Erstwhile President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has enjoined Nigerian leaders to make the interest of the people their paramount interest, stressing that the selfishness of leaders has hindered the growth and prosperity of the country. Obasanjo, said this on Friday when the leadership and members of the Scout Association of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit and decorated him as Messenger of Peace Ambassador for Africa at his Presidential Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The former President who said the decoration rekindled memories of when he became Queen’s Scout, pointed out that for any leader to succeed, he must be prepared to face unexpected challenges at all times. “We need a Scout spirit in our country not just for individual benefit alone but also for services to the nation. Work collectively and provide the leadership that will make us get progress”, he said. Obasanjo further noted that the nation needed to work collectively to ensure that the nation progresses in all spheres. source:dailypost.ng/2016/01/09/selfish-leaders-hindering-nigerias-growth-obasanjo/

Security operatives in two loaded trucks on Friday, besieged the house of former Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Mr Abdullahi Inde Dikko, on Ahmed Musa Street, Jabi, Abuja. Vanguard gathered that stern looking mobile policemen and officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrived the house of the former customs boss in Toyota Hiace trucks with registration numbers RSH 555 AB and BWA 645 GA to search the house of Inde who was said to be out of the country. The family members of the former Customs boss are currently been held hostage as no one is allowed to either enter or leave the house. The reason for the search of Dikkos’s residence by security operatives may not be unconnected with his activities during the over six years when he held sway as the boss of the ‘prime’ revenue agency of the government It would be recalled that Dikko who is from Katsina State became Comptroller-General of Customs on August 17, 2009, resigned his appointment in August, 2015, four months into President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. source:www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/security-operatives-besiege-abuja-residence-of-ex-customs-boss-dikko/ |
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former president of Nigeria, on Thursday, paid a courtesy call on Kamalesh Sharma, the Commonwealth secretary-general, at Marlborough House,London ,headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat. Welcoming Jonathan to Marlborough House for the first time, Sharma thanked him for his “able leadership” of the recent Commonwealth Election Observer Group (COG) to Tanzania, and subsequently, for his services to the Commonwealth as his Special Representative, following the annulment of the elections in Zanzibar. He also paid tribute to the “personal leadership” of the former president in the peaceful transition to a new government in Nigeria after the last election. The former president briefed the secretary-general on the activities of the Observer Group in Tanzania, and lauded the Commonwealth Secretariat for supporting him with a team that displayed a high level of team spirit and professionalism. Jonathan further welcomed the opportunity to be of service to the Commonwealth as the leader of the COG, describing it as “a great honour, both for him, and for Nigeria.” He expressed concerns about the persisting uncertainty in Zanzibar following the cancellation of the October 25 general elections. But he expressed hope that the leaders of the country would put the national interest and the people of Zanzibar first, as they seek a sustainable and peaceful solution to the impasse in the ongoing national dialogue Jonathan assured Sharma that he would continue to take an interest in developments in Zanzibar as his Special Representative. He commended the Commonwealth for its efforts in promoting peaceful and credible elections globally, especially in Africa. He pledged to work with the organisation in the promotion of democracy and good governance, and in countering violent extremism on the continent. source:www.tribuneonlineng.com/‘commonwealth-lauds-jonathan’s-‘able-leadership’ |

The Lagos State Government says the demolition of Owonifari Market in the Oshodi area and the relocation of traders to Isopakodowo Market in Bolade-Oshodi are in the interest of the public. At a press briefing addressed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde; Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Wasiu Anifowoshe; Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare; and Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, the government observed that the uproar generated by the demolition was unnecessary. Ayorinde said the government provided an alternative place which had over 600 shops and space that could house 400 traders, and had also agreed to give out the shops for N5,000. “The traders were adequately notified before the exercise took place as required by law. The government also had a series of meeting with the leadership of the market before the demolition,” he added. The commissioner explained that the issue of the market had been on for 10 years, adding although a large number of the traders relocated to the new market, some refused to move. Ayorinde said, “Governor Akinwunmi Ambode invited the leadership of the market to the Executive Chambers on December 16, 2015, where he reiterated his plans for Oshodi and the need to move the traders to move to Isopakodowo Market. “On Monday, December 21, 2015, it was eventually agreed that the traders would pay N5,000 for a shop at Isopakodowo Market. There is nowhere in Lagos where you will see a N5,000 shop, let alone in central Oshodi, but the governor agreed with them. We, thereafter, formally served them notices to quit through the office of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.” He said, “Government will not be blackmailed because we had done everything humanly possible for the traders to relocate. “The government wants to ensure that the area conforms to the type of image that we want for Lagos, which is to beautify the place, construct a world-class bus terminal, and reduce the gridlock and criminalities associated with that area.” The Commissioner for the Environment, Adejare, said the traders claiming that their goods were destroyed were mischievous. He added that the materials that were demolished with the market were the wastes left behind by those who had relocated to the new place. source:www.punchng.com/oshodi-market-demolition-for-public-security-says-lasg/

Former governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has debunked allegations by the Nyesom Wike-led administration that he misappropriated the sum of N82 million to organise a dinner for Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka. Amaechi in a statement by his Media Officer also challenged Wike to approach the courts. Amaechi, who is now the Minister of Transportation warned Wike and his aides to stop peddling falsehood against renowned men like Prof. Soyinka. Amaechi in the statement described the allegation as a “silly distraction” aimed at covering up for the massive fraud currently going on in his (Wike’s) government. “Wike must stop this silly distraction. Rivers people are not interested in his lies and witch-hunt. Rather, Rivers people want to know what will happen to their children that he stopped and cancelled the funding of their scholarships abroad. “Rivers people want to know why is the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), an agency set up by law no longer functioning under Wike? “Why instead of quality education, a standard set by his predecessor, under Wike, grasses and weeds have taken over the beautiful schools built by Amaechi? “Rivers people want to know why the standard health facilities and services put in place by the Amaechi administration are rotting away, not this petty rambling. “Rivers people want to know why the Wike government does not care about the security of their lives and property, as violence and criminals have taken over. “Rivers people want to know why it feels as if there is no government in Rivers State, and this is in spite of the billions of naira that has accrued to the Wike administration and the tens of billions of naira borrowed.” It could be recalled that Wike’s Government had accused the immediate past administration of Rotimi Amaechi of “squandering” N82million on the birthday of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka last year. The newly appointed State Commissioner for Information, Austin Tam-George went as far as demanding for refund of the said money. Tam-George said, “I will seek the permission of the Governor to formally write Professor Wole Soyinka, a known supporter of Amaechi if he received part of the N82million spent on a 3-hour Dinner hosted for him by the Amaechi administration.” source:dailypost.ng/2016/01/07/soyinka-n82m-birthday-amaechi-challenges-wike-to-go-to-court/

A former Presidential Liaison Officer to ex-President Shehu Sagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has denied receiving N63million from Chief Tony Anenih as the latter alleged in a letter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Yakassai said this in a telephone interview with our Correspondent on Wednesday. The elder statesman was reacting to news reports that he collected the said sum from Chief Tony Anenih. He explained that while it was true that he received an amount of money from the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, for an assignment, the money was not up to the amount quoted. Pressed to say how much he received, Yakassai said he was not at liberty to say because the matter is in court and that it is when they both go to court that each party will tender evidence to back up his claim. Yakassai said, “The amount being bandied about is not what was given to me. It is true Chief Anenih gave the committee of eminent persons which I headed some funds for our assignment, the money being quoted is not what we received. “The committee of nine persons which I led was given an assignment to reach out to traditional rulers on the need for them to ensure peaceful elections in their domains because there was tension in prior to the 2015 general elections. “We went round 18 states and Abuja where we met two in each of the states we visited, we started with the Sultan of Sokoto, we could not meet with traditional rulers in Gombe because on the day of our visit, Boko Haram attacked the town and there were reports that they were targeting the Government House where we were at that time.” Asked whether the committee gave money to any of the traditional rulers, Yakasai said, “No. We were not given any money to give any of them and we did not give them any money. “The money the committee received was for logistics such as transport and accommodation. We wrote a report after our assignment which started on January 14 and ended on February 15, 2015, the records are there.” The elder statesman said he was prepared to defend the activities of the committee when required to do so because the committee performed its assignment creditably and transparently. source:www.punchng.com/i-didnt-receive-n63m-from-anenih-yakassai/ |

One-time Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja has asserted that former President, Olusegun Obasanjo numbers among the greatest leaders to have ever been produced in Nigeria, adding that the former President’s voice is presently the number one in Africa. Disclosing this at his Bodija residence in Ibadan during an interaction with newsmen, the governorship candidate of the Accord Party, AP, in the last election in Oyo State was quick to point out that he is not Obasanjo’s friend as they “cannot sit down together for one hour without fighting.” Noting that there has so far not been any Nigerian that has attained the height of ruling the country for almost 12 years like Obasanjo, he reasoned that there must be something good in him to have attained such feat. Ladoja noted, “Since he (Obasanjo) became Head of State in 1976, he has always had a hand in who becomes the president of Nigeria. It was said he had a hand in how Alhaji Shehu Shagari became the president of Nigeria in 1979. After Shagari, the next one we had was when he became president in 1999. “Look at this paradox, Obasanjo became president 20 years after he was said to have had a hand in how Shagari became president. He also had hand in how the late Alhaji Umar Yar’Adua became president in 2007. He also had hand in how Goodluck Jonathan became president and he had hand in how Muhammadu Buhari became president. “Tell me if there is any Nigerian that can be said to be greater than that. Obasanjo’s voice in Africa today is about number one. When he talks, everybody knows that Obasanjo has talked. We should not minimise the fact that God decides what he wants to do. I am not a pastor, but I believe that God has a hand in everything that is happening in Nigeria, and even everything that is happening in the world. “If he calls the United States President, Barack Obama, he doesn’t need to say who is Obasanjo? The world leaders know him. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban ki Moon, knows him. He may not be the most righteous but he has been the one that has been so favoured. Buhari became President, essentially because of the vote of the North. Obasanjo became president, not because of the votes of the West, it was not the vote of his own people. “So, me and my brothers (Obasanjo) are not good friends o. We cannot sit down together for one hour without fighting. But it cannot be denied that so far he is the biggest Nigerian and as of today, the greatest African after Nelson Mandela, who is no more. ”Whether the Yoruba accepts him as leader or not, huh? Recently, he told me that he is not the leader of the Yorubas, but of Nigeria.” The former Governor, however, pointed out that Obasanjo cannot be said to be the most righteous person, recalling that, “they told him before (he became president) that he could not become a deacon in the Baptist Church because of many vices he was said to have perpetrated. Yet, God said this is the person that is going to be your leader. “So, whether we like it or not – luckily Yoruba respect two things, age and position,” he stated. source:dailypost.ng/2016/01/06/obasanjo-is-the-greatest-nigerian-alive-his-voice-is-number-one-in-africa-ladoja/

A former minister of Education and leader of the Bring Back Our Girls group, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has asked Nigerians to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to get pardon the soldiers arrested for mutiny in the fight against Boko Haram. Delivering a keynote address titled: “A caring society grows faster and better,” at the launch of the Bunmi Adedayo Foundation on Tuesday in Lagos, Ezekwesili said the soldiers were wrongly punished for refusing to fight the insurgency ill-equipped, considering that some former public officials shared the money meant to equip the army and the diversion of the funds was a demonstration of how political leaders and citizens exhibit ‘I don’t care’ attitude towards governance. She said: “The exemplification of a society of ‘I don’t care’ could not have been worse in manifestation than recent revelations that while the tragedy went on in the Northeast, those responsible for governance sat around the table, watched citizens being taken out by the bunions of terror and felt comfortable to share the resources meant to equip the fighting soldiers and then turned around and said to those among the soldiers that refused to be sent on a suicide mission that they deserved to die. “How else can you define ‘I don’t care’? I hope you will join me in telling the President of our country that those soldiers don’t deserve to die. Our President must use the prerogative of mercy that the constitution gives him to waive any kind of charges against those ones, we are not saying all soldiers, because some may have misbehaved in the course of this war. “But we are saying that it is reprehensible that our society will degenerate to the level where leaders, who as are found in these other societies, stay awake worried about the challenges of their citizens, in our own case, stayed awake sharing the resources, meant to protect the territory and the people.” source:www.nigerianmonitor.com/2016/01/06/pardon-convicted-soldiers-ezekwesili-begs-buhari/

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the anti-graft probe to the management of local government joint accounts in the 36 states of the federation. The call is contained in a statement issued by the President of the union, Mr Ibrahim Khaleel in Kano on Tuesday. The statement quoted Khaleel as saying “the anti-corruption war cannot be complete without a searchlight on the management of the local government joint account system in the country. “In the area of corruption, a lot of breakthrough are being recorded as some culprits are being brought to book. “I, therefore, call on President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the fight on anti-graft to the management of states and local government joint accounts across the 36 states of the federation. The Union boss also commended the Federal Government “for the concerted efforts to tame insurgency in the country.’’ (NAN) source:dailypost.ng/2016/01/05/extend-corruption-probe-to-statelg-joint-account-nulge-begs-buhari/ |
APC na cheating party |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesdaysaid it would not accept anything short of free, fair and credible election in Saturday’s supplementary poll in the governorship election in Bayelsa. This is contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity S ecretary, Chief OlisaMetuh, and issued in Abuja. The supplementary poll will be conducted in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area where the exercise was cancelled following widespread violence. Metuh said that PDP had again rallied its formation in the state, particularly in Southern Ijaw, to use all means necessary in a democracy to resist any move to rig the supplementary election. He claimed that Southern Ijaw was a well-known PDP stronghold and that the party would never accept any results that did not reflect the will of the people.“Let it be known to all that the PDP is fully mobilised for Saturday’s supplementary election .“Our members across Southern Ijaw have beenstationed in every polling unit, every collation centre and every exit and entry point in the area, and have been directed to use all means available in a democracy to stop APC in its trail.“Southern Ijaw Local Government is a well-known stronghold of the PDP and we will not in any way accept anything short of free, fair and credible election, abundantly reflecting the will of the people. Anything to the contrary will attract terrible consequences.“We restate our resolve that never again would the PDP allow itself to be manipulated out in any election at any level, no matter the intimidation by the APC-led administration,’’ he said.Metuh said that the party had called on its members and supporters not to leave the polling area after casting their votes but to remain alert within the distance provided by the law. He also called on them to go ahead to use all means necessary to defend and protect their votes, should there be any attempt by anybody to rig the process. The PDP will intently monitor and keep recordsof activities, including all votes cast in every polling unit in Southern Ijaw and our members will not hesitate to unleash a legitimate anger, if at any point in collation, fictitious figures appear.” source:http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/bayelsa-we-want-free-fair-and-credible-election-pdp/ |
Buhari is a snake |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that its national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, is not under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as claimed in a national daily. It said the EFCC had never invited Metuh, or questioned him on any issue whatsoever. A statement yesterday by Metuh’s Special Assistant, Richard Ihediwa, said if indeed, the report was from the EFCC, then they should note that “only in a period of tyranny are people investigated on the pages of newspapers, as a prelude for abuse and violation of their freedom and rights under the law. “The attention of the office of the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, has been drawn to a report on the Monday, January 4, 2016 edition of the Nation Newspapers, suggesting that the National Publicity Secretary is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “It is instructive to observe that a mere media campaign of calumny does not in any way whatsoever translate to any evidence of guilt. It is rather an evidence of infringement on the rights of the citizenry and manifestation of the reign of tyranny. “In a democratic and civilised country, where there are issues that require investigations by such agencies, invitations are duly extended. However, to read daily of people being investigated in select newspapers betrays plots to portray them as guilty of fraud and crime, and targeted to convey the PDP as a corrupt party and the APC as party of Nigerians without sin. “If we now have a system where citizens get to be investigated, tried and executed by planting stories in select newspapers, wherein then lies the need for our judicial process?,” the statement said. source:www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/politics/metuh-not-under-efcc-investigation-pdp/127292.html |

Running mate to the late Prince Abubakar Audu in the last governorship election in Kogi State, Mr James Faleke, over the weekend identified the implementation of Audu’s lofty campaign promises to the electorate in the state as his major priority. This was as he praised the deceased All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate for outlining various programmes aimed at rescuing the State from under-development. Speaking at the 40th Day Fidaus prayer for the departed attended by no fewer than 80 Imams and Islamic prayer warriors at Ogbonicha, Audu’s hometown in Kogi State, Faleke bemoaned the untimely death of Audu, but promised the gathering that he would ensure the speedy fulfilment of Audu’s campaign promises should the courts rule in his favour. The deputy governor-elect said his case at the tribunal was not based on self-interest, but to get back the people’s mandate, stolen from them, adding that he was in the best position to actualise Audu’s dream for the people of the state, having worked closely with him during the campaign. Faleke, who vowed to utilise every legal means to pursue the people’s mandate, admonished the people to bear whatever inconveniences that might arise, as it would only delay, but that justice would be served in the end. In his reaction, Audu’s eldest son, Mohammed, assured Faleke of the continued support of the family and the entire Igala people, as he goes about pursuing his mandate at the tribunal. While eulogizing his father as an exemplary leader, he stressed that the Audu political family was solidly behind Faleke in his quest to recover the former governor’s stolen mandate through the courts. “Faleke has the capacity to carry on my late father’s vision as governor,” he averred. source:dailypost.ng/2016/01/04/my-priority-is-to-implement-audus-vision-for-kogi-faleke/ |
