Also heard that the plane that crashed today was the same plane that had landing gear problem in Uyo a couple of weeks back. It gave signs, but the airline didn't do anything about it. What a shame!

Nairaland General › Why Are Genius And Madness Connected? by NEROSKY(op): 11:47pm On Jun 03, 2012
Many of history’s most celebrated creative geniuses were mentally ill, from renowned artists Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo to literary giants Virginia Woolf and Edgar Allan Poe. Today, the fabled connection between genius and madness is no longer merely anecdotal. Mounting research shows these two extremes of the human mind really are linked — and scientists are beginning to understand why.
A panel of experts discussed recent and ongoing research on the subject at an event held Thursday (May 31) in New York as part of the 5th annual World Science Festival. All three panelists suffer from mental illnesses themselves.
Kay Redfield Jamison, a clinical psychologist and professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said the findings of some 20 or 30 scientific studies endorse the notion of the “tortured genius.” Of the many varieties of psychosis, creativity appears to be most strongly linked to mood disorders, and especially bipolar disorder, which Jamison suffers from herself. For example, one study tested the intelligence of 700,000 Swedish 16-year-olds and then followed up a decade later to learn which of them had developed mental illnesses. The startling results were published in 2010. “They found that people who excelled when they were 16 years old were four times as likely to go on to develop bipolar disorder,” she said.
Bipolar disorder entails dramatic mood swings between extreme happiness (known as “mania”) and severe depression. How might this brutal cycle engender creativity? Research by another panelist, James Fallon, a neurobiologist at the University of California-Irvine, suggests an answer.
“People with bipolar tend to be creative when they’re coming out of deep depression,” Fallon said. When a bipolar patient’s mood improves, his brain activity shifts, too: activity dies down in the lower part of a brain region called the frontal lobe, and flares up in a higher part of that lobe. Amazingly, the very same shift happens when people have bouts of creativity. “There [is] this nexus between these circuits that have to do with bipolar and creativity,” Fallon said.
As for how the brain patterns translate into conscious thought, Elyn Saks, a mental health law professor at the University of Southern California, explained that people with psychosis don’t filter stimuli as well as other people. Instead, they’re able to entertain contradictory ideas simultaneously, and become aware of loose associations that most people’s unconscious brains wouldn’t consider worthy of sending to the surface of our consciousness. While the invasion of nonsense into conscious thought can be overwhelming and disruptive, “it can be quite creative, too,” said Saks, who developed schizophrenia as a young adult.
For example, word association studies, which ask participants to list all the words that come to mind in relation to a stimulus word (such as “tulip”), demonstrate that bipolar patients undergoing mild mania can generate three times as many word associations in a given time period as the general population. As for how this leads to strokes of genius, it could be that the sheer bounty of unsuppressed ideas means a greater probability of producing something profound.
Of course, no one is bursting with creative energy during a severe bout of depression or schizophrenia. Above all, these conditions are debilitating and even life-threatening, the scientists said, and although society benefits from the productivity of its tortured geniuses, those individuals don’t always consider their moments of brilliance to be worth the extensive suffering.

Crime › Imagine A 16-year-old Boy Killing His Mother Over Playstation Argument! by NEROSKY(op): 9:52pm On May 31, 2012
Kendall Anderson was a 16-year-old student who grew up in Philadelphia. However, following a lengthy argument with his mother over a PlayStation-based punishment, Kendall quickly became a 16-year-old criminal who has been charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and abuse of a corpse.
Kendall initially attempted to murder his mother, Rashida Anderson, in her sleep by using a hammer. When his original plan failed, the son instead tried to “cremate her” in the kitchen oven. Following this second failure, Kendall’s third course of action was to repeatedly beat his mother with a chair leg before hiding her corpse behind the house.
Unsurprisingly, Kendall was put on trial for the murder of Rashida Anderson after confessing his crime to the Philadelphia Police Department.
Anderson had the following to say about the death of his mother, as mentioned during the trial:
“If I could, I would not do it again. I really miss my mom . . . she was the only person who cared for me.”

Romance › The Touch Of A Man Makes Women Hot! by NEROSKY(op): 1:57am On May 31, 2012
Being touched by a man really gets the ladies hot, new research suggests. When physically touched by a male experimenter, women actually did get “hot and bothered” — their skin temperature increased, specifically in the face and chest.
“Women showed a temperature increase when they were involved in social contact with the male experimenter,” study researcher Amanda Hahn, of the University of St. Andrews, in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience. “In some women they changed by almost a whole degree” Celsius, or 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
These changes were subconscious in many of the participants. Figuring out how skin temperature changes in response to stress and other emotional factors could help researchers study arousal non-invasively and develop hands-off lie detectors.
The face heats up when under stress, or when scared, or angry (hence the term hot-headed). The researchers wanted to find how other emotions impact facial temperature, so they took heat-showing pictures of two groups of young heterosexual women during a standard interaction with an experimenter, which included touching the arm, palm, face and chest (using a light probe that they were told measures skin color).
When an experimenter (of either gender) touched a participant, the participant’s average skin temperature jumped about a tenth of a degree Celsius. The effect wasn’t as large when considering only touches to the participant’s arm or palm, and the skin of the face and chest regions changed the most.
The jump was about three times larger when the experimenter was male, the researchers found. The facial and chest skin of a young female, when touched in those areas by a male experimenter, got about 0.54 F (0.3 C) hotter.
The touch
This increase is pretty large for a facial temperature change, the researchers said. “This is the sort of magnitude of change you would see when you are doing an explicit emotional stressor,” like inducing fear or stress, Hahn said. “We weren’t manipulating their emotional or affective state, it was a subtle social relation with the experimenter … but they had pretty large reactions.”
Many of the participants were unaware of their skin temperature reaction, when asked about it after the fact. “Only about a quarter of the sample reported feeling any emotional change. The rest were consciously unaffected by the interaction,” Hahn said.
The researchers can’t say if the changes are perceptible to the naked eye, or if they could be detected with touch. If others can detect these changes, they could serve as social cues that we use to communicate nonverbally.

Nairaland General › Some Women Breastfeeding Animals...oh My God!! by NEROSKY(op): 10:13pm On May 26, 2012
The breastfeeding by humans of animals is a practice that is widely attested historically and continues to be practiced today by some cultures. The reasons for the practice are varied: to feed young animals, to drain a woman’s breasts, to promote lactation, to develop good nipples, to prevent conception and so on. One example of the practice being used for health reasons comes from late 18th century England. When the writer Mary Wollstonecroft was dying of puerperal fever in 1797 following the birth of her second daughter, the doctor ordered that puppies be applied to her breasts to draw off the milk, possibly with the intention of helping her womb to contract to expel the infected placenta that was slowly poisoning her. Similarly, English and German physicians between the 16th and 18th centuries recommended using puppies to “draw” the mother’s breasts, and in 1799 the German Friedrich Benjamin Osiander reported that in Göttingen women suckled young dogs to dislodge nodules from their breasts.Religious and ceremonial reasons have also been a factor. Saint Veronica Giuliani (1660–1727), an Italian nun and mystic, was known for taking a lamb to bed with her and suckling it as a symbol of the Lamb of God. In far northern Japan, the Ainu people are noted for holding an annual bear festival at which a captured bear, raised and suckled by the women, is sacrificed. Bears were also suckled by the Itelmens of the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia but in their case for economic reasons, to benefit from the meat when the bear was grown and to obtain highly-prized bear bile for use in traditional medicine.Elsewhere, animals have widely been used as “milk siblings” for infants to toughen the nipples and maintain the mother’s milk supply. In Persia and Turkey puppies were used for this purpose. The same method was practiced in the United States in the early 19th century; William Potts Dewees recommended in 1825 that from the eighth month of pregnancy, expectant mothers should regularly use a puppy to harden the nipples, improve breast secretion and prevent inflammation of the breasts. The practice seems to have fallen out of favour by 1847, as Dewees suggested using a nurse or some other skilled person to carry out this task rather than an animal.
Tribal peoples around the world have used many types of animals for the same purpose. Travelers in Guyana observed native women breastfeeding a variety of animals, including monkeys, opossums, pacas, agoutis, peccaries and deer. Native Canadians and Americans often breastfed young dogs; an observer commented that the Pima people of Arizona “withdrew their breasts sooner from their own infants than from young dogs.

Politics › This Is The World’s Most Comfortable Prison, would You Love To There??? Lolx! by NEROSKY(op): 10:49pm On May 25, 2012
Today C.N.N tops that prison (which employs personal trainers) with what it calls the “world’s nicest prison” and “the holiday version of Alcatraz.” Also located in Norway, Bastoy Prison is, as you might expect, home to murderers and rapists. Here’s what it’s not home to: armed guards or fences. In fact, the convicts carry the keys to their own rooms. On this tiny island, the 115 prisoners can tan on the beaches, fish, play tennis, and use the sauna.
Instead of cells, they live in cottages “painted a cheery red.” They wear whatever clothes they want. They get paid about $10 a day to do jobs like garden, or tend to horses. They eat farm-fresh eggs and salmon. If all this infuriates you, join the club: Norway has heard it before. It says its unconventional approach reduces the risk of reoffending: Some 20% of the country’s prisoners do so in two years; of those who have passed through Bastoy, it’s 16%. The three-year US rate is 43%. Says the prison’s governor, “”If we have created a holiday camp for criminals here, so what? We should reduce the risk of reoffending, because if we don’t, what’s the point of punishment, except for leaning toward the primitive side of humanity?”
