President Muhammadu Buhari says with the insurgency in the northeast and the security crisis in the south-south, his government is fighting on many fronts. Speaking at a joint press conference with Faure Gnassingbe, president of Togo, who paid him visit at the presidential villa on Thursday, Buhari said it was not easy fighting insurgency and providing infrastructure. “As for Nigeria, we are grateful for the sympathy and the goodwill expressed, touching on the performance of our armed forces and law enforcement agencies, since this administration came into being. It is is not easy trying to fight on so many fronts, the northeast, the south- south and then try to provide infrastructure in our country,” he said.''Since the cooperation of the regional countries comprising Cameroun, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic, we have identified our problem and achieved positive results in terms of isolation of Boko Haram and giving a chance to peace. “Bilaterally, we’re trying to see how we can come closer together as he (Gnassingbe) has explained because having being there longer than myself, he’s more exposed, both in regional and on African Union level. But first and foremost, we must identify our problem and the first thing is security. We must secure our region, otherwise sustainable development will be impossible. “You’ve just heard him say how much is lost to piracy and Nigeria cannot afford to lose that. So, there is need for cooperation amongst the African countries. We’ll continue to discuss and do our best to resolve regional issues. The most important thing is that we must pay attention to agriculture and manufacturing so that everybody can be employed and then we’ll have much less problem.” https://www.thecable.ng/fighting-many-fronts-not-easy-says-buhari |
President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday that it is not easy for his administration which, he said, is fighting on many fronts. According to him, the government is confronting the insurgency problem in the North-East and oil theft in the South-South while trying to provide basic infrastructure in the country at the same time. Buhari, who made this observation when President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo visited the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Thursday to invite him to a security summit in Togo in November, 2015, pointed out that development would be impossible without security. He, therefore, called for cooperation among African countries to combat terrorism, piracy and other security challenges facing the sub- region. The Nigerian leader also stressed the need for African countries to pay closer attention to agriculture and manufacturing to provide jobs for unemployed youths. He also expressed appreciation for Gnassingbe’s visit and for his concern about regional security, Boko Haram insurgency, oil theft, illegal fishing, oil pollution and the dumping of toxins. “His (Gnassingbe’s) concern about regional security made it imperative for him to organise a summit on maritime security and development in November to examine a lot of issues. “As for Nigeria, we are grateful for the sympathy and the goodwill expressed, touching on the performance of our armed forces and law enforcement agencies, since this administration came into being. It is not easy trying to fight on so many fronts, the North-East, the South- South and then try to provide infrastructure in our country”, Buhari said. The president observed that the cooperation of the regional countries comprising Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic had resulted in the isolation of Boko Haram and a chance of peace in the region. Speaking earlier, the Togolese leader commended his host and the Nigerian security forces for the work they are doing to combat terrorism in West Africa. President Gnassingbe informed Mr. Buhari that the security summit being hosted by his country would deal with issues of piracy, oil theft, environmental pollution, immigration, as well as human and drug trafficking. When asked by State House correspondents if African countries were not hosting too many summits, Gnassingbe disagreed, saying the summits were not enough. He said, “Piracy alone costs the Gulf of Guinea $7billion a year, that is what we lose for not combatting it and we also know that without cooperation you cannot combat piracy, but the first stage is to come together and talk. “If all the African countries are on the same page, it would be easy to tackle the security challenges, so we have to keep holding summits, because individual countries cannot combat piracy effectively without cooperation. “If you try to fight them in Togo, they go to the next country, then you don’t have the mechanism to go into the other countries. So summits are necessary, they are not even sufficient”. www.informationng.com/2015/09/its-not-easy-fighting-terrorism-oil-theft-and-provision-of-infrastructure-at-the-same-time-buhari-says.html |

By Anthony Ogbonna All Progressive Congress (APC) Chieftain, Bola Tinubu has debunked the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that President Buhari and APC are dictatorial. Tinubu gave the dismissal on Wednesday while fielding questions from State House correspondents in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu, however said that PDP members should rather commend the president for stimulating growth in the economy across the states. “He was elected on a platform of democracy and he has adhered to rule of law so far. What is dictatorship about what he has done? He has helped to stimulate the economy in the various states and that is where the people are,’’ he said. Tinubu also accused PDP members for being the cause of the nation’s corrupt state which APC has come to clean up. “If they don’t have anything to say, they rather be quiet. They created what is wrong here today and we cannot sweep that under the carpet. There must be rule of law.’’ Also, the APC chieftain dismissed the claims that some APC top-shots, including him; former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar and the former national chairman of the party, Mr. Bisi Akande were engaged in political struggle over the party’s Board of Trustees’ position. “Don’t listen to rumours, there is no struggle. Our party is not even looking at the direction of power struggle or anything of such. “The support structure is to encourage and support the President as you have heard from Chief Bisi Akande, to help him institutionalise his goal, principle and vision for a new Nigeria,’’ he added Mr Tinubu, who was accompanied by Mr. Akande, refuted the insinuation that he was at the presidential villa to discuss ministerial list to be announced by the president before the end of the month. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/buhari-not-dictatorial-atiku-akande-i-not-in-political-struggle-tinubu/ |

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has asked the state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to advice the governors elected on the platform of their party to first of all declare their assets before shamefully demanding for that of the Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose. According to the ruling party in the state, until the opposition party do this they should remain in the wilderness of foolishness where their likes belongs as its expected that a party peopled by intelligent persons should know that you can only ask question on what you are not guilty of. In a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr Jackson Adebayo in Ado Ekiti in reaction to the purported demand by the opposition party that the Governor of the State, Mr Ayo Fayose should declare his assets, the PDP asserted that the declaration made by President Muhammadu Buhari contained many loopholes which no sensible being should be proud of. Adebayo stated that the declaration made by Buhari cannot be compared to that made by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua which till date has been adjudged as a perfect declaration by any Nigerian President. www.informationng.com/2015/09/ask-apc-governors-to-declare-their-assets-first-ekiti-pdp-tells-opposition.html |

By Ediri Ejoh & Bartholomew Madukwe The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has said that the construction of the long awaited 2nd Niger Bridge is still on course. This is contained in a statement signed and made available to newsmen by Acting Head Corporate Communication ICRC Ms Debora Okafor in Abuja. Okafor disputed reports that the project was “on hold’’, “stalled”, “ being probed” or even “suspended”.it will be recalled that the Director-General Aminu Diko recently briefed President Buhari and the media on the status of the bridge, which had since then received negative publicity. Diko had said “During My visit with the President I expressed concerns about project cost vis-à-vis projected toll fees and engagement of community stakeholders whose land would be affected along the bridge’s right of way. The commission would like to see the Niger Bridge completed to alleviate the plight travelers face on that route, especially during festivities. Festive holidays “We know that it is critical, we also know how Nigerians suffer during festive holidays and we hear people sleep on that old bridge. The time has come to bring succor to Nigerians.’’ Diko said as a Public private Partnership, the project must pass through various checks to satisfy the Federal Government and investors alike of its viability and also to ensure people got value for money. Diko said that apart from the Niger Bridge, ICRC was working with private partners on the Lagos- Ibadan expressway, the Sagamu-Ore-Benin road and the Murtala Mohammed road. He added that the three Deep Seaports at Akwa Ibom, Lekki, and Badagry and also the agriculture silos and hydro power were some of the projects the commission was working on. “ All these projects are important to the nation and it is in our interest that they are successful. Most importantly, our duty is not only to oversee the provision of quality infrastructure services, but also to ensure that the nation and citizens are not shortchanged the shortchanged by investors.’’ source: www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/2nd-niger-bridge-is-ongoing-icrc/
