interest in Dr Dre’s “Straight Outta Compton” project is evidence that deep down inside, they’re still Hiphop heads.

I’ve seen a couple of Nigeria’s top rappers sell short into the Pop life, and it’s so embarrassing, I can’t look them in the face. Some have made money, and termed it success, others have failed woefully, and can’t find their way back to who they were.

When I heard, from Tosin Adeda, that A-Q was releasing the “Son Of John 2” album, I knew finally, there was something I could point to, and say that is Hiphop. After weeks of deliberation and advice, the artiste decided to drop the album on Spinlet for just N50. Although, I preferred having it on iTunes for $10 (N2,000), but A-Q had his strategy geared towards encouraging more youngsters in Nigeria to try out the album.

After successful sales of the album to the target audience for a few weeks, the rapper put together a “Son Of John Concert” with virtually every Hiphop disciple in Nigeria billed to attend. Honestly, when I first saw the flier, I scoffed. There were no big spending sponsors, no support from any of the top media houses, it wasn’t being held in Eko Hotel, Intercontinental or any of those venues which had a tendency to naturally draw the Lagos party crowd. This concert was being hosted at Elysium Night Club, Piccadilly Suites in Lekki, but that too was a strategy. Make the tickets cheap, get the Hiphop faithfuls in, and keep the uninitiated out.

I got my regular ticket online via Afritickets, which aside from listing it on their website, did little to market the event and sell tickets. The venue was where the real magic was, the crowd outside the hall at Piccadilly Suites was no different from the massive mobs usually seen at Hollywood movie premieres.

DJ Lo, Boogey, A-Q, and Weird MC were early, however, the show didn’t start till late. Eclipse, High-M, Blaqbonez, Fatboi, PayBac, Kursor, Butafly, Pasha, Cyclone, Peter Clarke, Efa Iwara, and other rappers you wouldn’t know unless you were in the Nigerian hiphop circles. Also Godwon, Terry Tha Rapman, Cyrus Tha Virus and Jesse Jagz. As much as I never wish to subjectively give any rapper credit over the other, I’ve got to say the performances Weird Mc and Jesse Jagz were a notch above the others by a stroke of experience.

Realizing what an amazing show the Son Of John Concert was about to become, I decided to cancel my regular ticket, and purchased a VIP ticket at the venue. Switched from ateendee mode to “I cam to paty”. It was quite an impressive event, one of the most entertaining I’ve been to this year, and I hope next year, it’ll be there for more people like me to enjoy.

Now, as with everything else in this world, I noticed some flaws in the #SOJConcert, as it was tagged on Social Media. The first issue started with the marketing of the album. Spinlet, for instance, sold albums online to fans of A-Q who came on their platform looking for it, but did not market it to the wider hiphop community which would have appreciated the album, and looked forward to the concert. Another issue is the lack of adequate funding from sponsors, who considered a hiphop concert of this size too experimental to invest in. I would have thought the artist himself would ensure he had generated adequate sales of albums, then invest that in the concert which the aftermath would’ve been more album sales. Then there was Afritickets, which just like Spinlet played the role of an acquisition platform for the tickets, just like Spinlet played the role of a music acquisition platform rather than mainly a marketing platform. The album and the tickets for Son Of John were merely listed on these platforms rather than being mass marketed the way Jumia or Konga would have handled it.

Soundcheck was not done at the venue prior to the day of the event, and this was the main cause of the delays witnessed on the evening of the event. Sound equipment had to be adjusted for hours before the performances could kick off. Some of the big stars billed to perform at the event made last minute change of mind, most likely because they weren’t being paid milllions of Naira for the night.

The event itself was a success, as tickets were sold by an army of A-Q’s fans, friends, and supporters, who also bought tickets themselves, the venue was packed, and the performances were amazing. This brings me to the final issue I had with the organizers of the concert, being lack of post-event awareness. It’s been 2 weeks since the biggest, and most successful Nigerian hiphop concert this year, and those who weren’t there, or weren’t aware, have no clue what they missed. Sponsors who declined partnering on this event have not been shown why they should be eager to foot the bill next year, and media houses are yet to understand how much entertainment content they lost out on.

Going forward, rappers need to understand that they are rappers, not just entertainers, or cross-over artistes, their art is rap, and everyone owes a duty to keep their art alive. When you’re called to perform a service in sustaining your art, answer, and be there. Organize your concerts professionally, ensure that marketers and promoters market and promote, and where they’re unable, get alternative marketers and promoters. Prepare the venue thoroughly, check equipment and sound at least a day before the event. After a successful event, showcase it to the world, so that your post-event publicity will be the pre-event promotion for the next concert you hold.

I’m still looking forward to the videos, and photos from the Son Of John Concert, I had a great time, and I wish others who weren’t there will at least have a glimpse of how it went down.
