The Theater Commander in charge of the ongoing anti-terrorism war in the North Eastern pat of the country, Maj. Gen. Yushau Abubakar says over 80,000 towns and villages have been liberated by the Joint Military Task Force in the three North Eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. The Commander made the revelation on Saturday, when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed visited the command as part of his tour to Bama area of Borno state. He said the visit would further give Nigerians firsthand information of success so far recorded by the Military since the inception of the present administration in its resolve to decimate Boko Haram before the December deadline. In his remarks, the Minister said the purpose of the visit was to give the media and other Nigerians who are not in the theatre of war firsthand information of the gallant efforts of the Nigerian military and other security agencies in tackling insurgency in the affected areas of the N/E. He said that the government considered the media as the most critical in the ongoing efforts to end insurgency, hence the need for the visit. Meanwhile, the Minister said the Federal Government has concluded plans to launch a security campaign against Boko Haram as part of its plan to support the security agents in their drive to end insurgency in Nigeria. The campaign he said is aimed at consolidating on the successes of the military in the war-torn areas of the North East and would be fashioned after the 1967-70 civil war. The Minister noted that insurgency has persisted in the country due to the failure of the civilians to complement the effort of the military in the ongoing war against Boko Haram. He called on the citizens to reciprocate the effort of the military by supplying them with intelligent reports and useful information that would aid them to bring the menace to a concluding end. ‘‘From what I have seen, what is missing is the civilian component of the war because the military can’t face it alone. People see it as a religious or ethnic war but that is not true. Terrorism is terrorism, does not know religion and ethnicity. That is why people should see it as their own fight. The Minister however, insisted that civilians must do their bit to complement the efforts of the military who had put in a lot to recapture most of the lost territories. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arraigned a former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Patrick Ziadeke Akpobolokemi before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court Lagos on twenty two count charge of conspiracy, fraudulent conversion and money laundering. One of the counts read that, "you Patrick Ziadeke Akpobolokemi, Captain Eziekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Amechee Juan between 23rd of December 2013 and 13th March 2014 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this court did commit an offence to wit; conversion of the sum N437,726,666,66 (Four Hundred and Thirty Seven Million, Seven Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand , Sixty and Six Kobo) property of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (1) of the Money Laundering ( Prohibition ) ( Amendment ) Act 2012 and punishable under section 15 ( 3 ) of the same Act.” The accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to them.In view of the plea of the accused persons, prosecuting Counsel Rotimi Oyedepo requested for trial date and also prayed the court to remand the accused persons in prison custody. Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun said she can save as much as $5 billion annually by cracking down on waste in more than 450 government agencies, a strategy that will determine how well Nigerian economy weathers its slowest growth spell since 1999. Adeosun, who took office in November, offered an early glimpse of how Africa’s top crude exporter plans to navigate a crash in oil prices that has beset petrostates globally. Nigeria’s government revenue has fallen by about 60% from the height of the oil boom more than a year ago, she said. To compensate for those lost funds, the London-born former accountant and investment banker said she would scrutinize the prices government agencies pay for plane tickets, office supplies and other items. Next year’s budget will also include caps on increases to government workers’ salaries, she said. “We’re trying to rein everybody in,” Ms. Adeosun, 48 years old, said from behind the desk vacated in May by her predecessor, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. “I don’t expect anybody to like it, but I also expect people to understand that where we find ourselves, there’s no choice.” Ms. Adeosun was finance commissioner for Ogun State before she was appointed minister.
