Politics › Re: Wrong Or Misguided Statement On North And South Regarding Yar'adua And His Peopl by nduchucks: 6:59pm On Mar 01, 2010
Beaf:
The greatest problem the North has is that people like, Tanko Yakasai, Turai and her demons etc, claim to be fighting for the "Northern interest".
If the average Northerner does not scream "not in my name", there is little they can say to convince Southerners. There is no Southern decease, it is a genuine discomfort at the behaviour of powerful Northern politicians. Lets not bury our head in the sand.

As I said on another thread, I have never in my life heard of a term like "Southern interest", so why do we continue to hear about "Northern interest"? shocked
Or is the North bigger than Nigeria? Or is it a separate entity?

You can't eat your cake and have it.
Beaf, You of all people should know that in democratic settings, there exists interest groups that fight for their collective interests.  There is nothing wrong with that and even you are free to form your own interest group.  It should not concern you that certain people including the elite, form interest groups and fight for whatever cause they choose.  Learn from them and do the same - these elite are counting on the fact that you have no guts to form such interest groups, they also hope that your rants are limited to the internet where they remain impotent.

I will remind you once again that the elite who claim to be working for the interest of Northerners, for the most part, work for their own personal interests. Its the same game in every corner of the nation. If it pains you that no interest group exists that fights for "Southern Interests", then form one and stop complaining, olodo.

@naijaking1, Sanusi has the law on his side, I remember you all ranting about the illegality of Sanusi's actions. Sooner or later, your people will go to jail. Let's hope you've read about this. The usual suspects refused to publicize it in the newspapers they own:

N620bn bailout: Court strikes suit against Sanusi

A Federal High Court in Lagos has struck out a suit challenging the decision by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to disburse about N620 billion to some ailing banks as bailout funds.

The suit filed last year by a member of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila had the CBN and its governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as defendants.

Although the judge, Justice Binta Nyako, held that the plaintiff has the locus standi to file the case, she identified some defects in it, which formed the basis of her decision.

As against the defendants’ argument that the plaintiff lacked the right to sue having failed to show that he suffered any special injury different from that suffered by other members of the public, the judge held that he could sue in view of his status.

Justice Nyako held that as a member of the National Assembly who swore to protect the Constitution, he had the right to sue in challenge of the defendants’ action where it is felt that such action constituted a breach of the Constitution.

The judge struck out a substantial portion of the affidavit supporting the originating summons on the ground that the information contained therein offended certain provisions of the Evidence Act.

In striking out the suit, Justice Nyako held that having struck out a substantial part of the affidavit supporting the originating summons, there was nothing left for her to determine in the substantive suit.

The plaintiff had urged the court to determine whether the CBN Act and the Banks and Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) authorised the defendants to raise money and disburse same without the consent of the National Assembly.

Obama will get a response from Nigeria promptly. Nigerians will find out the truth about Yar'Adua's health in the process.

Obama's demands are simply to put pressure on the government to release the information to the Nigerian public - Only a fool or the naive will believe that the Saudis have not yet fully briefed Obama and the US intelligence agencies.

Politics › Soludo’s Banking Consolidation A Sham – Sanusi by nduchucks(op): 4:17am On Mar 01, 2010
The banking consolidation exercise carried out by the then governor of the central bank Prof. Charles Soludo has come under fire from the current CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who said the exercise was a sham and that many of the banks never raised the capital which they claimed they did.
Sanusi in a 23-page convocation lecture titled, “The Nigerian Banking Industry: What Went Wrong and the Way Forward” he delivered at the Convocation Square of Bayero University Kano on Friday said the consolidation  helped to create bigger banks while it failed to overcome the fundamental weakness in corporate governance in many banks.

The governor said, “A lot of the capital supposedly raised by these so-called ‘mega-banks’ was fake capital financed from depositors’ funds. 30 per cent of the share capital of Intercontinental Bank was purchased with customer deposits. Afribank used depositors’ funds to purchase 80 per cent of its IPO. ”    shocked  shocked  shocked

He added, “The CEO of Oceanic Bank controlled over 35 per cent of the bank through SPVs (Special Purpose Vehicles) borrowing customer deposits. The collapse of the capital market wiped out these customer deposits amounting to hundreds of billions of naira.”   shocked  shocked  shocked

Sanusi also disclosed that while all the unethical practices were going on in the banking sector, the CBN which had a process of capital verification at the beginning of consolidation which was targeted at avoiding bubble capital stopped the check mechanism for unexplained reasons.   shocked  shocked  shocked

He noted that SPVs furnished bank executives with a leeway to lend money to themselves for stock price manipulation or the purchase of estates all over the world. “One bank borrowed money and purchased private jets which we later discovered were registered in the name of the CEO’s son. In another bank the management set up 100 fake companies for the purpose of perpetrating fraud,” he said. shocked shocked shocked

He further said that some banks even engaged in manipulating their books by colluding with other banks to artificially enhance financial positions and therefore stock prices, adding that practices such as converting non-performing loans into commercial papers and bank acceptances and setting up off-balance sheet special purpose vehicles to hide losses were prevalent.

According to the CBN boss, the unethical practices took place under the watchful eyes of the former Governor Soludo, whom he said conducted governance at the apex bank in a “laissez-faire” fashion. He said under Soludo’s reign, internal processes were unstructured and this compromised the CBN’s ability to supervise the industry. Board agendas were set by the governor and consequently reflected his priorities, and there were inadequate committee structures and processes to ensure the CBN board’s independence in assessing whether the CBN was fulfilling its mission.  He also explained that of the 373 circulars issued by the CBN since 2008, only 44 addressed issues relating to the crisis, stressing that “none addressed the issue of corporate governance.

Politics › Re: Jonathan Has Not Seen Yar'adua! by nduchucks: 2:36am On Mar 01, 2010
According to this report Jonathan has seen Yar'Adua:

New revelations about the medical condition of Nigeria’s sickly leader Umaru Yar’Adua who was smuggled back to Nigeria on Wednesday morning under cover of darkness, indicate he can barely move, nor communicate. The new findings buttress earlier reports by Saharareporters exclusively two years ago that Churg Strauss Syndrome, a debilitating auto–immune disease and lately lung cancer, ravages Yar’Adua.

Signs the game for Yar’Adua’s greedy and ambitious wife, Hajia Turai, may be drawing to a close came as service chiefs in the Nigerian Armed Forces requested that **Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan be allowed to see Yar’Adua.

A source knowledgeable about the happenings in the Presidential Villa where Yar’adua is holed up, told Saharareporters that Goodluck Jonathan has met Yar’adua in the company of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sarki Mukthar. The two men are said to have encountered the shock of a wasted Yar’Adua who was not only barely conscious but incapable of conversation or movement.

There was, however, a different report tonight which denied that Jonathan has had a meeting with Yar’Adua. But our presidency source asserted that Jonathan did make the "top secret" visit, and that he was so affected by Yar’Adua’s condition he suffered fainting spells. He was reportedly “stabilized’ by Saudi doctors attending to Yar’Adua

@Ndu_Chuks, The Constitution clearly states that the president must inform the senate any time he/she is flying out of the country 4 medical or leisure reasons, Yaraua didn`t do this, that is a clear violation of the Nigerian Constitution which he swear ed to up hold. Violation of the Constitution I think is enough grounds to start impeaching procedure. But if the president was in no position to write when he became ill, then he wouldn`t be guilty as he was not in a position to write. What does the Constitution say when this happens? If there is no provision in the Constitution for such common eventuality, then i would say the Constitution is weak and not well thought out.

If The BBC interview can be taken as evidence of a written latter by Yaradua, then it shows he was able at some point able to communicate directly to the Nigerian Senate of his absence, but rather chose not to and instead chose to communicate with a foreign press. This is the disrespect not just to the senators but to the people of Nigeria, we are being taken for a ride.

If the great law minds were following the Constitution we would already have the motion to impeach in place by now. Unless it can be proven that Yaradua as been incapacitated since the first day of his illness. Then again we would have to look at what the Constitution says, this might be the real problem and not knowing his condition.
Good write-up. The bottom line is that there are too many unknowns at the moment. Sooner or later, the truth shall become known.

The only thing we may be sure of, is that Yar'Adua is gravely ill and is in Nigeria at the moment. The right thing to do is to provide him with the best possible health care we can muster. I agree with you that our constitution needs to be reworked in certain very important areas.

When Yar Adua went to visit George Bush at the White House, he drank tea, eat cakes, saw wonderful hedges and suddenly decided Africom was a very good thing indeed. Whereas, in public, he and other African leaders had been "strongly" opposed to the presence of US troops on African soil.
We shall partner AFRICOM to assist not only Nigeria but also the African continent to actualise its peace and security initiatives. It is an initiative to have standby forces in each of the regional economic groupings in Africa

You try to claim and imply that MEND is the only organization that represents the cause of ND, to the extent that you claim that Soyinka is representing MEND rather than the cause of the ND people - this is very disingenuous of you.  Asari is one of your leaders who probably is not associated with MEND because he wants to dissociate himself from their terrorist activities.

Whether Asari is a member of MEND or not is not germane to the point I was making. The bottom line is that, all your so-called millitants that are terrorists including the terrorist wing of MEND will be properly dealt with by Africom, if and when they arrive.

In case you don't know, Africom is more interested in Islamic extremism up North these days. Like I mentioned to sjeezy, a recent Africom intelligence report that say's Northern Nigeria is likely to become the next Pakistan. MEND has always reached out to the US, so there's no need raising alarming gist. The most important partnership right now is to root out Boko Harams and set the country on the right path. MEND is made up of graduates, unlike Boko Haram and other almajiri groups.
Keep deceiving yourself. MEND is a terrorist organization that has perpetrated terrorism againsts its own people and foreigners alike. Even your very own Asari Dakubo, is correctly named Alhaji Asari Dokubo - bet you didn't know he is an Al Haji.  Africom with treat him with the respect he deserves.   cheesy

ndu_chucks - fear for where?  I am against all forms of foreign military intervention and interference with our sovereignty.

Secondly, strategically you could learn a thing or two because events are passing you by.

MEND, your enemies are represented by Wole Soyinka and other well meaning Nigerians, Save Nigeria Group is also represented by Wole Soyinka and a cross section of Nigerians. The emancipation struggle is being embraced by all sections of the country, north, east, south and west.
The ideals of MEND/NDVPF are gradually crossing over into the main stream.
MOST Nigerians believe in the cause of the ND people - the same cause that Soyinka represents. Soyinka does not represent MEND or endorse any of MEND's terrorist activities. Get that through your skull, stop attempting to tarnish the man's image. I thought we've discussed this already - maybe it was Beaf that I straightened out earlier.
