Health › Photo – Enugu Woman Wakes Up In Mortuary 2 Days After Death. by NEROSKY(op): 4:03am On Sep 02, 2012
21 years-old Adora Ugwu is planning to be a soldier. She also wants to secure admission into one of the country’s tertiary institutions. She had put her hands on the plough of her latter dream by writing the last UMTE.

But, as she was going for the other one, she died. Two days after the lady wrote the examination, she was heading for her home state of Enugu for the recruitment into the Nigerian Army when the vehicle she was travelling had a head-on collision with a similar minibus.

The result: her death and that of 25 others who included four discharged members of batch B National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Twenty of them including Adora reportedly died on the spot in headon collision involving two 15 passengers’ capacity buses, each, belonging separately to Peace Mass Transit Limited and the Enugu State Transport Company (ENTRACO). The buses had registration number BENUE – XB 504 TKP, ENUGU – XL 812 UWN respectively.

The ghastly crash occurred along Enugu- Markudi express road, at Amoka in Udi, Enugu State on June 20th. Immediately after the crash which was promptly reported to the Enugu State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) by its Delta State Sector Commander Lukas Ikpi who met the accident while travelling on the road, the dead including Adora were evacuated to Our Saviour Hospital morgue at 9th mile. But she was not meant to stay among the dead for long.

Two days after she had been confined to the mortuary. The parents had wept and mourned, most of them especially the mother was devastated, but the dead must be buried. And this was what Adora’s relative intended doing: bury her two day-old corpse. At the morgue, the attendants were putting in place all the deeds of mortification when suddenly there was a sound; a sneeze, it was. They looked around, then another one! Behold, the body being prepared for claim by the relatives had just sneezed.

The dead don’t sneeze, they reasoned. Adora, whose body was being prepared, is not dead after all. When Saturday Mirror asked her what she felt on her first realization of consciousness, she said: “I thought we were all sleeping. When I asked people around where I was, she said they said I had an accident.

“I cannot remember anything that happened when I was at the mortuary.” When Adora was discovered to be alive, her relative who had come to identify her was immediately called phoned the others from the morgue. Tears turned to felicitation. From the morgue she was later transferred to the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu where is currently receiving treatment and spoke with Saturday Mirror.

Adora, told Saturday Mirror that she hails from Enugu state. She said she attended a secondary school in North-Bank Markudi, Benue State adding that she was in Benue to take her JAMB after which she was travelling down to Enugu for army recruitment when the accident occurred.

Travel › 900 Escape Death As Train Rammed Into Trailer In Lagos by NEROSKY(op): 5:56am On Sep 01, 2012
29 burnt to death, several others injured in Yobe auto crash
Over nine hundred passengers escaped death yesterday morning when a 10-coach Iddo bound train rammed into a trailer truck at Ilupeju Railway crossing near Oshodi, Lagos.

Also two Toyota Hiace buses travelling in opposite directions along Potiskum-Kano road in the state, had a head-on collision and thereafter went off in flames. 29 persons died,11 of them burnt beyond recognition.

The accident which occurred at about 7:30 a.m. led to traffic gridlock along the Ilupeju/Oshodi road for several hours.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that each of the coaches has 90 seats, but they were usually overloaded.

An eye witness said that the articulated vehicle blocked the railway crossing when the train was already close by.

The loaded trailer had crashed into the double barriers on the railway crossing shortly before the train arrived.

On seeing the approaching train, the driver jumped out of the trailer and ran away. The train then dragged the truck for some distance, scattering the goods inside it — which were mostly empty cartons of Malta Guinness drink along the track.

The dragging of the truck also led to the damaging of some vehicles parked along the rail track by motor mechanics.

We gathered that the accident caused some damage to the engine of the locomotive and the track.

Confirming the accident, Mr Ademuyiwa Adekanbi, the Lagos District Public Relations Officer of the Railways, said that no life was lost in the incident.

Adekanbi said that the corporation has embarked on enough enlightenment campaigns on the use of the Railway Crossings.

“We have done enough jingles on radio and television, we have rallies and distributed fliers to sensitise people of the right of way of a train at level crossings,” he said.

The incident makes it the third time in August that passenger trains have rammed into vehicles at railway crossings in the Lagos metropolis.

29 burnt to death, several others injured in Yobe auto crash

Two buses collided head-on and burst into flames in Yobe State yesterday, killing at least 29 people, police said.

Also Saturday Vanguard gathered that two Toyota Hiace buses travelling in opposite directions along Potiskum-Kano road in the state, had a head-on collision and thereafter went off in flames. 29 persons died,11 of them burnt beyond recognition.

Police spokesman Frank Mba confirmed the incident adding that that 16 others were also injured.
He said the accident happened at 1:00 pm, adding that the injured were taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Potiskum.

The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Malam Shehu Umar, attributed the accident to reckless driving and over-speeding, adding: “accidents on this road are mostly associated with reckless driving and over-speeding.”

Although the commission was yet to identify the victims, Umar said that one of the vehicles belonged to Borno Express Bus Service.

“We are yet to determine the destination of the vehicles that is, where they took off from and where they were heading to because. We are still concentrating efforts to deposit the corps at the General Hospital, Potiskum,” Umar stated. VANGUARDNGR
