M E Niger Delta. If the FG had even considered giving each senatorial district in the Delta an oil bloc may be things would have been better
This is a hypothetical question cos it has never been done, so u cant say that things might not have been better if they werent really tried.
A more pertinent question is what did the criminal organization called MEND do to address the trillions of naira that the ND governors steal on a monthly basis? How have the masses benefited from all the money their governors have been paid for the past 8 years? How many governor's mansions have been bombed by MEND?

The answer to these questions will provide answers to your question.

@Beaf, Danjuma and the rest of the thieving old fools should leave the scene for young progressives. I've told you several times that we have a common enemy, the elite, including Northerners, Southerners, Easterners, and Westerners.

All the above are lies.
The Aaron group was created by MEND and they represent MEND and MEND alone.

MEND represents the Niger Delta. It is propagandists and the real criminals that want to make MEND out to be like them.
Wole Soyinka represents MEND and indeed visited Yar Adua in the company of Henry Okah quite a few times.
Stop calling Soyinka a liar, he has stated clearly several times that he represents the Niger Delta people and not the criminal acts of MEND. Stop tarnishing the man's reputation, olodo

Very valid question, would a nobel laurette like Soyinka agree to be a voice to criminals ?
The federal government refused to negotiate with MEND, a criminal organization that continues to perpetrate criminal acts againsts Nigerians and foreigners alike.

The Aaron group, which Soyinka is a member is not the same as MEND! The Aaron group is made up of respectable Nigerians who have agreed to negotiate with the federal government on behalf of the people of the Niger Delta, as opposed to the criminal organization, MEND.

Soyinka has stated on several ocasions that he does not represent MEND or their criminal activities, but instead will represent the people of Niger Delta in these negotiations.

Make no mistake about it, MEND is a criminal organization which is beginning to disintegrate according to recent reports. The cause of the Niger Delta people will remain, but MEND is already dying.

I won't claim to be the most knowledgable about the war. Mine is just an inquiry.

But does any Igbo person feel perhaps Ojukwu might have surrendered earlier
than he did?
This is a very valid question. I'd be very much interested in the thoughts of well meaning and level headed Igbo posters. There may actually be a valid reason why Ojukwu chose to allow millions of people to die instead of surrendering early. No one has answered that question for me - most responders have chosen to rather tell us why Ojukwu is the leader of Igbos today.

Ojukwu is indeed the Igbo leader. He is infact the most powerful Igbo man alive in Nigeria today, he is loved and revered by the Igbos.

But why did he not surrender as soon as it became obvious that Biafra had been blockaded?  If this was a mistake, why can't any of our Igbo posters just say so? The man is only human, one mistake cannot take away his greatness.

When did you start yarning dust like this?
These people claim to be representing the North, while pushing every unprogressive agenda. Simple question; do they represent you or do they represent the ills I mentioned?
Why would you jump up in defence of criminals, just because they make a wooly claim to claim to represent the "North". Which North indeed?
Beef, your intellectual dishonesty and bigotery in this matter is quite disgraceful.  The report posted by the OP stated clearly that 60 members of the Northern Caucus in the House of Representatives met Tuesday night at the Apo residence of former House Leader, Hon Abdul Ningi and resolved to withdraw support from Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, if he dissolves the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

And yet you come here asking dum.b questions? Who else would 60 members of the House of Reps, represent? Niger Delta thugs?

You are quick to call 60 members of the House of Reps criminals while singing praises of known criminal organizations such as MEND who continue to kidnap, kill, destroy property, and perpetrate other criminal activities. Your hypocrisy and bigotery is sickening, I thought you were more level headed than this.

Well meaning NLers have distanced themselves from the statement of the 60 members, yet you continue to directly and indirectly insult Arewa.  Don't let your tribalism and bigotery negatively affect your otherwise good judgement, olodo.

MEND and these ND thugs do not seem interested in peace at all. Any action that will hinder their criminal activities including kidnapping, bunkering and the like, is rejected by their thieving leaders. Finally, reputable Ijaw and other ND leaders are beginning to call them to order

Niger Delta Think Tank Business Group, a forum of top opinion leaders in the oil region led by Festus Porbeni, former transport minister and a retired rear admiral, has described as “heinous” the stand of a faction of militants on the acting president, Goodluck Jonathan.

A faction of the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC) which claims to coordinate the collation of groups including the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) had told a news agency that the National Assembly resolution making a fellow Niger Deltan acting president was illegal.

“Goodluck Jonathan’s acting presidency is an illegality cleverly crafted by those who feel that the Niger Delta is a conquered territory and can only be plundered and looted,” the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC) said in an emailed statement to the international news agency when Jonathan assumed the position of acting president, last week. “We are even more convinced than before that Niger Delta independence through armed struggle is the way forward.” Militants

The stand by the JTC contradicted that of MEND which had told newsmen that it chose to watch developments and would react at the appropriate time, but called the situation an “unfolding drama”.

Spokesperson for MEND, Jomo Gbomo, in a reply to BusinessDay’s inquiry, said: “We have no comments for now. The group is monitoring the unfolding drama and will make its position known at the appropriate time”.

The Think Tank Business Group, however, said “this recent rant is not the reflection of the Niger Delta people. The Nigerian parliament made up of the Senate and House of Representatives is the custodian of the Nigerian law, thus, could not have erred in passing a joint resolution making Goodluck the acting president and commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The Niger Delta Think Tank hereby calls on the faction of MEND that made such heinous statement to retract and support Goodluck Jonathan in building a united Nigeria.”

It was not uncommon to see men, women and young boys burnt alive with tyres round their necks accused of being saboteurs of the war effort.

A covert ethnic cleansing policy was fully operational then, the evidence abounds today in present day Rivers and Bayelsa State where Igbo villages have sprung up in areas that where once a sea of Ijaws and Ibibio’s villages. The ethnic composition of these areas bears no semblance to what it was in the 17th and 18th century. [/color]
hmm, could reports that 973 (and likely more) Ikwerres have died between 2003-2008 because of attacks by militant groups such as MEND and Atiku Tom, be reprisal attacks or revenge based?

We know that many Ijaws and other folks from ND fought on both sides of the war, so it is not unreasonable to believe that the Ijaws (and other ND people) caught to be fighting/working for the federal troops would be severely dealt with in the manner you described above. We'll need more evidence of the covert ethnic cleansing you described, I have to admit that I can't put that past the likes of Afam and other extremists. Let me restate the statement you chose to ignore:

Soon enough, you people will learn to take responsibility for your own actions and future. You cannot continue to kill ND Ndiigbo at will on the one hand while blaming them for not supporting criminal MEND or helping you to secede on the other. Ndiigbo will not help you fight anyone. In addition, stop blaming all of Arewa for your woes - the criminal elite, including your governors are more responsible for your demise than the lovely Arewa people.

biggjoe:
Now you are wrong there. Many igbo people have disagreed openly with the way Ojukwu handled the war but that does not necessarily include why he did not surrender when Biafra was 'blockaded'. Alexander Madiebo even put his own cricticisms in his book.

Dont go on and on blaming ojukwu for continued fighting as if he is the one firing the bombs and mortars. It was your brothers who are commanding the nigerian troops. There is no rule of engagement that says that if a region you are fighting is not surrendering, you must massively and indiscriminately shell the area which you are aware have innocent civilians there. They should have approached tactically like soldiers do and not indiscriminately firing mortars and rockets from hundreds of kilometers. That is what killed many igbo people during the war. Apart from the Murtala muhammad's genocide in Asaba and elsewhere, those are the war Crimes committed on the biafrans.

You should blame the people committed genocide on the biafrans and not the biafran leaders.
Mallam biggjoe, I think biafran leaders should be blamed for the self imposed genocide. Don't take my word for it, just read an excerp from Time magazine and make up your mind:

DURING a full year of civil war in Nigeria, the secessionist state of Biafra has banked more on winning the world's sympathy than a military victory. Last week the Biafrans had an undeniable claim to attention—and to pity. Malnutrition was killing off more Biafrans than the Federal troops who occupy most of their land. The chief killer was the protein- deficiency disease called kwashiorkor, which turns the hair to reddish gold and cruelly swells both limbs and stomachs. Workers of international relief agencies reported that as many as 3,000 Biafrans a day were dying and that total deaths might reach 2,000,000 by the end of August.

The Nigerian military government, headed by Major General Yakubu Go- won, accuses the Biafrans of purposely allowing suffering for the sake of "waging psychological war and seeking diplomatic advantage." The government points out that the Biafrans, led by Lieut. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu, have turned down a plan to have the Red Cross ship food through federal territory to Biafra. But Gowon insists on federal handling of any such shipments, and the Biafrans fear that his men would poison the food: they cite instances of beer laced with cyanide and powdered milk infected with bacteria found in Biafra. Even if Gowon allows the shipment, says Biafran Chief Justice Louis Mbanefo, "we would not touch it."

Ojukwu has also said no to a British offer of $600,000 in relief funds. His reason: Britain sells arms to Gowon. Therefore, says Ojukwu, to give food at the same time would only "fatten the Biafrans for slaughter with British-made weapons

People like that create a terrible impression (same as Balla Na' Allah who wanted all 20 million Niger Deltans wiped out).
I am sure we can live together in peace, but for people who see themselves as superior to the next person, so much so that lives cost nothing; infact whole communities (50+) have been razed to the ground and tens of thousands killed over the decades.
Beaf, intellectual dishonesty has never been your trait hitherto.  I've said countless of times on this forum that the common enemy we all have is the elite, who come from North, South, East, and  West.  Your attempt at marginalizing me on this forum by name calling and other childish means, will not work.

I believe that soon enough, many of the ND issues will be addressed by the FG particularly now that Jonathan is in charge.  We shall see what explanation the thieving and oil bunkering wing of MEND will give to justify their crimes thereafter.

Soon enough, you people will learn to take responsibility for your own actions and future.
