… Clears air on pensions, others By Wole Balogun, Ado Ekiti Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose, has disclosed that the state only got N9.6 billion out of the over N29 billion it applied for in the Federal Government’s bail-out funds for states. The governor, who spoke on Monday in Ikogosi-Ekiti during the opening ceremony of a two-day retreat for commissioners, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies, also said out of the N5.6 billion applied for by the 16 local governments in the state, the Federal Government only approved N991 million. In a statement in Ado-Ekiti by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor made the clarification following insinuations that the state government did not want to pay pensions arrears and gratuities of retirees. “You people know that I don’t hide anything from you when allocations come. We applied for N29 billion from the bail-out fund. It was to cover the August and September 2014 salary arrears left by the Fayemi government, leave bonus, pensions, gratuities and others. But for reasons we don’t know yet, only N9.6 billion was for salaries, leaving other issues. “The 16 local governments applied for N5.6 billion and we did all the necessary papers and presented them to the appropriate authorities, but only N991 million was approved. We were later told by the Central Bank of Nigeria that about 14 states had similar problem with the small amount approved for local governments. We have nothing to hide and people should appeal to the FG to release the money in full. We know it is loan that we will repay with nine per cent interest,” he said. The governor also explained that the state had experienced a sharp decline in monthly allocations in recent time. “Last month we had a shortfall of N500 million and this month we have a shortfall of N600 million. 29 September 2015 Your height is a simple biological fact that you can do little to change, yet it may be influencing your destiny in ways you didn’t realise. BBC Future combed through the evidence to size up its impact on everything from your sexual allure to your bank account and your lifespan. Money and power At 6ft 4in (193cm), Abraham Lincoln would tower above Barack Obama – but even he is around 3in (8cm) taller than the average American. Confirming the correlation, a recent study found that taller candidates do indeed tend to receive more votes. Beyond the race to the White House, taller men and women are considered to be more dominant, healthy, and intelligent , and are more likely to be chosen for more competitive jobs; they also earn more money . It could be that we naturally associate height with “greatness” and “dominance” – two traits that are important for leadership. But height also reflects nutrition as a child – so perhaps it simply acts as a more general indicator of your upbringing, which may in turn influence your education and success later in life. Not all high achievers are giants among men, of course (Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King exuded charisma despite being on the short side). But on the basis of first impressions alone, taller people may have the edge. Verdict: It’s easier for taller people to have the upper hand. Sexual attraction Towering, statuesque men do tend to have more allure. Study after study has found that taller men and women are generally considered more attractive . Intriguingly, you can even guess someone’s height from their face, meaning a mugshot on a dating website is not going to hide a more diminutive frame. But although they may be prized as supermodels, tall women do not seem to enjoy the same advantages in the dating game, however – an average height generally seems to be preferred. Even for men, a lanky body could be mixed blessing, if it means people also pay greater attention to your other endowments. One study recently examined women’s judgements of penis size . Curiously, the taller the man, the more important his penis size seemed to be in determining his overall attractiveness. Perhaps men of greater stature raised the women’s expectations, and so they were judged particularly harshly if they failed to make the grade . It’s not always true what people say about “men with big feet”, after all. Verdict: Taller people might seem to win the dating game, but that doesn’t always translate into success. Sport and athletics You only need to look at a basketball court or the race track to realise that longer legs are an advantage across many events. Longer limbs can cover the ground faster, and they can reach further. What’s more, in team sport like American Football, taller players are able look over the heads of their competitors, making it easier to pass the ball. Yet sometimes a smaller body can be a bonus. It takes less time for a nerve impulse to travel the lengths of their limbs to their brains, meaning that their reaction times should be quicker, and they may be more nimble – which might help certain martial artists like Jackie Chan. It is also more cumbersome to bend and twist a taller body, whereas smaller people can achieve greater “rotational acceleration”, meaning that they excel in gymnastics, snowboarding, skating, skiing and diving. Verdict: A clear score draw. It really depends on the sport. Clumsiness Think of your body a bit like a car: in purely mechanical terms, the larger it is, the harder it is to slow down if you need to avoid a collision. What’s more, the greater momentum means you face a more painful impact during collision. And of course, shorter people have less distance to fall. According to one estimate, someone who is 20% taller will build up twice as much kinetic energy during a fall. (You need only watch the comedian Miranda Hart to see this principle in action.) Perhaps this can explain why taller people are much more likely to suffer from injuries across their lifetime; women taller than 5ft 8in are twice as likely to fracture their hip as women who are just 5ft 2in. Verdict: Smaller people are less accident-prone than taller people . Lifespan and health Villagrande Strisaili in Sardinia is known to have the highest proportion of centenarians in the whole of Europe. While many factors may contribute (including the Mediterranean diet and a lively social life) – one possible reason may be that the people are a little on the short side, with an average male height of around 160cm (or 5ft 3in) for the oldest generation. That’s surprising. Since healthier children tend to grow taller, you might expect height to be a good indicator of overall fitness. When other factors such as diet and healthcare have been taken into account, however, taller people seem to suffer as they get older . For instance, the bigger you are, the more cells you have in your body, increasing the risk of mutations developing that could cause cancer. A larger body may also have to burn more energy, increasing the build-up of toxic by-products that could contribute to general wear and tear. The results could knock years off your life ; among those long-lived citizens of Sardinia, the tallest people lived for about two years less than their shorter neighbours. Another study, of 1.3 million Spaniards, found that every additional centimetre in height shaved 0.7 years from the total expected lifespan. Verdict: A shorter body means a longer lifespan. Happiness Despite these slight risks to your health, there is a silver lining to being tall: various studies have found that the greater your height, the higher you score on measures of happiness and enjoyment of life . This probably returns to the fact that your height can influence your career prospects and helps you to earn more money, meaning that taller people may have a slightly easier ride through life. Verdict: The taller you are, the happier you are. All of these factors are mere correlations, of course. There are plenty of exceptions that break all the rules. We have all been subjected to biology’s lottery – but it seems the prizes have been spread evenly, whatever your body size. Perhaps all these statistics really just prove the old adage right: it’s not the size of your body that determines your fate, but the way that you use it. And that’s the long and the short of the matter. Source://http://www.bbc.co.uk/future. David Robson is BBC Future’s feature writer. He is @d_a_robson on Twitter. |

By Fergus Walsh medical correspondent Nigeria has been removed from the list of polio endemic coutries in what is being regarded as a "milestone" on the quest to eradicate the disease. The announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO), was made at the meeting of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in New York. It follows Nigeria more than a year without a case of wild naturally occuring polio. Three years without cases are required before it can be declared polio free. The decision means there are just two endemic countries Pakistan and Afghanistan where transmission of the paralysing virus has never been interrupted. Source:www.bbc.co.uk/health. |

The All Progressives Congress has admonished the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Olisa Metuh, to exhibit decorum in his public statements and avoid the use of trench language in public discourse. In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the governing party said Metuh’s increasing resort to the use of putrid language in his press statements is distracting from the message he might want to pass across, while at the same time sending a bad signal to the younger generation of Nigerians who look up to him and other politicians. “Mr. Metuh, being the spokesman, first for a ruling party and now for the main opposition puts you on the rarefied level of being a role model and a pace setter. You denigrate your office and your party when you use that platform to spew out hate and abusive words. “You might choose to be bombastic, sharply critical and even aggressive in your statements, but you do not have to resort to the use of crude language like calling your fellow spokesman a ‘renowned liar,’ a ‘master liar’ or a ‘shameless veteran,’ to make your point. Apart from distracting from the issues at stake, those words reflect more on your personality than on the man you have chosen to skewer, and their vulgarity is stomach-churning”, it said. Mohammed said every statement being issued today will become a reference material in the weeks, months and years ahead, hence the need to keep them decent, polished and dignifying, even when they are hard-hitting. The party said it has chosen to caution Metuh rather than reply him in kind, hoping he will see the reason for him not to continue on the path of profanity. “After all, it was American religious leader Spencer W. Kimball who said ‘Profanity is the effort of a feeble brain to express itself forcibly’”, it said. www.informationng.com/2015/09/metuh-denigrating-his-office-pdp-by-spewing-out-hate-and-abusive-words-says-lai-mohammed.html |

Controversial pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, Tunde Bakare, has said a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, does not belong in the same class with the former Premier of Western Region, Obafemi Awolowo, and does not deserve to take the place of the late sage as the leader of the Yoruba race. He admitted that both leaders made unique contributions in bringing the race together, but Mr. Awolowo belonged to a special breed created by God and was only in the class of world leaders like Mahatma Gandhi of India. The Pentecostal pastor stated this in an interview published in the second edition of Abuja-based magazine, The Interview. Mr. Tinubu, who was governor of Lagos State from 1999-2007, holds the title of Asiwaju, one of the numerous titles also held by the late premier of Western region, who passed away in 1987. Asiwaju, a Yoruba word translated in English means “the frontline leader”. Mr. Awolowo founded the Egbe Omo Oduduwa in the 40’s to promote the culture and unity of the Yoruba. In 1951, he founded the Action Group, a political party that ran for elections in the First Republic. He later founded the Unity Party of Nigeria, which swept the governorship polls in all the states in the old Western State as well as the old Bendel State in the Second Republic. Tinubu, a Senator in the botched Third Republic, apart from being Lagos governor for eight years, was the architect behind the merger of some opposition political parties into the APC, which went on to defeat the ruling party for the first time since the return to democratic rule during the last general elections. The APC not only produced the President of the country, it controls both chambers of the National Assembly and 22 states, including five of the six states in the Southwest. But Bakare, who was running mate to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2011 under the platform of defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, said the APC leader was yet to cross the kind of rivers Mr. Awolowo crossed. “What major river did he (Tinubu) cross?” Mr. Bakare fired back when asked by his interviewer if the former governor was not qualified to take the place of the sage, who is widely described as the last authentic leader of the Yoruba. Reminded that Tinubu was the major engineer of the merger that helped to bring the Yoruba together, the fiery preacher said, “And you think it was only Bola Tinubu who made that possible. I see. Which one came first, the chicken or the egg?” He stated further, “Well, the answer is in the Bible. You are a preacher yourself. God first created the bird of the air and not eggs. The birds laid the eggs. If you see the picture of patriots and Nigerian leaders here, they are all a collapse of his. "The people who are attempting to wear his (Awolowo) glasses do not have his vision, they attempt to wear his cap but do not have his brain, they attempt to wear his shoes but do not walk his ways. Show me the empire that Awolowo built with public funds. To a Yoruba man, there is no concept greater than Omoluabi. “If you get to my father’s grave in a hut he built in 1922, which is now a museum, there is an inscription ‘bibire koshefowora” which means you cannot buy a good pedigree or familial background. “I am not trying to take the shine off Tinubu’s efforts; he had laboured but he is not in the same class with Awolowo. Regardless of how many rivers he crosses, he is still Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Awolowo is Awolowo. “I have seen some paintings and pictures out there of Mahatma Gandhi, Awolowo and others and I just laugh and wonder why people can’t be themselves. When God needed a Mahatma Gandhi, he created one. So he did when he wanted an Awolowo. He created a T.D Jakes when he needed one. “A young man once went to T.D. Jakes and said, ‘Pray for me that God will bless me and make me like you.’ T.D.Jakes asked him, “Are you sure.” “He said ‘Yes’ and T.D. Jakes said, “Let us pray. May you be homeless, go through hardship,’ and the young man jumped up and said ‘no, no, no, no, “and T.D. Jakes said, “That is what produces results”. Mr. Bakare said books Mr. Awolowo authored were still relevant today. “You need to see books he (Awolowo) wrote and how they are still relevant today”, he said, adding that “Years after he left the scene, he is still the numero uno Yoruba leader. Eagles don’t flock. You see one at a time”. www.informationng.com/2015/09/no-matter-how-hard-tinubu-tries-he-can-never-be-in-the-same-class-as-awolowo-tunde-bakare.html |
